You have three basic variants of "idiot" in Japanese: in hiragana, in katakana and in the Kanji. Mary only used Kanji variant towards Suzui (the boy), while she exclusively used the variant mentioned in the picture to Yumeko.
So basically - Suzui is a cover up and a red herring "love interest", while Yumeko is the real one.

I always go to mangaupdates and check the author's gender before reading a manga. Not that I wouldn't read it if the writer was a male, but I always take the author's psychology into consideration and compare it to the work that they presented. I think what people need to think about is this:
Have they ever too Yuri out of an adaptation or lessened it?
When they adapt non-yuri, naturally het is going to win out. When they do original stuff, there's nothing to base it on to compare.

Personally, I've only ever watched Lucky Star and K-On by them. So I actually don't know the answer.
But if peoples' problems are het series with added yuri baiting, I don't see how this is a good comparison.

Long story short, how the story goes is more or less down to the original source material (or in Tamako's case, the writer) and it's hard to think of instances where something they've animated has been notably worse than what they're adapting it from (most of the Hibikek hate comes from the novels, for instance). Animation-wise, the only notable thing they've got against them is the samey character design they've had going for years.

That's actually a slight mistranslation. In the original Japanese, she specifically says gachi yuri, which is the in-your-face, look how gay we are, type of yuri. And I think that most people can agree that at the very least, the portrayal of Midori's homosexuality was very nuanced.

I didn't even want her to win the Tamakobowl because I found Tamako's personality creepily childish and unsuited for romance.
