Agent Cooper in Season 1 also had a dream in 1989 where he was 25 years older.

The original Peaks was great because beyond the perfect atmosphere and style, there was a constant sense of order and consistency. There were clear characters and narrative goals that gave the story momentum and emotion regardless of whether the audience ever actually arrived at those goals. When the show bent the rules and broached the surreal and abstract it felt meaningful and evocative because there was still a structure of reality to challenge

The Return was great too and twenty times better than the camp and nostalgia milking and fan service that any other showrunners would have given us, but I can't seriously say it was better or even as good as the first season. It was completely unmoored from the audience, for better and worse. Lynch and Frost were throwing whatever came to mind on a canvas, and most of the time it worked out (or even succeeded wildly) because they're master craftsmen and brilliant artists, but not always. Not every improvised plot device was convincing or relevant. Not every digression or new minor character had value. The "system" of dream logic fanboys keep dissecting is mostly their fevered imagination and not based on a secret rule book. It's coming from psychological impulses, not a hidden structure. Occasionally the Return was quite sloppy

Why is there an adult Laura with repressed memories in Odessa?
Why did Coop try to bring her to Twin Peaks?
Did he forget that he just time traveled to 1989?

If Diane & Cooper crossed into another reality where Twin Peaks also exists, that would mean there's more than one twin peaks. There could be hundreds of different Twin Peaks, some more different than others. I think The Secret History is of one of them, one with subtle differences.

>>
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: this is Lynch's worst work to date. It doesn't even begin to compare to his films, and it certainly doesn't hold up with the original run of the show. My suspicions have been correct: the apologists are largely made up of bandwagoners and anti-art "fans". Such people don't know the first thing about film, nor can they appreciate it. It doesn't mean the White Lodge spirits actually own the house, but the people who own the house bear the name(s) of one specific spirit. It could be a kind of calling card of the spirits. Many clues from the original reality were sprinkled around the Carrie world, like Judy's, the white horse, etc.

I will breath a sigh of relief. Lynch needs to get himself away from the Frost and television cancer, and make some worthwhile film. Something with artistic merit, not the tripe that is The Return. I completely understand Lynch now. Fitting for him to be a transcendental meditator, as his work is about the moment and not the big picture. Twin Peaks is his master work, and the finale a fitting ending. I currently feel like I'm aimlessly floating, I feel in a completely surreal state. Working us up about the story and characters was him setting things up so he could pull the rug out from under us, like a more advanced version of Mulholland Drive. I don't even mind that he pulled the rug out from under me though. Initially I did, when the final moment happened.... But now I am completely at peace and in marvel at the raw talent of David Lynch. Lynch has mastered the entire movement of surrealism, this is its peak (no pun intended). In 5 decades or so Lynch will be hailed as a master.

TLDR: LYNCHED

I feel like that final episode was almost a meta-commentary on the entirety of The Return. I think the whole idea is that some things are meant to stay dead, trapped in amber, and that bringing them back can change them irrevocably. By bringing Laura back, they destroyed the reality of Twin Peaks - by bringing the show back, we may have destroyed Twin Peaks. Dale, Laura and the audience are all trapped in a purgatory together at the end of the series. It's one of the most nightmarish things I can imagine.

It's funny, because I could kick Lynch's ass. He wouldn't dare pass this spew off to my face as worthwhile art. That's what makes the "fan" so disastrous to art: Lynch cannot see what he's really dealing with, and it makes him do stuff he shouldn't, and pander to an audience that wouldn't otherwise exist.

If you have any problem with the ending just watch the first scene. Fireman is afraid and knows "it" (Judy) is already there and listening. He asks Cooper for help, he's not saving Laura out of the kindness of his heart but because he was asked to and knows how valuable Laura is.

Two birds with one stone. Cooper and Diane using Laura as a stone (a weapon).

The ending was Cooper being wrong. He attempted to save Laura, never once realizing that you can never ever actually go back. You can never fix the past. >when the owner of the house said Mrs. Chalfont

It was truly the best ending to it. I could write an essay explaining everything but it's too much. It all just makes sense. I'm really going to miss this show.

No, this is just the way bad television is. Twin Peaks is one of my favorite series, but this new season was an entire fiesta of nothingness. It's not even like you can make interpretations, or create theories, because there are so many meaningless and asinine aspects now.

One other poster was right, half the stuff in the show doesn't need answering. But the other half is being totally disregarded all together. Unless there's a season afterwards, this was honestly as bad as S2. Adding a bunch of sci-fi spooky shit doesn't automatically make it good, despite what /tv/ says.

>Dreams have levels of understanding that don't make sense. You jump from one dream to another without remembering where you came from.
>There are higher levels of reality that cannot be explained in a physical world (White lodge, black lodge, etc.)
>There are two theories as to what really happened: This was all a dream from Laura Palmer and she wakes up at the end (pretty unoriginal ending, but the visual experience makes it a master piece
>Or: Laura was never supposed to die and the universe did everything remotely possible to fix it.
>The point of view we experience throughout the majority of the show is through Dale Cooper. He is a character within the dream or other reality to keep in touch with the dreamer.
>When BOB dies and the scene with Cooper overlaying everyone, that indicated the infinite (8) levels of the dream. In a dream world, the laws of physics in the physical realm don't make sense.
>When Cooper opened the door at the Great Northern, went up the stairs, entered the motel, etc, he was just going through multiple levels of the dream
>Cooper realizes that it's time for the dream to end, he goes to a place where he knows things will change (the place he got out the car with Diane)
>Laura then realizes at the end what is going on and completely freaks out

Hey, atleast it's nice the Jerry Horne subplot got wrapped up and he wasn't left roaming the Earth naked.
>>
Theory I'm working on. In episode 8 when the giant puts Laura into a ball and sends her to earth. What if that's happening at the end of episode 17 and the giant successfully pulled Laura out of reality and put her in the dream we see in episode 18. Make sense to me because they were close enough to the entrance that the giant should be able to reach there, and the idea floated around in episode 8 that the giant created Laura to juxtapose evil doesn't make sense with the lore of the show. This is how the giant knew about Richard and Linda and 430, because he created the dream to keep Laura safe. Then what we're seeing at the end of 18 is them hearing Sarah's scream and Laura waking up back in 1989 because we see her body disappear, so she's probably not dead. Drunk posting, so correct me if I'm wrong, but this makes sense to me.

Cooper is the "magician long[ing] to see," the one "between two worlds". He's learned to traverse the curtain-verse. Laura is "the dreamer".

The Laura tulpa is taken from Cooper in the woods before he can return her to the Lodge.

True Coop and Diane both crossover into the past(?), but the Cooper that walks into the hotel at night is not the one that beckons Diane to his bedside. That's Mr. C at the beginning of his "life"; We are witnessing the rape the tulpa mentioned before pulling the gun on Gordon. She's trying to resist (looking away, covering his face) but she's somehow compelled to fuck him.

Good Cooper walks into the hotel and is pulled into another "world" to find another Laura. It takes "Carrie" a while to regain her memory the same as it did Dougie. The scream at the end of 18 is the first inkling of her remembrance.

Season 4 is Coop trying to reunite Carrie/Laura with her other constituent parts, ending the seemingly endless cycle of suffering perpetuated by Judy and thus severing our world's connection with the Black Lodge.

Laura keeps Judy at bay. They can coexist together. Judy arranged everything so that Laura ended up dying.

Again: dickrider with his head so far up his own gash he can't see the forest for the trees. What is it that ISN'T being spoonfed? Do you understand the distinction? What coherence is there in this story? How, for example, many Dianes are there, and why, and what scenes and lines from season 3 illustrate this, even if only opaquely?

It isn't explained in any way at all, spoonfed or not, because these lazy-ass motherfuckers just ran with every impulse and never bothered to determine whether it would actually all add up in any way at all. And it doesn't. Was Laura murdered, or not? Is Carrie Laura, or is it a tulpa, or perhaps a doppelganger? What. In the fuck. Is going on?

Nothing. They threw any semblance of logic out the fucking window once S2 ended.

And while we're on the topic, why was it necessary for him to murder a child? What happened to the witness he attempted to off, and why does she appear to have two different names? In what way at all was that thread useful or necessary for this show?

The finale had the least amount of filler in the entire season, what are you talking about? I mean, there was visual "filler" (I would debate the use of the term, however) in 18, what with the road shots, but there was no narrative filler at all. Everything was related to the main storyline.

Everyone will skip them. They are boring. We've already seen the night driving multiple times this season and this time it was drawn out too long and there wasn't any mood-setting music or ambient sound. It was boring, I mean I realized that was the point when they were pulling out of the gas station and Lynch had them wait for cars to pass. What's the point of that? Establishing that the show is realistic or something? No, its just being the absolute antithesis of a finale. It's like Lynch watched The Sopranos ending and scoffed at the idiots saying "nothing happened" and decided he was actually going to have a finale where nothing happens.

The ones in the finale were meant to build tension, which they did.

Just like the scene where Mr. C walks for like 5 minutes to Philip.

It was always going to end with Laura getting her memories, a 2 minute car ride or 10 minute one wouldnt change that
>>
>>87286422
There's probably some super convoluted explanation, maybe, but who cares? Lynch's entire career has been based on the pursuit of dream-logic. In dreams, shit just happens, and when you see it, it makes sense in on an abstract level, but when you wake up, you realize it didn't. I've learned to enjoy Lynch's work by not waking up.

The main thing I got from the car scene was how awkward it was for them. No talking. It didn't even seem friendly. If you just skipped ahead, you wouldn't know, and if there was just a 5 second shot of driving, you might just assume it was a lull. Lingering on it gives a fuller sense. All the way from Texas to Washington, driving in darkness and silence, afraid of being followed or something else going wrong at any moment.

I'm sorry my man but this is the end of Twin Peaks, there is no season 4, no movie. I am personally pretty disappointed with the finale. The ending scene itself was pretty good, but there is a good 30 minutes of boring, drawn out shit in the last episode. You can actually skip the driving, about 20 minutes of the episode, and miss nothing. That isn't good in my opinion, at least all the one off characters and scenes throughout the season had flavor, but this shit is completely bland.

Maybe that's all the point. Everyone will say LYNCHED and maybe they're right, but damn it could have been at least a little more interesting

The episode was just pure lynch slow burner. Some people hate it some people love it. I felt like it really added a lot of feeling and tension to what we were seeing. We were waiting for something big to happen and literally seeing the ride for it to come.

Yeah and maybe it is the end too. I think we got enough closure in general where I could live with that. But at the same time, it's a TV show that established and planted hints since the Return started about where it was all going- to Judy and the whole sequence at the last half of 18. And for it to end forever and ever without fully resolving that would be lame or just us getting lynched and trying to make out what it all means
