How would /who/ rank all of the Robert Holmes stories? Because mine would be from best to worst:

The Deadly Assassin
Talons of Weng-Chiang
The Caves of Androzani
Spearhead from Space
The Ark in Space
Carnival of Monsters
Pyramids of Mars
Terror of the Autons
The Time Warrior
The Ribos Operation
Brain of Morbius
The Sun Makers
That one episode of The Ultimate Foe
The Two Doctors
The Mysterious Planet
The Power of Kroll
The Krotons
The Space Pirates

>>87063440
He makes some fair enough points, and the sort of... over-use, I suppose, of the sonic screwdriver in new!who (which isn't a Chibnall-exclusive problem) really does irk me. Just because its existence in its current form - i.e. a magic wand that can pretty much do anything - allows them to forgo a lot of potentially interesting plot resolutions. Instead of the Doctor coming up with something legitimately clever or having a more hands-on approach to solving a problem, he just waves his sonic around a bit and it's all good.

An excellent example of that was in 4x01: Partners in Crime. Fun episode, but the overuse of the sonic was blindingly apparent in it. He even used it to untie someone, for fucks sake. Instead of taking a second to unknot the cables around her, he points his sonic at them, they spark and fall apart. It's such a minor thing, but it really demonstrates this idea that the sonic has become regarded as a sort of all-in-one plot solution. It's not a huge deal, and it doesn't always arise as an issue, but it's not as fun or interesting to watch when you get something like the bit in The Power of Three where waving the sonic at a screen is enough to totally undo a villainous plot that was a year in the making. Rest of that ep was comfy, at least.

Sorry, that wandered a little off-topic for a bit. I only mention it because it's a minor problem I'd like to be solved and Chibnall's track record, as highlighted in the video, doesn't give much hope for that.

>>87064236
That's really good, anon. My only recommendation would be to make the hair a bit darker, but other than that I can totally see the resemblance.
>>
>>87064248

>>
>>87063065
I don't think they would use a woman unless the real Doctor choice was also a woman. There would be so much feminist butthurt going on and would be really bad pr. I think this day and age a fake casting would be the only way to do a genuine surprise regeneration but I don't think they would do it.

>>
>>87064882
I'm going to ignore the first line of this post since it doesn't relate to the other situation.

The answer is that you're citing an episode in which the whole point is that the Doctor is breaking his moral code and it's a bad thing.
>>
>>87063552
Not at all. The only good parts are the scenes with Martha's mom and The Master's dudes which aren't even important to the main plot
>>
>>87065173
The Master was involved with that story? I honestly do not remember shit from it other than the movie Sunshine.
>>
Why do I have the feeling that regardless of how terrible some of the Chris Chibnall episodes are from his time as showrunner, Jodie Whittaker's Doctor will be the saving grace?
>>
>>87065218
There's a bit where Martha's mom is on the pine with her and she's being watched by Saxon's men

>>87065302

>>
>>87065273

>>
>>87063440
I agree, but I'm willing to give him a fair shot to prove me wrong. I just wish that being showrunner for Doctor Who didn't also mean writing a quarter or more of a season's episodes.

>>87065273
Because that's what happens every fucking time.
>>
>>87065302
>>87065377
Was the episode that forgettable that I completely missed this even during the first time I ever viewed it?
>>
>>87065273
Well that's the same with all the showrunners really. I feel like there have been no "bad" doctors so far. Some that are worse than the others, sure, but no one I would say did a bad job and no matter how shitty the script the Doctor always does a great job
>>
>>87065273
She probably will be. Or maybe Chibnall will really shine when he's got a whole series to work with rather than a random one-off episode. He might end up the opposite of Moffat, in a way, since some of Moffat's best episodes are those with self-contained stories that could theoretically be watched in total isolation and still work well, whereas he stumbles a bit when trying to knit together a coherent series-long plotline.

Literally the only Capaldi special that bothered with that was LC.

Moffat's already said he doesn't care about sending off himself.
>and being a good multi-Doctor episode
Only featuring two Doctors makes this less difficult than it sounds.
>>
>>87072558
Then let them come. Just my opinion, but let artistic integrity win: only when the author wants to change the names, then you should change the names. Otherwise, keep the names intact.

>Moffat's already said he doesn't care about sending off himself
Well it'll still have to be a proper send off to Capaldi
>Only featuring two Doctors makes this less difficult than it sounds
But a good multi-Doctor story should be about the chemistry between the two (or more) Docs, when this story should be sending off Capaldi. Also, a large part of the fanbase probably hasn't even seen very many Hartnell episodes so they'll have to reintroduce him and his companions

>OK, so? It still is one more thing it has to juggle
I'm saying it doesn't have to "juggle" that to be good, and it probably won't, if Capaldi's previous Christmas episodes are any indication. Mysterio has a Christmas tree in it for like 1 minute. Literally all you need is some minor decoration,

>But a good multi-Doctor story should be about the chemistry between the two (or more) Docs, when this story should be sending off Capaldi.
An episode solely to tribute Capaldi is redundant when Heaven Sent exists. Giving him another character to play off, even a fake Hartnell, doesn't take away from the fact he's the incumbent Doctor and it's his story that is going to be the most important. Dovetailing with the first ever regeneration is also bestowing an even bigger honour on Capaldi's by weaving it into the lore.
>they'll have to reintroduce him and his companions
I seriously do not expect the companions to be relevant beyond ten second cameos when One exits/returns to the plot of The Tenth Planet.

Yeah, the likelihood of Stalkford actually reading Shit Trips in the first place are low, and even if he does there's nothing he can do about it. I could understand being hesitant if it were taking the piss out of someone different, but this guy is a total creeper and bully. Fuck him.

(On a related note, it really doesn't need a "content warning" in the front like last time. We're one click away from boards devoted to trap hentai, a bit of filth is expected.)

If you want a 40th Anniversary, Multi-Doctor spectacle Zagreus is terrible. If you want to hear Big Finish give everything they got no matter the outcome then it kills a few hours. Zagreus is ultimately a mere stepping stone that transitions the Eighth Doctor's audios up to that point to the controversial Divergent Universe arc. It's not nearly as big a deal as it probably should have been. Doesn't help that the very next Eighth Doctor audio is Scherzo which is GOAT tier.

Putting my EDA knowledge to good use and giving each of the books a wiki page, cus nobody else has done it already, surprisingly. I'll try catch up to where I'm at so far in my read-through, then I'll be able to make a wiki page for each book as I finish them, instead of all at once. Anyways, if anyone's interested in the first one:

http://doctorwhogeneral.wikia.com/wiki/The_Eight_Doctors

I'm gonna have to rewrite the actual EDA page to have a place to put the links, probably, but I'll get round to that when I have a better grasp of wiki formatting.

As far as I've read, the original author has given his permission to change the names within his own story at Immigrant's discretion.

If it was about changing the names in all the stories, it would be one thing, but it's not, it's about changing the names in exactly one story, whose author has given permission to do so.

As far as I am concerned, it's already been addressed, and the argument is being dragged out longer than it is.

>>
>>87075811
Neither. He can't be either.
There is no canon. But he wasn't joking in the movie if that's what you mean. The master noticed it and later the Doctor confirmed it. It was never meant as a lie or a joke.
>>
>>87075806
where?
if it exists how do we not know a random anon isn't just taking the claim to end said argument
or are we just taking gallifrey at his word
i dont think gallifrey has the objectivity to edit anyone's story

>>
>>87075811
Technically Wilderness, though if I had to pick, it would be Classic, as he's closer to that era than modern Who.

On the fence on that.
>>
>>87075686
That's a good point. Part of the issue is that every author I've asked had no issue with me making edits if I wanted to. Even before I made the name-changes, I asked the author, and he said "yes."

/who/'s culture isn't quite the same as 4chan's culture. And "free speech" doesn't give the right to be cruel, or mean. Even Orford, despicable as his actions are, is a person; and I'm not sure Jenna Coleman would appreciate a story where Orford mind-controls her into sex, no matter how admittedly funny the story is.

Also, I don't want Orford to get ammo to unfairly criticize this wonderful community, just for one story's sake. He's already claimed we slandered him, despite that not being true. Some people are too unstable in their reactions to play jokes on--they take the reaction too far. I don't want /who/ to get banned because someone misinterpreted a joke story in /who/.

It's those sort of concerns that made me squeamish. It's not necessarily content--I made almost no edits to a "12 and Clara BDSM dungeon" explicit fic, after all.
>>
>>87076019

>Would you consider Eight to be Classic or Nuwho?
Classic, if I had to choose. But he sorta occupies his own niche in between, and imo he's the Doctor whose stories best pushed the boundaries of what the show (or, rather, its universe) could really be, just by virtue of the fact that he existed mostly in mediums that allowed for that sort of creativity without all the restrictions of budgets or technology. So, in a way, he's his own sort of thing: the only true wilderness era Doctor.

>Do you consider Eight being half human to be canon?
I've talked about this before, but yes and no. There's no real canon, so it's whatever one chooses to make of it. Eight himself refers to it throughout his novels and stuff, but it always comes back to this idea that he doesn't really know himself, and his timeline is so twisted and complicated that it's almost as if anything goes. (And, as I've mentioned previously, the half-human thing is a tricky one because of the significance it detracts from the Doctor's willingness to engage with and help humanity. There's a lot more gravitas to it when he doesn't really have a reason for it other than out of the kindness of his own hearts.)

>>87076108
>Do you think that a trait like that could lie dormant and only show up in a few regenerations?
It's kinda implied a few times that that's sorta what happened. Like, all his other regenerations are fully Time Lord, but for some reason Eight has some fundamental genetic differences. But that stance will change depending on which books you read and all.

Yeah, it's not really that far-fetched when you remember that Time Lords can regenerate into other species anyway. I mean, Romana could, if that blue-skinned form she briefly had is anything to go by. Given how regeneration works, it's believable enough that they could change at least partially into species with similar cellular structures. But that's just one theory amongst many, really.
>>
>>87077481
There's always the idea he was contaminated by the surgery somehow, too, like maybe one of Grace's skin cells or something got in the way of the regeneration energy and fused with his DNA (a bit like how Ten gave the Dalek slaves a little bit of his genes through the lightning bolt, in Evolution of the Daleks)

Yeah, that's another possibility, and perfectly viable too. The thing I like about the whole half-human thing is that there's really no right or wrong side to it. It's really representative of Doctor Who's canon in general: it's ultimately what you make of it. With so many conflicting concepts, you really just gotta pick and choose for yourself what you like best of it all.
>>
>>87078277

>>87078383
>There's so much content and it's essentially up to everyone to decide what is or isn't canon.
Indeed. As much as people can try to pretend otherwise, there's truly no right or wrong, which means that everyone is free to enjoy what they want and have it be just as valid as everything else. Of course, you could technically feel this way about anything, but at least in Doctor Who that's the official stance. It's comfy!

>it's almost impossible for one person to run out of Who content to enjoy
Yeah, and by the time you've made a significant dent in all the stuff that already exists, there'll be even more waiting for you that's all brand new. Sometimes, I don't think Who fans truly appreciate just how good we've got it.

I feel like Doctor Who is the only show where you can decide what is canon and it doesn't ruin it. >I feel like Doctor Who is the only show where you can decide what is canon and it doesn't ruin it.
Pretty much - at least of all the shows I can think of, anyway. It's just the nature of it all, with the malleability of time itself being such a core concept of the show, it allows so much wiggle room in regards to what may or may not have happened.

>if I decide I don't like something in say, Star Wars, it completly changes the rest of the movies and won't fit
To an extent, yeah. Of everything that's out there, something like Star Wars is probably most comparable to Doctor Who - not just for the space stuff, but because it too has an expanded universe that explores certain concepts in far greater depths than the movies ever could, or would. But it "suffers" (if you could call it that) from having an established canon, so all those SW Legends fans got properly btfo'd when Disney took over. Not that they still can't enjoy the content, but it must feel a bit different to those fans knowing that The Powers That Be essentially declared their favourite stuff non-relevant, and officially non-existent in that fictional universe they love so much. I feel bad for them, and somewhat glad I never allowed myself to get properly into the Star Wars EU, because I know I'd have been pretty dismayed about it all.

But, eh, the whole basic premise of Star Wars is one that leaves room for the possibility of alternate universes, so hope isn't entirely lost. The difference between that and Doctor Who, though, is that with the latter, it's not a case of "there's one singular established line of stories, but everything outside is an alternate universe entirely" because that's as good as saying, "well, this stuff is canon, and that stuff is not, but if you'd like to *pretend*, then go ahead!" which isn't... necessarily good, either. Instead, Doctor Who is more like "listen, who fucking knows? it's a mess. it's too confusing to decide what's canon, so you do that yourself."

The "smaller" things (if you could call them that) that really get me in the show are all the references to how utterly lonely the Doctor is. Maybe it's just because it hits home or whatever, but even a passing comment about it and I'll end up thinking about it a bunch and making myself sad.

Man, Paul McGann's career still baffles me. He did some great stuff over his career and was a big deal for a few years. Now he's doing a soap and not one of the better ones either. Shit agent, the lack of parts for actors his age (especially for those who don't have a few BAFTAs), the curse of sci-fi, failure to network adequetely, or what? He might have done a few duds but you can't really blame the actors for shit direction and wank writing. He's a good actor, especially on stage IMO.

The Muskateers sent out a press release calling him a guest star for a three minute stint, and he just helped give a tiny independent theatre company's national tour press coverage they wouldn't have got without him. Coverage of Ahearne's B&B focuses on his name too. That makes him a good choice for supporting roles at least, surely? Few actors his age still have a name. :-/

He's definitely still a recognisable name with older generations - hell, most of the McGann brothers are. It's kinda surprising that his career has, for want of a better word, stagnated, because he's definitely talented (and as you say, he's particularly good on stage) and he's definitely well known. And he looks exceptionally good for his age, too, so even if there's a lack of roles for actors within that specific age range, he could easily pass for someone younger. There's nothing about him that would suggest he'd struggle to get roles, so I can only assume he's not pursuing them by choice. He's got a net worth of over £5mill - at least according to various websites - so maybe he's just not that much in need of work, and is choosing less intensive roles (like Holby City) out of a desire to continue acting, without getting too heavily into it, at least for now.

But, eh. Who knows? It's a mystery, and the only person who could shed some light on it is McGann himself.

>>87083089
Visually, it's not as good as it could be - except for that hug scene towards the end, that was GOAT. It played with a lot of big ideas that sorta got lost in translation from script to screen (which Moffat himself admitted), but the story is solid enough, and always gets me right in the heart no matter how many times I watch it. It's definitely a comfy ep.

For all his faults I thought RTD's run had a greater amount of small emotional moments during his tenure. While Moffat seemed to have started with good intentions in Season5 there are quite a lot of "this is how you should feel" points that don't quite hit in the seasons that followed.
For example Eccleston's tear when Jabe says how sorry she is about his planet in The End of the World, understated and explained quite clearly how pained he is, not many Moffat moments can touch that.

Eh. If anything, Moffat underplays his emotional moments TOO much. I can't count how many times I've seen people not notice hugely powerful moments in the Capaldi finales.

The discord is inevitable. Deep down we all know it's eventually going to happen. The form I see it taking is a publicly open Discord that either starts off as a joke amongst the trips+regulars, or develops off the GURPS game we eventually do.

PROS
-No captchas
-No post time limits
-No worries about janitors, bans, other 4chan issues
-Built-in stream

CONS
-Some possible drama (no more than we'd have anyway)
-Not everyone comfortable with instantaneous chat
-Leeches off /who/ (not really, if it's public then it's just an offshoot like the stream, /who/ is /who/ regardless of whether it's on 4chan, cytube, or discord)

MORE PROS
-Can use different channels
-Bypasses the whole tripcode debate/drama
-Keeps out boardies
>>
>>87084342
i wouldn't be opposed to a discord where discussion of doctor who and /who/ events was completely banned. so it'd only be used for things considered off topic here
>>
>>87084429
That's...actually a interesting idea. Would bypass people get annoyed at so much off topic talk, but keep /who/ /who/.
>>
>>87084342
>The discord is inevitable.
It's really not, anon. People value the format and anonymity of 4chan too much, and the publicity of it all. I doubt anyone would want to break that up, and even if they did, they'd have a hard job convincing any significant amount to join. It'd be dead pretty quick, if it would ever live at all.

>>87084429
>>87084467
Significantly off-topic stuff is sparse enough that it doesn't really warrant a whole chat for it, imo. It at least keeps /who/ a little bit more active than it otherwise would be during off-season.
>>
>>87084429
>discussion of doctor who and /who/ events was completely banned
I dunno how long that would last
>>
>>87084542
Then why are there so many trips? Obviously the community is morphing into something where anonymity is being valued less.
This is not a bad thing but it's naive to act like there aren't some valid points here.
>>
Just saying...I'd totally join a discord just to not have to deal with captchas and post time limits.

There's a fair amount of trips, yeah, but it's hardly as though we outnumber anons. I guess it might seem that way sometimes when a lot of us are active and talking at once, but I promise you, we're still in the minority here.

I do understand the points being made, though - by no means am I trying to discredit them. I just don't think a Discord would be well received by the majority on /who/, and if one was made, it would inevitably leech activity away from here, when it's already lacking at times during off-season. I personally don't see any good reason to effectively split the community like that, and alienate certain people who might prefer one format over the other.

Speaking of trips, I forgot clearing my cache and all that shit removes mine. end me

>>87084791
Me. I'm just an idiot.
>>
>>87084841
Good points (whether you're making them as an anon or as a trip!).

I suppose I just don't really agree with the idea that /who/ is inherently tied to 4chan forever. Does that mean the wikia somehow isn't /who/? The streams, maybe you could argue (although I'd disagree), but the wiki, nothing is more /who/ than that. So the leeching activity, I get it, but I see it more as leeching from 4chan rather than leeching from /who/. However there is benefit to the archives on 4chan now I think of it.

Perhaps Cats idea of an offtopic Discord is best, I know some anons and trips get self-concious about talking about offtopic things at length (they shouldn't be, it's only natural for conversations to go different directions).

In any case, I don't think there's a rush or anything, but I do think the fact offseason /who/ is so comfy between the regulars (be they anon or trip) will eventually lead to something changing. Not a bad thing at all, a good thing, but a change, very Doctor Who in spirit.

Also for the record, not all these Discord responses in the thread have been me if it looks that way, I didn't say >>87084745
for instance.

>I suppose I just don't really agree with the idea that /who/ is inherently tied to 4chan forever.
In a way, if we're going to get all poetic about it, /who/ is bigger than just the thread on 4chan, yeah. It's a pretty unique community for a general thread, and a comfy one. But ultimately, /who/ was formed here initially, and this thread is at the core of it all, so even if it was agreed - for whatever reason - that a move elsewhere would be beneficial, you'd find people resistant to that just on principle. All the stuff like the streams and the wiki - they're not replacements for the general, just off-shoot little things that provide something 4chan itself cannot; either someplace to watch things together, or a place to document all the memes /who/'s come up with over the years in a form far more coherent than thread archives. Neither of those things leech activity from the general, not truly. You could make an argument for the stream, but it's usually only a small handful in there for at most a couple of hours at a time, and even then they're often still posting here throughout.

Ultimately, as much as we have a lot more trips here than other generals might, the majority do still appreciate the anonymity that 4chan offers. Some don't like the idea of having their opinions permanently tied to an easily searchable username, and that's okay, but in such a case, a Discord would be the antithesis of the sort of thing they come to /who/ for. It's really just inevitable that any sort of external chat would cause a divide in the community. Hell, relocating /who/ has been attempted before, and it just straight-up didn't work. I just don't think it'd be possible, even if the majority were in favour (which they very much are not, as far as I'm aware).

>Perhaps Cats idea of an offtopic Discord is best
I didn't have my trip on for my earlier response to Cats' suggestion, but I stand by it: I don't personally feel that non-/who/ related discussion arises enough to warrant a separate chat for it. Given that the off-topic stuff most people dislike (although there haven't been any complaints for a little while) is personal shit, it'd be a pretty weird and sometimes depressing Discord. At least that off-topic stuff is sandwiched between regular /who/ discussions here, so it's not just all the woes of the world concentrated in one place. I also don't think any off-topic chat would manage to remain so for overly long. Intentionally or not, it'd end up gravitating towards who-related conversations eventually, because that interest is ultimately what we all have in common, and then we get right back to my initial point with dividing the community.

I mean, I could always be terribly wrong about all of this and I've completely misjudged /who/ and what they might want, but I do feel like the promotion any sort of external chat would inevitably lead to drama, like it has a number of times in the past.

Okay, there. Done typing.
