I do. Why should every anniversary be the exact same? We have so many indulgent fanwank anniversaries. The Light at the End is right there when we just want a comfy reunion special. Merci beaucoup, monsieur Neo. I'm rather relieved that most people seem to have agreed with what I said, last thing I'd want to do is to seem like I trying was speaking for /who/ (not that I was attempting to do that) without having a fucking clue what was going on.
>>
>>87099976
"Technically, it shouldn't be possible that he remembers. Each time he burns himself up to power the teleport, he prints a new version of the man he was, with only the memories he had on arrival. So what does he mean, when he says he remembers, when he clearly can't? Well first, memory is a funny thing - we manufacture memories all the time. Stories your parents told you about you when you were a baby become memories you can't really have. The party you remember going to at school, and then discover you could never have attended. Memories become stories, the Doctor tells us. But I think stories become memories, too. So in that moment when the Doctor figures out the only way to break through the wall is to keep making new versions of himself, and puts it together with the fact that seven thousands years have passed without time travel, and realises that, oh dear God, he's been doing that very thing for a long time, it feels like he remembers. In that plunging moment, he feels the weight of the centuries behind, and the horror of the millennia ahead. In other words, he makes a memory where one can't exist.

That's 1 explanation. Personally, I think there's more to it. Remember, he's trapped inside his own confession dial. The castle chambers, and the monster slouching towards him, are composed of his own worst nightmares, and his nightmares are composed of his worst memories. In a world designed to suck your bad dreams from your mind and feed them back to you, isn't it possible that his worst day - the one he's living right now, again and again - is hanging in the air around him? He's trapped in the Wi-Fi of his bad dreams, and he can't shut them out.

So, yes, I suppose he has 4.5 billion years worth of memories in his head. But loads of the details are identical, so for the Doctor's sake, let's assume that a lot of data compression is possible! He's the Doctor - surely he's as clever as a digital download (especially as he sort of is one now)."

I really, really, really wish we could get "An Adventure in Space and Time" type docudramas of not only every actor for the Doctor, but all the major players in Doctor Who history, like Holmes and JNT and RTD and Moff and all the rest. There's so much crazy stuff and stories to tell.

>>
In Heaven Sent, after the Doctor gets out of the water he sees a copy of his clothes waiting for him, dry, in front of the fire, and as we learn later this was from the previous version of him to go through the Confession dial. Since it was left by the last version, I love to imagine the first time the Doctor arrived in the confession dial, with the last three quarters of the episode him being completely nude

Nah I don't think you misunderstood it, Moff is just offering a different interpretation. If he wanted it to only be taken one way, he wouldn't have written it in a way you could take it different ways.

I'm pretty sure Moff has offered a clever explanation for this too, but I prefer the idea of naked 12 scrambling around the castle.

Yeah, I got bored last night and since the wiki doesn't have any proper EDA pages yet, I figured I might as well take on the insurmountable task. Just gotta get caught up with where I am in the books right now, then I can make a page for each as I go along. (Glad you liked it, as well. I didn't intend for it to end up so long, but writing it all out was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it'd be!)

Physically, no. Mentally... Yes? Sort of? It's up to the viewer, really. But since all that time was spent doing the exact same thing over and over and over, the years are kinda null and void because nothing new was really learned over the course of them. Aside from what was figured out within the actual episode, of course.

I love pics of McGann/Fisher so much, really helps conceptualise their audios. They were so, so amazing.
Nice to see the Brig there too. I know they got him in those first sessions they got McGann for, cause they weren't sure McGann would come back again, they wanted to give the Brig a story with 8 while they had the chance, and they already had that old Minuet in Hell script from the Audio Visuals.
LITTLE DID THEY KNOW...McGann would never leave! :D

To be fair, while I genuinely love Moffat's Wi-Fi Heaven Sent explanation, I do have to laugh at how he kinda forks in Wi-Fi metaphors to other things that don't always work as well. The Bells of Saint John's "I DON'T KNOW WHERE I AM!" thing is pretty funny.

I don't even understand the machine in that episode, was it just a cloning device or did it transplant his mental consciousness from the first version onto each subsequent version? I can't help but think that the "real" doctor died first and that each doctor after that is a clone. So the original doctor is technically dead.

There's multiple ways to explain what actually happened in Heaven Sent. Ultimately, as with everything, it's up to you to decide. I don't personally have strong feelings on it either way, I like reading everyone's theories on just who, exactly, the Doctor is by the time he exits that confession dial.

>>87100680
>I love pics of McGann/Fisher so much, really helps conceptualise their audios.
Yeah, they seem to have so much chemistry in general, you can really properly imagine the chemistry that Eight and Charley have, when you see them together.

>they weren't sure McGann would come back again
Imagine what a genuinely dark timeline we'd be living in if he hadn't. A world without Eight's audios is a world scarcely worth living in.
>>
>>87100947
I agree with Moff that it's ultimately just up to interpretation, but personally...I really, really like and prefer the idea that it really is all clones, and that the Doctor who makes it to Hell Bent is just the last clone in a long, long line of them.

Heaven Sent is like a triumph of determinism - "You won't see this coming!" the Doctor repeats billions and billions of times. He's a finely-tuned machine. He repeats (virtually) the same actions every time, exhibits the same love, honour, tenacity every time. We're all machines in the end, whether organic or mechanical. To me personally, that's a really beautiful thing. I like the idea that his actual consciousness swims around in the air since the Confession Dial is like a repository for his soul almost, but I also really like the idea that he literally does completely die and just clones himself billions of times.

Also why I really liked the "breaking the wall" music playing in The Doctor Falls when the Doctor fights the Cybermen - he's as much a machine as them, in a way, except he's full of emotions, love, humanity. But every time, every time he fights the Cybermen, he'll do all he can for love, peace, etc.
>>
>>87100927

>>
>>87101075
It was simply a teleporter that worked how one would actually work in real life, killing you and creating an exact replica of you somewhere else, the Doctor just made another replica of himself every time he died.

And anon, the original Doctor died In 1966

The later ones are no more or less a clone than the first one. It was the same process of materialisation happening from the beginning, the only difference is that the first one happened at the same time he got zapped out of London.

Moffat's Who is known to treat consciousness a bit magically and independently of the physical body (see Rory somehow having his Auton memories and Amy knowing what happened in TWORS) so teleporter extentialism's not worth worrying about IMO.

>>
>>87101604
I never said it's the original version of the 12th Doctor, the true original version never went to the confession dial since he was teleported there, he actually died on the trap street
>>
How many times have people used teleporters in NuWho and no-one's batted an eyelid or insisted that they'd 'really died'? But one case of a character teleporting to billions of different points simultaneously, and suddenly everybody loses their minds.
>>
>>87101809
Could be because every other teleport didn't involve the character dying and being brought back to life with no memories from before their death.
>>
What was the comfiest 12/Bill/Nardole moment?
>>
>>87101809
desu i never considered this, but the amount of teleporter "deaths" is insignificant to the amount of times he "died" in the confession dial.

How long did each loop last anyway?
A few hours? A day? A week? He definatly died far more than 4.5 billion times if he was there for 4.5 billion years
>>
>>87102432
I've wondered this myself I would probably say 6 months to a year
>>
>>87102432
>the amount of teleporter "deaths" is insignificant to the amount of times he "died" in the confession dial.
It's virtually the exact same number
>>
>>87102541
What? I'll admit i haven't watched much of classic who, but surely the amount of times the doctor has used a teleporter over the entire course of the show doesnt come close to that figure.

Even if you count each use of the Tardis (I don't, as i thought it just moves through the time vortex and just appears to be dematerialising to the observer.)

So i've been trying to write one last shit trip before the deadline. One where the Doctor visits a virtual version of /who/

but t b h it's neither fun nor written well,
the only vaguely interesting ideas i had was that
/tv/ was a long hallway with many doors to each thread/room and the hallway walls had CTR's and LCD's embedded in them. Also, anons were silhouettes and trips were just out of focus. Everyone started becoming trips and got locked in the thread.
Can't really think of a way to satisfyingly end it, just wanted to write a fun story that captures the essences of /who/.

explration
>>

Yeh, nott to repeat the others too much, but what happened was (according to the Doctor's Dialogue) was that the Doctor let the thing kill him, but before he died he realized that all the resetting rooms meant that his own energy pattern was still in the transporter, so he used his own body as fuel to make a new copy... basically cloning himself until he could break through the wall.

Just realized Lie of the Land would've retroactively made the entire trilogy worthwhile/ would have at least been a lot better, if the Doctor really did join the monks and it was done so so simply by saying the brainwashing was affecting him as well. Then Bill could've done whatever the fuck to get the plot back on track, honestly she should've shot him and snapped him out of it/convinced him to believe her if she was willing to kill her and trust her despite still being affected. Anything but that ridiculous fakeout scene that made the Doctor complicit in 6 months of global facism and sending people to labor camps and executions.

I can't believe I'm still so salty about the monks. How would you have fixed them, /who/?

*willing to kill him

that sentence is a trainwreck I'm sorry

Does anyone else here have sort of pictures they associate with the trips, like whenever you read their posts, you picture that as them? I think for me it's influenced by pictures they've attached to their posts.

Whenever I read Neo's posts, I imagine him as Missy, specifically from the WE&T dab scene.

Whenever I read Guy With An Art Degree's posts, I always see the Third Doctor drinking wine from Day of the Daleks.

Is this weird of me?

It's a bit more abstract for me; I tend to associate the other trips with concepts, and things that they're known for. Like you with edits and music, for example. There are exceptions, though:

Jodie says ''i'm playing an alien, so genders not part of that''

Did she just assume aliens can't have genders?

Also i'm pro female doctor. But it makes me sad they are trying to erase that the Doctor was a male. Like he was a fucking male, he was referenced as such by dozens of characters.

>he was a fucking male, he was referenced as such by dozens of characters.
Because of the body he was in at the time, but if you want to get into it, there's no actual guarantee the Doctor has ever viewed himself in such clear-cut terms. I mean, if you consider the novels to be at all relevant, there's even an exchange wherein Eight outright states he doesn't consider himself a man, or a woman. (And if there's any doubt about what he was referring to - species or gender - the wording "not even" confirms the latter.) Of course, that attitude may be regeneration-specific, but who knows?

Basically, as Twelve said himself in WEAT, for Time Lords, gender isn't as big a deal as it is to humans, and as much as the audience has spent all this time thinking of the Doctor as a man, the character himself probably never identified with that half as much we think he did. Sure, he uses the pronouns, refers to himself as a "man" where it's at all relevant, but that doesn't mean he had some deep internal connection to that particular gender.

Thirteen comes along and, if Chibnall handles it appropriately, she shouldn't be at all perturbed by her new regeneration - I'm hoping she'll just shrug it off like "oh, interesting, i've never had a body like this before," and that'll be that.

Anyways, Jodie presumably only meant that we're dealing with an alien race with different attitudes to gender entirely, so it shouldn't be a huge deal to us if the Doctor's now a woman, because it probably won't be one to her.

Hm, just remembered there's a few more references to the Eighth Doctor's attitude on all this stuff throughout the EDAs. The one pictured above is - obviously - from Beltempest, but out of sheer interest, I dug up two more explicit references to it from other books.

I mean, take it all as you will. Some people don't even consider the novels to be at all relevant, but the concept of the Doctor being indifferent to gender isn't a new one.
