I think because the story of >The RETURN is focusing on Cooper making his way back to TP so the scenes set in TP are largely just to set the mood/communicate the mostly fucked up aspects of the town that have evolved or festered for years. Idk what people were expecting instead honestly. Imo we saw just enough glimpses of current day life of the characters.

The most obvious is Laura Palmer, surely. Since the very first episode Twin Peaks has been about death, the effects of death. Since this season has also been very closely tied to FWWM, you can also look at it in terms of death being a final destination for characters (I wouldn't be surprised if this entire season has been leading up to the ending of FWWM)

Another is the Dougie storyline. It's done all the stages of the life cycle -- birth, toddler, childhood, adolescence, maturity, death (that we possibly saw in part 15)

Death looms thematically over the entire season. Things coming to a close, endings, reckoning with non-existence.

Not to mention the theme of sacrifice. Part 8 seems to imply that Laura Palmer was a martyr, a grand sacrifice, a messiah. But she is dead and her spirit seems sick, possibly also inhabiting her own living mother. Either way, a grand exorcism has to take place. I think it's going to involve the death of Sarah Palmer (similar to Leland's) and it will result in the Palmer family being reunited in the other world.
