No actor (male or female) as the Doctor is going to top Capaldman in Heaven Sent. That episode was the peak of Doctor Who artistry.

I'm thinking of quitting watching when Chinballs takes over. Just not a fan of his previous Torchwood and Who writing contributions.

I can guarantee right now that the show will have higher viewing figures with Chibnall and Whittaker than with Peter Capaldi. Certainly with the first series, with the draw of having a female Doctor for the first time.

Peter Capaldi is now, and I believe will continue to be, the least popular Modern Doctor, by some distance.

It's probably one of those Colin Baker/McCoy situations where the actual quality (or lack of) in their episodes is overshadowed by petty ratings concerns. (As an experiment, it'd be interesting to see how someone's view of his era formed if you gave them no information on whether it had been """successful""" or not)
>>
>>86903111
The entirety of Ghost Light
>>
There's this era of pure kino. It takes 39 episodes to watch it, and 39 episodes to get around it. And every episode, a little /who/re comes, and sharpens it's taste on the pure kino. And when the entire era has faded away, the first second of its reappraisal will have passed.
>>
>>86903113
Or maybe if Chibnall was more insistent on a better advertising campaign than Moffat was. I don't remember Doctor Who having that many adverts prior to the Series 10 premiere, compared to the bombardment of ads and promotion we got during the RTD era.

>"Now bear in mind, that's what she's famous for. If I had said that to Jude Law, fair enough. That's an insult. She's a cleaner!
>"She looked at me and said something on the lines of, 'When I want an opinion of a fat man, I'll stand outside Gregg's'. It was a proper f**k you, an old-fashioned f**k you, and I just sort of laughed to myself that here she was having a dig because I genuinely hadn't meant it as an insult. It really f**king spiralled out of control."
>Hound added that the back and forth became deeply unpleasant.
>"It ended up really horrible," he said. "She was trying to be deliberately personal, and by the point it got to that place, I was like, 'Okay, because I'm a stand-up comedian and if you want to start heckling, I'm good at this'. And so I was personal back.

lol no

You'll have one episode of higher ratings, then everyone will realize no one actually wanted a female doctor and that Chibnall's inability to keep his cancerous ideology out of his writing is beyond obnoxious.
>>
Anyone else think its stupid that no one seems to accept that comedians can also sometimes act? when catherinr tate, michelle gomez, matt lucas, and now maybe bradley walsh, if the rumour turns out to be true, theres always been a huge amount of backlash. well maybe not huge, but based on conversations ive had irl, people just have to complain about comedians being allowed slightly more serious roles. i mean doctor who is a family show anyway, not a fucking serious work of art. i dont need every actor to be the next anthony hopkins
>>
>>86905971
looks pretty great though, with all the light coming out as well. great for a billboard, but the doors going inward is better looking in the actual show.
>>
>>86906183
you'll have one episode of higher ratings as people check out what shes like. then theyll realise gender doesnt make a difference, and the ratings will be dependent on chibnall who, and how appealing it is to the mainstream (not neccessarily better or worse, just more marketable)

I like the Twelfth Doctor, but I agree. I the 13th Doctor ends up actually being good, the 12th Doctor will end up sandwiched between the Eleventh Doctor, who rode the popularity wave of Ten and brought it higher, and the first female Doctor. The Twelfth Doctor era largely hasn't been perceived as having the same impact (due to many factors, the hiatus included), so although he is definitely a great Doctor, he'll probably be the least popular, or second-least popular, amoung the casual public.
>>
>>86904507

I wasn't really trying to write any particular doctor, but i felt i was leaning more towards for Eight, partly because he's my favourite (though i do have a fondness for the Third's charm) and i'm more familiar with him than the classic doctors, and the nu-who doctor (barring nine) seem larger than life, and eight just seems more down to earth

Hi lym! Would you actually believe that I barely knew anything at all about Eight back in those days? I was intrigued by him, because I vaguely knew of his existence, but nothing beyond that. I've been interested in Doctor Who for a while (since 2010, so not long in the grand scheme of things) but it's only within recent years that I've had the time and motivation to start looking beyond new!who, and with Eight in particular, as much as I love him, there's still a lot I don't know. Mostly because he has so many stories, and it can take a while to work through them all, but I'm managing it, one-by-one.

Now I've gone and ruined the mystique, but I suppose I'm infamous for my love for Eight, not necessarily my all-encompassing knowledge. Give me time, though, because I'm very much working on obtaining the latter!

Just because someone hosts a game show, that doesn't mean they're incapable of doing anything else. Maybe it's that way in America, but in Britain, it's very common to see actors and comedians and people of all talents hosting all sorts of different shows, regardless of their background. Walsh has a lot of solid acting experience under his belt, and his appearance on a game show doesn't automatically render that experience null and void.

>>86911440
I think /who/ is one of the most accepting generals for trips. As long as you're not annoying you'll be fine - Edge, Neo, and Gallifrey_Immigrant are examples of this.

For a tripcode you give yourself a name and then put a password after it, for example, NAME#password will set your name as NAME instead of Anonymous, and then put a encrypted string of characters after it. This set of characters will always be the same if you put the EXACT same password in.
>>

It's good Doctor Who but it's fucking terrible A Christmas Carol. The original is the greatest story ever told and the message is simple: consider your entire life, everyone around you and you'll decide to be a nicer person. (This is a simple concept for time travel to be added to.)

The message of the Who episode: the Doctor will fuck about with your personal history, erasing the actual you in favour of one he prefers. It's a grossly authoritarian vision of a renegade time traveller... played for laughs with zero concerns.

>>
>>86913170
The funny thing is that Moffat recycled the concept of the Doctor rewriting someone's life to get his own way from his first Doctor Who short story, Continuity Errors. But that story actually presents the idea as something disturbing, whereas in A Christmas Carol it's supposed to be a good thing.

If they were going to cancel Doctor Who becayse of actual quality rather than ratings, they would have cancelled it after Season 16
>>
>>86913170
It is basically the story of a god interfering with a helpless mortal, like something out of Greek mythology. In those stories, the whims of the divine are like a force of nature that the human characters just have to learn to tolerate (with a measure of faith that the gods will show them mercy). The view of life the author's advancing comes through in how the gods apply their abilities, and this could be to comic or tragic effect. The unfairness of this arrangement might occasionally be acknowledged by the human characters, but the rules of the world are absolute.

The Doctor and co frequently take a powerless or vulnerable position in the earliest serials, but it's unavoidable that travelling in time - in a way, meddling with history every time they land - is an exercise of divine power. The show operates on our own faith that, since he will definitely use it, he'll hopefully use it for good. Generally our faith is rewarded, and that's why he's the hero.
In this case, the rules are that being a monstrous tyrant who's willing to sit by and watch innocent people die just for the edgy laughs, means you're fair game to get your life overwritten with a more fun one, whether you want it or not, and the existential horror of that will be glossed over by the narrative.
By this, the episode conveys a worldview which is sympathetic to radical action against injustice, and fairly unconcerned with how the perpetrators of injustice feel about it - while also suffused with a childlike hedonism that prefers playtime, innocence and romance over hanging the bourgeoisie. It's a cheeky one that we're primed to accept.
Which is why people go along with the renegade time travel rather than fretting about the moral implications; it's being deployed in a way we like to watch, even if deep down we know it's not really a fair use of power.

This isn't completely foreign to the original either. Scrooge received a divine intervention of sorts, a traumatic one even.

I've been thinking about it since another anon mentioned it earlier. I don't particularly wish to draw undue attention to myself (although, I guess my posts are recognisable enough) but I suppose it would at least be a courtesy to anyone who dislikes the constant McGann talk, so they'd be able to filter it.

>>86917130
As much as 10 isn't near the top of my list when it comes to favourite Doctors, his tenure in general just has this looming presence of a very particular subset of fans, which probably sours him in /who/'s eyes. I wonder how people would've felt about 10 if he wasn't so heavily associated with being the fan-favourite of the masses.

For the others, I honestly couldn't begin to guess why there's particular favouritism for certain Doctors (though I don't necessarily think it's as cut-and-dry as "/who/ likes these Doctors, but don't really care for these ones," given the diversity of opinion here)... except for 8, of course. Never met a person who outright disliked him, but I see no reason why they could. Not that I'm biased or anything.

Like what pre s8 new series thing like new earth would I pick to make a spinoff around? Hmm...Neil Gaiman's original ideas for Nightmare in Silver involved explaining the Mondasian and Cybus Cybermen meeting up and deciding to combine themselves, I think there's definitely at least a story there. Canton Everett Delware III to me felt like a potential Brigadier type figure that weirdly was never used again, so...actually he'd be better just for 11's eventual audios.
I'd like some stories about the Papal Mainframe, real interesting concept, fleshing out Tasha Lem and doing the Silence arc from their point of view could be interesting.
The Ood also probably have some good stories left to be told.
Not sure if you'd count them as major but the Paternoster gang would work well, could even bring back the great intelligence and whispermen as villains.

Agreed. Even then, I have trouble trying to decide the order of my top three (not that the top spot ever changes, mind you...) because I often find I become increasingly endeared to each Doctor with every story I watch/read/listen to. Ultimately, I just like the character, and every incarnation that would include.

Maybe something with Liz Ten, and her future plans in governing Britain on top of the star whale. I am surprised Big Finish never used the Great Intelligence in any of their audios.

>it's being deployed in a way we like to watch, even if deep down we know it's not really a fair use of power.

Who is the person compiling Shit Trip on the wiki? My entry was miscategorized
>>
>>86919179
Yeah, and one of mine wasn't put up either
>>
>>86919179
So were mine, I just moved them around to the right (or closest enough, one didn't really fit anywhere) spots.
>>
>>86919297
Yeah but I'm worried that even if I fix there it will be tagged wrongly in the final product... I'll fix it regardless though.

An issue if you pay for it i suppose.
>>
>>86921420
Why do people care about this fight though? Who are the two people involved and why do they matter? Why is it hyped up so much?
>>
>>86921609
Mayweather has hometown connections for me.
Also it's unusual for an MMA fighter to box, and at such a high level. MacGregor apparently is a hugely popular MMA fighter.
