right, sure. it's sort of hard to express exactly what i love about that film, because it's something a little intangible, or between the lines, but i can try. basically, Reichardt uses the three-act structure to explore visual storytelling techniques she's applied previously in her career. it progressively emphasizes these techniques over dialogue/clear narrative progression in each act, with the first being driven by exposition and the third featuring very little dialogue at all. there's also the fact that i'm just a huge fan of her aesthetic and tone - the sort of midwest melancholy which permeates everything she's made. i wouldn't expect most people to love it as much as i do.

really, i don't recommend watching it if you haven't seen any of her other films. she's a director who gains a lot from being viewed chronologically, lots of very clear thematic throughlines and ideas present. you can skip River of Grass, though.

I just felt like the characters, plot, and setting weren't explored nearly as much as it was in the manga. I loved the manga's cyberpunk settings and how it went into detail on the different factions and just the overall world building. The movie captured some of those elements but I just felt it lacking on the details (which is somewhat understandable given the length). The characters were also wholly uninteresting in the movie for the most part which made the climax very unsatisfying for me.

Maybe it's dumb of me to compare it so much to the manga but I can't help it since I did read it first.

With Shakespeare adaptations i find that any version with Laurence Olivier or Kenneth Branagh is going to be the best, but not with Othello. Welles is far better than Olivier in this role.

Freaks was a great humanistic film

Black Narcissus fell a bit flat for me, but I can certainly recognize the immense formal skill involved.

I really loved Buffalo '66 and feel that it operates in the same sphere as Taxi Driver, thematically.

I assume you were replying to me ( >>84301136 ). Yeah, I liked how claustrophobic Black Narcissus was. I loved the matte paintings as well. There were also a couple of other stylistic flairs that could only be done in technicolor. But overall, I just don't think it grabbed me very well. I've had the Red Shoes recommended to me many times. One day I will watch it.

Gold Diggers of 1933: Busby Berkeley was a genius. Overall it felt surprisingly modern. One of the best films I've watched all year.

The Last Man on Earth: Not Price's best work. He doesn't have the range I thought he had.

The Petrified Forest: The exchange between Bogart and Howard made the film. I can see why it made Bogie's star.

Portrait of Jenne: Felt like a longer, overly melodramatic episode of the Twilight Zone. The use of canvas filters and tinting later in the film were neat though, as was the brief technicolor shot.

I watched an online rip. I wish I watched it in theaters.

I'm not really good with reviews but I was blown away by the 4 main leads. Apparently they're all first time actors and they put on such a natural performance. And the way the movie goes about portraying the subtle nuances and drama in the intimacy of everyday life was breathtaking. One of the best character drama I've ever seen. 5 hours well spent.

Though after seeing so many Japanese movies, I'm really starting to understand how much of a titan Ozu is in terms of influence on Japanese cinema. Almost every director seems to use some part of his style invariably in their movies.

Definitely first and foremost a joke. However it is based on a couple similarities to Korine's work that I noticed, such as the the lurid peak-behind-the-wall-of-supervision depiction of children's lives that you see in Kids.

The grotty vignette structure reminds me of Gummo as well in so far that the children are mostly passing the time doing not much in between scenes just showing their environment, with the implicit analysis that their behaviour is linked to it.

The actual pseudo-documentary structure recalls Trash Humpers as well, especially tonally as the film continues to get darker and more destructive.

The visual aesthetic of the film recalls all 3 of the above films and more, including Spring Breakers. That is, costumes, lighting, art direction. And like Korine, there's a real sense that they actual found a lot of these settings like that when they got there.

Recommend me some bittersweet movies that will probably make me cry. Nothing too cynical or melancholic preferably. I don't like overtly depressing shit.
