This is the first time since Heaven Sent Moffat has written a good episode. How the hell did he do it?

Moffat stole the idea for his next episode from Star wars the Clone Wars episode ''the deserter'' Literally a farm house attacked by metallic droids.

This reminds me of Heaven Sent/Hell Bent

It's kind of a meme. 42 isn't bad at all, it's just forgettable because the rest of the series is too great. All of his episodes suffered by production fuckups. When he's in charge he'll be able to control things.

>>84265866
Moffat seems keen on bridging some continuity snafus, re: he was probably the only one keen to film scenes of 8 regenerating into hurt, and hurt into 9, but with the Master, it'd be a futile effort. we haven't seen the majority of Master regens, and we don't even really know which regen number Missy even is

you're not likely to get a lot of explanation for why Simm is back next week because the end of time pretty well wrote him out of the series. they might do a meta-tongue-in-cheek nod to refusing to explain why, in fact

ONE good episode doesn't excuse the rest of this season. Moffat has undeniably written a few good episodes but he has written a ton of shit and as the showrunner he has approved some awful scripts. He's a hack that gets lucky every once in a while.
>>
They're still on the spaceship
The reason all the different cibber forms exist is they'll be going through all the different floors of the spaceship, and with each new floor they reach cybermen that are more technologically advanced (and therefore happen to look like the different nuwho cyberman variants)

When?
>>
>>84265892
Hey, if you're gonna get all nitpicky about discrepancies involving how The Master works, can we go in chronological order and start with just how the hell he escaped Planet of Fire's ending?
>>
Saw the Doctor Falls.

The following Happens

The farm and countryside is located in the midship. The people there are descendants of the expedition from the bottom part of the ship to the top, but they never made it to the top.

The Cybermen turn on SImm and Missy for that matter and the two Masters retreat with the Doctor to the middle part of the ship.

Simm and Missy have a massive argument as to whether to help the Doctor or not.

Simm is still full of hatred for the Doctor, but he eventually comes around and helps fight off the Cybermen.

When the Cybermen are defeated Simm changes his mind and tries to shoot the Doctor but Missy jumps in front of the shot gets shot. Simm, before Missy if completely incapacitated she shoots simm back. They both caused each others regeneration. Simm regenerates into Missy and runs away. Missy sacrifices herself by destroying the ship manually.

Doctor has been holding back his own regeneration since Oxygen. But his injuries during the battle of the farmhouse mean he can't hold it back anymore.

Bill and Nardole both die.

He regenerates briefly into Kris Marshall in that snow scene before snapping back. Another Tardis appears alongside him and the first Doctor pops out. Cue Cliffhanger.
>>
>>84266026
Why would the others be more technologically advanced?

If anything the cybermen at the bottom should be the most advanced. Their society would be the "oldest", everything above would be shittier and shittier until you just find regular humans and then eventually that blue guy

Im with you on this one. Its clever to on one level have the govt. being taken over by aliens who are completely unconnected from society and then turn on the news and there's tomy blair, as alien as what Doctor Who just parodied.

On the other hand it's not fucking clever or subtle at all to have that allegory going as the anon claims and have them be represented by lauging sociopathic green men who shoot electricity and fart and wear zipper people suits. Its not an allegory anymore, its a parody that hits you in the face with a hammer and knocks a few teeth out going "see?!? They're not like us!"

Yeah, we fuckin get it: the govt in power has too much power(lightning) isn't like us(aliens) wants us to believe they are(people suits) and thinks theyre all so great(laughing at their own farts). That's not a subtle allegory. And if it feels like I'm repeating myself don't worry, im just making a subtle allegory as to what it takes to pass as clever in RTD era writing.

It's still the premise of the episode even if the real life event wasn't faked. I bet you think Animal Farm is a bad allegory because animals can't really talk and Soviet Russia was bigger than one farm.

How so? I mean, their central theme is inherent in humanity, it plays off our own fears.

I mean, 90 yesrs olds need a dozen tablets an hour, iron lungs, pacemakers, and god knows what else to keep them alive, it's like that, a society that didn't want to die, and so sought to protect iself through "evolution", just like humaity in real life.

Stop watching trailers if you don't want anything spoiled. It's why I personally avoid them. My honest rating of series 10

1.The Pilot: 8/10 - Great and comfy
2.Smile: 6.5/10 - good start, shite ending
3.Thin Ice: 6/10 - Nice visuals too preachy.
4. Knock Knock: 6/10, nothing remarkable.
5. Oxygen: 7/10 - Good but also too preachy
6. Extremis: 7/10 - Pretty good.
7. PYATOTW: 6/10: - Bad
8. LOTL: - 5/10, wasted villains and bad ending.

11. World Enough and Time: 8.5, Great

My bet is on The Doctor giving his regeneration energy to Bill. Thus triggering her dormant Time Lord dna, watch or what ever mcguffin has made her human.
This then causes Missy to forcibly transfer some of Simm's life energy into the Doctor to save him.
Causing electric hunger Simm, who promptly gets the fuck out of there.
Bill then regenerates into Kris Marshall and the Doctor regenerates into a woman.

Broadchurch is good, but I still worry much more about what 42 and his other episodes suggest. If you gave me an opportunity to write an episode of Doctor Who – i.e., here's the show, here's the Doctor, you gotta fill 45 minutes, and this might be the only chance you ever get to do this – the sorts of things I'd come up with aren't anywhere near what we've gotten from Chibnall. For what it's worth, I'd probably write a 'reskin' of Remembrance of the Daleks to properly write the New Paradigm out of the series, but what I mean is moreso in terms of tone, pacing, mood, etc. nothing he's put out has engaged me, and he's had multiple opportunities to write episodes and I've found them all to fall flat. The impression I have is that Chibnall is a union writer with tenure – he's nothing to do now that Broadchurch is over, so he pretty much asked for Who just to keep getting a salary. I don't expect him to stay very long, I don't expect him to contribute much to the overall mythos of the series, and it's essentially marking time until another series he's more interested in writing for gets picked up.

Simm could have been referring to the beginning of the cybermen on tht ship, who had all the mondas parts but left mondas before the cybermen were made. I mean, i hate to point it out but we already have 2 genesis of the cybermen stories and both of them work in the same continuity. Part of the reason this story is so good is that it borrows the good ideas from spare parts instead of the shitty ones like age of steel did.

I like your ratings, for the most part.

The Pilot – 6 – decent season open. compares favourably to most openers deep
Smile – 5 – overrated. you will never rewatch this episode because the narrative is boring af and Bill just isn't a good companion
Thin Ice – 0 – boring
Knock Knock – 4 – a good episode with a great guest actor, let down by the awkwardness of its ending. the wooden mother is right out of the worst of RTD.
Oxygen – 4 – agreed
Extremis – 8.8 – there's too many clever and interesting things going on here to shit on it. moffat's been a shaky show-runner the last few years but don't forget he's the dude who some fantastic episodes whether he was show-runner or not, and extremis is easily one of them. it's as good as you'll ever fucking get with doctor who, just in line behind blink and heaven sent
Pyramid at the End of the World – 4 – total letdown after extremis' set up. the plant lab subplot was a ridiculous choice
Lie of the Land – 6 – the fake regen scene was pretty good. bad episode – it seemed like capaldi tried to act his heart out to save a shit episode, and it mostly works. i can easily also see it being where he decides to throw in the towel on the series
The Empress of Mars – 7 – same opinion. comfy af. i wish gatiss had always written episodes like this
The Eaters of Light – 6 – slow but comfy. really, really weird. the fact it was written by the last writer of the old series makes sense, because it feels like a bizarre 7th Doctor story
World Enough and Time – 6 – the pacing here is too slow for what it is. the "pain" scene goes on for like 5 minutes for no clear reason, and you don't get to see any clever execution of the cool ideas here. i'm sick of setup episodes under moffat because they never deliver on what they promise. Dark Water gave way to schlock and so will this ep

Had we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
We would sit down and think which way
To walk and pass our long love's day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side
Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow;
A hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, Lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.

But at my back I always hear
Time's wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found,
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust:
The grave's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.

Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapped power.
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

He was taking pictures of bill's mum to give to bill as a christmas gift. This was pretty blatantly implied in The Pilot and then outright stated by 12 in Lie of the Land

Can the Doctor can just start wasting some fools?

>>84267823
So it's a bootstrap paradox?
>>
>>84267718
oh, obviously bill was more of a minority pandering thing than anythinig else. it just sort of surprised me that they'd actually let affirmative action potentially fuck their cash cow that hard – i.e. the same way the BBC don't have the bad business sense to actually cast a female Doctor, because outside of the internet, SJWs don't fucking matter, it's bizarre they'd cast an unattractive companion and risk just as much damage

Head cannon, lads:

The Matron gave the patients strict instructions to keep everyone away from the window (to stop them jumping out and killing themselves), so ordered them all to keep everyone away from it, that's why everytime she went near it/opened it they all turned to face her/got up to attack her.

Because you'd give away that the Cybermen were in it.

Which BBC Marketing did anyway, imagine how much better it would have been if we didn't know that the Cybermen it The Master was going to be in it.
>>
Wait, i'm confused. Is the Kris Marshal rumor true or is it kind of like the Bradley rumor and everyone is just getting their hopes up again? Or down, whatever.
>>
>>84267854
No, bootstrap paradoxes deal with ontology.

Yeah, duh. No one is allowed to leave the hospital.

>>
I was honestly like, 'how the fuck is Bill walking around outside the hospital when she was told she could never leave or she'd die' and literally the second after she started to collapse.
>>
>>84267917
Why do they wear the mask?
>>
>>84268030
Yeah, but the point is they all wanted to kill themselves, so they were essentially all each other's suicide watch.

Marshall is looking likely because of how quiet he's been, he was favourite, had dozens of articles, was trending on twitter yet there's been no denial, Rosehall, Mylan, Phoebe Waller Bridge and Atwell have all denied it.

Who knows, could turn out to be someone else.

Bradley is pretty much confirmed at this point, by the man himself:
>>84267508
>>
>>84268137
AND WHY ARE YOU WEARING THAT SKI MASK?

BECAUSE

YOU'RE

NOT

SKIING
>>
>>84268148
If they all wanted to kill themselves, they would be very poor suicide watches.
>>
>>84267899

Not as good as the original. This song is shit.
>>
Anyone else really like Razor? seems like that crazy but nice eastern european guy who lives next door to you.
>>
So how do the Cybermen get to Mondas, convert everyone and get ready for The Tenth Planet?
>>
>>84268004
>>84268186

Also The Mirror, where the Marshall rumour started, said we'd first see him during the series and not the Christmas special, with the regeneration it's looking likely we'll see whoever it is next week.
>>
What is it about these more recent episodes that feel so... safe and clean? Like, by all rights the imagery and themes in this episode should be unsettling to say the least. Lots of body horror and existential horror elements abound. But something about it just doesn't affect me at all. It just feels bland/safe/boring for some reason. Does anyone have a guess as to what the reason is for this?

It's not like I'm above being unsettled by a kids show, either, there have been plenty of unsettling Doctor Who episodes for me. So it's just weird.
>>
>>84268238
How indeed, it's not like they're sitting in a spaceship.
>>
>>84268257
It'll be in the Christmas special; and they're gonna heavily spoil (a la Bradley rumors) the plot so people will keep talking about the show until December.
>>
>>84265948
Clara is still technically dead, just they found a magic way of prolonging it for fanfiction. People only concentrate on the fact The Doc bent the rules to try and preserve her though
>>
The Doctor lands in Antarctica, meets the first Doctor, they both regenerate. It's like poetry.
>>
Which gender is exposition and which is comic relief?
>>
>>84268286
Because it's a kids show.
>>
>>84268286
It's because Capaldi is phoning his lines in. He just doesn't care anymore.

Bill/women are exposition. Nardole/men are comic relief. Missy was being double-meta.

Can Moffat keep coming back to write episode 11?
>>
>>84268806
it was exciting at the time. i was excited that all the shit the Doctor usually shakes off by the end of the episode would continue to carry through to more episodes, i.e. that Capaldi's doctor would be blind for the rest of the season and maybe worse, and his regen would be due to fatigue/continuing damage. it was interesting
>>
>>84268843
so long as he can't write the finale, ever, ever again
>>
"i Can't...see...antyhtiegnnk'
Please.
>>
>>84268806
It was interesting in Extremis and Pyramid.
>>
>>84268852
The dumb thing about it was that he could've just fixed it with regeneration energy; but no, he was somehow saving it up to do a stupid fake out to Bill later.
>>
>>84268852
>Capaldi's doctor would be blind for the rest of the season
It would have gotten pretty boring by the 5th episode or so.
>>
Just started watching the last episode. Why is the doctor regenerating? Is it a preview or is it from the episode 10?
>>

>>84268700
Isn't it, though? I mean, I get that love being the solution is lame and trite, but.. if the crux of the Cybermen is their lack of emotion, then wouldn't one of the strongest human emotions be the best way to stop them?

Or would you rather Nardole pull a gold nugget out of his coat pocket and smear it all over Bill's new metal tits?
>>
>>84268916

Preview
>>
>>84268916
It's a flash forward. The scene was filmed just a week or two ago, as part of the christmas special shooting. It explains why the regeneration effect looked so cheap and rushed, at least.
>>
>>84268916
..Why are you asking? Why wouldn't you just watch it, then come and join the discussion? It's a part of the episode, if that's what you're asking. You're not watching the wrong thing.
>>
>>84268890
I want to know who thought that was a good idea.

>>
>>84268669
>They never followed up on Twelve taking the photos of Bill's mom, did they?
In The Lie of the Land it helped Bill defeat the Monks by thinking about the mum she never actually knew.
>>
>>84268950
So if they do reverse the cyber programming, what will become of Bill?
She is literally a massive cyborg monster. There is no way she is going back to making chips.
>>
>>84269016
But we still don't know why he went back and took the photos, right? I don't even remember her ever asking him about it, and she definitely noticed him in the mirror in that one photo.
>>
>>84269060
Either the Doctor's gonna reverse time so none of it ever happened or she's just gonna die.
When they zoomed in on the face mask, the flesh around her eye was intact. Maybe if you just take it off, the person underneath still LOOKS normal?
>>
Holy fuck Master, why do you keep torturing the black ones?
>Martha
>Danny
>Bill
>>
>>84269108
That was just a stylistic decision to let us know it was really Bill in there; I doubt she still looks like that.
>>
>>84269073
..She brought it up, man. She said she didn't have photos and that she didn't know what she looked like when she was talking about how she just has a made up version of her mom that she talks to. So, he hid them in her attic as a Christmas gift.

Why don't you pay attention?
>>
>>84269073
He took the photos as a christmas gift for bill because he wanted to be nice and bill mentioned that she didn't have any pictures of her mum
how the fuck didn't you pick up on this, 12 even explains it explicitly in Lie of the Land - "I thought I was just being nice but it turns out taking those pictures saved the world", some shit like that
