Series 10 has been an interesting study in what happens when you take the companion position for granted.

No matter how much you like Doctor Who, you have to admit the bad outweighs the good – i.e. the majority of episodes are not good. You're basically on this ride hoping that the good is good enough to outweigh the bad.

Most griping is sidestepped because the Doctor can usually entertain you enough through the lows, and also the companion is either interesting or hot as fuck for you to think they're interesting.

Someone in the last thread said Clara was the focus of series 7/8/9 because she was a bombshell and they're goddamn right. Smith is a good Doctor, and Capaldi is a good Doctor, but that alone can't always help you against the nature of a BBC family show. It helps -immensely- to have someone easy on the eyes as his chipper companion/damsel in distress (as the situation calls for), otherwise you just hold your breath for a good episode despite all the elements working against one coming about, and the rest of the episodes don't really have a chance of being comfy because there's not enough good shit going on.

Bill is a good character regardless of her appearance
>>
I wish the latest episode went more into Bill's life in the hospital. Did she make any new friends? Keep a diary? Talk to her dead mom like a weirdo? Do anything else but watch a Doctor Who episode at 0.000002 frames per second?
>>
>>84269452

So you're saying that the best way to improve DW would be to play a porn video at the same time as the episode?
>>

Saw on the Planet Mondas forum the Christmas special is supposed to involve Cybermen and pre-Karn Morbius. That forum usually just regurgitates stuff from here and GB, so does anyone have any other news on that from there?

I sincerely doubt the christmas special is going to involve cybermen unless moff pulls a fast one and does a three parter, keeping us on a cliffhanger for half a year

It makes sense, desu. Next week might have the Doctor only 'managing' the Cybermen problem without completely 'solving' it, because he's too busy with the two Masters. As it stands, if Bill is the first Cyberman, you need an explanation as how to Cybermen get back from that ship to Mondas – escape shuttle, or whatever. The Doctor could have to go to Mondas for Christmas.

81.

I heard he's putting out (or maybe it's already out?) an autobiography this year.

I didn't know until recently that he appeared in an episode of Moffat's own "Press Gang" so that's pretty cool and I really ought to finally watch that show actually.
>>
>>84269955
So Doctor becomes the Valeyard, Missy has to be good to save him because he's smart enough to do all the things (s)he couldn't through the years and potentially take over the universe?
Because I have to admit, I might watch that.

I really REALLY need William Russell & her to appear on the show again before Peter Capaldi leaves. I think if those characters are to appear on televised Doctor Who again/NuWho it should be with The Doctor played by the uberfan who's old enough that he watched them when they were first on when he was a kid.
>>
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday would've been better as a pure Cybermen invasion story. Instead the Daleks show up and ruin it because of the "they need to appear every series" clause.
>>
>have the technology to replace most of the body with advanced machinery
>don't have the ability to prevent the subject from feeling pain from it
I get that it's to make the process seem more horrific, but it makes little sense.
Why would it hurt anyway? 90% of the body is gone after the conversion, it's almost all machinery from that point.
>>
>>84270623
Relax, Moffat. We liked it.
>>
>>84270473
The Doctor and the Master are supposed to be about equal in intelligence, though. The Doctor just always wins because he's the protagonist.

I still feel that Listen or Heaven Sent hold that title (although Hell Bent ruined it a little).
I'm almost convinced Moffat will Moffuck the second part to this one, too. It's just his thing that he does.
>>
>>84270755
It's why I'm not getting myself hyped for the second part. I've been burnt too many times.

The Doctor Falls will probably be massively disappointing, but I'll be happy if it isn't.
>>
>>84270755
listen is overrated trash
>>
>>84270516
Just cleaning up his messes.
But, no, make it better. He's not calling himself the Doctor, after all, he's the Valeyard. So, being manipulative at first, she starts calling herself Doctor. Eventually she fits the role more and more. Then they both regenerate and we can have a lovely mix-up over who is Who.
>>
I'm betting Bill's conversion will be undone somehow. There's no way they'll leave a companion in such a fucked up situation. Sure, many companions leave in bittersweet ways but this is just messed up.
But I hope Moffat has the balls to actually leave her this way, it actually makes the Cybermen more horrifying now we've seen a regular turned into one
>>
>>84270755
I prefer heaven sent because the tone was spot on
World Enough had some issues where it had all these body horror concepts but instead of going all out and making a full dark episode out of it, it was kind of watered down by the music and the other things going on
>>
>>84270895
If it's undone, there's really no reason for The Doctor to be resisting his regeneration, there has to be stakes and a reason for not wanting to carry on
>>
>>84270895
Yeah, the end scene stresses the horror so much and also kind of puts the blame on the Doctor with the "I waited for you" line. I doubt he'll let it permanent or let her die, but it would be nice.

>Then they both regenerate and we can have a lovely mix-up over who is Who.

Hello Missy. I'm the Master. And I'm very worried about my future.
>>
It's interesting that Missy doesn't recall being there in the past. Mind-fuckery forthcoming for the Master, or one of those multi-Doctor events where blah blah blah time erases their memories? Because we do have one example of the Doctor encountering himself and recalling it, so we know that can happen, the brief but charming bit with 10 and 5 in Time Crash where 10 is able to correct things because he remembers watching himself do it when he was 5.
So, long con, wibbly wobbly, or mindfuck?
>>
At least if Bill gets deconverted her departure will probably be a Victoria/Tegan-esque "I just can't take this shit anymore" scene, which is a pretty good way to do companion departures.

This was his best episode, I thought. Definitely better than Last of the Time Lords trilogy and The End of Time.
>>
>>84271079
basically what's been established, when you compare every multi-Doctor story, i.e. any of The Three Doctors, Five Doctors, Two Doctors, Time Crash, Day of the Doctor, etc. is that after the fact, the earlier incarnations of the Time Lord will forget the interaction when it ends and only the most recent regeneration will remember any of it.

With respect to what happens during, there's no consistency, and it hasn't been outright stated but reasonable headcanon is that these situations are so anomalous that there's no rhyme or reason as to who remembers what, why, or how. (In reality, whether Missy does or doesn't remember the events as they occur next week will just be up to Moffat w/r/t narrative convenience.)
>>
>>84271078
I'm sure this is exactly the way Delgado and Ainley would have felt if they had been able to peer into the future and see his episodes under RTD lol
>>
>>84271204
Sound of the Drums was a fantastic set-up episode, let down by how bizarre its follow-up was.

World Enough and Time is a fantastic set-up episode, likely to be let down by how shit its follow-up will be.
>>
Why was the Master in disguise? He didn't know the Doctor was coming.

If Bill Stays dead hopefully, please Moffat will this be the most horrific way a companion has gone out?
>>
>>84271079
I think Matt Smith in Day of the Doctor said "I remember this. Sort of remember". Also Tennant said he will forget this. So I guess when they meet future self out of stream their memories will get wobbly.
>>
>>84271306

It's possible that he was dressed up as someone he killed and replaced.
>>
>>84271306
Disguises are rather necessary when you happen to be someones former prime minister.
>>
>>84271306
He has to hide because his face is too recognizable. He did mention he was Prime Minister so the humans of that era will be familiar with him.

Forgetting about River, Amy and Rory this soon.
>>
>>84271079
If the time lines are out of sync then retention for any temporally vulnerable parties (i.e. past incarnations) won't be possible. Isn't this an established temporal law in the Whoniverse? Surely it's been mentioned more than once since that rule is ingrained in my head. Someone look it up for me?

>>

>>
>>84271400

>>
Anyone else predict that guy would be the master from the first time he appeared on screen?
Also why would the master wait YEARS with bill just for all this shit, why were they waiting so long to convert her?
>>
>>84271079
Eh, it's all fucked. The general rule's whenever there are multiple versions of the same character present, the earlier versions don't remember things. It's not consistent, though. For once, Missy should remember being on the ship before the Doctor arrived. If all the memories of the events are gone, then 11 shouldn't have remembered saving Gallifrey since 12 was involved.
>>
>>84271518
Did you seriously watch without spoilers. Also,
>why were they waiting so long to convert her?

Calling it right now Missy or Clara saves Bill. Actually, a combination would make the most sense. Missy steals/"borrows" that one Time Lord technology from Hell Bent, snatches Bill and somehow knowing where Clara is drops her off with Clara because "Oh you two living dead girls have quite a lot in common" or hopefully better dialogue than that but, you know. ha!

Even if Moffat was naive enough to think he could get away with actually killing off the show's first gay/lesbian companion the BBC definitely are not and would not let him get away with it. So yeah, let that "Bill is staying dead/converted" ship sail off now because, that's not going to happen and her death/conversion is unhappening one way or another.

They should have made more effort with Simm's disguise makeup; I recognised him immediately. What with that, the trailer giving it away that he was in the episode, and that it was the cybermen, there wasn't anything left to build any suspense whatsoever. what a waste. someone ought to be slapped for those decisions.

Season 10 has been an interesting study in what happens when you let shitty Social Justice Warriors hijack script writing.

Every single hot sociopolitical topic has been touched on now, in a hamfisted way: racial representation in history, sexuality, feminism, transgender issues, percieved flaws in capitalism.

I liked the pilot, but the rest of this season has been pretty shit, due to their preoccupation with injecting left-wing propaganda rather than writing good stories about travelling through time and space.

I just finished it and holy fuck it was good. On the one hand, it's a pity I had basically all of it spoiled, but it did make Razor's scenes even more enjoyable knowing it was Simm. Razor is also the funniest character Moffat's ever written.

It was so good that I can't even be mad about the canon fuckery or Bill being converted (although that's partly because I'm sure they'll bring her back)

Gee but do I know. Time lords can basically break the laws of time and bring back people from the dead now.

Even universes with actual magic do not go this far
>>
>>84273415
Simm is 'dead' between Last of the Time Lords and End of Time. There's some wiggle room between Utopia and Sound of the Drums it could've been set between, but since Simm refers to being PM in past tense, it's necessarily after Sound of the Drums, and therefore after LotTL, and therefore after EoT. (It can't occur during End of Time because Simm's Master was 'running out of juice', his body was failing, and wouldn't have had time to jet off to execute this.)

It can *only* happen after End of Time.
>>
>>84273511
Yeah, it was a bit weird of BBC to give away both Simm and the cybermen in trailers when the episode itself is written in such a way that it's meant to be a surprise. The episode is enjoyable anyway though.

If I had stayed away from /who/ I don't think I would've figured out that Razor was Simm (Ainley's disguises used to genuinely deceive me) but people have been saying that it's Simm in disguise for ages. And once already had that idea in my head, it was easy to spot his mannerisms.

Really looking forward to next episode. Even if it's a disaster, a full Simm episode is very welcome. What's interesting about the cliffhanger now that I think about it is that it doesn't really set up a plot exactly. It sets up Bill being converted and Simm being back, but anything could really happen.
>>

But this is true. Moffat and RTD always backed out of actually killing a companion.
>Jack dies. Gets resurrected.
>Amy and Rory lived out their whole lives, so they are as 'dead' as anybody else would be in a show about time travel
>Clara died, but really she became an immortal pseudo-time lord.
River is the only one who definitively died, but then she got to spend 50 years living with the Doctor and then some more time in a digital afterlife. I really hope that they stick with Bill's death because it would carry some serious emotional weight.

I was leaning very strongly towards it being Simm, but his voice reminded me a lot of that weird prisoner warning about how about "the Doctor has a secret, you know" at the start of Name of the Doctor (the Whispermen ep), and I didn't think it was impossible for Razor to be a red herring.

Once it became obvious during the conversation with Missy he was about to give himself away was the only point I was actually 100% sure, and it didn't at all take away from enjoying the surprise for what it was.

>>84273558
Someone posted in an earlier thread something pretty plausible;

- each 'floor' of the space ship is more or less faster in time. the further up, the less advanced the Cyberman model; lower floors will have more and more advanced models going all the way to the Nightmare In Silver models so they have an excuse to be in the episode
- Missy and the Master argue about helping the Doctor and the Master initially refuses but gives up
- they go along with him after arguing about it but Simm ultimately betrays the Doctor
- Missy shoots Simm, he regenerates into her. Missy sacrifices herself to save the Doctor and seems to die in a huge explosion
- Nardole also dies at some point
- Explosion damages Capaldi too, kicking off the regen

I think I'm too much of a Simmboy to not notice. Once I already knew to look for the clues I couldn't help but see them. Like the way he walked at times, there was a moment where he was saying words very rapidly which sounded like when he starts talking about hot greasy fat food in EoT, and even something as subtle as how he narrows his eyes.

He did a great job with the character though. I don't usually find Moffat's jokes funny but all of his Razor lines were solid, and I think that's partly because of Simm's delivery.

So glad he got his wish of being written by Moffat.

And I'm so glad I can post this image with the filename I gave it in 2014 and have it no longer make any sense at all.

Why did Erica need to hold the door open at all? She didn't go back in to get anything after that. Even if she needed to, why couldn’t she have just opened the door by the handle? It’s not like that’s a difficult task in any capacity

Why did they make a big deal out of the doctor supporting an air strike as if it was an immoral mistake, only for it to never come up again and lead to nothing?

Why did the monks teleport into the fighter jet when they were already using a glowy light beam to control and land it?

Why did they say "Not a single living thing” regarding the future visions when that vision included a tree?

Why was the doctor begging "no please stop don't do this" when the UN guy tried to consent, when the doctor outranks him? He had the right and authority to order him to step down.

The doctor just released every government secret on google and there was no mass panic among civilians? And it will never be addressed again?

Why did the doomsday clock start counting backwards when the doctor set up the bomb? If the monks knew about the bomb, considered it to be a bad thing that was ruining their plan, and they have the ability to manipulate reality (proven by them fixing the security cameras and the doctor's eyes), why didn't they just stop the bomb?

The doctor has literally used the sonic sunglasses to livestream camera footage before - he did it in Under the Lake. Why didn't he do it here? He was literally using the glasses to call bill at that exact moment already, there was absolutely zero reason why he couldn’t have done it. If they had just broken the sonic sunglasses so he was truly vulnerable and just had him call bill some other way there wouldn’t have been this problem.

Bill's consent was out of fear of a world without the doctor, and love for the doctor. The monks wanted love for the monks. Why was this valid consent to them?

And that's ignoring everything to do with the biolab which has a shitton of issues itself

Okay they might not act logically, but story wise it kind of flows on from Extremis in a better way than Lie; and wasn't the most disappointing episode of the series so far

Had we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
We would sit down and think which way
To walk and pass our long love's day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side
Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow;
A hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, Lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.

But at my back I always hear
Time's wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found,
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust:
The grave's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.

Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapped power.
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

When something hits the even horizon of a black hole, no one's really sure what happens exactly, but a lot of scientists have some clever theories that I have no fuckin chance understanding.

It's basically the point of no return, and weird shit happens. Apparently in the Whoniverse, if you reach the even horizon you blow up in a little blue puff

In the impossible planet/satan pit the doctor states that a planet orbiting a black hole is "impossible". Plenty of planets orbit black holes lmao.

This black hole was depicted a bit more realistically, but if time dilation was happening at that rate, I can't imagine the spaceship not being completely ripped to shreds by gravitational forces.

It's Doctor Who, it's probably stupid to even try to make it seem consistent

Quality isn't a game where you add up the number of plot holes and whichever one has more is the worst episode, anon. Pyramid didn't have anything even remotely as bad as "The Doctor actively supports a fascist regime and the death of innocent people for 6 months so that he can trick his friend into shooting him for no reason" no matter how many paragraphs you write about it.

I actually think some of the dialogue when Bill confronts the Doctor thinking he's evil is pretty great. Peter and Pearl make the scene work too. And the dystopian design was wonderful...

I have literally nothing to say about pyramid though it's so... bland. I actually prefer Lie because it actually tries to do... something
