apparently plays Roger Delgado's Master next week, along the same lines someone is rumoured to play the First Doctor either of next week or in the series finale

Moffat's fucking around with the regenerations, and is trying to make a favourable comparison to the implication the Doctor caused the Daleks in Genesis with the idea here that he is somehow responsible for the genesis of the Cybermen

I've stopped getting my hopes up for this series but it seems like it's sort of 'hit' Moffat he's not going to be able to write for the TV series he always wanted to write for anymore, and is throwing everything at it. He's not worried about consequence, either, because series 11 is probably going to be a hard reboot

>>84262688
Both the Masters did a lot of comedy.
>>
>>84262731
No, I like the entire spectrum of whites, from brunette, to red, to blond. You know, whites are the only race (unless you count some rare natives and even then they don't have red) to have multiple hair colours.
>>
>there might be antiradiation gloves... drugs...

wow, was it unintentional?

If 11 was the last in that first cycle, why did he start regenerating when he was shot at Lake Silencio?

>Doctor Who hasn't been fun since Series 5 Episode 10.
The Pandorica Opens, The Doctor's Wife, The Snowmen, Nightmare In Silver, were all pretty fun episodes.

I also liked the episode with the Ganger Doctor, but ymmv on that one.
>>
>>84262737
>the implication the Doctor caused the Daleks in Genesis
But he didn't, except in the sense that he failed to stop them. Davros's plans were set to go off without a hitch if the Doctor hadn't interfered.
>>
>>84262781
Because that wasn't 11, that was the Tesselecta giving off a fancy light show.
>>
>>84262688

There's been plenty of fun episodes, Robot of Sherwood was really fun, actually laughed out loud during the prison scene.
>>
>>84262781

>>
>>84262781

But not an ass between them.
>>

Moffat just fucking die.
>>
>>84262794
he's not solely responsible, obviously; rather, he played a role in their creation and is, in some vague sense, 'responsible' for what they ultimately became

RTD/someone in the BBC production crew were really keen on the idea and lot of books/etc. during his era pointed to Genesis a lot as 'the first act of the Time War' and that the Time Lords, c/o the Doctor, ultimately brought it upon themselves
>>
>>84262798
but what was the point? Were none of the other characters aware he was the last regeneration?

that's how I'm feeling so far and it might even be why they were kept apart during this episode. we'll see how it goes next week but as much as I love Simm's Master, his characterisation can't really "survive" outside of an RTD-helmed series in terms of mood/etc.

I imagine next week he's pretty much going to play a character closer to OldWho's Master than the new series

>>84262411
ok i'm only starting up today's episode up now, so i'm not gonna scroll down and spoil [the details/technicalities of] today's episode......

BUT

holy fucking shit I HATE YOU STEVEN MOFFAT!!!!! SERIOUSLY GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY DR WHO AND NEVER COME BACK YOU GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKING NEPOTISM-ENABLED SOULLESS HACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and the reason i say that is because earlier today [b4 today's ep] i had noted that we were technically in a rare period of time where moffucked dr who didn't have a [legit/storyline] carrot being dangled in front of us [to compel us to watch] --- you know, there was no HOW'S THE DOCTOR GONNA ACCEPT 100% CERTAIN FATAL DEATH @ LAKE SILENCIO?! WHY DOES PONDSCUM SEE THAT OLD EYEPATCH LADY POPPING UP? WHERE'S MELODY POND? HOW'S THE DOCTOR GOING TO ESCAPE 100% CERTAIN FATAL DEATH AT TRENZALORE?!! WHO IS CLARA OSWALD [PROTIP: not susan or the rani] and uhhhhhhhh for capaldi i guess there's the aborted "why did the doctor choose capaldi's face?" bit from S8 and then, of course, WHO IS 'ME' [maisie williams]?!?! from season 9.

yeah, with the vault-wad being shot early it wass like "ok, outside of meta stuff where we all know that capaldi is leaving and therefore we've got a regeneration coming, man, moffat literally doesnt have some big carrot-dangling "mystery" in front of us for a couple'a episodes! wow, this is rare...."

....SO OF COURSE THE DUMBSHIT STARTS OFF THE 2 PART SEASON-ENDING STORY WITH A REGEN TEASE!!!!! i mean seriously what in the actual fuck!? does he think he's gonna make that many more people trudge through the next 45/90 mins of bullshit just to see how the doctor ended up getting to regeneration mode? [i mean, you're only allowed 1 regen fakeout per season, right?] seriously, your audience is what it is so can you at least treat us with a little dignity?

*buzzer* nope, gotta wow the 5 year olds in the room by starting up a regen tease stinger bullshit IMMEDIATELY. seriously, fuck off and die moffat!

>>
>>84263463
and yes, i know: TLDR / turbo-autist / off-my-meds / nobody cares / my atypical verbiage-dense syntax doesn't seamlessly integrate into the usual passing discourse of /who/ ---- i know, you know, ergo we know. thank you and have a nice evening/morning/day/ whatever wherever you are!

p.s. FUCK MOFFAT! seriously, the guy has us pining for chris fucking chibnall as showrunner--- that's how bad things have gotten in thie epoch of moffuckery! >>
>>84263555
hey 12 coke cat, i don't frequent /who/ or anything and reading gallifreybase makes me contemplate the legit upsides of going for the golden ipod, so i'm not 100% up to speed on the technicalites of capaldi-era-who ergo i'm gonna guess that you're prolly more knowledgeable than me about the last few years, so [drum roll]

did moffat ever follow through on that whole "why did the doctor choose capaldi's face?" bit that he was teasing in at least the first few episodes of S8? or did it end up being some bullshit where he got notes from the beeb saying that the early capaldi era was "too dark" or something and end up scrapping the whole "why did i choose this face?" bit to just focus on giving us the adventures of the hippest grandpa in the universe?

seriously, i'm pretty sure moffat dropped the whole "why this face?" deal cuz it seemed to be pretty foreboding, like it was hearkening some revelation about the doctor's dark side (you know, the one that colin baker wanted to explore and also i think capaldi talked about doing that too b4 S8 but he probably got some notes from the beeb about how kids aint gonna wanna buy lunchboxes with a twisted old grandpa wrought with self-loathing on them....or something =)

>TLDR = did moffat ever address the whole "why this face?" thing that the doctor was carrying on about early in S8?

Cheers,

Jon Blum

>no, it's an "anon watched series 9 every week as it aired but honestly retains very little practical offhand memory of it"

IIRC wasn't there the episode where the TWEEEEEEST was that the little kid afrid in his bed was the doctor? there was a hustle episode in a space bank? and maisie williams can't die in much the same way parker lewis can't lose cuz the doctor gave her some timelord something to get around death, so she got bored and malevolent for awhile but then started running a refugee camp hidden in london? clara sacrificed herself to save banksy from the people in the walls episode?

also wasn't there a timelord memory/confession cube or something? maybe that was the carrot? it led to heaven sent / hell bent where there was a good episode about the doctor's inner-self-demons and all that, leading to the timelords come back, i wanna say rassilon was a black chick? and in the end gallifrey is technically back but [they'll explain later] and to avoid death [and be available for any much-needed future appearances] clara's in her own tardis living a whole wonderful life in the final second/s before her death by the raven?

yeah i watched this shit as it happened.... S9 was better than s8, but you know... it's still moffucked who, so i often forget a lot of stuff that i used to love to remember all these details about.

>What is a Mondas (I've never kept up with the old Who)

To be fair, this seems to me like the most prominent time in the new series where the 'twist' relies way too much on familiarity with the old series.

For shit like Time Lords, they'd be hyped up by Tennant's Doctor moaning about them for so long that even if you hadn't watched, e.g., the Deadly Assassin, their appearance was still an "oh shit" moment.

Any other time they've robbed the old series in a sort of 'fanservice-y' way they did enough set-up in advance/in terms of how it's used, that it's been able to stand on its own.

Cybermen were scary because they were crazy robots, Daleks were scary because they were named as the instigators of the Time War and then appeared in a huge fucking space army, etc.

The 'Mondasian' qualifier isn't a scary plot twist if you never watched The Tenth Planet. Coincidentally, I think the next closest "the impact falls flat if you didn't watch the old series" in New Who is when John Simm first appeared.
>>
>>84264109

She's as developed as she needs to be. I'm glad she's not the focal point like so many other NuWho companions have been. She's just along for the ride with the Doctor on his adventures. Her motivations are clear enough and her interactions with the Doctor are consistent and do paint a picture of her character. The only difference is she isn't the center of everything like Rose or Amy or Clara, and that's a good thing.

as much as I'd like to agree, because I love Capaldi as an actor and I enjoy his Doctor, S8 and S9 were not great.

Doctor Who is a B-Rank series with good episodes essentially 'in spite of itself', so most seasons are overall pretty bad. Matt Smith had the best share of good episodes; i.e., where it's not a painful slog to rewatch.

Capaldi has had very few episodes where the episode is actually worth a revisit.

I can't even imagine what you mean by "really cool scenes," because you seem like a brain damaged mongoloid, but if you stop and reflect you'll see how the memorable Simm moments - him dancing to Scissor Sisters, him shooting lightning at Rassilon - were really, really fucking silly, which, in case you have not realised, my retarded friend, is Doctor Who. Unlike Moffat, RTD actually remembered that kids watched the show and used the levity of the farting to offset the fact that these aliens are fucking removing the innards of human beings and then wearing their skin as costumes, complete with scenes of them removing their skin-costumes to reveal their grotesque alien nature. It's a fucking terrifying idea and you need some levity to at least try to lighten the kids' nightmares afterward. Plus, the farting was explained and also used as a device to figure out how to stop the Slitheen (the smell was like bad breath, indicating calcium decay, revealing a weakness to certain chemicals).

Plus, you say "most of the eps were trash" and literally the only problem you can come up with was the farting aliens, implying that the episodes themselves were just fine except for one aspect. Not to mention that the farting only actually came up in the first appearance and not at all in the second appearance.

Hating on S1 is such a retarded meme.

Nightmare could've been a really bad episode, i.e. overly drawn out and left the appearance of the Cyberman as a last-minute climax and had them easily disposed of.

Instead we get a really good episode where pretty early on you have them set up as the antagonists, a nifty redux of The Tomb of the Cybermen, Matt Smith getting to play his own antagonist via some clever writing, and the episode features Clara in one of the few episodes where she gets to be a solid companion in a good companion, vs. 'the Impossible Girl' slash a companion in an overclimactic episode slash gets killed by a bird.

I think I get why people don't like it – the Cybermen become these speedy, ruthless, killing machines, so that there might be a bit of upset c/o why didn't they choose some other monster of the week vs. mucking up their continuity, but there's just far too much good stuff going on in the episode for me to give a shit.

"Dalek" is also still among the best episodes of NuWho, if not of all time. It especially hits hard if you've never seen Doctor Who prior. The first 5 episodes show this optimistic, upbeat Doctor who never loses his cool and solves problems with wit and charm. Then you get to episode 6 and this happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIjUSzpYcuA

Eccleston's run was my introduction to Doctor Who and I didn't even know what a Dalek was. That fucking scene gave me goosebumps back in 2005 and still does today. It's so fucking good. Not to mention "kill yourself" and "you would make a good Dalek." All prime moments in what's basically a perfect episode.

No one has ever convinced anyone of anything on 4chan. I'm expressing my view, you're expressing yours.. if you want to go down the whole contempt path, sure, but otherwise eh

Episodes like The Snowmen are pretty much why I like Doctor Who. It's an exciting episode that gets right on track and sets up who the characters are, what the motivations are, etc. and is written in a way that plays to Matt Smith's strengths. It contributes its own little bit to the series continuity by namechecking the Great Intelligence.

It's fun to watch, and is a nice, self-contained episode that doesn't rely on too much bombast or epic "the world is about to end!!!" that RTD so heavily leaned on. It's still about an abstract alien lifeform potentially conquering the universe, but it scales its scope down to be practically manageable within the format (i.e. the cast, the target audience, hell, even the budget) for what Doctor Who.

If Capt Jack, one of Moffs creations, couldn't make it past his own revision of the show.
I doubt a bland charter like Nardol will venture into Chibbs

>Noah Hawley
Oh shit, I should've thought of that. Forget I said RTD, I would pick Noah. I have no idea if he likes Doctor Who but he's a fantastic writer and his zany style would fit.

Clara was TOO prominent. She stole much of the show away from the titular Doctors. It's almost like someone was pretending and writing as if she was a female Doctor and the gentlemen she was with were just her quirky companions.
>>
I hated Clara staying a series too long and was so hyped for Bill. But Bill is so bad I actually now missy Clara and want her back. That's how horrific Bill is.

You just never liked Doctor Who in the first place

I guess at some point there were just enough people all living in the same society that it became possible to consistently meet people you'd never met or heard of before. So if you have any known familial relation that seems weird because you could go find someone with no known familial relation.

Nardole will be the most important person in the doctors life, and the most important boy the universe. He's the impossible boy and he will be brought back to life and given his own tardis

I don't think I watch enough bbc television or television in general to really have an opinion but I would unironically be hyped to fuck if Neil Gaiman was the showrunner

They're not blinded, though. Farting aliens is a meme. The episodes themselves are pretty fun and totally charm. Meanwhile Peter Capaldi gets PG-edgy and grimdark trash shit that's completely devoid of colour and joy,. Only autists who want to pretend Doctor Who is for MATURE, INTELLIGENT PEOPLE (tm) try to defend his Doctor and his episodes, because, it really isn't any of those things. It's just bleak, intellectually barren, humourless torpor.

Brave artistic choice Moffat.
>>
>>84265227
honestly, this is pretty accurate

Moffat had a very definitive idea for the arc of an entire w/r/t the whole Doctor Who/Silence/Trenzalore arc and wrote some really good episodes when he executed on that arc. He's said when he started writing episodes for 11, it was very much in anticipation of 11's regen. Insofar as 12 though, once he'd executed his big idea, he sort of ran out of ideas. Dark Water/Death in Heaven was plundering RTD-style stories for ideas, and S9's finale arc was a huge disservice to Clara insofar as writing her out – probably because he'd already written her out twice, and had no ideas left (ergo a bird kills her?)

S10 has fallen flat because Bill was a shitty companion – Nardole could've been amped up to fill in her shoes in a narrative sense, but the sex appeal wasn't there.. don't fucking kid yourself as to why you're watching the show. Without a gorgeous smile and a nice pair of knockers, the only reason to watch Who is for the sci-fi of it, and it has been a convoluted mess in that regard for a long time now. You're given some quarter in that Capaldi's a fantastic Doctor, but he can't save the shit writing the show has had the last few years.

I love you, Moffat, and Extremis was dope, but you should've checked out when you turned in the catastrophe that was Death in Heaven.

Most of Capaldi's episodes have had a darker, gloomier overtone than a lot of other episodes because the fit Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor better--I mean, let's be honest, he doesn't do 'fun' well, which is why a lot of people have fucked off because believe it or fucking not, Doctor Who started as a shitty sci-fi show, meant to be watched for fun, and has turned into some psuedo-try hard drama program.

Cool, if we ignore that the Silence and Trenzalore arc weren't repetitive cop-outs worthy of only cringes and yawns.

>the Doctor is going to die! There's no way to avoid it, it's a fixed point in ti - lol joke!
>the Doctor is going to die again! It's a fixed point in time, it's - lol joke!

Such original, much creative.

this is the shit that Delgado-era Master used to do lol
i remember reading this Delgado-era story once where he turned Ace into a limbless quadruple amputee with a carry handle between her tits literally just so he could make the pun "Carry Ace" and it was perfectly in character

i love it

I'm not a fan of the part of the arc
>The Impossible Astronaut
>Day of the Moon
>Let's Kill Hitler
>The Wedding of River Song
because Moffat shoehorned too much River Song into it, but /tv/ loved those episodes back in 2011 or 2012 or whenever it was.

>The Eleventh Hour
>The Pandorica Opens
>The Big Bang
>The Time of the Doctor

those are all high watermark episodes for the show

>A Good Man Goes To War
wasn't *great*, but had some strong scenes. if they'd ever capitalised on more of what was set up in it, it would've been looked back on more favourably

I prefer happy endings, The show doesn't need to be dark, plus death is a really cheap way to try and force the audience to have an emotional connection with the characters.

It's just painful to watch something like the end of WEaT knowing that there's absolutely zero chance it's going to matter because it's all going to be reversed and Bill will be fine. I'd rather they didn't do the Cyberconversion thing at all.
