>>
>>81942687
>Could the robots experiencing grief of their own lead to a better ending?
Yes. And it's bizarre this wasn't the ending. It felt like that's explicitly what they were setting up with one of the robots dying and the others not being sure how to process it. The Doctor should've sat them down and said "Hey, this is grief and death. This is what you've been doing to the humans" and make remorseful for their actions, instead of just sonicing their memories away.

>>81942722
Can I ask why? I've only just listened to the first gallifrey audio, but I've seen Narvin fan art over the years and gathered he was a fan favourite. So far he seems like a bit of a jerk though.

>The Doctor should've sat them down and said "Hey, this is grief and death. This is what you've been doing to the humans" and make remorseful for their actions, instead of just sonicing their memories away
Actually, better yet, Bill should've been the one to do that. The Doctor should've explained that he was about to wipe all of their memories, so she can (rightfully) be horrified by this and scold him for it (seriously, what is 12's deal with forcibly wiping sentient peoples' memories?) and push him aside and save the day by educating the robots.

Would've had some parallels with Beast Below's ending, which was the second episode of a season too.

>>81942879

Oh well I have that to look forward to then. He's just from the audios, right? Or is he a carry-over from the novels too, like Brax?

>Thread theme
No, that's enough.

>Are humans as "programmed" as robots?
Depends on the robots. (Also on the culture the humans grew up in—think of North Korea, which attempts to replace whatever genetic programming we have with much stronger cultural programming, and seems to be a lot more effective at it than I'd have liked to believe is possible.)

>Just how sentient are the emojibots?

>Could Class' ratings in the USA see BBCA co-producing a second series?

>Is Narvin timelordkino?
He's a great character.

>Could the robots experiencing grief of their own lead to a better ending?
Yeah, but even the idea they had could have been done as a better ending. FCB clearly has a problem with fitting endings onto his episodes, and Moffat should have been working with him harder on it.

Capaldi specifically talked about how they're having stories with no gaps, so that the ones that do have gaps will leave you wondering what adventures happened during that gap.

And as soon you're wondering that, Nick Briggs has an offer for you.
>>
>>81943021
Yeah desu I took his statement more as saying having episodes that interconnected makes it more clear that ones without that connection could have gaps between them

Narvin is audio only (but he does resemble Nivet a lot.) Just to be absolutely clear, Narvin starts out as a dick but receives some frankly astounding characterisation.

Braxiatel is carried over from the novels. Now Brax's timeline and characterisation is quite good but his characterisation is arguably the best in the Bernice Summerfield audios rather than the Gallifrey audios and the reasons are spoilers. His timeline is incredibly complicated and he is an incredibly complex character.

In fact, he specifically says they could have "a whole spinoff" in the gaps.

Capaldi is working on his pitch for a spinoff where the brainwashed Twelfth Doctor runs off between episodes 7 and 8 to team up with the Chumbleys and take over the universe, and only Ian Chesterton can stop him.

I'm surprised that the same guy who wrote In the Forest of the Hight wrote this episode. The forest episode was fucking abysmal, easily one of the dullest episodes in the history of Doctor Who episodes, while this was almost GOAT, except the ending ruined everything.
>>
>>81943361
I was fascinated by Braxiatel too and he was the reason I entered the Expanded Universe.

For the books the two must reads with Braxiatel are Family Man and Dead Mice.

But I think that the audios come first with Brax. Some of the arguably best Big Finish audios of all time come from his appearances in Bernice Summerfield.

I think forcibly wiping the memories of an entire race is pretty shitty. He was very casual and happy about it, when if they were really set on that ending it should've been more of a "I have to do this terrible thing because if I don't these robots will commit genocide" atmosphere to it
>>

The funny thing is that he started off as a crap idea, but some of the Virgin writers just got obsessed with how to turn a crap idea for a character into a great character, and they managed to succeed.

The BF Benny novels are more hit and miss, and they start off more like tie-ins for the audios than their own thing. But some of the short-story anthologies are great.

What's the crap idea? That he's the Doctor's brother? Because, to be honest, that's what attracted me to the character in the first place.

Although, I don't really know the history of how Brax came about. I know in Empires of Glass they never explicitly state the relation between him and the Doctor, they just heavily imply they're family.

Yeah, the Doctor's brother is one of those things that sounds cool, and then you think about what it would do to the mythology of the show and realise there's no way they could pull it off well…Except that, as it turns out, they did.

(Also, the reason Gary Russell invented him is that he thought we desperately needed an explanation of what the "Braxiatel Collection" that Romana mentioned in one line in CIty of Death was.)

I don't know about that. I think it's an idea that sounds interesting but has the potential to just be really generic, relying too much on "hey it's his brother, isn't this neat?". But I suppose there was also the risk of it ruining some mystery of the Doctor's pre-Unearthly Child life too.

I haven't heard/read enough Brax yet to really comment on how he plays off the Doctor, but I like to think in terms of Sherlock. If the Master is the Doctor's Moriarty, the idea of Brax being the Doctor's Mycroft is very attractive to me. The older, more sensible, smarter brother.

It's got good bants. There're some nice details, like how 5 reverts to being properly young like he's supposed to be when David crosses over into the Whoniverse. I like how the explanation for how an overly fanwanky story overpowers reality is itself kind of fanwanky, employing The Mind Robber's Land of Fiction. I especially like the Master's bit about whether "fictional" is different from "not real." And the whole last scene is GOAT.

Moffat is deliberately referencing episode #2 from multiple previous series. Also Nefertiti from Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, and I think there was something from Beast Below.

I wonder if he's going to keep that up all season. That might get a bit weird when he gets to episode #12 from previous series, when that was usually the first half of a two parter.

Yes, that would meet TDC's canon rules.

Canon is a fan-based idea that exists in a unique way within Doctor Who fandom. In theory, it means a body of work that an established body of literature that can draw upon[1], but it is more commonly thought as what a fan considers what forms part of the Doctor Who universe, or what "really happened". This is often a personal choice, one which is endlessly discussed and argued about in just about every Doctor Who-related forum or message board that has existed on the internet. Unlike the Star Trek and Star Wars universes, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has never made a pronouncement about what is or is not canon for Doctor Who.

First, recognition of the mention of Dr Who. He's ready to answer her question. He quickly remembers that he's not supposed to disclose the info. 'How could I forget?' He thinks to himself. But he's unsure. Maybe there was a press release without his knowledge. While these thoughts are processing, all he can muster up is a tragically unconvincing "W-well, who knows???" He immediately realises the gravity of fuckitude he'd just put on display. Damage control mode now. 'You didn't hear it from me, all I'm saying!' That'll do, he thinks to himself. Looks like I was as careless with my wording as the producers of the Adventure Games!
>>
>>81946785
Exactly. If you really care about an authoritative list of canon, that's the answer.

Which should make people examine why they think they want an authoritative list of canon in the first place.

>>81946790
No, that's not even remotely what they said.

Piers Wenger, announcing the Games:
>There aren't 13 episodes this year. There are 17, four of which are interactive. Everything you see and experience within the game is part of the Doctor Who universe.

It doesn't take place in the Doctor Who universe, they are part of the universe. That means they are in-continuity, canon events. (He's also explicitly calling them episodes of S5, but because nobody's ever declared S5 canon, that doesn't add anything.)

Phil Ford, when asked whether this meant the games, were canon:
>Absolutely.
>>
>>81946817
lmao, I wrote this last night. should i be flattered
>>
>>81946900
>No, that's not even remotely what they said.

Except it literally is.

"Players will encounter new and original monsters, in stories which form part of the overall Doctor Who canon"

That overall canon doesn't exist.

Not sure why you're trying to argue this point as we agree on the essential point anyway, that

>Which should make people examine why they think they want an authoritative list of canon in the first place.
>>
>>81946758
But why do the producers of S5 of NuWho get to declare canon?

The FASA RPG had a list of all of the stories in the canon: every episode of S1-22, Pescatons, and of course the upcoming FASA sourcebooks.

This is why ratings are down. This is why kids don't give a shit about Doctor Who. Too many pedo looking weirdos in their mid to late 20s acting like autism in public. The whole perception of what the show is, and who it's for is on the absolute shitheap.
>>
>there is no canon in Doctor Who.

what? the show hasa bible that explains what each character is, what the timeline is all the way from the 60's even.

there is canon on the show. humans leaving earth is a canon point of the show as is other things from the show. everything other than the show can be canon if the writers feel like including it. some things get fudge here and there to make thing fit but there is a canon, its just loose.
>>
>>81947431
yeah, except the ending was rushed.
>>
>>81947484
canon comes from authority, the authority (BBC) eschews the idea of canon for doctor who.

you're mixing up canon with continuity.
>>
>>81947484
Canon involves things being above each other - the TV show "happened more" than the audios, it takes precedence over events.

>everything other than the show can be canon if the writers feel like including it

The point is that it doesn't matter what the writers do because there is no godly authority declaring "this happened more than this other thing". The TV show isn't more "real" than the audios. Neither exist in reality, and the BBC doesn't consider either more "legitimate" than the other, because neither happened, and fictional canon is a dumb concept that reduces scope of storytelling.
>>
>>81947484

I highly encourage you to actually read Paul Cornell's essay - http://www.paulcornell.com/2007/02/canonicity-in-doctor-who/

Also, just in literal terms, the only canon Doctor Who is the Adventure Games. The BBC have never declared anything else to be canon, and the whole concept of canon comes from the IP holders declaring what is and isn't canon.

There was also a tumblr post where somebody was venting about this new trend of defending "non-offending" pedophiles, and she listed a bunch of adults in her life that were predatory towards her

And Phil reblogged it with something like "Ummm, those aren't non-offending pedophiles"

I'm probably not explaining it very well but it shocked me when I first saw it. Like this was somebody talking about their own family members hitting on them and making them uncomfortable when they were a child and Phil's priority is to tell them that they're wrong

There's an exclusive interview with Dollard next week. Because she's Australian, she probably watched Rove when she was younger too. Should be interesting to see.

>What if Daniel Radcliffe is the next doctor?

Why didn't "The Doctor" just fly his blue box away from the dullest franchise in the history of British science fiction franchises? Seriously each series following the renegade timelord and his rotating cast of spunky young women as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make science unscientific, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Moffatt vetoed the idea of Capaldi directing the series; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for Sherlock. The Doctor Who series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Star Trek series in its refusal of thought-provoking dialogue, scientific principles and moral quandary. No one wants to face that fact. Soon, thankfully, they will no longer have to.

>a-at least the classic series were good though r-right
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the show was terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time the lead character should have died, the writers insisted instead that the character "regenerated."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that trope was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope at least a dozen times. I was incredulous. Doctor Who is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that it has no other style of plot. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Doctor Who by the same Moffatt. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Doctor Who at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to watch Graham Norton." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch "Doctor Who" you are, in fact, trained to watch Graham Norton.

Still can't believe Rove namedropped Big Finish. It was in response to something someone said so I'm certain it was impromptu, and not something another writer told him to say
