Yeah Chibnall thinking of emulating an American writer's room, with only new writers no less, would be a very different approach. Could result in kino, but I'll be pretty disappointed if the new talent of Mathieson and Dollard doesn't carry over. Much as I dislike most of Gatiss' episodes, I'll be disappointed if the tradition of him doing an ep every series ends too, as it seems it will from the interview he gave where he said he had no knowledge of what Chibs is up to.

I still want Charlie Brooker to write an ep when he gets time. Bringing back some other writers from Classic Who could be cool too. Oh, and I'd love Paul Cornell to do another ep sometime.

A well earned one too - I thought Broadchurch S3 was great, and it has me excited to see what he'll do with Who, even though I'm not a particular fan of his DW episodes. Perhaps he's the sort of writer that needs a lot of control to shine. Certainly, him shadow-showrunning Torchwood S2 resulted in a better set of episodes than the individual stuff he wrote for S1.
>>

Pretty much. Mathieson and Dollard are just writers though, they haven't showran anything, so it's possible they'll actually get brought into the writer's room, if he goes in that direction. But I don't see anyone like Whithouse or Harness, who have actually ran TV shows before, doing that - it's typically more of a "junior" position.

I don't think we can underestimate the impact Simm will have on the ratings. As frustrating as we find the stuff like Facebook posts of people moaning "BRING BACK RTD AND TENNANT", there really is a sizeable amount of people who think that way, and will be very energised by such an iconic part of RTD's era returning.

Maybe I'm completely wrong, and it will have barely any effect at all, but I do think Simm will provide quite the boost. If he does pop up in the Truth Monk eps, as some unreliable spoilerhounds have postulated, he may be the secret weapon to combat the midseries slump in ratings.

It's insane how much neater the idea people have kicked around off "the emojibots experience grief when that dude shoots one of them, then either independently, or with a helpful lecture from the Doctor, learn how to process grief properly and thus understand and get along with the humans" is. What was Boyce thinking!?

>>81952384
Heh, or at the very least, 40 people in /casualwhostream/
>>
>>81952333
You have a point, assuming they market it properly
It's entirely possible that normies didn't recognise simm in last week's trailer since it was dark and he had a beard - I watched the episode with my dad and I had to point it out to him, and he's a moderate doctor who fan (he grew up with it and knows the show well but doesn't follow production news)
I'm sure a lot of them still don't know, and they need to in order for the ratings bump to happen

The humans didn't really even mistreat the Vardi. It seemed pretty harmonious at the start. But I guess it wasn't an entirely happy ending. The humans are just told to smile and forget about it. More than likely, the rest of the Earthlings won't be told about the incident after they wake up.

I agree, and that's why I'm sure that they intended Simm's appearence to get leaked when they screened The Pilot (and thus that trailer) to the press. "JOHN SIMM RETURNS TO DOCTOR WHO" in the tabloids gets to people better than a 1 second flash of a bearded Simm in the dark.

Perhaps the NEXT TIME before whatever episode he first appears in will lean heavily on his appearance. Who knows? Maybe they'll bungle the marketing potential and barely advertise it more than a flash again.

She's certainly better when she's not the center of attention. Or at least, not the center of a played out, uninteresting "This Doctor fella is kind of weird" story.
I also really like how she isn't hyper competent. Clara would have solved the mystery all by herself AND called the Doctor stupid for the rest of the episode. Bill was there, she asked questions, she was good with the kid, and she found the dead woman. That's about it. She's great support and Pearl Mackie sells it.

His appearance could also be in a cliffhanger, which would give the media a whole week to prep unaware audiences to watch the following episode.

The only reason I think it might not be a cliffhanger is because they intentionally gave it away so early.

Any love for Death Comes To Time? This was the BBC's first Dr Who content since the series ended back in the day.

I was pretty surprised too. I don't know how much of a traditional Showrunner she was though, but she's credited as "Creator" for every episode. Although "Writer" for only 3.

>Have you seen it; is it any good?
I've only seen two or three episodes, because they were all I could find on Youtube. No idea how I'd get my hands on the whole series, it's all in Welsh so it seems fairly obscure.

I liked it. It's sort of like a Soap, but it seemed decent. That "ARE YOU WORTHY OF THE HORNS?" is a screencap from one of the episodes by the way (as is this).

I agree really. Its 16 years old and the BBC was experimenting with how to make web content at the time.

The Shada fix-up was done in a similar way. It wouldn't entirely surprise me if there was some sort of demarcation politics issue vs. radio production.

That's what the companion is for. The best Doctors (Tom Baker, Capaldi) are the most alien. Smith was alright in that sense too but what he did really well was portraying the old man in the young body even if he's not my favourite Doctor.

let's hope he doesn't. RTD soiled the show by doing that with 10, its the reason why we have so many people like you who don't understand what is literally one of the most basic elements of the doctor's personality. its also why we have people clamouring for a doctor/companion relationship all the time.

Peter Capaldi, the man himself, has a nuanced and well-expressed opinion on the whole "how alien should the Doctor be". Really recommend watching the video to hear it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8O2sIh0yq8

One way or another, the companion absolutely has always been intended (in NewWho) to be the most relatable character out of the Doctor/companion pairing.

The Time War is nowhere near as temporally fucked up as anyone expected it to be, it's basically just a regular space war but all the weapons have "time" slapped onto their names.

The plot of Dark Eyes 1 was more like a "Time War" battle than anything of the actual Time War we've been shown.
>>
>>81954742
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the 50th + the audios = Hurt did as much time as the Doctor as Eccleston, lol. It's nice to hear him play the role. The writing is just appallingly bad. I'm a massive Big Finish fan so I'm not just randomly shitting on them (of their New stuff, I think Torchwood and River Song are legit kino), they're bizarrely bad. Combination of Briggs committing to extremely standard, lame stories, and apparently the BBC said they couldn't depict the WarDoc particularly dark (annoying since 7 is depicted super dark in the audios plenty of times).

For good Time War stories on audio, there are
*The Sontaran Ordeal - Classic Doctors, New Monsters
uhh, what else, Dark Eyes and Doom Coalition are kinda at the very very start of the Time War, very early days before it explodes into all-out war. Dark Eyes is great (I love all 4 to varying degrees, some people only think the first set is great), DC3 and DC4 are pretty good.
>>
>>81954838
The biggest missed opportunity was not bringing back the Dalek Time Controller.

Yes I know he became the Eminence but that's never stopped anybody before.

Briggs's performance as the Dalek Time Strategist just doesn't have the personality behind it that the Dalek Time Controller had.

Anyone else feel bad that nuwho took the direction of space fantasy rather than sci fi?
Ecclestone's season was closest to "sci fi" as I imagine it, and I loved it. Most of RTD era follows that but in the end it becomes more and more fantasy-like.

It's easy to get swept up in "WOW John Hurt, an actual War Doctor series!", even I did for the first set for a bit, but the rest of the day after listening, the more I reflected on them, the more and more I disliked what we got. And then the next 3 sets did not fix things at all, for me personally. Definitely worth forming your own opinion on though, I imagine surely there are some people that Briggs Finish's particular take would work great for.

Classic Doctors New Monsters was rather good wasn't it? I loved 8s and 6s stories particularly. Their NewWho output is really great for the most part (not so keen on the new UNIT stuff or WarDoc, but River, Torchwood, Tennant, all great).

It doesn't really matter in the context of the show, but the idea is that being Gallifreyan is a race, and only some Gallifreyans get the required education to become a Time Lord. I don't think they ever mention this in the TV series at all though, I think it's only established in some of the books.
>>
>>81955577
Not sure if spoilers or not, but fuck it: Time Lords are basically just Gallifreyans who can time travel + regenerate,
more or less. The Doctor's a Gallifreyan, and a Time Lord.
Here, it's Classic Who spoilers: In the original run, they planned on making one of his companion,
Ace, a Time Lord, which could've meant that she could time travel and regenerate,
or time travel. In the Gallifrey audio series,
it seems to imply the latter rather than the former.

Yeah it's like a university degree and they receive a Rassilon Imprimatur allowing them to pilot a TARDIS when they enter the Gallifreyan Academy.

The TLs are the elite caste of Gallifreyan society, there are Shabogans and Outsiders outside Gallifrey who are highly looked down upon.

Ace McShane is a Time Lord because she's a human who went through the Academy. By the time Romana came to presidency the Academy allowed aliens to learn time travel.

I like to think of them in ways that they pissed me off and who did it the least.

Rose: Wanted Doctor dick and thought she was the most important person in his entire life (meeting Sarah Jane was a very comfy to watch reality check for her)
Martha: Wanted Doctor dick but apart from that there wasn't that much annoying about her (apart from her bitch mum) except for being rather boring
Donna: Can't really find a fault, thought she was great.
Amy: Wanted Doctor dick, thought she was the most important person in his life, treated Rory like shit in the beginning - however, once Rory joined the crew it balanced out Amy's negatives somewhat so she was at least better than Rose.
Clara: Just fucking awful smug bitch. Don't have time to list everything wrong with her. Also wanted Doctor dick until Capaldi.
Bill: #lolI'msorandom, can manage first after first on uni papers but can't get her arse into gear to do anything else with her life, purely made just to appease tumblr and twitter people. Less punchable than Clara though.

Because for all the talk of War being the incarnation all the other Doctors refuse to talk about, he isn't particularly monstrous or pragmatic in any of the audios. I don't see her as normal though, the quirkyness factor is a main point, i know it's the scriptwriter but she just has the perfect comeback for everything to make light of something the doctor says. no one would go into the tardis and compare it to a kitchen, and then ask for the toilet. and on a sidenote why was she so enthralled about being on a spaceship in Smile when she's already been in one (two if it's a ship that the daleks and Movellans were fighting on). Being black and gay doesn't matter either, but the fact they're trying to make it matter is annoying. We've had black assistants (martha, mickey briefly) and it didn't matter that they were black. We had a gay assistant in Captain Jack and the focus wasn't on the fact he was gay/bi but the fact that he was a horny bugger that would sleep with everything.

BBC is legally unable to consider stuff like this due to the charter agreement. They are a public service broadcaster, if the show isn't getting enough BRITISH views to justify the investment, which it isn't, then it WILL be cancelled.

I don't get the idea that the Sycorax are ripped off from the Faction. They don't act like FP at all. The Faction wouldn't want to enslave a third of 2005-era humanity. The Sycorax just seemed more like tribal warlords than anything else.

Are there "iconic" scenes/moments from Big Finish? Like how everyone talks about the "Do I have the right" line in Genesis, or Seven in the cafe talking about unforeseen ripples?

None that I could generally speak of, but personally, Arrangements for War is possibly the first Big Finish story that stood out for me. No clue why, I saw the cover again today and memories of the story flooded back.

Yeah, it was one of the few times Big Finish sneakily got some New Series stuff in before they had the license. It's one of 8s latest stories chronologically.

Also it was pre WarDoc so he could have been conceived of as an active fighter in the Time War at that point too

Yes, I'm including this as a Torchwood release despite it taking place before and after Torchwood
>>
>>81959808
Yeah it's legit great, I love it, the individual stories especially. VERY comfy. VERY well constructed stories. There's no Briggs/Fitton-esque "le generic episode of the TV show adapted with a recurring villain, fuck characterisation" approach, it feels like it's own thing even though it's in tight continuity with the TV show (it even finds ways to retcon Miracle Day to work better).

Seriously worth a try at least. Fall to Earth and Ghost Mission might be good taste testers, the former is a very standalone story but really well-told, the latter is SUPER comfy.
>>
>>81959808
It's pretty great. First episode is kinda standard, then it gets to proper Torchwood stories like killer sexbot doppelgangers.
