I think the reason they didn't delve into Jack's past was because RTD came up with the idea for Torchwood, not because Eccleston left. (And then, on Torchwood S2, they did delve into Jack's past, but it obviously couldn't have been Doctor-centric, so Chibs had to come up with something completely new to focus on.)

I may not be remembering all the details right, but something like this, mostly from S2:

The Time Agency were routinely, but secretly, manipulating their agents' memories. John Hart found evidence of that, which Jack followed up on after John vanished. He discovered that he'd lost not only two years of his recent memory (the memory loss he first mentioned in An Empty Child) but also all but one of the happy memories of his family (the one memory he had to sacrifice at the end of Adam). And that was the reason he defected.

Writing a script to do something that is basically useless and completely unasked for is a ridiculous amount of work too. And they don't copy-paste all posts, and I doubt the script would know how to save images, reduce them by a few pixel to avoid image detection, and repost them.

Although they did that Briggs post in almost exactly a minute which seems really fast, so maybe it is a script.

How about a gif?

Well, copying posts forward is at least arguably useful, although I think I'd argue the other side. But copying them backward is completely useless, so the only reason I could imagine doing it is that it's only a couple extra lines once you've written the script, rather than double the work if you're doing it manually.

(Also, if you wanted to teach yourself how to script 4chan for some more useful and/or malicious purpose, most of the stuff he has to do for this script would be exactly the stuff you'd want to figure out.)

I like chibnall and some of his non doctor who stuff is amazing, but his who stuff is very lightweight. I'm hoping this is because the episode ideas came from other show runners and he tried to make the most of bad ideas (dinosaurs on a spaceship was too much crap to pour into one episode for example).
>>
>>81804135
>Well, copying posts forward is at least arguably useful
Depends on the posts.

That is how it started though, a couple of nights ago I was having a discussion with someone right when the new thread was made. Somebody else copy-pasted my post, I pointed this out, and they explained that it was a good discussion and they wanted to see it continue. It seems like it's grown from there.

But yeah, pasting posts into the old thread is completely useless. Also, they failed the gif test. Didn't include it.

There is no great mystery, this is why I do it. I've had conversations wither out before because I moved into a new thread, and the last person hadn't, and nobody bothered tying the convos together. It's being the "cans and string" between the threads, like you put it. I'm not a malicious scripter or whatever ffs, just trying to make sure actual on-topic discussions don't wither away

You must be new. Please install 4chan-x it will let you see cross thread posts and there are also notifications so if anyone quotes my post from a previous thread it will notify me if I see it. It also works across boards so for example if someone quotes my /tv/ post on /a/ and I open an /a/ thread will get the notification.
>>
>>81804280
I've been here since the start of 2013 and had 4chanX for years. Not everyone has it. I appreciate the advice though, it is a fantastic extension.

Also it quickly sets the tone for a new thread to not be endless shitposts because it keeps any actual on-topic convos going. The first ~15 posts in a thread can really steer the direction of it.
>>
>>81804296
Yeah it really depends on the number of people using it. I've generally never seen people repost previous posts though, unless it is at the very end of a thread (page 10 or so) or if it's a drawfag delivery for example.

not the anon ur talking to, but
wat? no it doesnt? how do you make it do that. i use it and its never done that for me when someone replies. what do you mean by notification
>>
>>81804173
Well, for every useful post that someone makes on the old thread, there's usually multiple useless ones.

And it seems to only run sometimes, not every thread, so it's not something people can rely on to keep conversations together.

Meanwhile, using extensions or userscripts is something each person can rely on (without affecting anyone else). So this is probably only going to really help people who don't get 4chan yet.

But, as implied by my calling it arguably useful, and the fact that I only "think" I'd argue the other side, I'm not dead-set against it or anything; I think it's worth arguing (or, ideally, discussing dispassionately, but this is 4chan after all…).

4chan-x desktop notifications. It will also work across computer so for example I use chrome on both computers and 4chan-x will literally sync threadwatchers and remember that I made the post - no matter which computer I made the post on. It's very, very nifty.

>>

It's not bothering me at all but it's an unusual approach. I think most people prompt the discussion by saying something along the lines of, last thread we discussed x or just bring up an alternate point on the discussion or quote a previous post.

That's actually a good point, and one I hadn't thought of. (And I suspected there would be things I hadn't thought of, which is exactly why I wasn't sure I'd be against it.)

I'm still not sure it's the best way to do that, but… it might be worth watching the threads when you are vs. aren't doing it for a while to get an idea of whether it really is helping.
>>
>>81804392
Not him but duplicate image block is incredibly easy, just add a slightly different pixel to one part of the image or tweak the levels a tiny bit.

>>

It still doesn't make sense. Why do you post them back into old threads? Why repost posts like >>81803941 and >>81803999 that aren't actually discussion and can only serve to derail/spam the new thread? Why go to the hassle of saving images, resizing them, and reposting them?

It's still really weird of you, anon.
>>
>>81804431
>Why do you post them back into old threads?

I've answered that

>that aren't actually discussion

That's subjective

>Why go to the hassle of saving images, resizing them, and reposting them?

Hassle? It takes less than fifteen seconds.

Also, just musing here, but the fact it seems to irritate people like you means someone might start mimicking me and doing it in a more overtly shitposty way.
>>
>>81804418
Sure, but if I wanted to do it, I'd do it with a one-liner imagemagick script. It's a lot more time-consuming to do it all in a GUI—download the file, open it in MSPaint/Preview/xv/whatever, make a trivial change, save it, and reupload it. That seems like more work than I'd want to do for every post.

Then again, I'm lazy, which is why I learned how to program in the first place, so I can spend 3 hours to save 15 seconds of work in hopes that I'll have to do that work so many times that eventually it'll save more than 3 hours. :)
>>
>>81804514
You can actually copy and paste the file into MSP add a pixel copy it and paste into the post box and 4chan (or 4chan-x?) will automatically detect the paste as an image.
>>
>>81804542
Ah, I didn't even know you could do that. Nifty!

It quite literally is, and clearly we are not going to agree on this point if we are hashing out the old "subjective vs objective!!" argument. You aren't the arbiter of what constitutes "discussion".

>>81804666
>But it has 0 benefit
You're moving the goalposts if you're arguing that. I explained why it isn't hassle to me. Whether it has benefit is both subjective, and a new point.

>but you seem really serious about this
You're taking the time to go line-by-line on my posts (as I am in turn, because if you're that interested in talking this out I'm happy to respect that and reply in turn) so, sure, I'm happy to take a fellow /who/re seriously, but this really isn't something that weighs heavily on my mind. I spent a few minutes crossposting comments while listening to some BF, for something to do with my hands and to keep any embers of discussion going that might peter out between threads, as had happened to others before.

BBC America complete ratings are out.

Class has a retention of 58%, and 59% in the 18-49 demo, which is way better than I think most people expected, and good news for P.Ness.

But these ratings may be heavily distorted by the fact that the NBA playoffs were on at the same time, which drove down ratings for everything else on cable. Are people who casually like Doctor Who but skip it for basketball more or less likely to like Class?

So instead of getting a "first Irish Doctor" who's not at all Irish, we're going to get a "first Jewish Doctor" who is technically one-quarter Jewish but didn't know anything about Jewish culture until he got hired for Friday Night Dinner.

Why not just find a slightly effeminate man with a tan and call him the first black female Doctor?

A friend who is really good friends with one of the scriptwirters (someone who wrote during the RTD era, but is still in the loop) recently put £200 on PIC RELATED at a bookies while I was with him a few weeks ago. The same thing happened with Matt Smith and the one who plays Bill so I'm inclined to think he might be throwing his money away.

When Ladbrokes reopened betting, Rosenthal was 20:1. He's still 20:1 right now.

The person with the biggest increase in the past 24 hours is Michaela Coel, but she's still in 3rd place at 4:1.

Meanwhile, we've got an article that doesn't even claim an "inside source", and just says he's "now said to be the surprising frontunner".

Why do people want to keep believing every rumour or tabloid article is "confirmation"? Is it worth being able to say "Ha, I was right to believe them!" one time when you were proven wrong 28 times in the past three months for believing other ones?

Alfred Enoch looks 14. Why can't he be the 15th Doctor a few years down the road?

Yes, it would be nice to have the Doctor meet Ian again and have them be father and son, but that one scene is not a good enough reason to make up for 3 years of a guy being the Doctor too early in his career and not pulling it off.

Betting news: Huge run on Richard Rankin at Coral, who just reopened betting, but nothing on the other sites.

Coral reset their odds to Ladbrokes' current. Within 30 minutes, Rankin went from 12:1 to 1:1, making him the frontrunner.

But at Ladbrokes, he's still 12:1, tied for 7th place, and not much higher anywhere else.

That almost certainly means only a small number of people doing all the betting on him. Which could mean they know something secret, or it could mean they know something secret but it's not true, or it could just mean his publicist wants to get him on the news tonight.

Moffat says most of Smile is the Doctor and Bill walking around talking in order to cement their relationship, so i'm thinking Moffat probably wrote most of the dialogue in this one and Frank just wrote the action bits and came up with the story setting and concept/characters. I'd say you obviously know nothing about BBC Studios.

Here's a much more plausible rumour if you want to shitpost about Doctor Who dying:

BBC Studios is, after two weeks in independent operation, on the verge of collapse. We have some last-ditch plans, but if none of them work, we're going to talk to the Trust about liquidating the corporation and selling off its assets. Netflix, Amazon, and Disney have already put out feelers about Doctor Who.

BBC Studios going into liquidation is not that likely, but it is still much more likely than them canceling Doctor Who.

There is no such thing as "the BBC" anymore. BBC Studios is an independent corporation, as of this month. And that corporation really is already in serious trouble. Much of their upper management quit in the first two weeks. They've been pressured into a deal with the independent producers to tender up to 40% of their shows in anticipation of the white paper recommending independent coproduction. Mark Linsey seems to have no idea what he's doing.

The idea that they're in so much trouble that they'd have to liquidate is a stretch.

But if it did go that far, of course they would sell off Doctor Who, because that's what liquidation means: they sell off everything.

And, while it's a stretch, the idea that they'd somehow cancel a show which is nearly half the value of their brand is far more ridiculous.

Short version: because Tories.

The long version is pretty complex, but the idea is that privatising most of BBC Television, even though the new commercial corporation is still (at least initially) owned 100% by BBC Trust, means that it's no longer bound by some of the regulations they put on the BBC, and it gets to write quarterly stockholder reports instead of annual reports to Parliament, and they hope this will allow it to be "more efficient".

Nope, because drawing porn and art in general is frustrating and requires concentration most of the time.

Yes, because a news article that doesn't even claim to have inside sources is "confirmation".

In fact, because none of those articles are ever bullshit, it's confirmed that Kris Marshall, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Tom Rosenthal are all going to be the 13th Doctor at once.

That seems to be the consensus, but I'll probably give it a look anyway. If anything just to see the differences. Tbh i don't know why "we" americans remake shows with partially the same cast. Like Cuckoo with greg davies. It's just fucking silly.
>>81809641
I hadn't heard that. He's got a "look" about him though, and he was genuinely funny in that apocalypse show.
>>81809666
That's why I said prefer. I'd prefer Tom Ellis out of all of them, but he's busy making Lucifer(which is way better than it has business being.)
>>

but hes prolly busy with lucifer, i mean heck if were talking fancasting here id loved to see a jonny lee miller doctor
>>

The ratings were 0.19 in the 18-49 demo, 535K total viewers.

Which is pretty good for BBC America, and for basic cable in general, but not at all spectacular.

Also keep in mind that, unlike most BBCA shows, it may not get far more internet views than broadcast views, because many people who watch shows on the internet have already seen it.

Finally, because it happened to be scheduled during the NBA playoffs (which are also on basic cable), the ratings are almost meaningless.

But 59% retention of the Doctor Who audience looks good. If that number is reasonably consistent across most of the overseas markets that are scheduling them together, and if it stays consistent as the season drags on (and, in the US, when it finally comes up on a night that isn't dominated by basketball), that's definitely good enough to renew the show, and maybe even to try putting it on BBC2 in the UK instead of the internet.

But that's a lot of ifs.

Our Lord and master Fady el Sayed from Class, of course. Bonus points if they're naked but if they have clothes on it'll still be hot as fuck.
>>
>>81809770
>If anything just to see the differences

Most episodes are shot-for-shot remade. They change stuff a bit more at the end. It's legit bad though, not just as a remake, but as a show. I watched it out of morbid curiosity though so I understand the impulse.
>>
>>81809770
>Tbh i don't know why "we" americans remake shows with partially the same cast.
At least Americans are no longer turning every 6-episode series into a 26-episode season but still trying to use scenes directly out of the original, like the first two seasons of The Office.
>>
>>81809770
Yeah I can't find anything about it now but I remember it so vividly.
Everyone hated the idea because he hadn't been in anything (neither that apocalypse show, or plebs were a thing at that point) so no one knew who he was
I also wasn't excited, but I'l give the apocalypse show a go. He was also pretty decent in Game of Thrones, even if his character was fucking arse. Not that I expect him to be 13 or anything.

Criminally underrated. Been a fan since hackers, but idk If I can see him as the doctor, though admittedly I haven't seen his sherlock.

How silly.
>>81809979
Thankfully the cable network shows are moving to the shortened season/series format in general, instead of padding it out to a full 13, or 24 episodes.
>>81809998
Didn't even know he was in GoT. Apocalypse show was good. I wanted a second series out of it, but It doesn't look like that will happen. The writing would have probably been a nightmare.

Actually, I think they could possibly steal him away from Lucifer if they wanted, assuming they aren't planning to start filming S11 too soon.

The ratings are dropping, the show is on its third showrunner in 18 months, and Fox has knocked the buy order back from 23 episodes to 18 (although they're apparently still going to film 21 or 22 episodes and just hold the extras off to broadcast next year).

If Tom wanted to leave for Doctor Who, I'm pretty sure he could get Modrovich to film the rest of a half season and then drop the show. She has no personal investment in Lucifer, and could easily get Fox to give her something else to take over, especially if it goes out on a high. And with the free publicity from starring the newly-announced Thirteenth Doctor, that high wouldn't be too hard to pull off.
