Nardole is very promising, but I won't call him great until we get to at least episode 4 or 5 or whichever one he's supposed to stop being a background character and start getting his own story.

Still, even if he doesn't turn out to be great, having him in the TARDIS crew is great, if for no other reason than the fact that jokes that Moffat would have felt compelled to give to the Doctor or Bill can go to him instead, giving him more freedom to write their characters.

he was, it was weird seeing him in a serious role on an incredibly expensive show after only being in weird low budget sitcoms
>>81810431
I agree, I like his presence.
>>81810469
I think in Husbands he was just written as a one-off comedy character. Then when they decided to bring him back they thought he should be more of an actual character.
I remember Matt Lucas said something like "you couldn't have Nardole from Husbands of River Song for an entire series" because that would be grating as fuck
So even in Doctor Mysterio there's an improvement where Moffat changed him from comic relief to an actual character

He's actually really misterious. Why does the Doctor keeps him as an assistant? He clearly doesn't trust him that much, and he doesn't seem to expecially like him. Yet he's here as a comic relief. I don't know how to react because I want to find out more about him but at the same time I can't see such a character having a proper arc.

What current Doctors could conceivably be in the 100th anniversary? Matt and David I guess?
>>
>>81810803
Alfred Enoch. Tennant will be dead by then.
>>
>>81810803
Tennant would be 92, so unlikely, but possible

Smith would be 81. Possible.

No real chance of any other Doctors. Jenna and some other companions might be alive and willing, but there will be so much continuity by then I doubt the showrunner will bring back past companions. Although Jenna (or Piper, I guess) might be a nice parallel with the 50th, if Matt and David are both dead.
>>
>>81810704
Well at first The Doctor just kept him around to stop feeling lonely. It was right on the heels of his last date with River Song and Nardole was the first one available

Now I reckon he's just gotten fond of having him around, like handles or something

Personally I could see a Moffat bullshit twist of Nardole is The Master/a servant of The Master/generally evil simply due to his line in RoDM: "I promise, in the end, he'll be all right. I'll make sure of it." I t just sounds really ominous to me

Tom Baker was 79 or 80 in the 50th, right? And if life expectancies keep going up the way they have been, by then, 100 will be the new 80 and Tennant will be 8 years short of that.

(Of course if the trend reverses because of food and medicine shortages and unhealthy air quality and problems like that, that's a different story. But then we probably won't get a 100th Doctor Who anniversary, just the we-don't-know-which-does-anyone-have-a-calendar anniversary of Remain Indoors.)

The nature of IP has changed so much in the last ten years and it's not going to change back - recognisable, time-honoured IPs with built-in audiences will only get more valuable. There will be a 100th, even if in a form we dislike. Also it's impossible to overstate what the lack of canon does for the longevity of Doctor Who.

It's over for you.

This is the end. Your time has come. It's a wrap. The clock has struck midnight. Time to go. Time to pack it all in. You've had a good run. You've lived quite a life. You've done this and that. You've loved, lost, and loved some more. You've accumulated quite a collection of memories about people, places, and things. Take a moment to reflect on them all. Allow the entire tableau of your time here on earth to flash before your eyes. Acquire a final, overwhelming sense of peace. Know that everything will be okay. Look into that approaching tunnel of light. Reach out your hand to Jesus. Be struck by the presence of god. Face your own mortality. Take it like a man. You have little choice, now. Might as well accept the way things are.

m8 look at hollywood now compared to hollywood 5, 10, 15 years ago. IP is everything. nostalgia is everything. studios are getting less and less likely to invest in original IPs, and more and more likely to use old ones. Doctor who's lack of canon and inherent predilection for changing format to suit the needs of the day means it will survive a very long time

>Nostalgia is everything now, because of millennials.

As much, if not more, the boomers. Honestly it's endemic to popular culture now, not just a generational thing. It's not so much audiences as studios. They are less inclined to take risks now, which means old IPs. It doesn't even matter if audiences love them, just that they recognise them.

BBC Worldwide gets the money. That's the BBC's commercial arm that funds merchandise like DVDs. That money does not go to the BBC itself to produce new episodes of Doctor Who.

If the ratings fall in the UK, it'll get cancelled regardless of what BBC Worldwide's raking in.

>As much, if not more, the boomers. Honestly it's endemic to popular culture now, not just a generational thing.
Yeah, since Gen X was so much smaller than previous generations, pop culture became all about retro in the late 70s to early 80s, from TV shows like Happy Days to bands like Shanana and the Stray Cats. By 2000, we had a whole generation that grew up on retro, and retro-retro was already a thing. The loop was permanently closed before the millennials even got into it.

The only reason there's more 10/Master porn than with earlier Doctors is that 10 is prettier than earlier Doctors. It's certainly not because there was no homoerotic tension with the earlier Doctors. Even when the Master briefly strayed to tie up Mike Yates or Adric or "the Asian kid", he always came back to the Doctor.

I don't know. Other than Martha and Jack, the second story for most NuWho companions, they've usually been better than in their next few stories. Rose in End of the World, Donna in Pompeii, Amy in Beast Below, Rory in Amy's Choice, and Clara in Akhaten were better than they were in the next few episodes. And Nardole's second episode as companion was a step up too (whether that means Mysterio vs. Husbands or Pilot vs. Mysterio).

And in classic Who, you're talking about stories like Daleks, Romans, Time Meddler, Tomb of the Cybermen, Silurians, Mind of Evil, Ark in Space, Robots of Death, Pirate Planet, City of Death, State of Decay, Logopolis, Androzani, and Remembrance.

I would love a Hayley Doctor as much as any/who/re. But Chibs has chosen someone Tennant-ish to bring back the fangirls.

>>81813336
>When it comes to the matter of gender in particular, some fans have long argued that the traditional male Doctor and female primary companion (as the Doctor has had male secondary companions, most famously Captain Jack Harkness) dichotomy is even essential to the show.
So Jamie wasn't a "primary companion"? Or by "some fans" do they mean "NuWho scrubs" and by "long argued" they mean "have demanded another Rose for the last few years"?
>>
>>81813314
the doctor should never be a traditionally attractive women

>>

They basically mean nuwho.

When only nuwho fans look back on the classic era, they see Susan, Sarah-Jane, Ace etc.
For some reason they don't count the males.

Also, the Doctor and Wilfred was the greatest team up in the history of Doctor Who so this person's chatting shit.
>>
>>81813536

>>
>>81813628
the doctor should never just be pointless eyecandy they should always be someone you can respect

>>
Just got back from the screening. It's Simm's Master.
>>
>>81813617
Yeah, I know NuWho fans are silly.

But really, the only time Classic Who restricted itself to female-only companions was late S21-26, and why anyone would think that's proof of a successful formula that NuWho must slavishly copy is beyond me.
>>
>>81813704
You mean Neville? Oh, we all already know that.
>>
Nardole is Cousin Owis.
>>
>>81813669
And attractive women can't be respected?
>>
>>81813669
"Pointless eyecandy" is not the same thing as "any conventionally attractive woman".

An unattractive woman can be pointless. An attractive woman can be a well-written and well-acted character. And if you can't respect that character anyway, that's your problem, and not a particularly common one.

I don't remember anyone saying they can't handle Buffy the Vampire Slayer because Sarah Michelle-Gellar isn't ugly enough for them to respect her, or anyone thinking Voyager was the best Star Trek ever because Janeway was unattractive enough to respect.
>>
>>81813669
I think with the right casting, you can make the Doctor a traditionally attractive woman and still have them be respectable. I wouldn't mind seeing a female doctor try and play an old man.

But I doubt whether or not these new people would actually cast the right person or make the right choices with the plot over it.

I kinda wish they choose a white guy again just so I can bask in DOCTOR WHO HATES WOMEN tumblr comments.
>>
>>81813792
>I kinda wish they choose a white guy again just so I can bask in DOCTOR WHO HATES WOMEN tumblr comments.
I'm far more interested in them picking a good, Doctorish actor that they have a great idea of how they want to write for, so I can bask in Doctor Who being good. If Chibnall has better ideas for an old Eskimo woman than a hot white man, then please, hire the old Eskimo woman.

The Benefactors have been building an empire of planets for as long as the Doctor can think of, in the dark, patiently. They are on the rise, looking to obtain the Time Opener, but a minor skirmish when the Daleks invade one of their planets threatens to thwart their plans. Worse, the Daleks may obtain the deadly weapon. Caught in this war, the Doctor and his friends must stop both sides from getting to the Time Opener, the only way to save the universe. Except the Doctor's oldest friend, Missy, has set her eyes on the weapon already...

I'm an ugly fucker. Alarmingly, I'm told I look like pic related.

As the Doctor that is, not Mr Bean. At least I hope so.

The whole "stop accepting bad storytelling" came from an anti-Moffat Facebook rant he made, but in this video he says Doctor Who is in a really bad place and has stalled creatively, saying series 8 and 9 are the worst series since the show's revival
>>
Sorry if wrong thread, but is Christel Dee transgender?
>>
>>81815508
She's a genderfluid genius.
>>
>>81815508
No. She just has an unconditional love for pussy.
>>
Should Emilia Clarke be 13?
>>
Beryl is the best companion. Fight me.
>>
CUNT
>>
>>81815600
No, she should be 14.

In the books, that's how old whatshername Targaryen was in the books when her brother sold her to the Khan as a wife, so making her 14 would be faithful adaptation of the source material, but making her 13 would be disgusting child pornography.

She's no Cliff Chesterton, Lola McGovern, or Bridget, but she's better than Ellie from Sarah Jane.

Best work of Gatiss.

If I was Capaldi, I'd have just told him to fuck off in full Malcom Tucker mode.

Indeed, Beryl (the original name for Victorian Clara) is a great what-if.

This is gonna be so much fun.

Streambros, are we gonna watch Torchwood today? Right now? Please?
>>
>>81816003
Nah. Watch Class.
>>
>>81816077
I unironically think Class was better than Torchwood S1 and S2.
>>
>>81816148
Then you have really bad taste. Go rewatch Torchwood. Not one episode of Class can equal Greeks Bearing Gifts, Random Shoes, Meat, Adrift, Fragments, et al
>>
>>81816148
Series 1 maybe, but Series 2 of Torchwood was actually pretty great
>>
>>81816003
Why not?
Get in!
What about fragments and adrift?
>>
>>81816148
Class never got quite as bad as the worst episodes of TW S1, but it never got anywhere remotely near as good as the best episodes of either S1 or S2.
>>
Is Chibnall the one who wrote that Torchwood episode with the sex alien that orgasm'd people to death?
>>
>>81816242
Yes, and it's his first script in the DW universe.

He did get a lot better, but it took a few more tries.

>>
>>81816242
He wrote a lot of shit for Torchwood. I'm inclined to blame the concept behind the show more than him, though.
>>
>>81816548
To be fair he also wrote some really solid stuff too. I still think the series 2 finale is fucking great
>>
>The series [Class] received positive reviews from critics, who mainly praised its themes, darker tone, writing, and acting. However, it scored poor ratings.

>Reviews for the first series [Torchwood] were largely negative, with sites such as Behind the Sofa giving many more negative reviews than positive ones. Reviews of the second series were more positive. The third series, which took the form of a five-part story arc with the blanket title of Children of Earth, received a number of positive reviews. Critics described it separately as a "powerful human drama"; "Best. Torchwood. Ever."; and "... against all expectations, a work of Proper Drama".

Bill's mom was CUTE. For real tho.
>>
>>81816219
>Class never got quite as bad as the worst episodes of TW S1

Just by virtue of having a better cast even the worst of Torchwood was better than the best of Class.
>>
>>81816334
Will we see a triumphant return of the sex alien for his first series of Doctor Who

>"I tell ye to Fuck Off, wadda ya do?"
>"I, Umm.. I fu, I F- off"
>"Good you'll go far, now fuck off!"

I saw an interview with Capaldi a while ago where he was asked to comment on the political story of the day. I think it was some minister's resignation or something. He was asked to comment in the style of Malcom Tucker and he politely said no; stating that he couldn't possibly do it without the "gigantic team" of writers it takes to write the dialogue. Kinda said because that means he can't just turn it on and off, slipping in and out of Tucker mode to abuse people when he wants.

THREE!
>>
>>81816562
I think he was so much better in S2 in part because he was de facto in charge of the show, whereas in S1 RTD was trying to run things but basically not getting the job done because he was overworked.

That's mostly based on reading between the lines in The Writer's Tale and RTD interviews, so it may not be true, but…if it is, then it's a hopeful sign for DW S11.
>>
>>81816617
Rik Mayall commented in character as Alan B'Stard for a while, until he watched an interview he'd done and realised he was nowhere near as funny without Marks and Gran writing for him, and stopped doing it.
