CHRIS CHIBNALL SCREENWRITING PODCAST
10 BST ON CASUALWHOSTREAM

>>
>>81787999
I remember it was a Gatiss episode, there was a kid, an eyeball in a drawer, and Amy briefly turned into one of the peg people. That's about it - no idea what the Doctor did.
>>
>>81787461
I'd like Red Dwarf, but considering one of the main features of RD is that there's no aliens in it, it couldn't possibly work out.

But probably something like Legion where Lister and co use the amazing before it's time plan from Revenge of the Vampire Bikini Girls to steal the Tardis and get back to Earth.
>>
>>81788238
>no idea what the Doctor did.
Right at the climax he suddenly remembered what the alien was, just in time to rush the dad and his son into a 'show love in order to save the day' resolution. It felt spectacularly half-baked.
>>
You know what Doctor Who needs?

A companion who is both a sassy black woman AND homosexual.

Thanks, Moffat!
>>
>>81788465
>he suddenly remembered what the alien was
That is hilarious, I knew what happened but just focused on the stupid love conquers all ending.
I never realised that the resolution to the episode was literally just the Doctor remembering what the alien was.

1. It's well known that Sydney was either not responsible for or actively against some of the more liked aspects of the show, specifically having monsters in it, whereas Roddenberry, Lucas, and their respective fans promote the myth that everything about their creations sprang from their vision. Newman didn't really do anything to present himself as a visionary creator.

2. People don't look at the earliest incarnation of Who as the most essential version the way they do the Star Wars and Star Trek, probably because it didn't go through a period of inactivity between the first era and the most popular era of Classic Who, the Hinchcliffe/Holmes era. Honestly there's a frustrating tendency for fans to just see the Hartnell era as a prologue to real Doctor Who.

I thought GB was supposed to be the right wing Who hugbox? Wasn't there a whole article about how many people there were triggered by Missy?
>>
Typical Doctor Who episode:
>Clara sits at her desk marking answers, wearing a towel atop her head having just showered
>all of a sudden the Doctor grabs her by the arm and pulls her off
>”What are you doing???”
>”Quick! I have something to show you”
>The Doctor throws her flailing body into the TARDIS and starts playing with the control panels
>when he’s finished he looks down at her frail form struggling to gain footing and notices that her shirt is too small, exposing her bare midriff
>”Clara, I must say you're looking very… saucy.”
>”I didn't have a chance to get changed, no thanks to you!”
>The Doctor looks at the camera and winks
>he pushes open the doors and steps out onto an advanced, well-furnished space station, the TARDIS having parked just in front of a wide space-window with a view of an impressive red planet
>”Well, Clara! We’re here! We’re at THE one and only Dawkins-1 space station!” the Doctor pronounces Scottishly
>Clara stares back at him, blank-faced and unimpressed
>”DO you not even know you’re own species' history?”
>Clara moans, ”Not all of us are time travellers, Doctor!”
>”Oh yes, yes. Right. Well, this is the place, and the time, where humanity first makes its contact with alien life, on that planet right outside orbiting that green sun.”
>”Umm, but Doctor, I’m a human… and haven’t I already made contact with you?” Clara says quirkily, her big boggling eyes fixed on the Doctor
>”Yes, but well… that’s cheating. This right here is the real deal, the most important event in human history second only to the founding of the BBC in 1922!”
>just then two security guards walk in
>”Wot the bloody ‘ell are you two doing here! Cum wiv us!”
>the homosexual techno-guards escort Clara and the Doctor to the captain’s office
(1/3)
>>
>>81794660
>the Doctor makes inappropriate jokes and pretentious asides that would get him detained at a modern day airport no less at a high security space station
>the captain, a blonde woman in her 30s, inexplicably trusts them and says “We don’t have enough crew as it is and we can’t afford to leave you here unattended, we have no brig since there is no crime in the year 2154 thanks to atheism, so you're coming on the expedition with us down to the planet”
>The Doctor and Clara smile at each other, “Fantastic!”
>on the drop ship descending down to the planet, Clara walks over to the captain >“Earlier you said you didn’t have enough crew… I thought, given how important this mission is, wouldn’t you have as many crew as you could have?”
>The Captain pulls a grave expression, “People have been disappearing. Members of my crew, the people I’m supposed to protect, go about their days and then just vanish. We haven’t found any explanation, and I’m going down to the planet as soon as I am to make sure we can get out of here before anyone else disappears.”
>Clara runs off and tells the Doctor, who becomes giddy with delight at the prospect of some morbid mystery to solve, and tells Clara to go fuck off and ask the crew some questions because he can’t stand up yet since he needs time to “calm down a little”
>bla bla bla bla bla
>the Doctor and 99% of the crew disappears before they land on the planet
>the Clara and the Captain eventually find them all glued with some organic white paste to the walls of the defunct chapel
>”Clara! Thank God! But why haven’t you and the Captain been kidnapped too?” the Doctor yells
>Clara tries to free him, clawing at the cum walls in vain
>”It’s no use Clara! Its made out of titanium semen, a rare evolutionary trait! It’s completely impenetrable except for whoever made it, only they contain the necessary chemicals to disintegrate it!”
>”Who made it then, Doctor?”
(2/3)
>>
>>81794687
>”That’s the thing, I don’t know. I haven’t got a clue.”
>he thinks for a few minutes
>”Oohhh…”
>”What? What is it Doctor?”
>”I know why you weren’t kidnapped, Clara. It’s because you’re too saucy…”
>”Um, Doctor, you’re kinda creeping me out… What are you saying?”
>”Captain! Lift up your shirt, show me your belly-button!”
>The Captain lifts up her shirt, “No belly-button, I’m a clone.”
>”LINT! It all makes sense… Clara.”
>”What?! What makes sense Doctor? Wait, you can't seriously be saying -“
>”Yes. You and the Captain weren’t kidnapped because you don’t have any belly-button fluff. In other words: you’re not pregnant. Yes, of course, the first contact doesn’t happen here, it’s just the moment you first realise you’ve been in contact with aliens all along! Very intimate contact, that is… T-shirts, Clara, are an alien life-form that have been symbiotically attached to your species for thousands of years, a freak result of a cosmic accident, pan-spermia. The t-shirt aliens come from the planet we’re orbiting right now, and the male gender have laid dormant on Earth pollinating the human race’s belly-buttons, and only now, when humans finally come in reach of the home planet… has Mummy come out to collect her babies…”
>at that very moment a horrific giant monster that looks to be made of organic fibres and fabrics bursts through the door and leaps over to one of the bound guards, brutally ripping his belly clean out from his torso, proceeding to rapidly cleave more "tummy-incubators" from the screaming crew
>TO BE CONTINUED

Reminder that Doctor Who is a way to make money by selling the show to Americans and Europeans, and to improve the value of the BBC as a worldwide brand, and to sell overpriced "collectibles", not a way to make the British licence-fee-paying public happy.

BBC only pretended to care about the domestic viewing figures, and now BBC Studios doesn't even pretend.

The only way that could possibly change is if the government demanded it. Which isn't going to happen. Tories don't care about holding them to their charter. And even if they somehow lose, Corbynite Labour doesn't believe ratings are a measure of public service. And Tony Blair is never coming back.

Worldwide ratings have been booming continuously since S5. And Chibnall's little speech about what he was going to improve was all about how he was going to get involved in everything from overseas marketing to product merchandising.

You don't understand.

To fringe-SJW types, the fact that GB has a handful of people triggered by Missy being a woman, and has rules against insulting those people, makes it a right-wing site.

But to fringe-alt-right types, the fact that GB has a handful of people triggered by Capaldi being white, and has rules against insulting those people, makes it a left-wing site.

To people on any extreme, any person, organisation, or site that isn't on their side is on the opposite extreme side, and all they have to do is dig up one example of one person saying something stupid and vaguely relevant, and their belief is confirmed.

Pretty much. I honestly think it's the best episode of NewWho, but plenty of people despise it, and their reasons are valid too. Go in with an open mind and think about what statement the ep is trying to make.

I mentioned earlier about crossovers, and since you guys are talking about the dream lord, it reminds me that the actor that played him played a character in The Mist.

It wasn't a cliffhanger, it wasn't even setup for a future episode, it was a kino as fuck artistic touch to symbolise that the Dream Lord was never really gone.
He is a representation of the Doctor, and the thing is he actually won. He wanted Amy to make her 'choice' because it would benefit all three of them, but whereas the Doctor's good side would try to make it happen in a gentle way, his manipulative McCoy side would do it through harsh psychological games like those we see the Dream Lord perform.
>>
>>81800233
The Rapture did a pretty decent job capturing the atmosphere of late 90s Ibiza, which is a very different kind of period piece than Doctor Who usually does.

Beyond that, it was a letdown. Lidster is usually either pretty good, or ambitiously bad, but here his script was just tedious, and even kind of stupid. Also, IIRC, this is where the whole "call me McShane" thing started, and… urgh. Also, Liam wasn't nearly a good enough character to justify the retcon to Ace's history. (And no, he was never mentioned before, and as far as I know never again.)

The Sandman has a great villain, and properly (meaning sparingly) used. Also, it gets to do the Mindwarp-done-right thing with actual Six, when all the VNAs and NuWho episodes that try have to make do with Seven or Eleven.

On the other hand, it's one of the few Evelyn stories that doesn't do much to develop her character, which was a bit disappointing, at least at the time, because it had been so long since the last Six/Evelyn story.

Also, it's a little padded.

Definitely better than The Rapture, but if you've just listened to Spare Parts and Ish in the last few days, it's not going to come close to living up to those stories.

DISCUSSION"Feel Good" Doctor Who episodes? (self.gallifrey)
submitted 10 hours ago * by dwfan42 [+2] M H

Does anyone know any feel-good Doctor Who episodes? I'd say that School Reunion and the Power of Three are pretty uplifting episodes. There's just something about how nostalgic School Reunion feels that gets me every time. The first time I watched Doctor Who, I had never seen the Classic series (still haven't), but that one episode always stuck out for me. Sarah Jane was amazing, and for some reason I just loved K-9 so much. The episode was so much fun and somehow it was melancholy, beautiful, and happy all at the same time. Even the music was beautiful. It's still one of my favorite episodes and I'd go as far as to say that it's the best episode of series 1 and 2.
The Power of Three is a different beast. It has a much slower pace, but for some reason it works very well. It was awesome to see Amy and Rory living their lives day to day, and to see the Doctor try to stay with them and wait. I love the scene when Brian finds out that they had gone traveling during the party and the scene when the Doctor and Amy sat down to talk. I love the sort of lighter tone that the episode had as well.
Do you guys think the Pilot (s10) counts as a feel good episode? I actually think it does. Although it has it's fair share of sad moments, the ending is really hopeful and captures that sense of wonder happiness that made me like Doctor Who in the first place.
Thanks for reading and all comments are welcome! God bless!

It's 4am and I'm going to pass out, I just wanted to contemplate neat Doctor Who crossovers before crashing.

A bioshock crossover would also be pretty fuckin' neato, too.

In the morning I will take art requests. Reply to this post if you have any requests and I will do them when I wake up if they're good/interesting.

Female here. I only download FLAC.

FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange...well don't get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren't stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you'll be glad you did.

It's called "bit rot" for a reason: because it's literally rot, an organic process. The whole "cool, dry place" thing is an unscientific myth; the only thing that really works is keeping the bacteria away.

I recommend getting one of those late-80s CD cartridge drives. Then you can put each CD in a cartridge as soon as you burn it, hermetically seal the cartridge, and pump out the air. The equipment is a bit expensive, but trust me, it's worth it.

INFO DUMP

So for those wondering Kris Marshall is indeed the new doctor.Kris met with Chibnall back in December last year and they hit it off immediately. All those leaks from the Mirror and Sun were leaks. Someone leaked it out. And the reveal was supposed to happen on Monday lunch-time but apparently they weren't ready. The announcement will happen at the end of the series now.

They were going to do a mid series announcement but decided against it thinking it would take the spotlight away from Capaldi.

Believe it or not the higher ups to care about his Doctor. And they don't want to a burn another bridge like they did with Eccleston. They want Peter back for the 60th. So they gave him and Moffat a lot of freedom for their final series.

A lot of the rumors that have been speculated about series 10 are scathingly accurate. A lot of people who work along side moffat think he got too careless with spoilers during production of series 10 so a lot of stuff got out. A lot of stuff that still hasn't been leaked surprisngly. Susan is returning in the finale that was teased in the pilot with her pic on the desk. They have an actress and she was out in public on set filming. Surprisingly nobody got any pics.

David Bradley is returning. The out of order sign was most certainly a tease and the OG Bradly and tje cybermen comeback were Peters idea. Bradley appears briefly in episode 12 with the team up at Christmas along with Susan. Marshalls 13th doctor will also make an extended cameo appearance along side 1.12 and Susan

Oh yea forgot to mention xmas will be a co-Written production between the moff and Chibbers. The first of its kind.

When the shota Doctor looked in the untempered schism, he saw himself destroying Gallifrey at the end of the Time War. He tried to sabotage himself via laziness, but his inherent brilliance shone through. He tried to study ancient Gallifreyan artifacts, hoping to dismantle them and thus prevent what he had foreseen, but it lead to a disaster with one of the existing prototypes of the Hand of Omega, a disaster that killed most of his family and, coupled with his subsequent absconding with the real deal, left him a fugitive.

I dunno where the Hybrid fits in, I just thought this up back when we learned about the schism. Maybe he saw himself standing in the ruins of Gallifrey after its destruction and decided that made him the Hybrid. Also, this theory would mean that both the Doctor and the Master made contact with the last day of the Time War when they looked into the schism.

11 didn't actually get a new regeneration cycle in Time of the Doctor. Really, he picked up Frobisher the shapeshifting penguin (who had just finished a disturbing stint as a British government official in the early 21st century) and told him the plan. While 11 exploded to destroy the Daleks, Frobisher, dressed as young 11, hung out in the Tardis, faked a regeneration, and returned to his most familiar form: that of Frobisher the politician, the body he'd just left. That explains why early 12 was so much like 6 – just Frobisher mimicking the Doctor he knew best! And when he asks Clara if she knows how to fly the Tardis? He's not kidding – he has no idea!
The NuWho Doctors are actually from before the Classic Doctors, but since the Doctor is Merlin (per Survival), he can remember his future before his past. The Paul McGann Doctor that regenerated into the War Doctor is actually the Other from The Infinity Doctors.
When River Song reminisced about "her Doctor" in Silence in the Library, she was talking about the Time Lord Victorious from an aborted timeline where he became Emperor of the universe and had a daughter named Miranda.
The Wedding of River Song isn't actually how The Impossible Astronaut happened: all the episodes in the second half of S6 are all with the Ganger clone of the Doctor, which the real Doctor swapped out with before going to hide in the life-preservation spacesuit the Silence built in 1969. That explains why, for instance, the Doctor says he hates apples in The Eleventh Hour, but gladly takes a bite from one in The God Complex. Finally, the Real Doctor killed the Ganger Doctor in the real version of The Wedding of River Song

>But I do like that the Christmas special will be the first ever "co-Written production". Well, the first since The Zygon Inversion, and the 137th or so since 1963…
I'm pretty sure they meant the first time a departing Showrunner co-writes with their replacement, not the literal invention of co-writing
>>
>>81786144
Surprised how unusual this one is but:
The "Morbius Doctors" were the faces of Morbius.
>>
>>81802225
That's not unusual at all, that's generally how people explain away that goof
>>
>>81802243
And yet if you point out it's odd for a Time Lord of Morbius's stature to have only had one face, wow, suddenly the fanboys come out with their steely knives.
>>
>>81802215
But there's only ever been one showrunner/lead writer before Moffat, so that's meaningless. This will be the first time a departing showrunner:

>ends on a Christmas special
>ends with a regular series instead of a year of specials
>introduces a brand new full-time companion in his last series
>isn't named Russell

Would you write a news story about any of those?

(Unless you want to count classic script editors instead of producers, in which case the claim is untrue rather than uninteresting.)
>>
>>81786144
I find Phil's "The Trial is a Time War story" theory to be pretty compelling. Moreso than his Mind Robber theory, anyway.

Crazier: I think the Doctor erased Captain Jack's memory, and I think he did it because Jack was somehow involved in the Time War, hence how a regular human Time Agent knows what TW-era Dalek ships look like and what happens when a Time Lord dies. Remember what he says when the Dalek fleet's cloaking field drops? "Those ships were destroyed."
"Those ships".
And there's something sketchy about the way the Doctor acts around him when he's describing his backstory.
>>
Hello everyone, stopped watching Doctor Who somewhere in 2008 where Tennant was the last doctor.
Should I pick it up again? I strongly hate the next Doctor and it seems like a mess plotwise.
>>
>>81802275
If you really think about it, it's odd for any regular Time Lord to have gone through multiple regenerations. Most of them just hang out on gallifrey doing nothing, it would presumably take them thousands of years before something happened to trigger a regeneration. The Doctor should be considered a very strange anomaly for burning through 12 in only a couple thousand years. He should also be considered very young by Time Lord standards, in my opinion.

That said, Morbius obviously isn't a regular Time Lord and post-Time War gallifrey is different since everybody probably fought in the War and regenerated a bunch of times.
>>
>>81802341
Why would you even ask if you should watch a show whose main character you "strongly hate"? What could anyone say to convince you to watch it, and why would you listen?
>>
Did you like Torchwood?
>>
>>81802361
Morbius was a military dictator, he came out of a war himself. Also, it seems that Time Lords can age to death, and thus trigger a regeneration, but it takes something on the order of a thousand or two years.

Tasha Lem is River and the Papal Mainframe is the Library, pass it on.
>>
>>81802369
>Why would you even ask if you should watch a show whose main character you "strongly hate"?
I just can't stand his face pham, not the character
>>
>>81802340
>And there's something sketchy about the way the Doctor acts around him when he's describing his backstory.
I've always felt this too, nobody else seems to think there's anything there though but it honestly felt like they were intentionally setting something up that they later abandoned.
>>
>>81802398
Personally, I loved 11, but he seems kind of divisive around here. I'd definitely recommend watching Series 5 at least, it's the best series of the revival IMO, and you'll probably get past his face pretty quickly. Things get patchy around halfway through Series 6, to say the least, but the 50th anniversary also happened around this time, which is pretty essential.
>>
>>81802413
My suspicion is that if Eccleston hadn't left, that would have come up in series 2.

Speaking of story arcs cut off due to leaving early, and speaking of >>81802393
If Matt Smith hadn't left before series 8, the Tasha Lem/Papal Mainframe stuff would have been Missy and the Matrix/the Promised Land, hence "Protecting you in this life and the next." We know Time of the Doctor was his last story arc compressed into a single episode, but Moffat wanted to keep it around too much to get rid of it entirely.
>>
>>81802361
>Most of them just hang out on gallifrey doing nothing, it would presumably take them thousands of years before something happened to trigger a regeneration.
But their bodies do "wear thin". We saw elderly-looking people on Gallifrey, and heard them use that exact same phrasing that the First Doctor had used. And we've seen other Doctors aging, most obviously with Eleven.

Despite that line about being able to "live forever, barring accidents", all the other evidence shows that they do age and have to regenerate, it just takes about 10 times as long as humans.

So, the Doctor burning through 7 regenerations in only 1250 years is definitely unusual, but it's not off by orders of magnitude or anything.

The Master, on the other hand…
>>
>>81802511
If the Master and the Doctor are contemporaries...
and the Master is running out of regenerations as of 4's time...
and the Brain of Morbius implies there were 8 doctors before 1...
Then it stands to reason that Caves is the series finale, as the 13th Doctor dies of Spectrox poisoning.
>>
>>81786144
The doctor's age changes from the classic series to the new series because he started at 0 with his regeneration into the War Doctor. Probably because time had completely fallen apart by that point.
>>
>>81802340
The big question is what a "regular human Time Agent" even means in the first place.

Surely, the Time Lords would have stopped humans from developing the kind of time travel that we see in NuWho.

Especially since the whole thing is lifted straight out of the EDA novels. The novels pick up the idea of the "Time Agents" who were chasing Greel in Weng-Chiang, but now, instead of policing a heavily restricted and very limited form of time travel, they're a last-ditch defense against widespread and pretty much unlimited time travel by humans beyond the 49th century, and the reason for that change is that Gallifrey no longer exists since the Second War in Heaven. Add in the whole "the Enemy comes from Earth" thing, and the VNAs that hint at humans standing on the ruins of long-dead Gallifrey, and…

The possibility of Time Agents like Kala and Jode—or, ignoring the novels and just going with NuWho, Jack Harkness and John Hart—is exactly what worried the Time Lords and drove them to the kind of interventionism that ended up triggering a war that they couldn't handle. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Even though 50th-century humans aren't the ones who attacked the Time Lords, they're the ultimate cause of the War. And they know how the War changed history, whether it's because of the "eye of the storm" explanation that RTD gave or the "time travelers remember if they're not personally too close to it" explanation that Moffat gave.
>>
>>81802548
That's probably exactly what Robert Holmes, who wrote or script-edited most of the stories you're referencing, wanted to imply.
>>
>>81802485
>My suspicion is that if Eccleston hadn't left, that would have come up in series 2.
That would have been interesting because yeah, there's just something too blatant about it to be nothing. Why have Jack randomly bring up that he has a gap in his memory (and even have him explicitly suggest the Doctor has met him before)? And why have the camera zoom in to the Doctor's impassive face at this moment?

I'd to know how the show would've gone if Eccles hadn't quit
>>
>>81786144
Time Lords can't actually resurrect dead Time Lords from the past. Especially the Master, who, unlike Rassilon, couldn't possibly have been uploaded into the Matrix. Maybe they can grab versions from alternate universes, but we've never seen any hint of such an ability.

But one thing we know they definitely can do is timescoop people from out of their timelines.

The Jacobi Master is a pre-Delgado Master, and the Dalton Rassilon is a youngish Rassilon who's just won the war against the Great Vampires.

Of course this obviously fucks up history, especially since both of them die and regenerate and therefore can't be returned to where they were taken from. But they're fighting a Time War, it's worth the damage, and hopefully they can repair it after the War. Or maybe they can't, and that's part of the reason for the Final Sanction.

I think the reason they didn't delve into Jack's past was because RTD came up with the idea for Torchwood, not because Eccleston left. (And then, on Torchwood S2, they did delve into Jack's past, but it obviously couldn't have been Doctor-centric, so Chibs had to come up with something completely new to focus on.)

I may not be remembering all the details right, but something like this, mostly from S2:

The Time Agency were routinely, but secretly, manipulating their agents' memories. John Hart found evidence of that, which Jack followed up on after John vanished. He discovered that he'd lost not only two years of his recent memory (the memory loss he first mentioned in An Empty Child) but also all but one of the happy memories of his family (the one memory he had to sacrifice at the end of Adam). And that was the reason he defected.

Writing a script to do something that is basically useless and completely unasked for is a ridiculous amount of work too. And they don't copy-paste all posts, and I doubt the script would know how to save images, reduce them by a few pixel to avoid image detection, and repost them.

Although they did that Briggs post in almost exactly a minute which seems really fast, so maybe it is a script.
