Because this show is sincere and our shitposting is post-post-ironic, which is the closest thing to honesty there will ever be. Critics live in the state of perpetual irony, always looking for a second layer to everything they watch. They compared it to Donald Trump's rise to power and since the show shows the redemption of that character, they couldn't handle it and trashed it.

The excuses was that it was boring, but there is nothing more boring than last seasons of Mad Men and they praised them so I'm calling bullshit

What really drew me into the show was that it was constantly challenging the audience. It tries to mislead you into hating the young pope and the papacy itself and you have to actually put effort into ending up accepting that he's a saint and accepting the holiness of the position itself. The papal tiara just as an example. The show toys with you to make you think he's trying to get the tiara as a show of vanity. But then you end it up accepting that yeah this dude is the vicar of Christ, he should have a fucking tiara.

You can feel all the segments of the show that are clearly there to put off people that are unwilling to understand the show which is meta textual when the characters faith in god and the papacy is being tested, the audiences faith is itself being tested and if you dislike it, you failed.
