>>
Buchan, Susan, Chumbleys and John Simm are ALL the next Doctor

SCREENCAP THIS
>>
Series 10 is going to be the best Capaldi series.
I can feel it.
>>
I think Steven Moffat killed my dog.
>>
>>81274453
Probably the best Moffat series after Series 5 too.
>>
>>81274400
Actual spoilers:

It's a countdown of 13. And there are eyes. And a shot of someone in an exploding TARDIS.
>>
I can't remember being nearly this excited for The Magician's Apprentice.
>>
>>81274480
It's bait.
>>
>>81274489
>same old same old

That's why.

Even if they'd cockteased Davros, I doubt I'd have been as excited then as I am for Series 10.
>>
>>81274480
Why the hell would they show 13 in a coming soon trailer for S10?

Seriously. Lead me through the thought process one might have to decide upon doing that.
>>
Can anything top Heaven Sent?

No, is the answer.
>>
>>81274521
100% accurate.
>>
The Telegraph author's a GB Clara fangirl. Hype resumed.
>>
Gareth Roberts is dead, check Twitter.
>>
>>81274489
I was excited, but not this excited.
Tbh I was more excited to see Capaldi on the guitar than the actual episode.
>>
>>81274521
It really isn't, that's who's in the basement and it's definitely Andrew Buchan
>>
>>81274565
source they're from GB?
>>
>>81274400
It's real
>>
>>81274587
So is he in the basement or in the trailer? Pretty sure the basement won't come into play until later on in the series, autismo.
>>
From the screening event
>>
>>81274617
She outed herself in the spoiler thread.
>>
>>81274637
The question is: the banging on the giant fuckerino Time Lord-esque doors... they can't be the Bristol University basement doors, right?
>>
>>81274489
I was excited about potential Davros.
>>
>>81274553
what i've heard is, it's a general coming soon series trailer, but the eyes of the 13th doctor appear at the end and they somehow make it explicit in the trailer that its 13. the trailer supposedly features a countdown from 13-0 before revealing the eyes
>>
>>81274693
Capaldi's finale would therefore be at the end of the series, with Tenth Planet Cybermen. That would be very fitting for him.

>>81274637
Holy fucking fuck, the only reason you even know about the basement is that it was mentioned in an article talking about The Pilot, there is zero indication that it will even be relevant later in the series. They had to delete it from the review because it's still technically a spoiler for the episode.
>>
>>81274693
Surely they couldn't expect this NOT to leak before the episode?

>>
WHEN WILL THIS SHIT LEAK
>>
>>81274693
literally no one would be hype for that
>>
>>81274731
No way are they doing some timey-wimey shit with 13 in the basement in the first episode of what's effectively a (very, very, very) soft reboot for the show.
>>
>>81274684
>>81274731

Hmm. Two basements?
>>
>>81274760
No sir!
All 13!
>>
Radio Times:

>"At the end of the episode there will be yet another awesome trailer for Doctor Who... at the very end of the trailer there is, frankly, an enormous spoiler, a spoiler that may actually melt your brains. But I promise you, you'd be better off not knowing because awesome though it will be here, it will be even more awesome in a few weeks' time. So we're gonna give you the option, in our frankly camp and ridiculous way...

>"There will come up a warning and then there will be a countdown to the spoiler, and then there will be a warning to 'blink now'. If at that point you close your eyes and wait until you hear the cliffhanger noise, you will have a better experience in a few weeks’ time."

>So there you have it, warning delivered. And, yes, I am reliably informed that the same countdown will appear in the trailer when it airs on BBC1 on 15th April after the first episode.

>And, of course, I want you to have the same option to close your eyes that all the journalists in the room had tonight (even though, like all the journalists, none of you will choose it).

>Suffice it to say that, as far as certain fans will be concerned, it's the kind of surprise for which phrases such as "melt the internet", "OMG!" and, simply, "squeeeeeee!" were invented.

>And if we're lucky, it may just fill in an important gap in Time Lord history.

@emmacox on twitter:
>...there is a BIG new exciting thing coming up. HUGE! #nospoilers

THIS.

THIS!
>>
Just got back from the episode 1 screening. But what did I think of it?
>>
>>81274794
>>...there is a BIG new exciting thing coming up. HUGE! #nospoilers

Important: @emmacox also said it's NEW

>NEW
>>
>post yfw the 'brain melting spoiler' is gatiss' episode being good
>>
>>81274734
I don't know, I haven't seen it. But I've been told it starts with the number 13 appearing on screen, then a clip from S10, then the number 12, then another clip, etc, etc, until it hits 0, then there's a shot of a pair of eyes that are "definitely" the eyes of Andrew Buchan.

So the fact it's a countdown from 13 indicates that he's probably the 13th doctor
>>

Which certain fans?
>>
>>81274794
>>and then there will be a warning to 'blink now'.
>BLINK NOW
>EYES

EYES CONFIRMED

DAVROS HAS TWO EYES NOW

HOLY KEK
>>
>>81274924
>Which certain fans?
Fans who squee their knickers over nostalgia, I assume.
>>
It's not 13 or Susan. It's John Simm as his Master regenerating into Missy. They are tying up that loose plot thread. Susan will most likely appear later in series 10 though. But 13 being in series 10 does nothing to hype series 10 up, it only serves to hype 13 and series 11 up, which would neglect series 10.

>>
>>81275001
John Simm's eyes seems the most likely thing.

>Moff loves showing all the regenerations, hence he gave us 8-War-9
>Missy is his creation so he'll want to tie her story up in a bow
>Also "certain fans" ... fans of the Master
>Fills a gap in Time Lord history

It all fits.
>>
>>81275060
Do you want to just stop now?
>>
Read what the radio times said you retards.

>Time Lord History
So it's not 13 or Susan. I don't doubt Susan will appear. But it's most likely a prologue showing how Missy came to be from Simm.
>>
>>81275064
If it was just a familiar face turning up, why call it a "big new exciting thing"?
>>
>>81275097
Because that's how publicity spinning works.
>>
>>81272624
>in a scene which Moffat referenced in Into The Dalek and paid homage to in Death In Heaven

How so??
>>
Can we go back to the Omega theories, I preferred those.
>>
>>81275117
Also, Simm hasn't been seen now since January 1st 2010, two whole Doctors' eras ago. In that sense, it's quite a big deal.

>>
>>81275166
Exactly. I think they realised that, for Series 9, they should've cockteased a shot of Davros in the pre-series publicity. They missed a huge trick there. (And kiddy Davros would've still been an unexpected shock, even if they'd given away Davros was returning.) So they aint making the same mistake twice.

Just got back from the screening, there are

Ok dickbreath, keep believing Susan is returning until the moment you are subject to the glory of Andrew Buchan as the 13th Doctor

The shot of Dr Who regenerating is probably from mid-series too. Maybe he and Missy start regenerating in the three-part epic or something, for some reason

I can see this happening actually, it would be a unique way to reveal the new Doctor. Plus a countdown would suggest numerical value. 13? Dunno, we'll have to wait and see. Only 2 weeks.

The new Doctor is what i'd bet on. Can't see Susan returning, plus Simm is pretty much like Eccleston in regard to his attitude towards the show
>>
I've had a whole year to tune myself into the psychic network and INTEGRATE WITH ITS MATRICES

Them appearing doesn't make sense in any of the episodes.

Episdoes 1 is water monster plus Daleks
2 is Emoji bots
3 is a giant eel
4 is woodlice and a wood girl
5 is oxygen zombies
6-8 is the Truth Monks
9 is the Ice warriors
10 is the eaters of light/weird looking dogs
11 and 12 it's the Cybermen.

Only option for them to appear is the xmas episode which has not been filmed yet.
>>
>>81275905
The whole Black Sun arc is pretty cool. It's the first take on Rassilon and Omega, and the first a time war, written by by Alan Moore. The inspiration for everything Marc Platt and Larry Miles ever wrote (and for Rassilon's power glove in The End of Time).
>>
>And if we're lucky, it may just fill in an important gap in Time Lord history.

It's not that easy to find, because the backup strips weren't included in any of the reprints of 80s DWM comics, so you have to get the original DWMs or Daredevils 5-7.

>Emoji bots
wasn't that already a thing in Clara's first episode? (not counting Asylum/Snowmen) Although I could be wrong since that episode was really forgettable for me. And is it emoji emojis? Or like emoticons that are being referred to as emojis?

5-8 sound kino though
11/12 as well

Are there any official 2/3 parters? Or are they all single episode serials with one or two being connected? I miss the old format in Series 1-6 where there were two single episodes and then a two-parter, and so on. The structure was nice, and Series 7 definitely suffered from the whole "each episode is standalone" thing because they really weren't standalone and they also all ended up being rushed as fuck since there was no time to develop major stories like the Name of the Doctor or Angels Take Manhattan, which both should've been two-parters. Although, Series 7 had so many problems anyway I can't act like that was the only thing keeping it from being good.
>>
>>81276693
Clara's first episode had the spoon-faced creatures that downloaded people's souls, no emojis were involved.
>>
>>81276693
Extremis, The Pyramid, and Lie of the Land are a 3-parter.

We have no idea if there are any other connections.

PREDICTIONS

1. 'The Pilot' by Steven Moffat
>Standard light opener, a few laughs but it's mostly forgettable in the long run, while being fun to watch. 7/10
2. 'Smile' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce
>Actually semi-interesting take on futuristic emoji robots, a quirky light space adventure. Decent. 7/10
3. 'Thin Ice' by Sarah Dollard
>Comfy frost fair scenery, derailed by a rambling story. Meh characters, but good images. 6/10
4. 'Knock Knock' by Mike Bartlett
>Properly spooky ghosty story. Low key and effective, this will go down a treat. 8/10
5. 'Oxygen' by Jamie Mathieson
>Big scares and a great set-piece scene, in a tightly written space ship adventure. 9/10
6. 'Extremis' by Steven Moffat
>Weird mish mash of religion and science brings a great new villain. Classic self contained Moffat script. 9/10
7. 'The Pyramid at the End of the World' by Peter Harness
>Loosely follows a strand from last week. Odd sci-fi tale, big ideas and imagery, a real concept episode, tied together by the monks. 9/10
8. 'The Lie of the Land' by Toby Whitehouse
>Dystopian finale to the monk story. A very good story, with a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. 8/10
9. 'The Empress of Mars' by Mark Gatiss
>Shlock of Mars. 5/10
10. 'The Eaters of Light' by Rona Munro
>Great monster and a cool historical story in a poetic script. Nice effects and characters. 8/10
11. 'TBA' by Steven Moffat
>Moffat throws everything at the wall to see what sticks. Gruesome Cyberman scenes make it scary. Can rely on effective scene without worrying about tying up the plot. 9/10
12. 'TBA' by Steven Moffat
>Somehow sticks the landing. 8/10

I thought I remembered them having smiley face emoticons on their spoon heads but that episode really left no impact on me whatsoever so I must've just imagined it. Do people here like Bells of St John? The only episodes I really liked from Series 7 were Hide, JttCotT (but I understand why people hate it) and Name of the Doctor which is imo the second best finale of nuWho behind TPO/TBB and just edging past Army of Ghosts/Doomsday

Nah, the spoon heads disguised themselves as people and you would occasionally see the inside of the spoon surface with someone's face projected on.

I think it's an okay episode, it clips along at an alright pace without any real fuckups and has a surprisingly good resolution. The only ugly bit is the "le mashing keyboard for hacking" but if you just accept that as an ostentatious genre convention it goes down easier.
>>
>>81276930
I can see it, wasn't expecting such an evocative title from Harness

Will Moffat break his two-part finale curse?
>The Pandorica Opens>The Big Bang
>Good Man Goes To War>Wedding of River Song (although they don't count as a two parter but neither finale of 6a/6b was as good as the set up)
>7a and 7b had completely standalone finales so idk, 7a's finale sucked cock but 7b's finale was great imo)
>Dark Water>Death in Heaven
>Heaven Sent>Hell Bent

literally every part 1 of the two part finale is better than part 2. It's like Moffat can't help but put all of his cards on build up and hype and then when it comes to the conclusion he's written himself into a corner so it's always either rushed as fuck or some deus ex machina shit. The only time it's somewhat close is The Big Bang, which is a good episode but nowhere near as good as The Pandorica Opens.

Come to think of it, The Impossible Astronaut/Dark of the Moon would have been a great finale, but it works well as a season premiere.

I'd say Day of the Moon but it and The Impossible Astronaut are p much tied for me. Same with The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances.

2nd Parts better than the 1st:
>Parting of the Ways
ironically a finale
>The Satan Pit
>Doomsday
again, finale. RTD must've been the one who cursed Moff after he fucked up the Series 3 finale despite Utopia being 10/10
>The Family of Blood
>Forest of the Dead?
I know I liked both parts a lot but I can't remember if I thought one was better than the other. I remember more from Forest of the Dead so I'll just say that it was the better half.
>Journey's End maybe?
I sort of have the opposite problem with this two parter because I don't really care for either parts but I remember more from Journey's End and not in a Aliens of London way so I'll say it's better.
>The End of Time Part 2
but that might be mostly because it was more emotional and was cheesy enough to be entertaining, especially with John Simm having the time of his life while Tennant mopes around like he has stage 4 brain cancer.
>Cold Blood
>again, TIA and DotM are pretty much equal
>The Rebel Flesh (dat Doctor/Doctor bantz, dat fucking cliffhanger)
>Witch's Familiar
>Zygon Inversion

was there a reason why Series 1-4 were filmed in 4:3 and SD? It was 2005, it's not like HD cameras were expensive as fuck and rarely used for TV. Plus it was the BBC, I'm sure they could afford it. Fucking Torchwood was even filmed in HD while DW stayed SD. You'd think they'd at least have started in 2007/8 rather than 2009 for 5 specials throughout the year before going full HD for the Moff.

Was it because they didn't want to scare kids away by showing Billie Piper's face in 1080p?

Hm, I live in the States so maybe it's weird to me since we must've had mainstream HD first. Although, my parents waited to switch from SD TV's to HD ones in like 2012 because they're cheap af and didn't want to buy a new TV if the old one still worked. I remember finding out Survivor was going to be filmed in HD and worrying that I wouldn't be able to watch it on our television because it was standard def, but the only time the TV was ever an issue for HD products was playing Mass Effect 2 because the developers basically said fuck you if you have a SD TV and the text in the game (subtitles, menus, etc) were all borderline unreadable unless you got close enough to press your face in against the screen.

Also, it's the BBC.

Part of the reason they didn't finish switching over to all-colour until years after ITV (not to mention the American networks) was that people who still had B&W sets would complain about their licence fee being wasted upgrading shows to colour.

The slower adoption of HD was probably a similar story.

Idk your nationality but the British PAL versions look the best by far. It almost looks 720p and the frame rate is, in all practicality, the same anyways. You can find them online.
>>
I'm looking at the episodes for Series 1 and they're pretty much either elder god-tier or pure garbage/meh at best, there's no in between.
>>
>>81280660
If you watch chronologically, the bad episodes are actually still really refreshing because they are 7/10 compared to a lot of the shit from 6 and 7 and even the 8 movie.
>>
>>81280556
hm, I'm watching The Doctor Dances in the US on Amazon Prime, do you know if Amazon Prime is the 720p PAL version? It doesn't look too high def, but it's actually widescreen instead of 4:3, but I don't know if that has to do with the masters being different from the DVD ones, Amazon cropping it to be widescreen, or I just somehow misremembered it being 4:3

I don't really converse much with Whovians but I assume everyone has long ago noticed the rigid alternation of episodes: a thinky one for grown-ups, a run-around-a-lot-one for the kids.

They lost the kids before. Never again. I'd rather they alienated every neckbeard in the universe before that.
>>
>>81280784
They were always shot in widescreen. Idk if amazon serves the best possible quality although I would imagine that the source would probably be from the USA dvds for legal reasons. I only found out that the British ones look so good because the ones I downloaded looked so great.
>>
>>81280696
yeah aside from the Slitheen two parter and the forgettable Simon Pegg episode, start to finish Series 1 is probably only second to Series 5 in terms of quality.

Fuck Series 5 was so good. Literally the most /comfy/ series while still being high quality as a whole, despite a few misfires. How was Moffat never able to come even close to that quality afterwards? Was it because he was doing Sherlock at the same time? Series 6 started promising with the first half but after that it was pretty much a dud, and don't even get me started on 7. 8 was a small step forward and 9 was even better, but they still don't have the same level of quality as Series 5.
>>
>>81280906
didn't the first 4 Series come out in a blu ray box set a few years ago? Were they just the same quality as before but slightly upscaled? I can't see them looking too much better since digital resolution is fixed, so upscaling shouldn't really make a difference, right?
>>
>>81280784
they just did some upscaling filter shit on it to make it 720
>>
>>81280884
I don't think they ever lost the kids. The ratings have always been really good except when the BBC canceled the show for a year in a world without the internet. Even then, I would imagine that it was the kids that kept watching.
>>
>>81280946
Yeah the upscaling is pretty much a scam. But if amazon doesn't show that you are streaming at 720p or above, then they aren't from the blu rays and are probably sourced from the dvds of the corresponding region

Didn't watch any of the episodes afterwards even though I enjoyed the first two just cuz I kept putting them off, but once I saw peoples opinions drop as the season went on I figured it wasn't worth the trouble.

What was so bad about it? Did the writing just get gradually worse each episode or was there like a huge drop in quality that they never recovered from? I don't remember much about the first two episodes but I do remember thinking they were pretty good.

I feel like it happened during Colin Baker's run.

McCoy was an obvious attempt to reconnect because we knew him from Clive Doig shows (Vision On, Jigsaw, stuff like that) but the damage was done. It was also on against Coronation Street by then which (at the time anyway) was the TV equivalent of a viking funeral and obvious sabotage.

Ratings stayed the same from 5 to 6 for his first season. If you watch, the season isn't really any worse than anything 5 did. It's just that the stories didn't quite work. They reused all of the same ideas from 5 but failed. Still, the end product wasn't as good but it wasn't horrible. I think ratings may even have gone up. But then the show was canceled for other reasons and when it came back, they literally did not have the money or the talent to make the show good anymore and by then the show was yesterday's news. But still, millions of kids tuned in and a lot of people apparently grew up with 7.

yeah my dad's been watching the show since literally the first episode when it came out. He's not a massive fan and you wouldn't know he's watched the show for 50+ years, but he'll still watch the show every time there's a new episode, so when I was growing up I was aware of the show and the concept/characters even though I didn't watch it with him until I got interested around the time Tennant was leaving when I was like 13ish. The first episode I sat down and watched from start to finish was The End of Time, which is probably the worst fucking episode to start with, but afterwards my dad and I got the DVDs for each series and watched each episode leading up to Series 5, and then we would just watch the new episodes together when they aired. It was maximum comfy, desu. I think we started watching Torchwood Series 1 at one point but halfway through he was pretty much like "you can watch this yourself this is stupid" which was either him being embarrassed to watch a show about orgasm aliens with his son or him dropping the show after the Cyberwoman episode, either one makes sense.

Watching the 50th with him was fucking surreal, especially knowing we were watching a show that he was watching exactly 50 years earlier.

wait, how would it even be his blood that causes his immortality? Like, his literal blood? because he's like a thousand years old, right? or even if it's less than that, he's not going to have the exact same blood in his body that entire time. And the Face of Boe is just a fucking head, too.

Did they just make it have to do with his blood so they could use that in the plot? Fuck thats as bad as having Rory wait 2,000 years guarding a box for no reason and giving him no mental/emotional scarring after that, or even any change to his personality at all.

Who knows, he has bizarre rules for what shows he will and won't watch. Like my mom and I both told him to watch The Crown since it's the type of show he'd love, but he refused for months because "I was there, I know what happens" even though it takes place the year after he was born and he definitely wasn't there, but my mom said she caught him watching the first episode last night so who knows.
>>
>>81281689
what's wrong with Countrycide? It's refreshing to have an episode where the monsters are literally human and there's no alien threat at all, plus the general atmosphere is pretty creepy. It almost feels like an X-Files episode. It's not incredible, but after Cyberwoman and LesbianOrgasmAliens it's definitely a high point of the series.
>>
>>81281679
>Did they just make it have to do with his blood so they could use that in the plot?
pretty much. iirc these people like stole his blood and fed it into the "blessing" which caused everyone on earth to go immortal or some shit. but for jack it made him mortal so they used his mortal blood in the last episode to feed the blessing and make everyone on earth mortal again? I think? god just typing this out is so fucking stupid.

what's weird is RTD didn't even write any episodes except the first and the last one. it was all american writers for the rest. it was like he just abandoned the show.

Isn't that the reason why Torchwood hasn't returned yet?

I know he's doesn't wanna write any Who-related stuff anymore

idk, I just remember it being like a shitty American horror movie and having some really predictable twists that were all along the lines of "X turns out to be one of the cannibals."

THE GOLDEN AGE?

I think he always intended Jane Espenson to be the unofficial lead writer and write half the episodes. Just like Chibnall for Torchwood S2 and Ford for most of SJA's run (and like Espenson for the middle years of Buffy and Galactica, before she officially became co-showrunner toward the end of each).

Why do people went to go from bronze, silver, gold, and platinum to diamond? Have they really never heard of any other metals? Come on, iridium was discovered by a guy named Smithson Tennant.

Series 7 is the Mercury Age, kinda cool until you think about whats happening for more than a few seconds and your mind starts rotting rapidly

I really want to keep watching but I don't want to have to sit through part two of the angel story of series 5. What do I do? Put it off?
>>
>>81283011
Watch it you fucking loser, get over the fact you see the angels move and realise it's actually good in every other respect.
>>
>>81283011
why not just watch it? it's not the best episode but it's far from unwatchable, and definitely nowhere near the worst episode of the series. The first 2/3 are kinda meandering but everything after that is pretty great imo. Once you get over the episodes ruining the angels completely and taking away everything that made them scary, they're still enjoyable episodes. It's like if Aliens was made by a lesser director instead of James Cameron, but the concept of the sequel to a horror movie being an action movie stayed the same.

>>81283083
Last time I felt this way was Daleks in Manhatten. For some reason really boring nuwho 2 parters are like really shitty 6+ parters for me.

For me Blink is the weeping angels at their least scary.
>>
>>81283515
really? Blink is less scary than ToA/FaB and TATM? That's surprising, unless you're counting appearances where they aren't the main villain?

>7. 'The Pyramid at the End of the World' by Peter Harness
>>Loosely follows a strand from last week. Odd sci-fi tale, big ideas and imagery, a real concept episode, tied together by the monks. 9/10

>implying harness won't be trash.

Yeah. All they do is send you back in time and everyone they send back in time is shown to live a long, fulfilling life. Not the spookiest thing imaginable. Compare to Flesh and Stone where they're snapping people's fucking necks and stealing their voices to taunt the survivors, holy shit. Or The Angels Take Manhattan where they'll force you to live your whole life trapped in a shitty hotel and you encounter your future self there and know you're already doomed. Also I think they did a better job of directing the chase scenes in the later Angel appearances. Blink hypes them up with the famous "don't blink" speech, but they actually move pretty slowly, it's like they're barely even trying. I found the scenes in Angels Take Manhattan a lot more tense, aside from the goofy Statue of Liberty Angel. Of course, sequels always betray the original in the sense that some of the ideas are always abandoned or changed and you can't really blame people for being disappointed, but I found the changes to the Angels to be for the best.

Yeah fuck off with your 13th Doctor in the trailer Bullshit, they won't announce or show the 13th Doctor in a ''next time/coming soon'' trailer... also announcing 13 this earlier would undermine Capaldi's last series and put him in the backseat before the series has even properly started. Also Radio times said ''Time Lord history'' my bet either on John Simm or there's a revelation that those Truth Monks might be Time Lords.

What did they mean by this? Time War was basically covered, do they mean John Simm?/Gallifrey right after it was pooped back into the Time War?

Only major gap right now. Moffat wrote off Gallifrey coming back as "time lords clever lol." Leaves an obvious gap like "the singing towers" were for a while and Moffat does like to go back and fill those gaps with SOMETHING
