He fought for a Marxist group which was anti-Communist. 1984 and Animal Farm were ways of getting his feelings across because publishers did not want an anti-Fascism sentiment to get hurt. They didn't want to support Communism, but they also didn't want to encourage Right Wing thought.

Orwell was anti-Communist, he wasn't right-wing though. He saw Communism as more dangerous than Fascism. The brilliance of 1984 isn't that it's potentially applicable to Left or Right, but because it shows the attractiveness of Extreme Left or Right systems. He wasn't pro-Fascist, but he understood why it was growing. He was also clever enough to realise it was popular because it was an extreme alternative to the extremity that was Communism.

Sadly people have taken his shit as an example of how bad Far-Right shit is, when in fact his stuff is based on why Far-Left is bad. The fact it can be applied (in 1984 at least) to either is great. Animal Farm was just mocking how batshit insane Communism was.

Ever noticed how people who support Communism are either people who are near the bottom and want to be near the top, or people who are at the top and don't want the bottom climbing up and potentially over them?
