i've watched (nearly) every Fritz Lang film over the last two weeks, here's his top 5 imo:

1. Metropolis
2. The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
3. The Big Heat
4. M
5. Fury

honorable mention: The Woman In the Window
not sure many, if any, directors could make that story (and especially that ending) work

Zemeckis has gotta be low-key one of the most underrated masters of filmmaking working today. Everyone loves him yes, but I rarely see that love getting expressed. His talent is immense. Even on his animated experiments, which may have been of relative quality material-wise, but placed him as THE most technologically innovative storyteller in the world, influencing people like Cameron, Spielberg, Fincher or Cuaron to follow in his trails, he didn't get credit by cinephiles.

The Walk was excellent but completely flew under the radar, which was already a terrible injustice. Then came Allied. I don't think I've seen a single thread on /tv/ discussing it or praising its merits, when it's one of the rare modern Hollywood films done with sheer visual elegance, storytelling playfulness and respect towards the audience, and most importantly, complete sincerity without any kind of disingenuous political pandering, everything a prestige "oscarbait" should strive to be, but isn't anymore. The sandstorm scene is perhaps the most striking moment of cinematic grace and sublime in an American A-list production in at least a decade. In a morally bankrupt world where values are constantly and completely reversed, it doesn't even surprise me that this went un-noticed by the intelligentsia, it just saddens me that even on /tv/ where so-called kino lovers dwell this didn't get even 1% of the love it deserved.

Shame on you, tasteless faggots. You're no better than redditors. Enjoy your endless capeshit and other studio-driven reboots and remakes.

Recently getting in to letterboxd

What's up with all the fucking trannies lol? Half the most liked lists seem to be something to do with black people/women/gays. It's genuinely fucking annoying that to get to a list that might be interesting I have to scroll for 3 pages of "100 films directed by women" "positive LBGTQ+ representation in film" "movies where white males get their dicks chopped off"

Why have all these people been drawn to letterboxd? Where have they come from?
>>
They also seem to rate films lower based on whether the director has ever been accused of anything they don't like or if a film doesn't represent something in the way they want

Can I get a rundown of the kinos from this list if you've seen them? I like these kind of movies but i'm sure a lot of them are going to be bad

I would go off the ratings but film ratings on letterboxd/imdb seem to have nothing in common with how much I personally like films so looking for more personal anecdotal recs

Of the 90 I've seen my top picks would be:
>Massacre Mafia Style
Duke Mitchell is the greatest, an auteur of trash, this and gone with the pope (which I slightly prefer) are so much fun

>Zombi 2 + The Beyond
lot of Fulci on the list, I find him to be hit and miss but these two are wonderful, creative with the gore but also well paced and with a good horror atmosphere

>Anguish
Really smart horror that creates an hugely unsettling atmosphere and executes the use of a metanarrative to perfection.

>Maniac
One of the best horror films of all time, everything in it works and it has a horrible grimy atmosphere that is unrivalled

>2019: After the fall of New York
Super low budget Italian mad max rip off. Feels insanely cheap but it is a lot of fun to watch, Sopkiw is such a great D-grade action star. Also watch Castellari's Bronx Warriors trilogy which is on the list too if you like this

>Handgun + Prostitute
Surprised to see these on the list since they aren't really sleaze at all. Use exploitation elements in the story but are intentionally non-exploitative in how they are shown, and used instead to tell a drama with a socially conscious edge. Both very good, saw Tony Garnett "in conversation" recently (he also introduced the 35mm screening of handgun afterwards) and he's a really smart and cool guy.

>Wild Beasts
A bunch of animals take PCP and run wild round a city. Tons of fun

Bored but will happily carry on if you want more

could you go into detail about the pacing issues on Logan?, cause to me the runtime was perfect, and at no time i felt it dragged or anything.

Just my opinion, but it being the year 2029 and the cars and all looking like something from today worked well, because the film wasn't trying to go balls out with pompous futuristic imagery, it just wanted to tell a story.

And with Sabertooth, I think Logan fighting X-24 was actually a very good choice, better than Sabertooth, metaphorically and literally, he's fighting himself, whatever that means to you but it did mean something to me.

I've never been a fan of X-men but Logan was a really pleasant surprise of a Blockbuster.

Logan was alright I suppose. I haven't seen many of the X-Men movies, so I didn't know any lore/backstory, but it didn't seem necessary for this one. It was more of a neo-western than a comicbook movie.

Someone in this thread suggested The Best Man to me and I have to say that was a great recommendation. I absolutely love hyper-moralizing monologues, especially from Henry Fonda.

Landscape Suicide was superb, and a great way to top myself off to 1,300 films.

Hollywood has sold this idea that the Western is stuck in around a fifty year space. It's not. The Noir is the Western as far west as it can go. There is no limit on it. The Western is the frontier of flesh made into the frontier it interacts with. It's an attitude.

Tarantino's getting very, very close, but he'll need to drop theatricality to get there. Mann's work pushes the people but not their spirit. The image but not its emotion. It's great that Mann and Demme made Manhunter and Silence, because they're really opposite sides of the same coin, being spent on the same Coca~Cola. It's just that Mann wants to know how environments create their inhabitants, while Demme wants to know how inhabitants create their environments. And furthermore, both men are interested in audience culpability for what they've paid money to see and hear. One handles the sales pitch, one handles the sale.

>>

The acting is basically summarised as:
Bresson+Finnish Working Class Glum=Kaurismäki acting. Also for cinematography think Ozu and you'll understand his style pretty easily. And yes I know people who act like in Kaurismäki films without realizing it. Its pretty bizarre desu

Welles just got notoriety for being a radio and theater personality that was given unprecedented control as a first timer in the studio system. I've been thinking, /lbg/. You kids like to throw words like pleb and patrician around like you studied film theory at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. You'll argue over French New Wave and Italian Neorealism until you're blue in the face. But I bet not one of you can tell me how Kant's theory of the sublime relates to Werckmeister Harmonies. If I asked you what your favourite films are, you might name The Three Colors Trilogy or Hiroshima Mon Amour. You'd tell me the cinematography in those films was excellent and how Resnais's use of flashbacks mirrors our perception of memory. You'll praise Bergman as the epitome of philosophical, yet if I asked you what influence Kierkegaard had on Bergman's Winter Light you'd have to go to Wikipedia to look it up. Look at yourself, /lbg/. I don't see erudite patricians interested in advancing their understanding of cinematic form, I see scared children hopelessly trying to convince themselves they're better than everyone else. No one could possibly understand the depths of you. Yet you have the arrogance to call others plebs. Why don't you go and do something with your life instead of making everyone around you miserable?

Your move, chief.

Of course that's your contention. You're a first-year film student; you just got finished watching some nouvelle vague cinema, Jacques Rivette probably. You're gonna be convinced of that 'till next month when you get to Godard's maoist period. Then you're going to be talking about how Truffaut's shamelessly became petit bourgeois after the 60's. That's gonna last until next year; you're gonna be in here regurgitating André Bazin, talkin' about, you know, caméra-stylo and mise-en-scène. "Resnais's use of flashbacks mirrors our perception of memory"? You got that from Cahiers du Cinéma n° 97, page 98, right? Yeah, I read that too. Were you gonna plagiarize the whole thing for us? Do you have any thoughts of your own on this matter? Or do you, is that your thing, you come on 4chan, quote some obscure opinion and then pretend - you pawn it off as your own, as your own idea just to impress some virgins, embarrass my tripfriends? See, the sad thing about a guy like you is, in 50 years you're gonna start doin' some thinkin' on your own and you're going to come up with the fact that there are two certainties in life: one, don't do that, and two, you dropped 150 grand on a fuckin' education you could have got for a low ratio warning on karagarga.

>even documentary is fiction
You're retarded. Film is one of the most important inventions because of its ability to document reality. People have the most stark reactions to things that they perceive to be really happening and therefore illustrate cinema's most important artistic qualities. If what you are showing is not real or realistic then what you are showing is a fairy tale, pixie dust, kiddie fare.
>>
>>80656415
It's not an empty criticism. It points out techniques that are overtly showy and overcompensating. A well-composed static shot will always be more impressive than a camera that whips and pans like it's being held by someone with Parkinson's.
>>
>>80656632
>Film is one of the most important inventions because of its ability to document reality.
it isn't, it can only tell something from one perspective, and thus its not actual truth, it would be the same as trusting your senses

>>

>it isn't, it can only tell something from one perspective
I know you're meming, but go ahead and explain how film cannot document reality, how any other medium can better document reality than this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSwGT_-WrhE
>>
And before you reply, yes, that is reenactment footage.
>>
>>80657047
>and thus its not actual truth
The written word is perspective and can easily be manipulated. Film is real. What is more real than film? What is about to document reality better than film? Both reality and film share a symbiotic relationship starting from cinema's inception. Its purpose by Edison, Eadward Muybridge, and the Lumiere Brothers was to capture real motion.
>>
not that guy a couple of you are responding to re: the relationship between film, documentary and reality, but i think he was referring to that old chestnut about documentaries aren't really objective records of the real world due to the biases of its creators finding its way into the finished film through editing, camera work, etc., and wasn't disputing film's ability to capture reality as "it is" via its photochemical or digital process
>>
>>80658012
Then how do you know the written word is factual? The author could more easily manipulate that compared to a genuine recording of events. When you watch a baseball game, do you listen to it on the radio, read it on paper, or do you watch it live as it's being documented in real time? Oh but no, that's not real. The newspaper and some guy's book is more real than what's being filmed.
>>
>>80658189
a broadcast of a baseball game is not the same as a documentary film.

there is more aesthetic decision making involved, choosing what gets to be in the finished film and what is left on the cutting room floor that the audience doesn't have access to (essentially leaving out bits of information, reality, which influences what a viewer is to take away from the film), and an intention on the part of filmmakers to communicate some specific point or idea
>>
>>80658389
I'm talking about the MEDIUM.

You painted a broad stroke and said film to no extent can fully portray reality because its creator will always have a bias, and I called bullshit because society uses it every fucking day to record occurences. So what are you getting at, saying film is not capable of recording reality? If you're implying the written word is more valid, then that's false because it too can be easily manipulated.

Bold statement. Got anything to back that up? I assume you're not religious or even vaguely aware of philosophy.

You never answered which medium can depict reality closest. And somebody still hasn't shown their home theater.

Which profile are you and which medium depicts reality the closest?

I'll always be 5,6,7,8 steps ahead of you. I'll always be smarter than you, I'll always know more than you, and I'll always expose you fo the ignorant baboon you are.

Your pamphlet only reinstates my argument.

I'm not the anon you started an argument with. I also never claimed to know more than you. I'm not trying to be antagonizing but you seem very disturbed. Please seek help.

taking a dog shit medium like film seriously is pathetic.

Explain why it's dogshit and shouldn't be taken seriously then.

Exactly. I'll always be smarter than all of you.

Not me. Admittedly you are smarter than most, but I am actually the smartest and best in these threads

Why not?

Not interested in any of the directors and not really interested in the films otherwise.
>>
>>80665458
>watching movies for directors
Pleb. And how are they unappealing?
>>
>>80665505
Film is a director's medium.
The films aren't necessarily unappealing, but there is nothing currently compelling me to watch them when there are many other films I /am/ interested in watching. Got it, champ?

>>80665589
>Film is a director's medium.
Says who? Pauline Kael said otherwise. She saw more movies and had better taste than you.

Me.

>Pauline Kael said otherwise. She saw more movies and had better taste than you.
Her opinions are mostly worthless, though I suppose some people enjoy reading the writings of the insane. Whatever floats your boat, mister.

And who the fuck are you? What's your resume?

You don't know more than me. Even the people that coined the term "auteur" rejected it later in their lives when subsequently interviewed and said it's an outdated term only used still in the US.
>>
Exactly. I'll always be smarter than all of you. I'll always have better taste than all of you.
>>
>>80666111
Maybe I don't know more about movies, but I know what I like and what interests me and that is the director's role in the making of a film.

if you stress realism so much why do you like all these old hollywood movies? they aren't very realistic at all
shouldn't you be championing for example italian neo realism, dogma 95, and mumblecore flicks instead?
