Well, I'm just drawing parallels because both of those have Japan and Samurais. But a big part of plot in Shogun is based on Toranaga recognizing the potential that Blackthorne's arrival brings in terms of Western knowledge and technology. The Portuguese ships were the only trading caravan they knew that could bring in silk from China and Korea, suddenly there's a new ship on the block and the best skilled navigator with it and cannons with ammo to go. The five hundred muskets that were in cargo, given to a squad that can be trained to utilize them represents an immense power on the battlefield, that was previously unknown to everyone. There are many who would just stick to Samurai ruling everyone through swords, but Toranaga knows that whoever doesn't move forward is left behind.
