The color isn't even the offensive part to me. It's that it's over machined and the design lacks elegance and looks like a modded vape pen. Should have kept the sunnies full time until the next doctor was cast anyway.

Why have we still not got the 8th Doctor miniseries everyone desperately wants? Just imagine how cool it would be during a hiatus for the BBC to maybe release a small series of episodes, it wouldn't even matter how long they were as The Night of the Doctor proved a small yet effective story can work.

Yet, the Beeb made Class.

>Big Finish, at least under Nicholas Briggs’ stewardship of the Doctor Who range, has wholly embraced nostalgia as a defining characteristic of their work, and nowhere is this better represented than in the Fourth Doctor Adventures.Briggs has described the range as an attempt to recapture how he felt watching Doctor Who as a teenager in the 1970s, and you can see that throughout the five series. There’s a strong embrace of the Hinchcliffe-era gothic horror motif, but it’s leavened by a lot of Williams-era humor. This is how the same series can, for example, involve both mysterious goings-on in a quaint English village as well as the Master teaming up with the Kraals. If you’ve followed my reviews, you’ll know that I do not find this to be advantageous; instead, I think this obsessive focus on nostalgia hurts the company’s ability to tell new and interesting stories involving Tom Baker.
>So now we come to “Kravenos” and we notice something interesting: it’s set during season 18. We’ve got the Peter Howell theme, the Doctor on the cover in the red coat – there’s no question about it, this is season 18. And unlike any other season in the classic series, season 18 features very strong thematic consistency as well as a consistent visual and aural aesthetic. Even a story like “State of Decay,” which was explicitly repurposed from an earlier era, is produced in a manner utterly unique to this single year of Doctor Who. So while I don’t clamor for nostalgia, if you’re going to produce a story set in season 18 as part of a range whose very existence is predicated on nostalgia, I think at a bare minimum you should try to recapture the style of that season.

>>79422894
>Naturally, “Kravenos” doesn’t bother. It’s exactly the same Hinchcliffe/Williams amalgamation that we’ve been listening to for five years before this. And Briggs’ explanations for this insult the intelligence. Imagine, he replies when asked about the period-inappropriate music, if Dudley Simpson had been asked to stay on for one more story. The problem with this idea is that it presumes that it would ever have been a possibility. John Nathan-Turner didn’t change Doctor Who’s entire aesthetic by accident; he wanted to give the series a kick up the ass and restart it in a bold, new direction. If you watch the Tom Baker era in sequence, the Howell theme alone at the start of The Leisure Hive is a complete shock to the system. Simpson would never have been kept on for season 18. To imagine that he would have is to imagine the history of the series is false. I do believe, therefore, that if you are going to explicitly set a story in season 18, you have an obligation to embrace its aesthetic, just like you wouldn’t populate a season 17 story with dour, humorless characters.
>But that’s the point. The “nostalgia” that dominates the Fourth Doctor Adventures isn’t a steadfast determination to recreate a particular era or season of the show – if it were, “Kravenos” would not have been produced for this series. Instead, it’s a long-running attempt to recreate how Nick Briggs felt when he watched it at 16. And Briggs doesn’t like season 18, so here we are. Ultimately, “Kravenos” is just another in a long line of generic Tom Baker Doctor Who stories, but with season 18 décor cynically slapped on it in an attempt to get fans of that season to buy it.

This is exactly how I felt, but expressed much better than I could have managed.

Doctor who is fucking garbage.
It can tell any story in all of time and space and it always ends up a shitty looking celebration of mediocrity.
It's a predictable, safe formulaic children's show where the Le wacky man saves the day with some 'witty' banter and a 'clever' scheme.
The Doctor never goes anywhere in his development, just going from dark to light or dark to light depending on the incarnation.
It has no love for science or history, it just boils everything down for lowest common denominator. It's a waste of time and effort,
why don't you losers mature and watch some grown up television for a change.
You shouldn't watch doctor who unless it's with your own children but I really don't want you plebs procreating.

you guys are going through these threads quickly

>So now we come to “Listen” and we notice something interesting: it’s set during season 0. I am thinking on a different level then you about everything. Making your own opportunities and taking risk. That's truly the most fulfilling thing you can do in life. I would rather be friends with you then care how unpractical dreams can be, but my goals are set in stone for now.

>Are the Cushing movies kino?
The first one is super-comfy. The second one is disappointing (despite Bernard Cribbins), but still worth watching.

Basically, it's the original stories with the padding cut out, much better production values, and the wrong characters. They also cut out the whole Nazi symbolism, but if you've already seen the originals (or enough other Dalek stories), your brain will fill that in automatically and you won't miss it.

For the first movie, they rewrite things around their different characters and it mostly works. For the second one, they don't bother, so the actors are saddled with lines that don't work for them, and Cushing stops even trying at some point.

Make sure to watch them with friends so you can laugh at the way they get nerd-triggered by all the tiny differences, like the Doctor using "TARDIS" like a name instead of saying "the TARDIS", so you can pretend you're not also nerd-triggered.

You might thing the second one would be better RiffTraxed, but you'd be wrong.

Yes, and they wrote him out of most of the second half. But I don't think it would have helped that much if he hadn't. The script just wasn't nearly as good as the first one, and all of the lead characters suffer as much as Dr Who does.

>The sense of something other and alien was always there, amongst other things -indeed, she thought, the Doctor’s myriad aspects and attributes seemed almost infinitely malleable, some receding into the background while others came to the fore to deal with whatever circumstance required them. The man who sat now, regarding the world in general with good-humoured interest, seemed, as it were, to be a kind of personality default-setting - but just how much of this was artifice? To what extent did he actively control the perceptions of those around him? What crawling and gut-wrenching horrors would you actually see if you stripped away the levels of deception and misdirection and looked at him with a…?

I absolutely loved that book when read it at the time. And the RADW discussions that followed it—the people who thought Stone had just ruined Doctor Who forever hated the exact same things about it that the rest of us loved about it, which is exactly the way Doctor Who should be, right?

On second read years later, having read more from Stone, it's a little more obvious he's trying way too hard, but it's still a fun read and still makes you think.

>And apparently Bucher-Jones took it and ran with it
All I noticed at the time was all the ideas from Rational Planet; I didn't notice all the things he'd picked up on from other NAs along the way until my reread years later.

Anyway, taking other people's ideas farther than they'd ever dare and making it work anyway is what Bucher-Jones does best. Why else would Miles have had him write all the bits of The Book of the War that were too Miles to write himself?

You know, this scene's pretty good, and it has its moments, but overall it's a bit boring. It's just so much and so long. It's kind of inundating. I mean, you've got the parallel universe, and then you've got the Cybermen, but those don't feel like a single thing — they're two different things. And it's not that audiences can't handle two things. It's just that one thing feels and flows better.
The follow up at the series finale was definitely more fun.

>>
>>79441368
>How often did RADW go into an uproar over stuff like that?
Mostly it was just the same arguments rehashed over and over, not that often that a book inspired a whole new one, with different sides and everything.

>I can't imagine fans' reaction today if someone just casually killed the Third Doctor on Dust
Moffat casually killed the Tenth Doctor on the Medusa Cascade, retroactively making the Specials season about a whole new incarnation who just happened to look like Ten. Sure, he did that without introducing any timey-wimey, but there was so much timey-wimey going on at the time that who would have noticed?

He also inserted a whole new Doctor in between Eight and Nine. And borrowed half of the other crazy ideas from Alien Bodies and Interference, like introducing the current Doctor's future corpse and building a whole storyline around its inevitability.

And I think he gets away with it. The people who hate Moffat don't hate him for those ideas, I don't think. (I mean here, they either hate him because he's a sexist or because he's an SJW, but I mean even the people outside the 4chan ghetto who hate him.)

>or made up whole books of Gallifreyan prehistory.
But who didn't want the NAs to finally show us the Cartmel Masterplan?

Although Cold Fusion was pretty annoying, because MAs weren't supposed to do that kind of thing, because I wasn't buying the MAs and therefore I missed it…

The very first parallel universe story in Doctor Who, Inferno, had a parallel Doctor.

Well, sort of. Writer Houghton and producer Letts intended to have Big Brother-like Leader be the parallel Doctor, but they didn't do anything in the episodes as aired to make that clear. So you have to either trust their off-camera interviews, or the novels that later expanded on it.
>>
>>79453816
>that wasn't Me that 12 met at the end of the universe...it was the next incarnation of himself...she even had her own TARDIS!
Right, just like the Monk was the next incarnation of the Doctor because he had his own TARDIS. Also just like the War Chief, and the Master, and the Rani. And the Daleks with DARDISes and the War Lords with Sidrats are only "partial" incarnations of the Doctor like the Watcher.

It's not like we explicitly saw Ashildr and Clara steal a different TARDIS or anything, or like Gallifrey even has multiple TARDISes in the first place. Anyone who has a TARDIS is the Doctor.
>>
>>79453733
>Well there's only ever been 2 TV stories with parallel universes
Which 2 are you referring to?

At least the Inferno universe, Pete's World, the Turn Left universe, and the Time Lords' pocket universe were all called "parallel" in their episodes.

And beyond that, it's never been at all clear (or even remotely consistent) what the difference is between parallel universes, alternate universes, alternate timelines, etc. Are the anti-matter universe, or E-Space, or House's bubble universe, etc., parallel, alternate, neither? What about the "next universe" and the "pre-universe"? What's the "fourth universe" that the First Doctor referred to?

Of course the novels answer a lot of these questions (contradictorily, and the audios explicitly telling us the fourth universe is "perpendicular" don't help), but on TV, the Doctor just throws out these terms with very little explanation.
>>
>>79453849

>>
>>79454004

>>
>>79454018
>Is it expanded in the Target novel?
From what I remember, I don't think so; Terrance Dicks wanted to make the identity of the Leader, and the fact that there's no apparent parallel to the Doctor, an open mystery.

So I think the only place it's "confirmed in-universe" is an NA, an MA, and a PDA, if that's what you're after.

It's still worth getting the Target, though. Lots of background on Stahlman, and on fascist England, and the Doctor's plan with the reactor is explained instead of making no sense.

>there's only ever been 2 TV stories with parallel universes

Although, reading the Thrawn books, I think it would be extremely fun to see Irving Braxiatel meet Thrawn try to chessmaster around each other, especially considering Braxiatel's rather extensive collection of artworks. I like olivia coleman, and the fact that she's so prolific in the UK I'd think would be a detriment to her getting the role. Over exposure is a thing. Do you think she would bring people to the show? How many people are going to say "Olivia Colman? Doctor Who? I've got to see this!" Would she bring her own audience and built in fan club? She's a fine actress but I think it would be a similar situation to PCaps. An interesting choice for the more mature, refined crowd, critical acclaim but fucking boring for the plebs with more talk of suffering ratings.

Good analysis. Also, as much as I hate to admit it because I think Hayley's charisma and talent should be worth more than her looks, I can't deny that her being incredibly hot would be an asset for the first female Doctor (if they go that route). Her looks alone might be enough to pull some viewers in, and then if the stories are good, they will keep tuning in.

I honestly haven't seen much of Hayley's acting aside from black mirror and the occasional agent carter clips that show up on my twitter feed. People seem to really like her though, lots of chatter. I have no idea what her profile is in the UK aside from the anon that I was responding to that says shes a "Who?" over there. Most americans would say the same of Olivia unfortunately. If what the rumors say are true about a "Marvel-isation" of DW. Hayley would fit right into that and would surely carry over fans from her own marvel show. I'm not keen on a female doctor period, but I think it would be a mistake not to cast her as the first. It's going to happen anyway might as well get it over with, strike when the iron is hot and milk it for what it's worth.

They're circling what looks like a bed with crystals hanging from the ceiling. Looks like ice crystals so probably still Gatiss' episode. It's probably not entirely set on Mars.

I support of a Tatiana Maslany Doctor (if the Beeb can afford her after she won the Emmy for playing multiple incarnations of one clone).

Would you like a story the sort of Bank Holiday Monday feel, the kind of Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs story of derring-do, which I've always loved?

Chinballs will want her for the role. No point denying that.

But will she want to commit to playing a role that is literally a 24/ 7 job for 10 months a year of filming? Then promotionals etc.

So, Hayley was just announced as leading a new BBC limited series (an adaptation of Howard's End). I suppose that might answer our question as to whether she'd be willing to work for BBC pay.
>>
>>79465350
It also answers whether or not she'll be in Doctor Who. Lunatic obsessive fucks.
>>
>>79465383
Well how long until series 11 starts filming? This show might be over by then.. r-right guys?
>>
>>79465350
How long is she going to be tied up working on it though? Mid to late this year?
>>
>>79465436
Yes, I think we'd be safe. I think she's still on the table for 13 as far as our fantasies are concerned.

Interestingly, Hettie Macdonald is directing Hayley's new BBC series. She directed an award-winning episode of Doctor Who ("Blink"). Maybe she can put in a good word for our girl Hayley...
>>
>>79465514
Sounds like Hayley's new show is only four episodes, so I'm sure she'd be free if they actually wanted her for the Doctor. Her show is filming in London, so it's not like she'll be overseas this time.

Don't give up the Hayley dream yet, /who/!

Exactly. I'm a femanon and I think Hayley would be an excellent choice if they go with a female Doctor. Not all of us think she would be suitable just because we want to have a wank.

It seems to be one angry samefag who gets overly worked up over the mere suggestion of her name.
