If you're lost I recommend watching the first season again without the earth political subplot. It helps focus on the main characters, and really the Earth subplot doesn't reveal that much. We know that some people in the government are trying to start a war but we don't know who or why, and we know that Lost man is working with the guy from the UN on the Eros protomatter project, and that there is a fleet of stealth ships built by an unknown Earth faction.

Started watching this a few days ago, just finished s01e08. Mostly enjoying it but holy shit Holden is a little bitch, almost ruins the show for me. The rest is great, comfy sci fi and characters (apart from maybe the grumpy nigress) but fuck that is one awful main character. Is it intentional?

Yes. Holden is meant to make you grind your teeth at how ridiculous he is. He's all the off-the-wall romantic medieval chivalry of Don Quixote turned up to 11 and everyone loathes it, but his dumb luck keeps blessing them so they just let it slide. Since he fancies himself the modern knight-errant anyway, running around righting the wrongs of his world without being beholden to anyone, it's not like he's even playing a role, he's literally just that way. If he annoys the fuck out of you, then Steven Strait is playing him perfectly, because you're supposed to be annoyed by him.

Holden has been hiding from being in a leadership position all his life because he hates making decisions for other people, but people gravitate towards him and trust him to make those decisions anyway and he doesn't understand why, but he winds up accepting the responsibility despite it because no one else steps up to the plate or because he gets told to, like on the Canterbury when he was all hemming and hawwing about being made the XO: he didn't want anything to do with that shit because he hates feeling guilt if a decision he makes turns out wrong.

And in case you've not been paying attention, they do still look towards him, because he's the boss, but it's very apparent he doesn't want to be but circumstances have dictated he be so, and he thinks it's because he got saddled with that stupid XO tag before the Cant blew up and he was the highest-ranking survivor and no one's challenged it since. If he seems wishy-washy about it, it's because he's literally a passive shoved into an active leadership role and he's not in his comfy place about it. So he trusts his bizarre, archaic sense of chivalric right vs wrong and prays it all works out okay.

It all just feels a bit forced and messy compared to the rest of the show. It was especially annoying in the last episode when we cut from them being racist to the Earth kid for 15 minutes only to return to them STILL being racist to the Earth kid. We get the point.

It's almost as if they originally wanted an episode focusing on them entirely (which I would have preferred over this), shot it, and changed their minds at the last minute so they're giving us sprinkles of it in-between.
