Easy there cowboy, I'm sure there are still plenty of Star Wars prequel threads you can enjoy.

I re-watched the series yesterday but I skipped all the Earth politics stuff because I find it pretty boring. I think I have a handle on almost everything but one thing I might have missed: the necklace Thomas Jane is keeping, is there some significance? Or just something he remembers Julie by?

This series is cool and you should feel cool.

>>79237119
Yeah, but BSG was all of those things and it was sort of a big thing when it aired.
>>
>>79237222

The Expanse will never generate as much buzz as BSG because it just isn't as good. I'm not even saying The Expanse is bad, but let's be realistic here...
>>
Personally, I'd rather not have big threads and constant generals for this show. While that means there's a chance it won't last as long on air as super popular shows, it will hopefully mean the quality won't go down sharply.
>>
>>79237408
Battlestar Galactica also had name recognition and some known actors. People were curious what they would do with it while no one knows what Expanse is.

>>
>>79236831
I'd actually be curious to read what an "expert" thinks about this. Too smart? Too political? Not enough pandering?

This losing to Dark Matter in the ratings is sort of embarrassing, especially considering DM's first season had little more than a decent idea, 1 cheesy but admittedly cool character and a whole lot of 2nd rate sets, cringe-worthy cliches, trips to planet canada and some really naff dialogue. Season 2 was decent tho.
>>
>>79237658

>>79237661
Terrible lead. The guy playing Holden would have turned me off the show if I hadn't read the books first.
>>
>>79237615
>>79237540

She's great in the books. Much like Avasarala (Indian female Dick Cheney) they have brought her in much earlier than in the books, which I am AOK with, but hope they don't fuck up. They (the Martian Marines) are supposed to be fucking unstoppable, so I hope they play that up well. The suits aren't as impressive as I'd hoped, but hey, budget and realism.
>>
I am curious of the fate of this show.
A. gets better and goes for a long time
B. stays good and gets wrapped up neatly after a few seasons
C. stays good and gets cancelled with no series resolution
D. turns to shit and no one cares anyway

Having nine books or whatever crazy number is a blessing and a curse. There's lots of material for more seasons but it also means it's hard to conclude the show gracefully. I hate it when a series ends with no finale.
>>
>>79237934
i've read some spoilers and it gets kind of crazy around book 4

it will probably be like most tv shows, it peaks around season 3/4 and then falls off in quality and they end it
>>
>>79237934

Yeah and right now they're basically halfway in the first book. They're clearly cramming some stuff together, which is perfectly reasonable, so I'm sure they can manage to skip the plot of at least one book, if not two, but still there's a lot.

Oh, especially the book on the fucking colony, man that is super skippable. Not that it wasn't good, but nobody wants a whole season of NOT IN SPACE.

But I fucking hate the hairstyles.
>>
I enjoy almost everything about this show aside from a couple characters. I have a feeling it's going to start getting really good right before it gets cancelled. Syfy doesn't seem to allow low performing shows to stick around anymore, unless they are cheap to make

That is true. And there's not even an argument against that other than Miller is sort of the lead too and it's not the first time the lead's bland as shit. Regardless I don't think it fully justifies the low ratings. Or maybe I'm just expecting too much out of a straight-faced space-fi.

>>79239133
>Is it though?
Well, yes when you consider how ropey the 1st season of it was. I'd have thought the main complain with tv sci-fi is how poorly it stacks up to the movies (especially visually) but if anything, DM's comparative success is telling us people don't really care about that, rather something pretty lowbrow.

I don't know that it's the actor so much as the writing... The books aint no literary masterpieces but they have better dialogue than the show imo. Also the whole earth/mars relationship is much more adversarial to begin with in the show, I mean they're still rivals in the books and things get worse after the Cant blows up and everybody's blaming everybody else but the show makes them seem very adversarial towards each other from the start which the book did not imo so that might be why they're making her an ultra nationalist since the show has pretty much already set the theme that martians are very anti earth/pro mars.

liked the first season (kinda), at least enough for me to stick around for a season 2.

But the season so far is less than desirable, the bland monologues with too much sentiment and not enough plot importance, makes the show seem to be meandering at times and not grounded in good storytelling. That being said, there are times when this show shines simply because no one else is doing the space opera genre and the topics raised are occasionally thought provoking and interesting.

Just imagine if HBO or another solid financier would get behind a well done space opera with solid writing that instead of trying to pander, it would instead try to tell its own story.

In the books he goes on a rant basically saying people in power need a person like this.

The book argument spelled it out more clearly why he did it but the idea is essentially the same, instead of getting justice, people would agree with him and not only would he get away with it but they would spur his work on.

He's space mengele.

He figured out aliens shot a bio weapon towards the earth but it missed and got stuck on another inlet world in the system and they found it and are trying to turn it to their purpose.

If humanity controls it, will it make us like gods that fired it at us kind of thing. Prometheus stealing fire of gods etc etc.

have the aliens made an appearance in the books yet?

i think once this season is finished i'm going to start reading them
>>
>>79248195
Let me tell you how this works - women like that are poster material for magazines and feel good articles that women can do all these jobs men can do, and they can, just very badly and then they quit. So beyond these glamor pictures, they don't exist in the industry and they won't in the future version of shipping either. My point is that it's stupid seeing hot women on the frontier of space which would be the modern day equivalent of a Liberian ship falling apart and crewed by Filipinos. Just ain't gonna happen and makes it less believable for me.
>>
>>79248252

Well aware how it works, owned 1/8th of a fishing vessel before it was bought out to reduce a fleet.

lets say 1/10 woman are hot. In these jobs it will be 1/15 or 1/20. My ships cook was a solid 7, and so was a girl who worked every summer (daughter of another co-owner.)

I was being a bit pushy as woman really don't work much in commercial fishing, but when you are taking less physical labor, you will find plenty of decent looking woman.

No longer in it. I actually mostly worked dockside and provisioned ships with parts and food and then used my money to start buying into the ships.

To make the fleet more profitable, there was a "buyout" of ships and out of 4 ships, 2 where bought out, and a 3rd was sold to another company.

I took the money I earned and went into real estate to avoid capital gains, the market collapsed, and now I am still underwater on the condo's I invested in. Such is life.

Those are supposed to be powered suits of armour so any objection to female front line combat troops goes away - same as with the exo-skeletons in Edge of Tomorrow. Once all size/shape of bodytypes can carry that minimum-required amount of weight they'll be allowed in.

Women don't make into the west's current volunteer armies combat infantry units because even the fittest of them struggle with the minimum fitness and strength requirements. To put it in further perspective 85% of men won't make it either, even after training themselves up. It's a hard job requiring a weird mix of extreme aerobic fitness and enough strength to haul your own bodyweight + 30kg more of gear around. When most infantry leave the army their knees and lower backs are pretty much fucked for the rest of their lives from carrying so much weight around for hours at a time.

When power-assisted exo-skeletons finally get developed though pretty much anyone with the will can become proper professional infantrypeeps.

the reason why women aren't and haven't been soldiers isn't just physical inferiority, the physical inferiority is simply the most obvious and verifiable difference that stems from deeper, fundamental differences.

women are not psychologically suited for combat the way that men are. just because you can make a woman as strong as a man doesn't mean you can make her a good soldier. and even if you could make women good soldiers at the same rate as men, would that be beneficial for your society?

As mentioned previously in Expanse threads nobody said it was set to full power. It was just a trope sci-fi scene to demonstrate her strength.

Should note the servos and hydraulics running the joints don't have to super walll-crushingly powerful either - they'd have to be 2-3x bigger that what we see in the show - they've just got to be strong enough to support and assist the users' muscle power and stop the skeletal system from breaking under the strain.

Bullshit. It's just physical requirements that prevent them. The argument your spouting comes from that old 1950s 'merkin homemaker ideal - that women should see themselves as being to precious to risk in war.

We've got far too many examples from history (and currently in Syria with the Kurdish womens combat groups) where women can and will and do fight when required.

The major thing about the woman units that work are that they are all woman units, and are placed as light infantry.

It much easier for a woman for example to drag another woman then a man. Secondly they are tasked with specific missions that suit them. (non-mobile defensive fighting where you just need to keep weapons loaded and laying down good fire.)

It really wouldn't be so bad if the other characters didn't constantly refer to him as captain and boss, because he really doesn't do shit.

>Zero G push ups off desk handles? You're still moving mass, just resisting inertia instead of gravity.
go take a physics class fucking retard
>>
>>79239454
remember there's other ways to watch it. I don't have cable so I just bought the season on Amazon
>>
>>79252099
You still need to accelerate the mass. If you do it slowly, it's easy. If you do it fast, it's hard.

How hard a push up in zero G is, depends on how fast you do it.

Holden's basically an SJW adrift in a part of the system that's full of hard-line cold-equation survivalist types. It's no wonder he comes across as an insufferable prick.

you're pushing past your inertia not the objects
there's no way you're going to get ripped doing stupid shit like that. your best bet is elastic trainers or simulated g.

That's basically right, though he was also raised by anti-establishment free-love back-to-nature hippies as well, he rebelled a bit but he's still probably a few steps further left than most SJWs though he's only a SJW because he has to be. Until they nuked all his friends, he just wanted to be an officer in a cushy job with limited responsibility and bang hot chicks.

Why does miller want to fuck everything up ?

>you're pushing past your inertia not the objects
You are the object. The reason I said deck handles is that you need something to grip to stop yourself flying away. Push against the handles but don't release them, pull back on them, repeat.

You're still moving 100kg of mass, the force required depends on the acceleration.

Elastic trainers is a good idea too though and they have 'gravity' any time they're under thrust which is most of the time before and after flip&burn.

>Why does miller want to fuck everything up ?
He's a self-destructive, nihilistic fuck up, I thought that was clear?

Reminder that pornography exists for that very purpose, and you should not expect a gritty space drama to encourage a constant half-erection, you priapic moron

We have mandatory service for men in my country and women can volunteer. The only thing chicks did different was have their own turn to shower.

They're also (based on studies) more suited for submarine work, because you can give them smaller bunks and they use less air (on average)

Nice try J.J.

>why didn't they respond to Deimos?
They still can. Military operations aren't instantaneous.

You know, I like this series, I like the look of it... I like this pair of actors especially

But how many cuts does it take to show two punches? All the physicality of the moment is ruined by cut-Cut-CUT!

Thankfully the two actors sell it, but GAH!

Holy ship! All those nasty red trajectory lines. Poor Alex - his family thinks he's deaded and now his ship-waifu has more holes in her than Snow White's hymen.

it is ironic that only the mormons has a good escape plan

Camera angles and the fact that she's only really been shown alongside other marines who are probably being played by equally large people. Things will look different when we see her with some 'normal' people in the show.

>Things will look different when we see her with some 'normal' people in the show
Maybe they're building for a payoff like that?
>>
>>79255796
well she is listed as 5'11 so probably a little taller than 5'10
I guess most of the cast are midgets

>priapic
Fancy, back in my day we just called people dickheads.

Way too much gundam vibe from S2 of expanse.

>incoming colony drop
>standard earth v spacenoids thing
>a sort of military industrial complex keeping tensions high and war productivity up

Only difference is the aliens and then I guess the similarity will end once the space gate is up.

How long are we going to be teased with the martian marines? They're going to coup the ship or do something to spark a event, otherwise there would be no reason to give us their PoV so much.

just watched ep3.
Direction, cgi, script, everything is fucking great !

I think they will die while in a drop ship to show the viewer brutality of space battles
