It's...not a utopian future. I'll give you that.

It's real politik mixed with cutthroat capitalism. Not a million miles from the East India Company in space.

I swear part of it is that everyone always seems to be on edge

>everyone always seems to be on edge
In the books they literally take R&R because they're too worked up and it's been too long between shore leaves.

Also, they spend weeks in transit between every site so they're usually bored and at least somewhat looking forward to action (Alex and Amos anyway, for different reasons).

TV likes people to be on edge though, it creates drama and gets viewers interested. Unless it's over done and you just end up hating all the characters because they take themselves too seriously...24 syndrome.

What happened? Is what I wonder. It's as if it got a new set of writers that try to adapt characters.

The martian squad and especially their leader was extremely cringe-worthy.

Amos IMMEDIATELY went from a bit weird in the head and no-nonsense to literally having to be distracted from senselessly strangling a man.

The conscientious, soul-saving Butcher jettisoned a man for no reason.

guess what, i don't like that either, but if you look around the world or at least in usa media, that's the realistic future.

Also BullShitGayactica had a lot more POC and strong women cast. Were you too young to remember?
>>
>>79061319
The books are better. The show is shit. You know that UN bitch? They watered her down. This is her book dialogue.

"They’re all fucking men,” she said. “Excuse me?” Soren said. “The generals. They’re all fucking men.” “I thought Souther was the only—” “I don’t mean that they all fuck men. I mean they’re all men, the fuckers. How long has it been since a woman was in charge of the armed forces? Not since I came here. So instead, we wind up with another example of what happens to policy when there’s too much testosterone in the room.”
>>
>>79061486
The books are way better.
>>
>>79061501
In the books it's more about squats vs. skinnies. Race barely matters when everything's about which rock you're from. Or rather, race becomes something more related to physiology and birth than ethnicity.
>>
>>79059355
>The power armour is bullshit though, complete anime sci-fi shit, anything worn by a person (size small enough to wear indoors) is still going to get drilled by 50cal+ ordinance
This is partially addressed the one time the power armor and 50 cal ordinance are in the same fight together
>>
>>79061623
I read the books and I agree. So much cringe from episode one on. Naomi was a cool character in the book. Also, in the book the Belters all had serious bone deformation making them freakish tall and skinny. This is the main source of tension later on in the series, the belters can't go down the well. Fucking hack syfy garbage.
>>
>>79061064
I see where he is coming from though. I was a little on the fence but leaning towards letting him live.

I mean, he genocided 100,000 people who he had never met just so he could get some results in a short time span.
>>
>>79061339
I hope we get more of this.

Also I love the restrictions space combat puts on the characters themselves. The characters moving about the ship modifying the phase converter or whatever draws the audience in but that has to be balanced out by the fact that if the ship is doing exciting maneuvers the crew has to be secured.
>>
>>79061643
Which is funny because the books would bore the YA crowd to tears. The Belters are never sympathetic in the books, neither are the squats. If anything the book series is about how wars in space suck for humanity. Fuck syfy, at least HBO would have had the budget for accurate Belter physiology. ie. 8-9ft tall bone loss monstrosities.
>>
>>79062256
I bet she doesn't even lift.
>>
>>79062967
There are no download links, kid. This isn't Steven Universe with the mega linked to in the general. If you want to watch it then either get DirecTV or some shit, or find a torrent yourself.

>>
>>79062256
Oh fuck did they mess up Bobbie too?
>>
>>79062430
HBO would have done it better. I knew they were going off book as soon as that stupid fucking scene with the dirt in episode 1. Muh space madness!!!
>>
I love the captains speech about how he grew up fearing Earth glassing Mars and how Mars gave up any hopes of terraforming for the next 50 years just to keep it from happening. Mars being a military power didn't make much sense to me in S1 but that line about there being a trade off made it feel more believable.
>>
>>79063404

>>79058872

The arm-wrestling scene was so fucking dumb. If you really want the stronk womyn why not put some fucking 6'2'' valkyrie in those roles? That chick in the scene had arms the size of noodles.
>>
>>79063456
They have the cash, and Game of Thrones is shit because of George. Season 1-3 is super faithful. The Expanse is much better on paper. Hell, the authors even managed to make the female characters likable.

Bobbie, the martian mech warrior, is supposed to be built like a fucking tank. She's pretty much a genetic freak. Like, she isn't meant to be an everywoman. She's the exception to the rule. She's also allowed to be fucking terrified by protomolecule xeno horrors. I sear, the show is fucking trash in comparison.
>>
>muh books
GoT all over again.
>>
>>79063609
>why not put some fucking 6'2'' valkyrie in those roles
Because they don't exist or have negative acting skill.
>>
>>79063609
She's supposed to be like 7 ft. tall and built like a muscular fridge in the books. Also, she's not supposed to be gung ho. She's supposed to be straight faced and frank to a fault. She doesn't like fighting, she has to fight to feel normal.
>>
>>79063684
George is a hack. The only book in the series that tells a cohesive story is book one. Even that is bloated as shit. The only unnecessary book in The Expanse is Cibola Burn.
>>
it might be hard to find a 7 feet tall, polynesian bodybuilder actress

they're pushing the mars hates earth angle a bit too hard but, its kind of forced. In the books its mostly just banter.

i hated book avasarala, especially her early chapters she comes across a bit too tryhard
>>
>>79063696

I don't think so desu.

>>79063715

That makes more sense.
>>
>>79063782
She's a bitch but as things get rough and she sticks to her guns she grows on you. I especially like her in the latest two books. James S. A. Corey are really nailing it with their characters. I was worried after Caliban's War that they had peaked but they're out of the valley now.
>>
>>79063715
>She's supposed to be like 7 ft. tall and built like a muscular fridge in the books

>>
>>79064079
I was referencing a line from a book. The reference wasn't important though. I was just saying I appreciate your post.
>>
>>79061501
its not forced, the book explains it more, but the belters originated from a bunch of third world countries and mixed together. It's why the speak like they do any why the average belter is brown.
>>
>>79064078
She lifts.

Keep in mind that Mars is basically space Israel. They only have a population of about 50 million to Earth's 30 billion. They've only made it this far because all of their tech is so advanced and their soldiers are elite.

The Belters survive bone and muscle loss through a cocktail of steroids, advanced growth hormones, and surgeries. Think about what Mars, a much more wealthy and advanced faction, gives to their front line soldiers.
>>
>>79064113
When is that said??? It's been awhile since I read the first books.
>>
>>79064234

Requires less fuel for maneuvers, is more agile, would be easier to hide, and if nothing else it could shepherd a bunch of long range projectiles and give last minute course corrections. A squadron of smaller craft could do a strafing run and be harder to hit that one single ship.
>>
>>79067987
Humans > whatever targeting system they have on the missiles.
>>
>>79068124
Agility means nothing, a missile will always be faster. The crew can only survive so many g's and a missile can accelerate forever.

The PDC's on the larger ships could literally send a wall of bullets at a squadron and wipe them all out in a single volley.
>>
>>79068124
>Requires less fuel for maneuvers,

>is more agile,
So are missiles - more so than anything with a human onboard

>and if nothing else it could shepherd a bunch of long range projectiles and give last minute course corrections.

And missiles are cheaper, and more plentiful

Okay I'm up to the end of season 1. This is the least fun I've ever had in space. This series is fucking bleak man, hyper-depressing shit. Does it just keep getting worse every week?
>>
>>79068984
Worse as in shit? Or worse as in character turmoil and despair? I love the despair. All goes to hell and the books have no happy endings.
>>
>>79069020
He means it is not an upbeat show about happy endings and shit.
>>
>>79069020
>have no happy endings.
They don't have bad endings either though.
They just go on.
>>
>>79069020
The scary part is there are what, 8 books with more planned? Brutal. It's a well-made show, just dark, the future sucks man.
>>
>>79068236
So basically missiles are vastly superior to any ship and the idea of spaceships is completely pointless when you can have fleets of rowing missiles patrolling the system.
>>
>>79068984
Space is colonized. That isn't dpressing in the slightest.

Also I take it you fucking hated the opening of BSG then what with the nuclear holocaust.
>>
What's wrong with fighter drones thought?
>>
>>79069143
You're right, I loved BSG but it wasn't near this dark, people dying from bio-weapons and murdering everyone and suffocating to death. I did like the battle where the stealth ships destroyed the capital ship, that was pretty badass. I always liked the BSG space battles for thee same reason, it's more like naval combat.

Why don't they phone this stuff in with drones. It looks like they're pulling lots of Gs and it's uncomfortable and dangerous.
>>
>>79069392
Because people don't like ready stories about Droney McDroneface unless they're Bolo stories
>>

BSG started out with literally billions of people dying. How small minded do you have to be to not register that is immensely depressing?

Should I be disapointed that it's not in the tv serie? Because it's cringy as fuck
>>

It would make the show a hell of a lot less interesting so I think we assume they have a good reason that just isn't explained.

fuck off with ur ww2 in space fagget this isn't sci-fi fantasy
>>
>>79069392
there are unmanned ships in the books. It would be boring af to make a show based on them though
>>
>>79069392
Because they like to pretend ship to ship battles are feasible.
>>
>>79069464
>this isn't sci-fi fantasy
Then why does it have space battles when the whole idea is completely ridiculous?
>>
>>79069136
You need humans in ships due to the delay in communications.
>>
>>79069552
Dude you're going to come here and say you don't like this space show because battles in space are unrealistic? I think you should look for another kind of show if you believe that. You must hate most sci fi.
>>
>>79069629
For more complex stuff sure but you could have kill zones where the drones attack anything with the wrong IFF code
>>
>>79069682
I am sure they DO have those things. But even earth to mars sometimes has a delay of over 20 minutes for two way communication. I am sure you have some AIs but a lot of people do not want to give nukes to AIs.
>>
>>79069629
this, drones aren't capable of complex tactical decision making, they're a lot less advanced than the out of work programmers on 4chan like to pretend.
>>

No one (except for the guy who wants fighters) is saying replace every ship with missiles, we're saying that there is no role a fighter can perform that a a missile can't perform better, or cheaper, or faster
>>

TV show did better to tone her and the mad doctor down a notch.
>>
>>79069920
You guys think about this shit way too much. Just enjoy the show because it's interesting and makes you think about how space combat might work even if they get some of it wrong.

>Starbuck was not a mary sue lmfao. but hey, I'm not the one who likes a show that makes every second character black or a woman

>>
>>79069920
I could see some use of drones, but not really in a "fighter" role. Perhaps as a long range anti-shipping role of being a Kinetic kill device or a passive sensors that orbits a area and when the right ship comes by launches a missile.

But you are not going to see BSG style fighters.
>>
>>79069966
what did they get wrong? it is extremely realistic
>>
>>79061979
>she's the new jesus
No, she just celestial. Huge difference in the Mormonish BSG faith setup.
>>
>>79070051
It is rather realistic, and it is consistent, which is more then most series are.

Stealth ships are not likely, but it no biggy.
>>
>>79069678
People are saying small fighter planes in space would be "unrealistic", but ships engaging in broadside shootouts somehow are not, and if you complain about it you should "look for another show", but it's fine to complain about everything else. Where's the line here?
>>
>>79070051
I'm not an aerospace engineer or something so I couldnn't tell you, but they seem to be really thinking about what real space combat would be like. I'm just saying, arguing about whether it is realistic is a waste of time, it's a show.
>>
>>79070051
Honestly space combat would just become a shitfest of cyber-warfare trying to cracks each-others IFF codes

If you watched the show (Or even the freaking episode) you would know that it was not the usual case.

The Belters wanted to attack the station, but simulations showed that their ships could not survive long or medium range encounters with the defensive ships.

So they dropped the main attack ship with its power off like it was a object that broke its tow, claiming it was salvage so both ships could get close enough . The Anubis class did fire missiles at the one ship but Point defense took it out.

Or in modern terms, they did what islamics did to the USS Cole, get close so the main weapon systems couldn't fire on them and did their damage.

>>
Maybe the show and books don't have fighters because the people who made it didn't want them?
>>
>>79070773

Fair enough. One nitpick, though.

> Largest head signature

If they're running silent (i.e. on inertia alone), then whatever cooling method they use to vent systems operations heat would probably be bigger.

They might try and keep the heat inside for a time, ala the Mass Effect's Normady, but eventually they're going to have to get it outside the hull.

>>
>>79070908
With Epstein drives, engines are on the majority of the time to reduce trip time (which reduces logistics requirements etc.) There's also issue that with warships, it's highly likely they would be tracked from burn to burn so those going dark would be pointless since it just means you're wasting time.
>>
>>79070955
>Anyway, how do you guys combat with the fact that you've forgotten half the shit from season one? I don't really want to rewatch it.

So far nothing really matters, you just need to remember what happened on Eros and that's it.

>>
>>79070908
>>79070999
If I remember rightly (been a while since I read Leviathan Wakes) that was part of how the stealth ships needed to operate, they ran with engine off for a lot of the time - especially in the lead up to killing the Canterbury, and used a combination of LADAR absorbing material and cryogenic systems to deal with everything else - they still don't work perfectly though
>>
>>79070955
I just finished the first season today and I already feel somewhat lost, I agree, no way I'm watching this again. It's not good enough for two watches.

Also, I think they might make a lot of seasons of this since there are so many books. I don't know that I will want to keep up with this for five more years.

If the fuel has already fallen behind life support systems as the limiting factor for deployment, the lack of automated ships in-universe stands out even more.
>>

Well it's either "firing all guns on one side of the ship", which is happening in the scene, or "firing all guns capable of aiming at a specific target", which is happening in the scene. But I'm sure you have your own.
>>
>>79071218
For Earth crewed ships make sense for one major reason - they have 30 billion people to provide jobs for, I'm surprised they don't make the deck plating out of people
>>
>>79071218
??

If anything, cheaper drive/fuel costs will make it more likely it will be manned.

Were the pills useful at all, or just a psych-out?

>>79071296

>>
>>79071286
>firing all guns on one side of the ship"
But they where not. They where firing there CIWS at each other, that it. The whole point was the avoid the rail guns that the ship was to have as the "hero" ship just has missiles and CIWS. Its like saying a patrol boat flying by to get behind cover firing its AA guns is doing a broadside.

it a silly comment.
>>
>>79071342
the pills are supposed to improve focus or something IIRC
>>
>>79071286
The standard tactic in the setting is torpedos + evasive maneuvers, like a sub battle. Since the hero ship was outgunned, they pretended to be space junk in order to get in close and use the station as cover.

>>79071342
My interpretation is that the pills heightened his observational skills so he could tell if people were lying and use their body laguage against them.

If reactor fuel is cheaper than oxygen, why waste all that space and mass on life support when you could just store more fuel and extend your time between deployments?

Fuck man, you don't even need an airtight hull any longer. It could just be a frame. Imagine how much cheaper it gets to accelerate then.

(This assumes the on-board AI can do all the necessary requirements as well as a human crew.

biggest issue is command and control. You need a human near to give guidence as you can't home base stuff as it takes too long to communicate.

Also, with 30 billion people, many of them not working, it just simpler to hire people to do semi-skilled labor then hiring expert people to do command control of drones with huge delays.

Military wise, you also get to the issue that you do not want robots with deadly weapons. Heck, even a mining robot could screw up earth by flinging a nice size rock at earth.

Yes.
>Do small fighters exist.
Small one man ships exist, but there is no such thing as an Expanse "Starfighter". They wouldn't be able to maneuver any more violently than a large ship (in the books the Roci is said to be able to kill her own crew with acceleration straight off the bat with zero modification). All a "Starfighter" would be is a ship that can't move with any more quickly than a much larger vessel, but is also incapable of carrying heavy weapons like railguns or torpedoes.

Missiles have a limited ranged. Pack too much fuel on them and they can't accelerate/manoeuvre fast enough to trouble the point defence on the target. Which negates their advantages. Someone was asking if there's fighter craft here and this is the reason why - the missiles take their place. We're pretty much in the pilotless era of air combat now and this is just an extension of that.

This is space combat pretty much as it would be: depicted as a cross between surface and submarine combat. It's all about avoiding being seen; passive vs active sensors; throw weight on your missile systems; getting in range to use the bigbadaboom (railguns in this case); point defence weapons dealing with the enemy incoming; etc.

Try the David Weber Honor Harrington [pic related] books if you'd like to read large scale versions of this - his is one version of how space battles would go - they even have to stick to broadsides because of the way their drive system works (impeller wedge at one end, drive exhaust at the other). Early books only though - later on it becomes Honor Harrington And Her Pearly White Aura as she enters Space Goddess Mary Sue territory.

Should add the smallest combat ship we've seen yet is this Martian vessel. The one that the belter guy hurled his rock collection at in s1.

It's probably the smallest frame you can slap a full size, fully fueled Epstein drive on and still have room for two crew, sensors and weapon systems (2 PDCs + 2 missile tubes). The Rocinante is a Martian missile frigate: 4 tubes (with a bigger magazine) and 6 PDCs.

So I'm caught up with this fucking space nightmare show and it's pretty cool but I don't think I want to watch it every week. I'm going to wait until the season's done and marathon it.
Good points:
- Interesting space battles
- good attempt at realistic space travel and life
- Thomas Jane
- Martians
- complex plot that keeps me interested
Bad points:
- Some shitty casting
- Some shitty dialogue
- Earth political intrigue stuff is rather boring
- Insanely depressing. Everything goes from bad to worse to even fucking worse and no one has any fun, ever.
Just my thoughts on this show, enjoy guys peace

they have that in the books, to a certain extent. They don't sho it in the show because showing a bleepity bloopity display or a cringeworthy "hacker" sequence isn't good for TV

it's pretty shit DESU. In the books the power armor is basically star marine armor, not some pissweak combat suit.
