For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

Getting back into model kits after like 15 years and I bought a Frame Arms Gourai and a Frame Arms Girl Gourai because I figure they'll look nice on display together but I've noticed that while the FAG comes with decals the FA does not.
I know you can buy decals separately for some Gundams so I was wondering if it's possible to buy some for Frame Arms too? and if not what are my options here? I'd like to make both the Frame Arms and Frame Arms Girl look as similar as possible and have the same markings
>>
>>6421662
I'm pretty sure gourai decals dont exist. Your best option is to ask someone to mail you their unused fag decal sheet

Was Ein the most inept pilot in the series?

>goes on about wanting to avenge his commander
>gets consistently BTFO

>shows up as a machine and talks a load of hot shit
>wrecks the fuck out of three people at once
>even grabs Ryusei-Go and goes on about how he's gotten his commander's suit back
>doesn't do anything
>gets eliminated by Mikazuki and it turns out he didn't kill a single one of them

>shows up later as a trump card who's controlling Vidar
>was just about an even match for Chocolate, who was piloting a mech through Aloha Vagina for the first time
>>
>>6421865
Even Iok got more kills.

So just to be sure, Future doesn't need any kind of thinner when airbrushing, right?

Also I usually use Isopropyl alcohol to clean my brush afterward, that shouldn't cause any problems?

>>6421859
Does that come with the kit? I was thinking of grabbing a Zudah just for its rifle but this one looks good too.

Yep, it's the Origin Denim/Slender kit.
It comes with the rifle, the Zaku machinegun and the bazooka.

If you're using it as gloss I like mixing it with a bit of Tamiya gloss clear and thinning it with a little bit of thinner.

For future references though, if I'm doing a painted kit, can I do:

Prime > Paint > Future coat > Panel lining > Matte coat?

Yeah that's what you want. The future is helpful here because of the lining wash.

I think the mid-section design hasn't aged as well and is harder to reinterpret than many of the other okawara designs. It also lacks the skirt armor design that is more common in gundam. I like the gelgoog jager because it fixes both of these.

I don't own the new Zeta yet, but I did build the Lightning and it's so fucking good. The other anon is wrong, the Lightning Zeta is not based on the old HGUC. In fact, as far as I can tell, it seems to be a 100% original sculpt.

So like, I dunno what to tell you about the new Revive Zeta, but the Lightning is awesome and I strongly recommend buying it. It's quite poseable, has modern engineering, and doesn't half-ass anything or fall apart because it doesn't have a transformation gimmick in the first place.

Can anyone tell me what the shipping prices are like for Zoids from Amiami shipped to UK? HobbyLinkJapan are asking £30 for the shipping which is a bit much for me when the models themselves are £30-£60 and I'll probably be stuck with a £15 customs charge
>>
>>6422862
Comes with the kit, and it's unpainted, just lined.
>>
>>6422958
AmiAmi doesn't undervalue on the box, so yeah, you'll be hit with at least a £15 fee no matter what you do.
I'd recommend just going SAL, in that case, as long as the package weighs less than 2KG.
If you're paranoid, choose Registered SAL (you can change when you get the invoice).
SAL for a 2KG package won't go over £15, RSAL is probably around £25.
>>
>>6422958
I can't say for sure without more details, but Amiami will likely be equal, if not more than HLJ. HLJ's shipping costs actually tend to be lower because they have many different sizes of shipping boxes and shrinkwrap toys onto a piece of cardboard to keep them from rattling around. Amiami only has a few box sizes, so you may end up getting one much bigger than your toy, and they stuff thick, heavy wadded paper into the box, which increases shipping costs slightly.

Are you new to HMMs? You should probably be aware that the boxes are generally huge, so you need to account for a big shipping fee when you buy them. Hell, even a "smaller" kit like an Iguan or Godos has a box the size of your average Master Grade Gundam.

I just got my woundwort the other day. You are going to need to seriously wash the parts as they are covered in release agent. And just building the torso some of the pegs are REALLY tight to the point you will need to sand down or drill the holes bigger just to make them fit. And keep a bottle of plastic cement handy as some parts have the opposite issue.

It's definitely not a beginner friendly kit if you're expecting to just snap it together.
>>
>>6424027
Yup, I was gonna take extra time cleaning the runners after I gave it a look over yesterday. I'm going to paint the whole thing but I know the test fitting process won't be easy. Honestly I'm surprised that the little red pipes on it are actually molded in red. Really has a first generation master feel
>>
>>6424042
I already tried soaking my runners in detergent water but that didn't get much off. After googling around I'm going to test fit it first to work out any trouble parts and then throw it into my sonic cleaner section by section and scrub them off. Failing that a good purple power or simple green soak and scrub cleans almost anything.

Any seam welding/sanding tips for a noob?

I'm building innocentia, have 400, 800, 1200, 2000 and 2500 grit paper but whatever I practice on seems to still look scratched even after working my way up to 2500.

Is seam welding/sanding only recommended in I'm giving it some kind of coat?

Any advice would be nice.
>>
>>6424563
You want to restore the plastic shine or something? After 1000 grit sandpaper, just move on to either buffing compound or gloss clear paint.
>>
>>6424563
Ditch that 400 or use it extremely sparingly, that's probably most of your issue right there. I do most of my work with 1000 grit with 600 for when I welded really poorly then, if I'm feeling ambitious, go to 1500. I've only ever used 2000 for a few pieces I was gloss coating then rather than messing with yet finer paper I buffed it and the piece came out great. If you're sanding through the scratches of the previous layer like you should you shouldn't have scratch issues with 1000 grit and certainly not with 1500.
Anything left will get covered by your flat topcoat.

Nothing's wrong with 400 if you wet sand (which you should be doing anyway), then 600 wet, then coarse polishing compound (then fine polishing compound if you really need it to shine).

1000/1500/2000 are for when you have time you don't know what to do with.
>>
>>6424589
Yeah, only if he's having issues with scratching it's probably from doing too much with that 400 then not enough with the other grits and you know it. 600 then 1000 is simple and fast, there's a reason so many people use that range.

>>6424608
Gloss coats are really shiny, actually. It's less healthy glow and more oil slick. For that reason and due to the fact that actually paint on modern weapons doesn't shine most people just flat coat both the armor and the skin, though one could try semi gloss for the skin or mix something just a bit less flat than perfect flat for the skin if you're airbrushing.
>>
>>6424655
Read the guide (especially the parts on proper nub removal), buy at least decent nippers, and have fun.

And while you don't have to paint them, painting at least the details will noticably improve their appearance.

Matte coat for flesh, yes, and also for military vehicles, which most FAGs are based off. Going back to your previous question, if your final coat is matte, sanding to 1000 is good enough. You do not need buffing.

>>

Do you not live in America? Files are files, you can get any old set from amazon and it'll work just fine for plastic. Fines are for rough work, namely grinding down the material, you don't have to worry so much about the quality. If you want finer sanding try 600-800 sanding stick/blocks, which will remove nubs with ease.
>>
>>6426088
Just get the cheaper one.

I would personally recommend getting good with a design knife and sandpaper though. Files are a meme.
>>
>>6426098
>Do you not live in America?
I mean, I do but I also have a package hanging out in HLJ's private warehouse anyway. These should work out to be cheaper than most of what I'm seeing on Amazon because of that. Most files are cheap though, I'm more concerned about getting the right shapes and whatnot I'm likely to use. According to you and >>6426104 though it doesn't matter much so I guess I'll just grab the Tamiya set with the semi-comfy looking handles.

>>
>>6426195
>special
>for $20
Wrong price bracket. For $20 you get a good quality tool that lasts, that's about it.

It also doesn't get clogged right away like the description says and it doesn't rust if you forget to dry it after wet sanding.
>>
>>6426243
Reasonable. Alright then, last question: both of the files you linked look pretty similar from HLJ's tiny-ass thumbnails. What's the difference functionally?
>>
>>6426255
One is flat, good for re-establishing flat surface. Doesn't take too much material too fast, but still way faster than sandpaper.

The other one is knife-shaped and it cuts plastic or resin like no other. It would probably cut off a piece of plastic faster than a saw. Good for getting into tight spaces. You will want to dry it carefully if you use it with water or it WILL rust.

Files aren't meant to be used with lubrication, much less water. If you really want to "wet sand", use diamond files. These have diamond particles embedded in a chromium layer, they are essentially permanent sandpaper. You can use them safely with water since the chromium layer makes them water-resistant. They cost like 5 bucks for an assorted set at your local hardware store.

>>
>>6426297
>Files aren't meant to be used with lubrication, much less water. If you really want to "wet sand", use diamond files.
Except for when you want to file off that fuckhuge pour channel and don't want resin dust flying all over (and don't want to spend an hour doing it).
>>
>>6426322
Then use diamond files and grind away with water. Traditional files are just not designed to work with lubrication, you'll be doing more work for less returns, and risk ruining a tool in the process.
>>
>>6426328
Haven't ruined any yet.

As for more work, I gotta disagree with you there: cheap diamond files are rough as fuck, I would need to use other files to smooth the surface afterwards. Modelling files leave much smoother surface, reducing work.
You just need to be careful about drying them (unless they are coated like that Tamiya one).
>>
>>6426335
>diamond files are rough as fuck,
Yes, because files are meant for removing material,
>smooth the surface
Not surfacing work, especially on plastics

>Modelling files leave much smoother surface
Because you're decreasing the effectiveness of the file with lubrication, it is now just as effective as nail buffing sticks.

I don't think I can convince you, but please do not spread misinformation. Just because you import expensive files from Japan, it doesn't mean you need convince everyone else to do same silly thing.
>>
>>6426347
I think you misunderstood.

I bought modeling files to use on my plastic models.
When I need to file resin I use water for safety.
I don't feel the need to buy yet another set of files just so I can use them wet on resin because the ones I already have work fine and are superior in quality.
Drying them off is necessary so they don't rust.
How is any of this misinformation? It's an opinion based on experience, just like yours is (at least I hope it is).

>importing expensive files from Japan is silly

I recently checked the art on the Takara release's box and noticed that it's based on the old complete figure's robot mode rather than in the old headmaster. I'm now considering using the Nubstiny Unit 2, the Ground Type, or the Guncannon but looking at them, it seems like no torso is all that articulated and I want it to be both lanky and limber.

Are there any kits that have vents on the chest and that come with an abcrunch with decent range?

I bought it when it came out, these days it's too loose for me to feel comfortable displaying, if I look at it too hard it jiggles and the entire hip section comes undone. I was really impressed when I built it, but even transforming it once is too much.

>>6428845
I do recommend the RG GP-01. I have the Fb version, still one of my favorite kits and probably the best RG I own after the Mk II (keep in mind I only have a handful of the earlier RGs, I've got nothing since WZC).

What does it mean by this?

Still gotta wait for a bunch of MSG parts and some new hands to arrive before I can really start modifying it.

Hi /gunpla/ I haven't made a model for years, and I was wondering if there was a good Blue Destiny kit?

sorry if this is a bad post, I hope to become part of the community one day.
Thank you!

Unit 1 & the Efreet Kai are getting High Grades that don't suck very soon. Units 1, 2 & 3 have kinda lame old kits.

What are some good blogs/whatever to see custom gunpla. I remember I used to have one favorited but I can't remember the name.

Modelers-g.jp has all sorts of models uploaded from the Japanese community as well as a few US people. Very simple to navigate and there is sorting by series as well as tags such as scratch building, weathered, etc. There's a voting system to show support for builds you enjoy.

Funny seeing these posts now. Just built my tallgeese last week. Favorite mg I've done so far (though I've only done 3). Pretty fucking satisfied with it, only complaint is that one of the vernier hinges is super weak, so the rocket falls back unless I give him a forward pose.
>>
>>6429096 Here again, just getting into gunpla other than when I used to build them when I was ~10. I'm looking at:

Nobel HGUC 1/144
Barbatos Lupus Rex HG 1/144
Try Burning HGBF 1/144
Lightning HGBF 1/144

Are any of these notoriously shit or too hard for someone new to the hobby? I really like all of them.
>>
>>6429208
Epoxy putty works fine with gunpla plastic, as does styrene sheet with some modeling glue. But WEAR A RESPIRATOR when dealing with fumes.
>>
>>6429329
Those are all fine models, although I would recommend choosing one that is cheapest as you're more likely to screw up at the start.
>>
>>6428623
Looking pretty nice now. Yeah I think it works better on the sides of the knees than in the inner foot.
>>
>>6429093
I ordered some oyumaru so I might make a copy of the gun from milliput, even if I don't do that the kit comes with two muzzle brakes so I plan to use one of them to give a huge cannon to kagutsuchi.
>>
>>6429089
The only real regret I've ever had is the RX-78 the pinhead over 3.0. I was distracted by the shoulder guns.
>>
Does Star Winning have a HGBF or something similar? When I google image it I see something that isn't the SD.
>>
>>6429687
it transforms from SD to HG, but Bandai favoured the SD mode. The HG mode is pretty crap.

I'm still going to try it.

This is my first order in 15 years, does this look good?
>>
>>6429687
It has a "Real Mode" where it takes on standard gundam proportions by turning its bvackpack/fin funnels into limb extensions and revealing a smaller head while the big SD head turns into a backpack. There used to be a fair amount of old SD with this gimmick. It is NOT intended to be an "HG Mode".
>>
>>6429716
The HGBF and IBO lines are both pretty solid, that should be fine if you already have the other tools. Do you really like the Barbatos enough to get two versions at once though?
>>
>>6429756
I don't have any other tools, what would I need?

I really like Lupus Rex, and I thought Lupus would be a good practice one since everyone said I'll fuck it up.
>>
>>6429773
Whoops, I actually looked over the tool set to get to the more interesting stuff. You're basically okay but you may want some additional sand paper as I doubt those sanding sticks are going to last through all those kits though that's a simple hardware store purchase. You'll definitely want some topcoat later but that's really not a purchase for Amazon and can always be added later.

If you like the Barbatos it's fine to get two and neither kit is that expensive anyway, I just wanted to make sure you'd thought on it. You won't necessarily fuck your first kit THAT badly anyway.
>>
>>6429716

I want to make a backpack and buttflap resembling the headmaster's face. Sorry for the shitty shop and shitty photo, it was the only picture of the GM's back that wasn't at an angle I could find.
>>
>>6430145
Different anon. Honestly if the shape is that unique you will likely find the best luck with building from scratch using styrene sheets. You can get it from hibby stores or on Amazon in pack sets of same/varying thickness.
>>
>>6428994
:RE kits come with the new architect frame featuring slightly improved parts

>>6430145
what >>6430161 said. I think styrene strips would be easier than using sheets, except for the backing. There's grooved styrene sheets that looks like vents, so just buy that and cut it to size

Do I really *NEED* a spray booth? I'm spending enough on the mask, brush, and compressor.

Is it actually dried out? or is the nib just worn down to the thin sheath of plastic? If the latter you can potentially revive it by pcraing away the plastic covering with a knife. be wary that the sheath can't really be seen and at that size its very easy to accidently remove far more of the nib then is usable.

Comes across as that free sample thing you see in supermarkets with new food. Japan doesn't have interest in the brand and are unlike to plunge on the price of a full set. Selling a single one for 500 or less yen will mean they might make that impulse buy and a few of those sales might lead into sales of the larger sets.

Seems a much safer route for testing the water and hell I'd probably buy one or two on their own if I could as something to practice on and see if they would be something I want to spend more on in the future.
