For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam.

I'm really struggling to get this acrylic to not leave brush strokes. I'm using some stuff I was given by a friend to try, he does a lot of art and I just asked for some acrylics and bought a cheap ball twin set to try it out on.

Any tips for how thin I should try to get it? Too thin and it runs off, too thick and it leaves brush marks.
>>
>>6411278
Thin the paint until it is self leveling.

When using thinned paint, load less of it onto the brush. Try dipping only the tip into the paint and let it pick up the paint through capillary action.

If it beads up, it means the surface is the problem. Use a rougher primer or coarser grit sandpaper
>>
>>6411239
It's kinda funny that the HGUC Efreet Schneid is getting proper color separation for its kunai, whereas the RE/100 just got big fuckin solid purple ones.
>>
>>6411298
Alright, is there any rules of thumb to tell when painting if it is going to level itself? I've painted some plastic forks my brother had left over from something, and it seemed dramatic when I first did it but slightly less after it had dried some. Also if there are minor imperfections, is there a grit range I can use to touch it up that won't completely shred the paint? From experience I think that topcoat would hide minor sanding.
>>
>>6411300
That's because the HGUC is general release. It really does make a huge difference in how much effort Bandai is willing to put into it.

See: HGUC Gundiver.
>>
>>6411309
Wait, what was wrong with Gundiver? It looked pretty high-effort to me.
>>
>>6411307
The usual saying is to thin to the consistency of milk. There isn't a fixed formula since the consistency between brands AND colors are different. Just test on the runner to be sure.

I recommend 1500+ grit sandpaper, but you need to be gentle still. If it's raw plastic or stronger paint underneath(e.g. Lacquer) use a cotton bud moist with 90% alcohol
>>
>>6411357
Thanks. I'm going to retry tonight.
>>
>>6411315
It requires a ton of paint apps, since they don't provide enough stickers to cover it all. I don't blame them since the Gundiver has so many small bits of color as is, but painting is mandatory on that kit.

Since people seem to ask about this a lot, here's a quick size comparison between the MG 3.0 and the Origin's heads. An older MG and a newer MG's heads are provided too for comparison.

Despite all the shit it gets, the Origin's head is very close in size to the 3.0's. The differences are primarily in the proportions, with the sorta squished feeling of the Origin's head making it look smaller than it really is. Throw in the bulkier torso and you get the infamous pinhead look.

Comparing it to the MG X though, you can see how much bigger the Origin's head is than what you usually see these days.

(I really hope my phone doesn't flip this image.)

>>6411498
Actually a frontal shot doesn't really make the Origin head look bigger than the X's. Here's a different perspective.
>>
>>6411370
Actually I feel like they put in a lot of effort into the GD.

Orange on the backpack is a seperate piece and the color separation made it not as much of a sticker nightmare as expected.
>>
>>6411498
Do you have any smaller old MGs? The Turn A is way taller than the RX-78-2, so proportionately speaking it should dwarf the RX-78-2's head anyways.

I've always been kinda curious just how much heads have shrunk over the years.
>>

IMG_1694.jpg
2MB, 3264x2448px
>>6411570
Luckily I actually do. Here's the MG GP-03's head, which ought to be about the same height as the RX-78-2.

Heads haven't exactly shrunken that much as much as they've gotten... sharper detailed, I guess? When I compare the heads of my 1/100 HGs abd my MGs I always feel like it's more thst somebody made a more precise mold than somebody compressing the design.
>>
>>6411579
It's the proportions that have changed. You can see in that image that old MGs had fuck huge V-fins and large eyes/faceplates. Over time they started scaling those down, leading to the current almost barely noticeable heads.

Though BEECRAFT certainly seems to like his fuckhuge V-fins too.
>>
What was the biggest problem with you guys' first kits? I don't mean issues with the kit itself, like poor articulation, I mean things like messing up the paint or messy panel lining
>>
>>6411779
Shitty nub cleaning.
>>
A good sized box came in the mail today, what can it be? Was it the MG Rezel GR with the action base? The Gundiver? Nope it was just the Action base. That is some cosmic level of trolling there.

>>
Going to be doing my first battle damage stuff soon, not sure how to go about it. I plan on using a sodering iron to look like parts of it have been hit by a beam saber, maybe sticking little wires in certain areas where limbs have been sliced off, etc.

What else should I use? And should I bother topcoating before I start weathering it?

Also, if I want to make a block of road for a diorama, what's the best way to go about that?
>>

It looks like the biggest difference is how much they shrunk the forehead camera. Is that accurate to the Origin lineart? It seens way too small.

I'm gonna be ordering and building/painting one of these gurren lagann garage kits for the first time. I'm going to be really careful, but its my first time painting anything like this. if i fuck up, is there a way to get the paint of and start over?
>>
>>6412768
read the guide, but yes its perfectly fine, most any modern HG will work for a beginner and the IBO ones are particularly good (and cheap), so go with what you like the look of better, just know gusion is a big guy so it won't be as poseable as the Revive RX-78
>>

One of the Build Fighters spinoff manga iirc. Maybe it'll make an appearance in the upcoming GM's Counterattack OVA.

You'd think if it did it would get a regular release instead of a P-bandai one. Cause a good portion of that thing looks brand new instead of being a lightly modified Hambrabi.

At least Dualla has a kit for one of his suits now though.

Stop. Stop stop stop. These sound like newbie mistakes.

1) Realize that real-life weathering and battle damage is more subtle than you think. LESS IS MORE, 99% of people trying weathering go waaaay overboard.

2) WEATHERED =/= DIRTY. Go watch some tank/plane modeling tutorials and copy those techniques. Those guys have weathering down to a science.

3) For the love of god please don't start jamming a soldering iron in. Don't go in willy-nilly thinking you know what you're doing. You'll end up with some shitty ass shit like in this pic.

Contrary to what most people think, weathering and battle damage is a precise science, not beating your kit up and rolling it in the dirt. If you want a good result, do research on real world weathering, do some learning from other modelers on YouTube, and then go at it carefully.

I find that restarting takes a lot of motivation and dedication, I tend to just let projects linger when something goes wrong. I'd honestly recommend practicing on something you care about less before moving on to paint those garage kits.
Regardless, be sure to post your impressions when you get them. I've been thinking of getting at least that one as well.

Have I understood things correctly if I say that you can paint ABS inner frames using lacquer primer as long as you make sure to mist it on rather than putting it on wet?

It feels like at least 50% of modern MG:s use ABS for the inner frames, so I hope that is the case.

Anons I need some help. I've posted this on different boards and other places, but I'd like advice from as many experienced people as possible:

I'm having a hard time applying a good gloss coat. My gloss coats always have orange peel and when I'm airbrushing them it doesn't come out as smooth as anything else I airbrush (even the matt coats or other paints). It looks to me as if the droplets are too big.

I have this issue both with Future and with the Vallejo gloss varnish. I normally almost never end with a gloss coat (I prefer matt colors), but since the surface isn't smooth after one of my gloss coats I'm worried about applying decals on it. I'd very much like to get better at this.

I brush at around 15-18 PSI with the Vallejo varnish thinned at around 50/50 ratio (Future I didn't thin since that stuff is already watery).
Does aynone have any ideas on how I can improve?

>>
>>6414540

I would only have it so I could chuck it at people.
>>
>>6414539
You might want to consider thinning Future. Not very much (I usually only use a few drops of Windex or whatever), but enough to discourage it from pooling into beads. Also, in my experience, less is more: you want to barely mist it on at like 12 PSI.

That's what I do for the usual protective layer of gloss coat. If you want an actual shine, then just be patient about it and build up steady layers. If you don't have the time, then give up on Future and buy some actual gloss coat.
>>
>>6414570
Yeah I clean it regularly and thoroughly
>>6414598
I'll try thinning future again, but I've long since switched to Vallejo gloss coat anyway (I just prefer an actual model coating product). So I haven't really used future in a year or so. Sadly I'm having the same issue with the Vallejo gloss coat (and that is an actual model varnish).

I'll try both Future and Vallejo again and I'll thin them a lot more, then do some misty coats.
>>
>>6414604
Future's already really thin, so don't thin it too much.

Why doesn't Bandai include waterslides for every kit instead of stickers, at least for MGs and RGs? Or why won't they release waterslide sheets for more kits? I hate stickers with a fiery passion

Because the majority of Bandai's market are snap fitters who don't know how to use waterslides. Also bandai's waterslides have been shit quality recently.

Do you use the color wheel when deciding on color schemes or just go with whatever you think looks cool?

I am at least a fan of combinations like blue and orange, purple and yellow, and I believe they are complimentary colors.
>>
>>6415393
Pretty sure Blue and Orange are. That's also the color scheme of the Blue Astray.
>>
>>6415393

I think the most important thing is where you use them, there are 10 million different color combos from actual gundam designs to try out, so you don't need to overthink that part. Almost any scheme has been used by a real design at some point, it's hard to go wrong there. Much easier to make a particular kit look bad by putting too much of one color vs. another etc.

I seem to have a preference towards not using too many colors on a kit, the standard gundam colors of white, yellow, red and blue is at least one color too many for my taste.

>>6415397

Yeah I was thinking of using something similar for my blitz, though the astray has a really pale orange so I'm probably going to use a more vibrant orange as well as a darker blue in order to make it a little different.
>>

you're spreading things out too much to try and make things "balanced" or something

most gundams arent done that way for a reason, blocks of color and accents are the way to go

because Bandai has designed its products in such a way that it could be someone's first kit, not just first GunPla, but any kit for that matter.

It's also the same reason Kawaguchi gave recently for why Bandai doesn't do undergates. Because Undergates are rare and not the norm for model kits outside of this niche.
>>
>>6416017
That's a really shitty reason to make us all deal with bad nubs. Undergates are pretty self explanatory.
>>
>>6416017
>We decided to make things harder by not undergating because your first kit should be annoying and close to the norm but used the opposite logic for using stickers over waterslides.
Just tell us you don't want to pay for it, you fucks.
>>
>>6416049
It's not like it'd cost anything more to produce, they just have to say "Hey engineer-san, when you design how the parts are attached to runners put the gates on the undersides"
>>
>>6416051
Design cost is the only semi-valid reason I can think of for them not doing exactly that. I don't know how difficult or expensive the engineering is (though I'd imagine not very but that's me talking out of my ass) the excuse posted here is pretty high order bullshit.
>>
>>6416057
Well I imagine first the parts are designed, and then they have someone design runners containing them. And while it's more complicated than just pasting the parts on to a frame willy nilly - you have to make sure the plastic fills adequately and evenly - making sure all those parts are connected at places that won't be visible is maybe like 5% more trouble. Once in the production phase the extra cost is nothing.
>>
>>6415436
Tried both close to the piece with fine spray and a wet coat and tried far away from the piece with both a fine mist and a wet coat.
>>
>>6416051
It absolutely does, but not at the phase you're thinking of. Undergating things makes the QC portion much more of a pain in the ass because shit is much more liable to go wrong when you start making all of the gates bend at weird angles to avoid showing up.

A lot of people don't seem to fully realize this, but Bandai mass produces the ever loving fuck out of their kits. Any cost on the design phase is eclipsed by whatever costs there are on the production phase. That's why it's so important to minimize any sort of risk whatsoever.
>>
>>6415817
>>6415819
Make sure the runner says PC-7 and not PC-123. 123 sizes are a little smaller than 7's.

Can't wait for the wave of non customizers to slam this thing since it's a pretty bad straight build.
>>
>>6416185
With third party kits, I just wish they wouldn't even bother with inner frames. It's not like there's ever that much done with them, and if the parts fitting and color separation are going to be awful anyways I'd rather just have less pieces overall to work with.
>>
>>6416189
I couldn't disagree more. Frames are important for making a kit not feel like a cheap hollow toy in your hands. Even if it's still light plastic, you can at least feel that it's something solid.

depends on the kits and how much of the kits you are spraying, as well as how efficient you are in the spraying. But look at one full HG kit getting maximum base coat coverage from a can of Tamiya. Their primer on the other hand is much better for price and models you can cover with it.

I personally am waiting on a second can to finish up my Berserk Fuhrer, but that is a lot of coverage compared to a gunpla. I got the body, arms completely done and the tail has a incomplete coverage, needs just one more layer. Legs however are untouched.
>>
>>6416192
Naw you can feel that they're not as solid as MGs, especially in the joints being polycaps. Weight distribution is also kinda funky, like in the Bawoo
>>
>>6416415

bawoo has always had weird weight distribution because of the design
>>
>>6416191

> Frames are important for making a kit not feel like a cheap hollow toy in your hands.

Models typically are very light. Toys exclusively need to be chunkier like that.
>>
>>6416420
I'm not talking about the weight, but the feeling that something is hollow. You can just tell when you're handling something. It's hard to describe verbally but you know what I mean.
>>
>>6416313

What colors did you go with? I have it in my backlog but I haven't decided on any colors.

>>6416191
The frame is very unnecessary on the woundwort dude. There's unnecessary levels of parts separation on this similar to kotobukiya zoids, but it's worse. The cockpit sear for instance isn't tabbed onto anything, and the collar is held on only by friction.
>>
>>6416475
With third party kits you have to give up on assuming an OOB build will go well. Break out the glue and get ready to reshape some pieces.

I am being VERY goofy and went with coral blue thinking of a vintage 50s turquoise color. I probably should have looked into figuring out how to paint the inner 'frame' chrome or something like that. Or maybe its just all the black being exposed from being half complete making things look weird.

Or it could be like another anon up thread mentioned and he is just completely the wrong shape for that color. But I decided to color his armor because I plan on only buying the upcoming Sturm Tyrann armor pack (if they sell just the armor separately like they did with Liger Zero), so I pretty much needed to choose a spray can since I don't airbrush.

acrylic topcoats work fine over gundam marker. Lacquer topcoats will eat panel lines done with gundam marker.

Your problem is you are using gundam markers which are complete shit if you want to paint or topcoat. Go invest in some copic modeller pens for panel lining, they can be topcoated with anything.

Don't just do that! Tell me what to do with it! Show me how!
Before Gundam my exposure to model kits would be the annual aircraft (usually Snap-Fit) and for the rare few that were actual kits (and for many a long Gundam year after those) I saw the thinner bottle as nothing but a brush cleaner.
Hell, my first airbrush I used unthinned Testor's enamel! I had no fucking idea what I was doing beyond making them look better than bare plastic & stickers!

This (on the right) was the defective part. Apart from that it's an unofficial third party kit, so just don't go into the build expecting Bandai or Koto levels of quality and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the picture and description man, very helpfull. A bit of styrene rod and epoxy putty should sort that out. Part of the fun of a 3rd party kit for me is the extra work you have to put in. Still thats a pretty big oversight on cutecube's part

Working on a RE/100 nightingale. Got the new shoulders molded today and am just working them to be fully blended now. I am also extending the front peak of the chest foward to exaggerate that. Dong progress is still really early.
>>
>>6419036
for the extensions, do you just attatch some epoxy putty at the ends, shape it to what you want, and sand it when dried? looks awesome
>>
>>6419041

First I cut them out of notecard because you have to get lots of curves right, then out of very thin styrene. THen I used 3 beams under the edge and laid the thin sheet over the top of them to give the sheet strength. Then epoxy putty over the top and bottom of that. This both gives it strength, and you know when the things are the same size when you can see the edges of the styrene peeking through when you sand down.

Regular plastic cement melts Little Armory plastic like butter.
You only need 1/4 of the cement you think you need to glue it.

I built the Ball ver. Ka a year ago and I'm still amazed at how well it holds up. The kit's aged like fine wine.

Shit, seriously? I just bought some Tamiya extra thin cement to glue a Little Armory kit together, and now I'm scared of fucking it up. And tips aside from using 1/4 of the cement I think I'll need?
>>
Anons how do you paint your inner frames? Do you paint the individual pieces or do you assemble the inner frame and then paint it like that? (like completed arms/legs, etc)
>>
>>6419380

Half assembled. Split it up based on the moving parts. No reason not to paint assembled if there are no moving parts involved.

If you are going to paint parts and then assemble, mask all the pegs/holes/contact points because there are no tolerances.

[shill=on]
You can also upgrade your cement to pic related, it is much easier to glue small parts with (you can still fuck it up if you put to much)

Just use the color guides and then pick something close sounding in Tamiya. Assuming you can't read japanese:

>Black: Midnight Blue (100%)
>Red: Monza Red (80%) + White (10%) + Yellow (5%) + Neutral Gray (5%)
>Yellow: Yellow (45%) + White (35%) + Orange (20%)

The only tough bit is the tan, since the RX-78-2's Real Type color scheme has typically used a shade of gray instead. But the Zaku Cannon's tan looks close enough so:

>Tan: Skintone (65%) + White (30%) + Neutral Gray (5%)
>>
>>6420512
>Green: Green (35%) + White (30%) + Black (25%) + Olive Drab (10%)

Two giant cardboard boxes stacked full and overflowing with more kits. I know you can buy decals separately for some Gundams so I was wondering if it's possible to buy some for Frame Arms too? and if not what are my options here? I'd like to make both the Frame Arms and Frame Arms Girl look as similar as possible and have the same markings
