For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***
So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.
This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

Hey /toy/, I normally build scale military models, but was given a bandai Eva Unit 01 as a gift for christmas. How do you file out the ends that you cut the pieces out from the spruce? Normally on tanks I would use a regular file, and it would be painted so the scratch marks are no longer visible but when I try to file down the nubs it still looks pretty ugly.
>>6096409
?Its the same thing, just prime and paint it.
Maybe because grey hides the nub marks better
>>6096424
Oh ok, honestly I wasn't even all that sure if you painted those kind of models, since they're in the proper colors already.
>>6096409
High grit sand paper, same as any other plamo.
And unless its those early rubber suit eva kits you should be able to paint it the same as any other model kit.
>>6096427
Its your kit, do what you want with it. Bandai molds stuff in color to hit the wider market and so that they can advertise it as not needing paint. A proper paint job will always look better than bare colored plastic though, just look at the one in the OP image.
>>6096336
If you saw them... Good for me though, as it keeps the little bit of seam line that remains out of view as well.
Now for the question of whether I can be assed with a dot filter or not.
>>6095935
Nice, thanks for using my kit for the OP, GG
>>6096409
>>6096430
Like that guy said, everything comes pre-colored, with newer kits in more proper colors, but painting is always good. Sometimes I wonder why I clean up so much when I'm just gonna paint as well, but it's a habit at this point. For an example, here's what it could look OOB, with some topcoat, painted details, and bad weathering, to painted with bad weathering.
>>6096362
what conversion parts?
>>6096514
the painted one has airbrushed shading right? wish i didnt buy a single action brush now.
>>6096619
Yeah, it's airbrushed shading. It's the main reason I wanted an airbrush in the first place, to get that effect. Don't count it out as a bad purchase just yet though. I wouldn't mind a second airbrush just for priming and gloss/matte coats which would be perfectly fine with a single action because the less hassle of clean up between changing colors, the better. Of course, that's a super luxury.
>>6096596
New option set (out in march iirc). Comes with landman rodi legs.
It also comes with ground type graze and geirail schwarmalurmadingdong parts, excluding the shoulders which are in a previous option set (you have to buy two though).
Finally got around to putting these shits together.
Panel lined. Plan to matte coat.

Boom. This guy is actually pretty well articulated.
For example, Ironman landing pose.

I've been looking at the Portent, and I know the torso and general green parts (not the GN drives segments) are a more mint green compared to what it is in BF Try.
I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on a Mr. Color paint to make it appear more like its supposed to. I feel the base Mr. Color Green is a bit too much, but I'm not sure on the exact mixture of two colors.
Maybe a 20% White and 80% Green for Mr. Color?
Any help is appreciated.

>>6096879
I was about to ask that as well.
>>6096828
The joints are kind of scary especially because the plastic is a bit softer than gunpla. Instead of polycaps they are all the same plastic friction jointed together. So, while it does have great articulation, I pose with caution one joint at a time.
>>6096879
Hahaha, moving to a new place and have a handy to do list for the week. And fuck yeah I did!
>>6096925
I should clairfy that the joints are sufficiently tight without being stuck or wobbly. Though, they will likely become more loose over time.

nothing to do with the plastic, anon's talking about kits with vac-metal coatings.
Fucking finally. I can wash my hands of this fucking thing.
>>6097487
Depends. Some forms of weathering will change the "glossiness" of the model. Paints used to make oil stains and such will probably add a very gloss texture. Pigments dusted on will be completely matte and, well, dusty. Slapping on a coat on top of it will take away all that.
On the other hand, if your weathering didn't do that kind of thing, then there's no texture variety to loose.
>>6097757
Vac-Metal? Sounds like an eighties hair band. What's the problem with the coating? I bought and shipped a good friend of mine the shiny gold Shiki, is that gone to be a regret now?
I couldn't be arsed with the dot filter in the end, and the plastic was starting to complain about white spirits overdose as it was. So this'll be done.
While a kit for the AS-5E3 Leynos I don't have any interest there, so instead I've made it up as a "real world" what if. So I give you Stormkanonkyrass 431.
>With the Lüshunkou incident making ti clear that a generation shift was happening in mechs, and along with worldwide heightened tensions, the army put out a request for a new mech to replace the old Infanterikyrass 103 "Ymer", delivery ASAP. As a result few expected much more than a stopgap, but largely thanks to the newly developed SSAB-Gustavsberg composite armour becoming available Landsverk and Hägglunds-Bofors both managed to produce very solid designs, in both cases mostly held back by being somewhat sluggish since nothign more powerful than the Siemens PR3 reactor was available at the time. The Hägglunds-Bofors design won over the very cutting edge Landsverk design as it was considered a more balanced approach between technological maturity and future-proofing, and was adopted as Infanterikyrass 104 "Frej".
>Two years later the 104B was introduced. This included a few general tweaks and fixes, but most importantly made use of ASEA Atom's new Polaris 12 reactor to solve the power deficiency, the result being so good that the Kyrass 2000 project to replace the stopgap solution was seen cancelled as unnecessary.
>Of the 104 IK104 delivered, 44 were refitted to IK104B standard. The remaining were given the general upgrades, but not new power plants. Instead they were integrated with the 430mm ASEA Psk85 for use as support gun platforms, designated Stormkanonkyrass 431 "Hödr" (assault gun cuirass, 43cm gun, 1st adopted).
>All of the nicknames were unofficial. The Hödr one was due to an unfortunate accident during acceptance trials, and one which army brass and manufacturer alike was decidedly less than pleased with.
1/72 seemed like a good scale for it (if you go with it being a Leynos it'd be 1/35). A pilot visiting from far, far away helping us get a sense for the size here.
>>6098016
When you remove the parts, what's left behind is a nub mark without the coating, showing the base plastic underneath.
Some kits intended to be coated are "undergated" meaning the nubs are located in obscured areas. Most of the Hyaku Shiki kits are done as such I think.
However, you can still scratch the coating if you fuck up, and it's not something that's easy to repair.

I got Origin for Christmas. Haven't built it yet, planning on doing that this weekend. It's my first Gundam in like a decade and I only have 1 MG build under my belt. Built MG Shining Gundam like 13 years ago back when G Gundam was on Toonami. I remember I had a few issues here and there but hopefully with the RX-78-2 I'll do a little better.
>>6097603
I preordered it through HLJ for ¥4,320.
Saw it and saw how neat previous superminipla were so I jumped at it practically.
I also preordered the Daijyuujin (power rangers megazord) as soon as I saw it as well. Can't wait!

>>6097760
I did a gunk wash with oil paints, threw a gloss top coat on, then did some silver dry brushing with acrylic paint.
>>6098346
The gloss top coat was on before I used the oil paints to protect the plastic, then I did it between the oil and acrylic to give me an easier surface to dry brush on.
So, I read Layman's Gunpla Guide for topcoats, and it says that Gloss finishes bring out imperfections, but matte hides them. Can I just slap a few layers of matte coat to hide any imperfections and then some gloss layers to get a makeshift glosscoat? I got the idea from the Alclad II Klear Kote Gloss bottle's instructions.
Wait... I just realised Bandai only released 3 MG kits this year.
So THAT'S why I haven't been building much recently..
Hey guys I'm getting back into gunpla after a solid break and was wondering if there was anywhere I could order individual kit parts, like weapons, shields and such. Always wanted to build a custom zaku squad but the parts for the command unit I want are scattered across several kits.
>>6098421
I guess I'll just leave it as it.
I think it looks pretty great even if its a little shiny.
I'll just keep in mind to do the matte coat before the weathering, thanks Anon
>>6098452
I don't think they know what they're saying too much. Your silver drybrushing will show under a matte coat fine so you can leave the topcoat for after all the weathering, and weathering on top of matte is a bad idea anyway. If you doubt it, try it out yourself on a spare part/sprue.
>>6098452
>I'll just keep in mind to do the matte coat before the weathering
Well, you want your oil washes and such to go onto a gloss surface...
Basically you'll paint, varnish of some kind, filters, gloss coat, washes and such (with sealing layers of gloss in between if there's a lot), matte/satin, and then the stuff that'll add desired texture (mud, oil streaks, dust). Or something along those lines.
>>6098474
Oh yeah I will of course do gloss when it comes to oil paint.
I'll just do the acrylic dry brushing after the matte coat so that it doesnt get faded/covered by the matte coat.

What's wrong with the 3.0? I like the proportions on the 1:1's.
>the Gigantic Arms I got myself for Christmas came in today
>open the shipping box, there's a nice little note in there thanking me for my purchase
>under the note is a cute little individual-size package of tissues that says "happy" on the front
What, uhh... what are they expecting me to do with that?
Does anyone additive manufacture any parts for their models? It seems like it might be fun to do that, but perhaps getting the right tolerance for the parts to fit may be difficult. Weapons may be easier to make though.
>>6098413
to be fair, 2 of them are huge.
>>6098574
Because people don't like too many moving parts. But honestly 2.0 has better options for weapons while the 3.0 has the better surface details.
>>6098574
More expensive, fewer accessories, sliding armor can be finicky sometimes, but that's really true of any gunpla now. There's nothing wrong with it but the 2.0 offers more.
>>6098695
I had the same thing happen when I bought an SD pack. Made my day, free tissues and a nice note.

What's a good way to find someone to commission a build from? I don't have the time, space, or desire to learn all the associated skills right now and would really just like to commission someone to build the kits I've already purchased.
>>6098974
Japan, maybe a local hobby store. But frankly, the work is most of the fun, the results aren't as cool without the memories.
>>6098974
I hope you don't mind me asking, but how much do you expect to pay? Not saying I'm worth it, but I'm just curious because I've been tossing the idea back and forth of doing gunpla commissions, but still trying to find a good price model and generally setting a quality standard.
As for how to find people, I think any of the ones you've seen done good stuff like on YouTube, maybe a constant anon's style here you've noticed, and even Reddit would probably consider doing commissions if asked.
This was somewhat tricky to balance. But managed to pull it off. Shame they don't make these hands often. Imagine all that amazing melee weapon poses that can be done.
>>6099002
It's not that I wouldn't like to do the work, but I'm not willing to devote myself to mastering it to the degree that I would be satisfied with simply to build an Acguy, Zock, Hy-gogg, 3 Z'gok, and maybe a Gouf Custom. I don't have enough mobile suits that I like to justify devoting myself to the hobby, but I do very much respect it.
>>6099004
I'm not sure, as I don't know what commission prices usually look like. I've got two HGUC Z'goks, on MG Z'gok, one HGUC Acguy and Zock, and an HGUC Hy-gogg that will be shipped in January. The HG Z'goks I would just want a normal paint/weathering job on, but I'm thinking for the MG I would request an arctic white/black/grey paint job w/ weathering. I have no idea how much people would normally charge, so I can't reliably state a reasonable price. Thank you for the advice.
>>6099035
Same anon from your second quote. Doesn't sound too bad of what you want. If you ever find someone to do your commissions, I hope you don't mind sharing the price it was for all of us to get a grasp on that market. If not, fair enough. Either way, I hope you have good luck on finding someone.

Upper body articulation sucks do to its age, mostly in the shoulders and neck, but it's pretty good. Comes with a ton of accessories, good enough articulation, and I would say it slightly edges out the Ground types because of the differences and chest gimmick except you don't get the cool long rifle and get a bazooka instead, which is still pretty good. It's worth if you can get it for less than $40 USD.
>>6099254
It's a customized HG revive RX-78-2 with a GM Thunderbolt chest and some option parts and random weapons stuck on it.
Not completely Gunpla related, but I bought some Gundam Machine Head. Got Z Gundam, Nightingale, and Hi Nu.

I trim out pieces of sprue to use for 3mm posts for attachment points for "build custom" parts, but not every runner is the right size for this. There is a poster here who melts the tips with a flame to stick them onto parts for paint spraying, instead of using gator clips (pretty smart desu).
With some careful trimming, you could use them to make greebles for large scifi ships (see borg cube).

posted this on the /m/ thread
I’ve got to go through some exposition first, though. Bear with me. I’ve been at this for a month or so, and I’m starting to think that this hobby might not be for me. Every time I screw something up, my OCD kicks in. I mess up while removing stuff from the sprue, sand something down incorrectly, apply too much glue while removing seam lines, etc. You get the picture. A mixture of failure and disappointment hits me every time like a fuckin’ vampire-propelled steamroller; I look at those snazzy pictures on the box and realize that I’ve just burned another 10-15$ because of my ham hands. I actually threw away the first two HG kits because they looked like failed abortions. Okay. Done with the attention whoring. On to the questions.
Nubmarks. How do you deal with them? I’ve watched literally every vid on Jewtube that tackles the subject, but the results are always meh (at best). As for my usual method, I usually start by cutting as far away from the part as possible. Once the part is out, I do another clipper cut, this time very close to the thing that I’m working on. This leaves me with a small nub to sand down. I go to work with #240 sanding paper… and this is usually where shit hits the fan and makes me crash like a mental Hinderburg. I just can’t get rid of these things. If I go too easy on them, I get these little, convex bubbles. I can feel them when I move my fingernail across the part, and I’ve read somewhere that that is a definitive no-no. They will probably be visible if I apply paint over them. If I go too hard on the part… well, you know how it goes. I either sand down some important detail or (in extreme cases) make the surface uneven. It doesn’t help that the marks are usually located between two differently angled layers. My question is this – how do you handle nubmarks? How visible are they before/after the coating procedure? Can you feel them with your finger/fingernail when you move it across the surface?
>>6099507
I remember that Knight Gundam! I love the little cape you gave him
>>6099849
>#240 sanding paper
What is this, 240 grit? if so then that's way too rough. I usually cut pretty close then nail it with some 1000 grit on a sanding block until the surface is smooth. Often 1500 or 2000+ instead if I need it smoother. If it's a rounded part then I use a sanding sponge instead until it's flush. Patience is key.
Guys, I'm heading to Japan for a week in January, anyone have tips regarding buying gunpla in Tokyo? Can I get my hands on P-Bandai?
>>6099893
P-Bandai is an online store you cuck.
As for gunpla, GFT. Hurry before it's taken down.
Mad respect to the military model people who deal with this kind of monotony on a regular basis. Nearly lost my shit trying to clean all of them.
Funnily enough, bandai tells you to put 38 links per side but it's just barely too short.
>>6099929
Ended up using 39 links per side instead. Unfortunately, it sags but it's a much better fit.
Fun little fucker though. Love the retro design. Wish there was a guncannon 2.0 to go with it.
>>6099929
Yeah, individual track links can be a bit of a chore to deal with.
11 sprues of them? At least it's only one part per link...
>>6099853
Thanks, I had a lot of fun working on this guy!
>>6100162
Anon, what paints do you generally spray? That gold in particular looks nice, is it airbrushed? And the brand if you remember.
>>6100179
The Knight Gundam and the Beargguy were actually the only ones that I used rattle cans on, everything else used an airbrush. All the paint is Tamiya.
>>6100186
Tamiya acrylics? I take it the Shiki was done with Gold Leaf, then. What topcoats did you finish with?
>>6100205
The shiki was a mixture of gold leaf with clear red, coated with a mixture of clear yellow and clear red. I did a gloss coat with Future for panel lines, then a matte coat to finish.
>>6100208
Cool, I'm starting to use Tmiya acrylics (most of the way done with my first project now, only 5 or so parts left to paint). How many coats of future do you spray on a part before panel washing it? Sorry to bug you, but it's good to have someone with apparently the same paint setup so I can see how to proceed.
>>6100213
Usually only one or two coats, since it goes on kind of thick. It's self leveling, but make sure you don't spray too much at once, because it will pool up.
>>6100223
Sweet, not much spraying so I can spray a multitude of parts per session. And it only takes like a minute of waiting, like the time between paint layers?
>>6100232
I just wait until it's dry to the touch before spraying the next coat, then let it cure for a day before doing the panel wash.
>>6100237
Thank you for all the help, off to put on my respirator and get to spraying,
>>6100242
Happy painting, Anon! Be sure to show us when you're done.
>>6100244
Naturally, may your dubs provide you with good fortune in your painting too.
Should I get the PG Zaku or the PG Char custom?
>>6100252

>>6100255

>>6100596
MG is most likely the best, but only of the EW regular one. The Custom is p-bandai, and the older ones aren't as great I'd imagine. I've only built the 1/100 custom, while not terrible, MG is most likely the better choice, as it's also not reprinted often. I think HLJ still has it though

New Years WIP. This Mock is something I've been wanting to do, a worker mecha. It's very ugly right now, but the cutting was necessary to get the cockpit to fit. I plan to make it be visible, after fixing all the messy parts.

Anyone have the 3rd party Wings of Light for the RG Destiny? Want an opinion and can't seem to find a review on them

-System Base 001
-HG Sazabi
-System Weapons 009
Family
-HG God Gundam
-HG God Gundam from brother
-RX-78-2 Revive
-SD Neo Zeong
I also have a SD Nu I picked up in December, and a SD and MG God Gundam on the way. It's a bit overwhelming.
>>6096723
Are you spraying with an airbrush or cans? If it's cans, then you should be alright provided that you warm the cans in a bowl of warm water before use and bring the parts back in the house immediately. If it's an airbrush, you've gotta wait 'til it gets warmer.
>>6099557

It took me far too long, but I'm just about done with my RG Z'gok; just gotta do the decals on the arms and I'll consider it "finished." A bit of a shame that there aren't any optional water slide decals to buy for it, not even third party ones to my knowledge.
Bonus lewd pic to celebrate the new year. The opening cockpit is a neat gimmick.

>>6102491
Unless you're sitting at your booth for like four hours spraying lacquer paint the entire time it's fine.
>>6102501
>it's fine
[citation needed]
I dare you to spray lacquer for _5 min_ non-stop at 20psi and trigger all the way back and then not smell fumes in your room.
Personally, you can huff fumes all you want if that's what you're into, but stop advertising your shitty setup to people who don't have a clue.
>>6102511
If you're spraying for five minutes non-stop you're either spraying a very large piece or doing something wrong. And honestly, last time I looked, most of the prebuilt airbrush booths you can get have less than that.
>>6102511
Just out of curiosity, is this the kind of fan you've got? https://smile.amazon.com/VenTech-VT-DF-8-DF8-Duct/dp/B005KMUHWY/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1483304551&sr=8-13&keywords=squirrel+cage+fan

is a great fan but
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005KMTYFK
is likely sufficient unless you are building 1/350 ships.
>>6102515
5 min was just a random example to show that your 4 hours claim is BS.
In practice you can spray at high psi for as little as 1 min (for example when topcoating or gloss coating) and that will be enough for the fumes to fill the booth and start filling the rest of your room and your fan will be unable to extract them in time.
End of thread but whatevs. 2016, Slow but gained some knowledge on painting.
mr surfacer 500 or tamiya basic putty for filling in imperfections? i already have the basic putty, is it worth getting the surfacer?
>>6099893
Mandarake can have p-bandai stuff so it's worth visiting the stores. You can order p-bandai to your room from online if you time it right and if they allow it. Gundam front has limited kits, but they are full retail, everywhere else sells kits at a discount.
>>6102565
Would a 210 CFM fan be adequate for 30 minute sessions with acrylics?
>>6102501
50cfm does jack shit, can't pull air fast enough even with the smoking paper test in the centre of my booth. The only way you could make one work is to build a box almost the same size as the intake
>>6103020
It also depends on the booth size(vol of air) length and diameter of ducting, whether you have filters or not etc, there's some calculations out there but I went by trial and error.
300+ is a good number unless you're building a compact version.
>>6102817
What's the delivery time for P-Bandai?
Also, I thought P-Bandai doesn't work with foreign cards?
>>6103020
>Would a 210 CFM fan be adequate for 30 minute sessions with acrylics
Length of the session is irrelevant, only the psi and the continuous spraying time is.
Type of paint is also irrelevant since if you end up with shit in your lungs it doesn't really matter what specific kind of shit it is. Even 100% edible substances are not safe to breathe in.
What >>6103101 said, you need to consider the booth size, length of ducts etc and 300cfm is a good starting point.
If you're building your own booth might as well design it so that the fan is easily swappable in case you need to upgrade. Or in case the fucking thing dies and you need to replace it.
>>6103101
>whether you have filters or not
You should absolutely have a filter. Cheap shitty fiberglass furnace ones are the best.
>>6099849
What this guy said >>6099866.
Also, use sanding sticks/sponges or make your own with glue and popsicle sticks or something. You can control sanding better if you don't back it with your soft fleshy digits.
Sanding in one direction also makes it easier to control.
I can't feel the nubs with my nails afterwards, most of them anyway. Or try x-acto knifes.
>>6099849
>hamhands
I overcame it by mounting stuff onto sticks using blu-tac, lots of creative use of toothpicks to push things into place and stuff.
So I thought:" If my fingers and hands are too big and clumsy, then I should use tweezers and sticks as tiny, finer proxies for my fingers."
It eventually worked out for me.
>>6103198
I made a filter frame out of cardboard and some filter like thing used in kitchens but it was too flimsy so I threw it out halfway into my first session.
I should revisit it again sometime
>>6103220
I changed filters probably a dozen times since I built my booth and they all had a lot of shit caught in them.
I don't think my fans would have lasted as long as they did if all that shit went into them instead.
>>6103101
By compact, you mean the ones you make in a plastic tub? Because that's what I'm aiming to make. I'll be taking a trip to Home Depot tomorrow to look for the necessary supplies.
>>6103236
