For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

So my local shop got a bunch of PG kits in, are there any I should avoid or gravitate to? Never built a PG, but have built many MGs and RGs.

They have the:
00 Raiser
Strike
Red Frame
30th Anniversary Zaku II (Extra Finish)
Unicorn
Banshee
GP-01 (with variable parts)
>>
>>6090854
If you can afford the LED unit too, get the Unicorn. Best version of the Unicorn out.

Otherwise, the Red Frame and 00 Raiser are safe bets.

Don't get the Strike on its own. Get the Skygrasper along with it.

What's the difference between Mr. Color Thinner and Mr. Color Leveling Thinner? What's better for airbrushing Mr. Color paints?

Anyone know of any place to buy either in Essex County, NJ?
>>
>>6091200
Either is fine for airbrushing. Leveling thinner makes the paint even itself out. It hides brush strokes and helps even out the texture when airbrushing if you don't have a steady hand.

Try Hobby Lobby. They'll have something similar.
>>
>>6091200
Levelling thinner contains a retarder and a levelling agent. It's worth it's weight in gold. You can use any lacquer thinner to clean up.

Spruebrothers carry it and Mr. Color paints. Many sellers on eBay and Amazon as well.
>>
>>6091218

Hey guys I've been looking for you for a while. I recently got serious about finishing my gunpla and got no friends who are interested in it.

For my airbrushing bros I got a question. It's there a matte coat I can use in an airbrush that I can spray over a finished paintjob? I have top coat nail polish that does that and I find myself wishing I had something like that for my painting

Also enjoy a picture of my first finished gunplay, no filter, just a broken camera

>>
>>6091611
I wrote the guide six years ago literally to combat this problem. This isn't just an issue of spoonfeeding, this is an issue of people literally ignoring the resource right in the OP, in the OP image.

Some people here probably remember the early days, basic questions (which are almost all answered in the guide now) where practically every other post. Some people will come off as dicks about it, but they may be people from that era. On the other hand, some people are also just sick of people generally ignoring the resources available, this isn't just an issue on /toy/, I see it on pretty much every board on 4chan that has general threads.

So please, read the guide, it's specifically for questions related to plamo, if it's a basic technique or common item, it's probably mentioned in the guide, or linked to another site that has more in-depth info on the subject.

How are the patlabor kits?
>>
>>6091309
>>6091316
>>6091326
but what can i mix it with? can i add flat base to it to make it matte instead of gloss?
>>
>>6091700
Future is a gloss varnish. Add matte medium and it'll be, well, less gloss, but if you really want a matte varnish then use a matte varnish. Maybe dribble in some future if the matte is a bit too much of a sandpaper for your liking and it's a bit thicker than your airbrush likes anyway, but it's hardly the thing to start with if you want things matte.

Now sometimes, especially with matte paint, you'll wan them less matte. Future can be good there. Especially since it's very thin and watery, it'll thin and gloss-up the paint all in one go.

That also means you can use future to thin gloss paints.

In either case though, you may want to bring in the usual suspects (purpose made thinner, denatured alcohol, water, retarder) into the brew, as future on its own may not be as good as the full witch's pot.

(And with future being acrylic, you only mix it with acrylics. Mix it with lacquers and the result will probably be amusing for everyone but you.)

What's your favorite order to build your kit?

Mine is:
Head
Torso
Midriff and skirt
Backpack
Arms
Legs
Accessories
>>
>>6091793
I follow the booklet/sheet unless the weapons look like a chore, then weapons first.
>>
>>6091793
weps first, then i follow the manual, backpack comes after torso if it isnt after it in the manual though.
>>
>>6091793
I usually follow the instructions but save the head for second to last and accessories for very last. The only reason I leave the head for when I do is because there tend to be fragile bits that make me nervous I do t want floating around my work bench while I build. Weapons/accessories get done when I can be assed to deal with them.

While L[evel ]3 and HALO are in English, "Master Chief" is written in phoenetic kanji, making me wonder whether this may have been an aborted MG Figurise kit or if it was ever intended to go in Japan at all.
Sprue gates are those right-at-the-part nubless conncetions which means smiles for Young Western Children for whom the very concept of a plastic model kit is foreign as little effort and no tools will be needed to get them out, but potential frowns for Those Of Us Who Actually Know What We're Doing because those gates are tiny and fragile and parts may pop themselves out and get lost well before we need to use them.

Oddly/interestingly, the only variation gates are on G1, which is the only numbered runner and which contains only the two parts of the visor.
The visor assembly is actually a bit interesting: the inner part pegs into the helmet clamshells (see above), a pure foil sticker goes atop the inner part (a' la the many Figurise Riders), and the outer part simply frictions itself on, thus not showing any evidence of pegs, tabs, and holes through the translucent plastic.

And I finished up today here with the guns done and waiting on the green stuff on the skirt/torso/head to dry so I can get to trimming/sanding tomorrow.

The reasoning for using the Revive Guncannon head over the Origin one is that it's closer to the II's than the Origin's, and I didn't feel like spending time moving antennae from the ears to the back of the head when I had one that was already done.

I like to build it in a manner such that it can stand and "be in one piece". Also prevent being burnt out from finishing the main body but not feeling like completing the accessories.
One leg, hips, the other leg, torso, backpack/wings, one arm, one side of hand-held accessories, the other arm, another side of hand-held accessories.

I use this AA battery powered one (Dremel 7000-N/5) that doesn't generate much torque. I'm not sure if they still manufacture this model.

I also don't use a sanding drum, but a split-pin mandrel...you need to insert strips of sandpaper to turn them into flap-sanders. This flapping also generates minimal torque.

See, if the torque is high, there will be enough friction to melt and splatter the plastic. Not good for your face.
>>
Is wet sanding absolutely necessary? My local hardware place is closed for the week and I'm itching to go past the primer stage.

How big of a difference will it make if I don't?
>>
>>6092792
That depends, are you sanding plastic or resin?

Is it an acrylic, "acrylic" or lacquer primer?

Do you enjoy your lungs?
>>
>>6092773
It's the tac nuke option, when what you need is a shiv. Gross overkill likely to produce collateral damage you really didn't want.

>>6092788
That's not how torque and friction works, but you got the right idea in the end at least. A full powered dremel with a sanding drum will rip right through the plastic, making a mess of the model (and without safety goggle perhaps potentially possibly doing bad things to an eye). Slow speed and using sanding flaps to greatly reduce the amount of pressure between tool and model will both make it harder to chew right through, and also greatly reduce the amounts of polystyrene-melting heat generated.

>>6092792
Wet sanding the primer before applying the colour? If you want an immaculate high-gloss sports car finish then that's probably an absolute necessity. If you're going for a tank look then there's no reason to bother.
>>
>>6092842
Plastic, its Mr. Color paints (acrylic) and Mr. Surfacer Primer (also acrylic).

I have my mask and brand new filters, so yes, I like my lungs

>>6092738
https://youtu.be/O5RoRU4NF4Q
>>
>>6092882
Mr Color are "acrylic" in name only as they are synthetic (more of a lacquer) rather than water based, not shit you want to breathe in.

The mask will protect you from the worst aspects of dry sanding, the finish isn't quite as good but if you use as little pressure as possible then you'll mitigate that somewhat.

Just make sure you air out the room afterwards!

I got a MG RX-78-2 The Origin version model for Christmas. How is this version of the 78-2? I haven't built any gunpla since middle school. Are MGs difficult to build?

Pic related is the Gundam I got.
>>
>>6092906
Mgs are easy. People debate between this one and 3.0 as the best rx-78 released
>>
>>6092896
>as they are synthetic

Does Tamiya and Vallejo harvest their paints from various trees, like maple syrup? And lets not forget that botulin and tetanospasmin are both entirely natural substances.

>rather than water based, not shit you want to breathe in.

The solvent fucks off as the paint dries. When you sand, it's the pigments and the binder that turn to dust. So what solvent the paints use... not directly relevant.
>>
>>6092911
One of the best ones released? Nice. I'm excited to build it now. I'll work on it this weekend.
>>

Unless you're extremely terrible with small parts, MGs aren't THAT hard.

It could be better proportioned, but the extra effect parts make up for it.

Weapons, backpack, suit from the legs up.
>>
On the p-bandai site, why do some kits have two listings? I noticed the duplicate always has some extra characters in brackets before the title, any idea what they mean?
>>
>>6092911
From my observations of both boards generals, I would say it's more of a four way race between the Origin, OYW, 2.0 and 3.0 versions.

The 3.0 is made to look like the 1/1 Statue, and some people don't like that aesthetic and the split knees.

The OYW and 2.0 are closer to the anime with the OYW having thicker proportions and 2.0 being slimmer.

The Origin of course takes after the Origin manga design with some people not liking the rounder head, it does have greater stability from not having a core fighter.
>>
>>6092953
Honestly, the only bad thing about the Origin is the wonky proportions, the head and hands in particular.
>>
>>6092946

I've already found the three graze, the reginlaze, and the io. Haven't bought them all yet but i hope to. I have to say, there's something about ibo i love. I've already collected most of the released ibo kits.

I'm really disappointed there's no spinner rodi kit. With the option kit landman rodi legs, do you think we'll get any other rodi recognition? There's the garm, hakuri, and labrys, all of which could be based on the man rodi kit, and the hakuri and garm look like they might overlap with the spinner? A real shame the rodi frame wasn't more popular.

Never been in to mechs before but I got a couple Gundam kits from my gf for Christmas and built this yesterday. I liked it alot and am now interested in learning more. This was a Bandai 1/100 GN-002, if that means anything. Seems cool to me but that's probably because it was my first kit ever. Was a little intimidated by all the moon runes at first but assembly was alot easier than expected. Hardest part was the tiny sticker applications. I guess my main question is how does this kit compare to others in terms of easiness? Does it get very much harder with different kits? I'm reading the google doc now to learn more but would still appreciate any new tips/cool stuff you think is essential for new people to know/learn.
tl;dr:
Just built my first mech kit. Enjoyed it. Trying to learn everything I can.

Kinda, I recognize that stuff. It's Games Workshop's Green Stuff.
It's firmer after mixing an cures to a more rubber-plastic state than Milliput, so it's easier to shove in spaces, hold things together, and carve.

>>6093208
The Ver. Ka has the ABS inner frame which causes it's sorta weaker main waist peg.
The OVA colors version is a /slightly/ recolored reprint of the Ver. Ka but the frame parts are all PS, which holds up a little better, especially in the presence of lacquer paints.
The OVA colors version also comes with the bazooka.

Painting isn't necessarily required but will make your kit look great. Recommended tools to have are nippers to cut pieces away from runners without stressing the plastic too much, files and sandpaper to trim and remove nubs, and something to mark panel lines with (pens, markers, thinned enamel paint, etc.).

>>6093469
Panel lines are just little lines molded into the plastic of a kit to add detail, such as where you might find hatches or panels on a mech or the vents on a car. Lining them in ink or paint helps them to stand out a bit and improves the overall look of a model.

Here, look at this picture I stole off the internet. The model on the left has no panel lining done while the kit on the right has some panel lining done. It's a small touch, but it makes a difference in how a finished kit will look.

Just finished this MG Alex. There were some huge fuck ups with masking since I had to be creative with some parts (mainly the arms) so I tried to hide it with some weathering. Still, I think this is my most complete kit in context of doing everything "right" with just user error causing any errors. Will be posting a photoshoot tomorrow when the sun comes out.

I guess if you have to mess up the varnish coat so the filter rips right through the paint, under the crotch is one of the better places to do it.

This is turning into a build of false alarms. Quite a bit of camo came off with the masking tape at one point as well, but that turned out to be from a part that wasn't supposed to be camouflaged in the end, waiting for a coat of even grey.

I kinda have. A tank won't have the inside of the skirts camouflaged, so that's just the base green there. The hip piece, along with some other bits and bobs here and there, is painted a solid grey instead of the camo to liven up the mech a bit.

Though I won't bother fixing the mess there, or panel lining the insides of the skirt plates. Quantum satis.

Hey guys, I got a question.

I ordered myself some of the Mr. Hobby Crystal Colors (pic related), but I'm unable to find any information on what type of paint it actually is.
Is it enamel, acrylic, oil or whatever?
What kind of thinner should I use, anything else I need to know?

I usually mostly use water based acrylics (like the Mr. Hobby Aqueous line).
Would like to apply the Crystal Color on top of those.
Parts in question are made of resin.

Hope someone can help me out there, google isn't really helpful.
Thanks!

It's a lacquer, you would need Mr Levelling Thinner to thin it and an airbrush to spray it.

I would not recommend acrylic as a base for it but if you are careful it can be done.
>>
>>6094856
So I shouldn't go for the waterslide decals unless I'm in a position to topcoat?
>>
>>6095206
Thanks!
I got it to airbrush with, so that's no problem.
I'll make sure to get the correct thinner too.

Anything I can do to make it work on acrylic?
I saw that letting the parts dry and cure completely before the lacquer is sprayed on is important, but anything else?
>>
>>6095224
If the thinner likes to dissolve acrylic paint (test) then slap down some varnish to protect the acrylics. An acrylic varnish should be allowed to cure properly before you go on, a day or two perhaps.

Of course, that varnish will probably be acrylic based too, but it won't be stripped away in an instant. Most of the thinner will evaporate in a hurry when you airbrush, so even if it can be used to rub off acrylics quite easily light coats can leave the acrylics unharmed. Still, varnish gives you bigger margins.

Test things before you go live.
>>
How is the HG Throne Zwei?

I've only recently started getting into Gunpla and my cousin got me that and the GM Powered Cardigan for Christmas and was wondering if the Throne Zwei has problems like Drei with the hip ball joint and needing to buy a better one.

Appreciate anybody tell me of similar problems with either of these two, thanks.
>>
>>6095285
I usually work with Mr. Super Clear (MSC) spray.
I spray it on the piece, let it dry, airbrush it with the water based acrylics, let it dry a day or even longer, and then seal it again.

I usually customize doll resin parts, which is why I stay away from other paints (since doll people tend to regularly remove paintjobs and are afraid of stains...not to mention that BJDs and the like are expensive af).
I use the regular Mr. Thinner to clean the pieces, but it's applied pure and rubbed off with a magic sponge.

I will definitely do a few test runs before I go for the big piece.
Thanks for all the help!
>>
>>6095219

How are Tomiya brand tools?

I've heard that they're the most popular brand, but I haven't heard anything more than that. I'm currently using Ultra Premium Nippers 2.0 (Australian based) and a few random non-hobby dedicated tools (like tweezers and hobby knives).

Is there a point to buying from a Hobby retailer, or there isn't much of a difference when it comes to tools?
>>
>>6095501
Overpriced in my opinion, but they get the job done. I seem to be retarded because I can't find a better file set but 9 bucks or however much it costed is fine.

>>6095594
Pre-S2 00 HGs tend to be a bit spotty. If the Drei had problems the Zwei likely does as well.

I use their masking tape, a panel line scriber, I think, and some sandpaper. I also use their paints, but I know you meant only for tools. I love them, especially the tape, and I wouldn't even say they're really overpriced. I feel anything Tamiya or Mr. Hobby is guaranteed to be good quality for what you get.
>>
>>6095597
Alright thanks, I wasn't sure if I needed to pick up a different ball joint for the hip too since the Drei was very top heavy and problems.
>>
