For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

MG Dom. And R-Dom since they're the same basically, is a fantastic kit. Great articulation, lots of accessories and decent articulation.

I have most of the dom kits. Best is definitely the MG rickdom ( Go for chars rickdom to get the bonus char figure ), it has a better rocket launcher than the standard MG dom. Its old now, but still holds up surprisingly well for its age and the inner frame is great.

Ones to avoid, the old seed HG dom & the HGUC domtropen, both have not aged well & have some annoying design choices (especially the hands)

I think this is a newer thread so ill repost here... Stationed in Japan and built my fit two gunpla and I'm so hooked! For tools I've pretty much been using nail clippers and the fold out file (too corse I know) to assemble. Tips on making the nub attachment points almost invisible and tips for starting paint detailing? Love these kits and I can walk 10 minutes to buy more!

Get an exacto knife, preferably with the blade looking like pic related.

Cut the part off the runner with a little more plastic on the nubs, lay the part flat on a table (preferably with a mat or something) then, with a downward motion, slice off the nub.

Alternatively, you can sand it off using multiple grits of sandpaper. Start off with a coarse grit then sand with finer grits of sandpaper. If you're afraid of dust you cat lightly wet it.

Optionally, you can use a nail buff to polish the part afterwards.

I use this brand for a matte top coat. I know this particular brand is distributed to most latino and god forsaken countries around the globe so you should find one can in any craft or art store.

You'd be surprised about most Customs politics in third world countries. At least here, a lot of aerosols are ultimately forbidden, and others need extra paperwork to be able to import them, which ends up being retard expensive and not worth it.

Post on /int/, I'm sure they'll like you. How do you even get model kits out there
>>
>>6069023

Okay so I've been researching and came to some conclusions, I dunno if they will be of any help but here they are

You can visit art supply stores and ask about clear coats for plastic (or something in between those lines- Explain you just want to seal/finish a plastic model with a coat to protect it)

If for any reason you can't find something alike in an art supply store, you can drop by a Car store- (They sell spray cans of acrylic paint and top coats and shit).

When it comes to car painting there are also plastic bits and so they should sell clear coats to seal/finish those bits. Once again, you gotta explain your case and do some research on the internet whether or not those are appropriate for plastic models. I read some people use those coats when working on scale figures of cars.

Vegeta is worth keeping up with, he stopped doing reviews and focuses on his build process and end result. Really nice builds and he's fun to listen to, you're bound to learn a thing or two from him and he's always willing to improve or try new things.

I wish there was more channels like it, with a focus on painted and custom builds and the process instead of dime a dozen OOB reviews from people who don't even own an airbrush. Bandai's made it so anyone can build a kit, so nowadays I care far more about what creative and skilled people do with said kits.

What's everyone up to right now?

I finally got back to some gunpla stuff after a few months break and trying my hand at refurbishing the first MG I did getting back into the hobby. Taking off the stickers, fixing seams, and waiting for the putty to cure now before I dump it all in bleach for the night to strip the touch up paint, topcoat, and weathering pastels.

I would also recommend Vegeta, largely for the reasons that guy mentioned. I tried watching videos and listening to the people even Vegeta mentions or is friends with, which is pretty much any other big gunpla YouTube guy, and I can't stand them. Vegeta is the right amount of chill, good voice, and knowledgeable/skilled. I'm personally looking forward to when he eventually gets to those resin kits Vayeate and Mercurius.

Skip all the RG crap man just get the HG if you like the design.

I heard MG FAG from Thunderbolt was great but the arms and legs have that weird trash bag shit that the 1/35 Patlabor Ingram have and it's hard to work with it.

If you like the Qubeley, you can get the MC Model HG for $40-ish and it's brilliant if you don't mind a little extra work.

HG Qubeley Revives are both out.

I really love my RX-78-G3.

This might be out of your safe zone, but there's always 3-4 Kotobukiya kits for Armored Core on sale, try the Sunshine.

Kotobukiya Racaseals are awesome and imo more classic and articulate than stylets or FAG girls.

I'm not saying they're bad, by any means, but if you like the design and you want something in that scale, HG is fine.

If you want more detail, then get the MG.

RG is one of the lines that don't fill any gaps.

Re100 series is shit that would never get a kit anyway, MG is for detail, HG is for fun and ease. RG is already running out of steam, there's more MG's than RG's coming out every year and the ratio is going to get bigger next year.

I respect RG but they're the answer to a question no one asked.

it's MG-level detail at a smaller scale. I don't have a lot of space so smaller means more room, and I just think more and smaller pieces are more fun. HGs feel like baby toys after you do a couple RGs and then go back to one.

Theyre aimed at people who snapfit & panel line only, And indeed are a huge step up in detail from HG's if thats all you do.

RG's hold absolutely no appeal at all for anyone who fully paints. The parts fit is so tight they dont allow clearance for primer & paint & are a general nightmare to work on. Anyone who's going to spend time & effort painting bypasses them for the MG or PG counterpart every time.

>Mr. Surfacer 1000
I'm sorry, but I can't find anything that actually explains what Mr. Surfacer does. Some people say it's like a primer, some say you can hand brush it on, some say you airbrush on, some say it's like paintable putty, some people say it's like an alternative to primer but I can't find a fucking solid answer anywhere. Obviously 500 is the thickest and 1200 is the thinnest, but what difference does it make? I'm so confused and everything I read just makes it more confusion.
>>
>>6069870
so....they do have a niche
>>

>>
>>6069883
>Some people say it's like a primer, some say you can hand brush it on, some say you airbrush on, some say it's like paintable putty, some people say it's like an alternative to primer
It is all of these. It's a laquer-based coating that fills in cracks and grips into plastic like a primer, so it can be used as a primer. Mr. Surfacer 500 is handbrushed, while 1000 and 1200 can also be airbrushed if you want. It's also good for covering puttied seams to feather them out to be truly flush.
>>
>>6069887
Most of it is going to be painted black so the lights stand out more
Just needed an opinion on which is better
>>
>>6069883

you almost answered your own question. 1000 & 1200 can be sprayed as a primer, 500 is too thick for this but is useful for brushing on to fill gaps as a putty alternative.

Pic related bites into plastic but regular surfacer can peel like any normal paint, especially off ABS.

>>
>>6069943

Maybe your using too much pressure. I used it for years as a primer & never had any issues whatsoever. It adheres to plastic fine, only thing i can think of is you possibly dont wash your parts in soapy water before priming? nothing sticks to mould release residue & plenty of bandai kits have it to this day.

Go watch the Plamo Tsukurou series on youtube, virtually every pro modeller on that show swears by priming with mr surfacer.

Im guessing its user error on your end.
>>
This primer/surfacer discussion is a little silly.

Make sure you clean and sand the surface of anything you plan on priming. It's basic surface prep and failing to do it could ruin adhesion for any number of reasons. If you do do it, it'll turn out fine with most primers.
>>
>>6069971

>>
>>6069976
>Make sure you clean and sand the surface of anything you plan on priming.
What kind of grit should I sand it with? Rough it up with 600, semi-smooth with 1000, or smooth with 2000?
>>
>>6069852
its gundam related so who cares spergy
>>
So, I need to grab some paint for an acrylic panel wash. Black I've got covered, but for the lighter parts is a darker or a lighter gray visually preferable? Right now I'm looking at Tamiya's XF-53 Flat Neutral Gray and their XF-80 Royal Light Gray. Which is going to be better on white/off white?
>>
>>6069991
800-1000 should be fine. The idea is just to have a slightly textured surface, not tear it up. Basically you want it to look and feel like you put a flat coat over it. And of course, you want it to be clean after sanding.
>>
>>6069991

if you want a normal matte/flat or satin finish just clean it with soapy water & make sure its dry before priming.

you only really need to sand if your planning to use a high gloss or metal finish like alclad or powder, in which case use 2000 or higher sandpaper or polishing compound.
>>
>>6070010

light blue looks better on white than grey.
>>
>>6069623

Actually, I love my RG Zaku II. It looks great out of the box and the shifting armor plates are very satisfying gimmick for me. I don't do MG due to the size and scale, and that most of the mechs I like don't get the MG treatment.

the RG fills that need when I want something HG sized but with MG details. I only sand and panel line so it's a great line for me. I only wish they'd do more zeon suits.
>>
>>6069598

I'm the other anon who likes RG, will warn you though, everyone says the RG Sinanju is problematic. Honestly for the RG Sinanju, the HG isn't far behind on the details, except for the gold runners and extra... miniscule articulation on parts.

God tier Vallejo primer:

1 part acrylic flow medium

to avoid any confusion superglue is just a general term for a Cyanoacrylate glue, not a brand name. Theres probably loads of household brands over there that make cyno glue. Just check the ingredients on the tube.

Use a pin vice to drill into the arm itself, cement it in with either a strong epoxy or normal adhesive like 'super glue,' not hobby glue. I would focus on trying to find a pin the width of the nub instead of trying to pin it on both sides.

The Model air range claims to be but in reality isnt at all. Different colours have different thicknesses due to pigment. It blocks up an airbrush super fast & sprays inconsistantly if not thinned. It sprays even worse if thinned with vallejo brand thinner which is garbage.

theyre really good kits. I prefer them to FAGS. Yes they use polycaps. If you want one, go for yellowboze or redria, they all use the same base moulds but those two come with the most option parts.
>>
Anyone know which Star Wars kits are the best? Looking to give one to my brother, but he's never built a model kit before.
>>
>>6070246

OP here. The earlier Racaseal kits come with one set of thighs and faces, but the later versions like Redria come with flesh and cyber color thighs / face and MOST of the accessories. One of the reasons people like Redria is that she can, with paint, be effectively turned into most of the other girls because she was one of the last of the line and come with hair, guns, and hands that had been unique to previous kits up to that point. It's so signifigant that her box is the only model box of the others 6 that are physically bigger.

That being said, I'm not a fan of Redria so unless you're going to repaint her entirely, go for a cheaper version.

Koto Racaseals are really superb, a little bigger than figma scale, and require a little love to show their true colors. Most colors that are two tone are only single tone, so at the very least you'll need a darker paint color of the color they already are and you should be good to make them look fantastic.

Try them out. I've seen Eleanor (pink) go for less than 1000 yen on Mandarake.

Holy fuck.

Also I finished painting the Geirail, it's too cold to spray paint so I tried handpainting using citadel paints and trying to do that technique with using brighter colors for highlights. Came out a little thick in some areas, but can't be helped for the first time trying this. Gonna do the weapons either tonight or tomorrow.

Got some gorilla glue from Hobby Lobby this morning, width me luck boys.

Also, holy fuck, while I was there, I looked into airbrushes, and holy shit, I had no idea they were so expensive. Like $170 and up, just for a brush + holder, not even with the compressor. Guess I need to save up if I ever want to git gud at gunpla.
>>
>>6070765
That's untrue. You can get a good starter airbrush (Iwata Neo, Badger Patriot, Passche H, etc) and a tanked compressor for a total of around $150 on Amazon. Local stores raise prices a lot.
>>
>>6070765
Hobby shops always rape you on prices with airbrush stuff. Much much much cheaper to get them online.

The super glue didn't work the first time because the joint was too tight in the socket and the glue gave before the arm would turn, so I sanded the peg down and reglued it and now it feels pretty sturdy, and has a full range of motion.

Haven't put together a model kit for probably 8-10 years, last thing I put together was a Zoid (if bigger Warhammer models don't count, although I see that hobby as being a different discipline to plamo).

Anyone have any experiences, advice, or comments on this kit?

most people think they're a major pain in the ass to build around, and some people think they look ugly. I personally thought that they weren't that hard to apply, and I really enjoy the effect that they achieve on the kit.

>>6071801
You probably still have a chance. Just build what you like, and do your best. Just remember that scene with the grail from Raiders of the Lost Ark - it's not the overly flashy, gaudy cup, but the workable and plain cup was the one that did not kill Indy.

I've read reviews that say the OVA version is better, but I'm a sucker for ver ka kits, so who knows.

I've also been looking at different versions of the banshee since it's basically the same kit, but with a color palette that would help diversify my primarily red white and blue collection

why are there so many different unicorn kits? It's so hard to choose the right one.
>>
>>6071892
Oh I know that. It's just the group I'm apart of and the judges is circle jerking some dude that came in second in the US gbwc, kinda hard to go against that
>>
>>6071901
Let me help you in your choice by saying that the PG Unicorn is the best Unicorn. Same goes for the Banshee.

The Ver. Ka kit is bigger than the OVA ver. and has waterslides. Also, the Full Armor Ver. Ka. supersedes the initial Unicorn Ver. Ka.
>>
>>6071915
I think I've settled on the first version of the Banshee. I prefer its color scheme to the Unicorn, and while I like the water slides on the ver ka banshee, the green psycho frame is a turn off and there's a chance I can just buy the water slides separately.
>>
>>6071797
If it's Kotobukiya expect to paint and glue the parts together. If you're uncomfortable tackling it immediately get a smaller kit to practice techniques on, like if you planned to weather it or whatever but weren't sure and didn't want to only have that model as the start to learning.
>>
>>6070765
Hobby Lobby actually has pretty good prices on the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. One of the best actually.
They have a combo that runs $200, they always have a 40% off 1 item coupon. Down to $120.
That said their air compressors are on the higher side.
I do recommend the TC-20T air compressor as its a work horse that lasts a very long time and it's interchangeable with any airbrush you get. Really important if you want to airbrush to have a reliable compressor.

Airbrush wise; your decision to buy a learner or a quality one. Harbor Freight sells this cheap-o $20 siphon feed one thats good to learn on. Actual quality isnt the greatest but at least you'll get comfortable taking one apart, cleaning and putting it back together without destroying an $80+ tool.
>>
>>6071892
Indy didn't have shit taste though, unlike many judges and other people.
>>
>>6071919
If your picking the MG, keep 1 thing in mind.
The transformation gimmick makes it so you have a high chance of breaking certain parts while doing so. Chest vents and the front armor skirts are big offenders.
Also the clearance between pieces is very tight so you will scrape the hell out of paint in certain areas doing the transformation if you paint your kits.
It also has shit knee movement. You'll want an action base. Its an alright kit, just older engineering that falls short compared to a lot of the newer kits.
>>
>>6071995
>siphon feed
>good to learn on
