i swear you have to sacrifice your first born child to sell anything on the market place these days

ive been trying to sell this head for ages and all i get is people asking if i can repaint it or make the eyebrows thinner / make it look girlier. its like. no. put a long wig on it, BOOM its a girl. aren't thick eyebrows in style these days? /rant
>>
>>5859898

wait, why would you repaint it if you're trying to get rid of it? personally if they buy it they're responsible for repainting it, in my opinion.
>>
>>5859904
its because i do faceups and people assume that means they can ask me to repaint anything i have for sale, when clearly i intend to sell the head as is because the faceup on it is a part of what i'm selling.

basically its just people trying a score a faceup without having to hire me properly while also thinking they won't have to pay extra
>>

Guys I don't know what's wrong with me. Recently I've been having this irresistible urge to buy a resinsoul for no reason. I can't think of a character or design or whatever but I just want one. I hate how shit sculpted they are and I have yet to see a good looking MSD resinsoul boy. I need serious help. I know if I even get one I'll hate it. I don't know what to do. maybe it's because I never had a MSD boy and it's just me craving one?

You could look at other MSD boys and see if you feel the same. I agree that the only real good Resinsouls I've seen are girls.

Do you know /why/ you have an urge? You can probably get a junk Volks MSD off Mandarake for cheapish and see if you like it. My problem when I owned one was finding clothes that didn't make him look like one of Crackupmadness's generic scene dolls.

I think the reason I want one is for the double jointed body. I'm pretty sure even the body is bad quality too which I'm not even sure if I want to hybridize it. The Seng sculpt especially caught my attention. I mean when I look at the Seng head sculpt I like that it has a less babyish face compared to most MSD boys I've seen and I think to myself what if I buy one and then maybe with a good faceup it will actually look cool. But then I see every picture of Resinsoul dolls, even the "good" ones they have a very identifiable soulless looks to them that you can pinpoint it's a resinsoul/bobobie. I'm afraid even after giving it a good faceup and proper fitting eyes, it will still look ugly.

Sorry for ramble. In conclusion I think I'm more drawn to the frail looking double jointed body and I think the hands are really cute.

I'm glad that I sew my own doll clothes so I don't have to worry about the scene punk rock kawaii desu goth mess that's in the market. I really dislike the crackedupmadness clones.

>>5860047
Nope, just a constipated looking David Kuncci.
>>
>>5859864
I think the saddest thing about Coffee is that it didn't have to be a trainwreck. Another few months of refining, sanding, and symmetry work, and it could have really been a nice doll.

Instead Kayke did almost no work on her for half a year, and shipped her off to Haru when people started getting worried about losing their money. I hope she learns from this. She isn't a terrible sculptor, but Coffee didn't meet the standards of competitor art dolls.

thanks! yes its a minifee / fairyline head. the FLAM event head that came out when the fairyline was introduced. I'm asking $140. (I charge $60 for my faceups, so I consider it a fair price as its technically asking $80 for the head plus $60 for the faceup.)
>>
How about that a88_angel vs eldurwen problem transaction?
Makes me scared to sell anything over paypal now.

>>5860312
You are selling a head to a very specific eyebrow market and assuming the head will be exactly what the buyer had in mind and would have commission you for. They might as well buy their own head and send it to you.
As well done as it is, it doesn't have the average minifee appeal. I love your work but those eyebrows are just too much for most people.
I'm not saying to lower the price either but it's easy to see why its not selling fast.
>>
Just a bit of a confession.
I love working with water colour pencils for faceups, but during photography the result looks so grainy and ugly. irl looks beautiful in my eyes but I don't even take picture of my dolls anymore because of the graininess.
>>
>>5860312
Someone will want a boy with that mold eventually. They're gorgeous brows, and excellent work.
>>
>>5860312
Faceup work is great. Them some gorgeous eyebrows right there.

>>5860604
That's sorta the main problem with water colour faceups. :\ honestly, just learn to use watercolour paint. Then you'll have lovely lashes that also photograph well.
>>
>>5859898
Been in a similar situation here. If you don't want to wipe the faceup, that's fine. You're just going to have to wait for a fucking long time before anyone bites. If you actually want your doll to sell ASAP, you'll have to wipe it. It hurts to wipe something you put so much effort into (or not? Maybe you're one of those super fast no effort types, but you get my point.), but it has to be done. People aren't looking to secondhand shop for a doll with your particular idea of a good faceup in mind. They're looking for a cheap, ready to work on, ready to ship to them doll. That doll usually needs to be blank unless you're Andreja or something.
>>
>>5860312
Pretty much what other people said. If I was to buy this head I would wipe that faceup asap, because I just don't care for it. Meaning that for me paying extra for your service is already in waste of money, so I would most likely buy a cheaper one with no faceup than yours. Specially when is only an event head and mnf
>>
>>5860953
im not just selling the head, im selling the faceup, so obviously someone who is going to wipe it is not the intended market.
>>
>>5860552
>>5860616
>>5860843
yeah, thanks guys. most people who hire me seem to hire me specifically because of my eyebrow work. the majority of the comments i get on my faceups, though few, almost always mention the eyebrows, so anyone who hires me is going to end up with eyebrows like this on their doll anyway.

i posted a bunch of pics of it on my flickr to help promote it, hopefully that helps.
>>
>tow you see people with really well dressed dolls but no face-ups
>>
>>5861122

Then stop complaning about how it won't sell fast enough, you want a fast sale wipe that shit and lower the price otherwise wait it out.
>>
>>5861170

I have 3 dolls like that. Wait times for faceup artists are a bitch.
>>
>>5861170
Same like other anon, most of my dolls are well dressed with angora wigs and all that stuff, but often blank/with old face-ups.
I paint them myself but am too busy with commissions, and I feel bad painting one of mine while I have commissions at home.

I finally painted one of mine after he had his face-up since 2012, and even though I asked my current customer (who's a good friend too) and they told me I should fucking finally paint him...the guilt is still killing me.
>>
>>5860185
As somebody who has bought several Chinese brand dolls that even managed to look good in most photos, and then regretted it... just don't do it. You will regret it and it will be the color of a banana before you find a buyer.
>>
>>5861176
everyone needs to complain sometimes anon. and anyway, its just a reflection of how bad the market sucks. back in the day i'd put up a head for sale and it'd be sold within the week, no matter what kind of faceup i had on it, and that was back when i wasn't as good.

Thanks for the input anon. I thought so too myself. It's probably just an impulse and I'll get over it in a month or so.

>>5860843
Thanks for the suggestion anon. I'm practicing my brush strokes on a spare resin headcap before doing a full paint faceup. But for some reason the water colour paint turns runny and blotchy on resin. I use those tubed water colour paints too so it's not like I use tons of water to thin it out. Maybe I should use flow aid and acrylic instead?
>>
>>5861519
definitely use acrylic. and use fine brushes, 20/0 script liner brushes work best for me.

>>

Have you tried putting yourself down in one of your open commission slots? That way you're not bumping an existing customer, and you schedule some time to do your dolls.
>>
>>5861509

why are you even browsing 4chan at work?
>>
>>5861549
I actually never have free spots.
I made the mistake of having a waitlist (and sucking at saying no), so for nearly three years I had a waitlist that was a mile long and need to be worked off.

I am finally at the point though that I only have five customers on the list anymore, and I decided to close shop for a few months then.
To get my dolls back in shape and finally use my airbrush for my own parts (did well over hundred airbrush commissions, airbrushed something for myself...twice).

Just need to wait a lil' longer and then I am finally free.
No waitlist for me in future too.
>>
>>5861519
I use only watercolor paints (and did very well as a faceup artist before closing shop).

I think acrylic has its advantages (I have nothing against it), but you can pry my watercolors out of my cold dead hands. I have had one ceramic plate with paint on it for like TWO YEARS that I can just wet and mix as I please. No cleanup. Same for the airbrush. I have to clean that shit out like once a year.

Watercolor is THE BEST if you're lazy about cleanup, but willing to work with it until it does what you want. It just takes some practice to get the right mix of water/pigment/binder. Some brands are gonna be better than others too.
>>
>>5861566
>he doesn't have a comfy office job
>>
>>5861578
I wholly support you in escaping the yolk of commissions. Good luck. Calling it quits on commissioned faceups was the most freeing thing I have done in a long time. I'll do them for myself or for friends or the occasional trade, but man...I am never doing it regularly again.

Even the very best customers just need (and deserve) a lot of attention and I have a life. There's so much involved past just the painting.

I kinda feel like everyone should either learn to paint their dolls, or else get REALLY good at something else so they can trade art for art...because I feel like we're going to reach a tipping point at which most of the good, reliable artists all collectively flip a table and go FUCK THIS.

This fucking hobby sometimes man lmao
Like, it's not even the whole modelling a doll after a real ass person thing that irks me (but with that being said, it still isn't really my cup of tea, but to each their own I guess), it's pictures like this. This is so goddamn creepy.
>>
>>5861601
seriously. if she doesnt want the pictures getting around, or if she was just making them for a friend to go along with their fanfics (like she claims) WHY does she insist on tagging them norman reedus so that anybody looking up norman reedus could find them? flickr has a private / friends only option for uploads, fucking use them, goddamn.
>>
>>5861605
What if his family members look him up and find it? Imagine how creeped out you'd be by that. It's really weird. Something about making a sexual doll of someone is so much creepier than drawing lewd art (though I think that's creepy too in most cases, personally), it's how they can hold it and manipulate it I guess, I dunno. It's weird.
>>
>>5861611
Yeah, not to mention the amount of time and money you have to invest into a BJD in comparison
>>
>>5861604
yeah its one thing to make a daryl doll or something, but they state very clearly that this is norman reedus, its representing an actual living man, not a character from a TV show or movie. i understand slash fiction of characters, but imagining an actually existing person in crazy sex situations is just creepy. and like >>5861611 said. its one thing to write about it or draw pictures, but spending thousands on a physical doll and posing it lewdly is in a different world of weird entirely.

I won't give up on watercolour yet. The watercolour brand I use is pretty good so I don't think that's the problem but rather as you said, it's the right water to paint consistency that makes or breaks it.

Btw, I'm going to have an open mouth sculpt with teeth coming in and I'm terrified of painting it.

Thanks anon.
It actually feels like a fucking light at the end of the tunnel.

Most of my customers were great and easy going, none of them did mind the wait times either (because it's a tie between "wait forever but get a good looking doll" versus "wait forever and still don't get a slot anywhere").
It still made me feel bad, even if they all were super happy in the end.

They also probably accept it because you are right, lots of artists stopped taking commissions.
The skilled ones have given up the commission thing, lots of them because of the same reason I look forward to stop: being able to take care of your own dolls again.
I constantly get people asking me for slots, but I had to start saying no for my own sanity.
I also look forward to finally airbrush something for me...had mine since 2013 (!) and airbrushed something for myself twice.
Had easily over 80 airbrush commissions since then though.

Honestly get a warm feeling just thinking about being able to look at my list and see nobody there.

are dolfie dreams worth it? im 800 out of 1200 aud into saving for a miku dolfie dream and im wodering for that price is it worth it or is there a better quality doll? this is my first btw.
aso i found a seller but how do i tell if its a legit or a replica/fake?
>>
>>5863086

First there are no replica/fake dollfie dreams. They are not resin and cannot be recast.

Second do you like the way the doll looks? If yes then it's worth it, dollfie dreams are quality dolls.

Now would I buy a dd miku? No way. Miku has so much fucking merchandise that if I did give a shit about her I'd just buy something cheaper and be happy with it, but that's just me.
>>
>>5863086
I don't understand the "worth it" part. What is your plan for the miku doll? $1200 USD is a bad deal. You can buy it for less even after middle-man fees. Generally, Dollfie dreams have very few bootleg/fakes.
>>
>>5861463
Nah anon, the market has just change, most people now really like to make their dolls their own regardless if it looks nice or not. So they would go for blanks/lower prices instead of your awesome faceup, that's just how it is. I have sold 3 blank heads in the past 2 months, none of them sat in the market longer than 2 weeks. Living in the past is not gonna sell your stuff.

Or, a better quality of dolls in general? (Tons, lots of them posted in this thread)
>>

Yep you can buy clothes that fit the small bust dd3 body and your good to go.

Look don't take my last sentence up there to heart, I'm one of those fuckers who thinks the whole waifu thing is horse shit and that most dollfie dreams are so same face you could buy any of them and dress them up right and they could be hatsune miku.

800 USD for a DD Miku is a fair deal. If you spend a lot of time hunting for a better deal, its possible for less than 800, but probably won't be much less.

Wait, if this is the “doll general“, why was the other anon told this was not the place to talk when Reborns came up?

I'd rather stick to BJDs, DDs and the occassional talk about overlapping dolls (like Azone/Blythe/Pullip, since those are popular among BJD collectors too) instead of making this the go-to thread for every doll type.
Else it's silly Reborns are not allowed but other random vinyl dolls (instead of posting those in the Fashion Doll thread).
>>
>>5865709
Have to second this. Plastic doll anon is being kinda rude and this anon is just pointing out that they'd belong better in the fashion doll thread.
Sorry but I come here to see BJDs and Dollfie Dream like dolls, not vintage plastic ones.
>>
>>5865709
Because Reborns and their owners are exceptionally creepy.
>>
maybe there should be a separate BJD thread so people who wants to see bjds can go there
>>
>>5865777
You would be rude too if your dolls got called trash and off topic in a generally ambitiously titled thread. I'm sorry if I came off as rude. The dolls are so cheaply made its hilarious. But it seems very standard for vintage dolls of the type.
>>
>>5865534
No, it's not doll general. The "doll" in BJD/Doll refers to off-topic dolls that are related to BJDs.

If I'm not mistaken Azone is a type of Obitsu and is commonly collected by BJD owners. They're not exactly "cheap," either. And ofc Dollfie are made by VOLKS. Plus, I don't think I've ever seen a Dollfie get posted in this thread. Maybe once?

You can't pick and choose which off topic dolls are allowed here. If they are in no way related to BJD, then they should be in a different thread. I'll take a guess and say 95% of the people here didn't click on BJD/Doll Thread in order to look at a toy called "Susie Sad Eyes."
>>
>>5866227
>I don't think I've ever seen a Dollfie get posted in this thread
Literally every OP has a picture of a Dollfie Dream. This one included.
>>
>>5866306

Dollfie =/= Dollfie Dream, anon.
Dollfie are Volks cheap 1/6 vinyl line.
Anything with an added term (Super Dollfie, Dollfie Dream) refers to a different type/line of dolls.

So what?
I think lots of male 35+ something DD owners are creepy af with their "daughter" thing, while taking panty shots of their dolls acting all "nooo, don't do it daddy!".
Or BJD owners with glitter abuse emo MSD bois fingered by big beefy 70cm guys.

Still doesn't change that if some random vinyl doll is allowed here because it's claimed to be the "doll general", Reborns need to be on-topic too.
In my opinion both don't really fit here, but that has nothing to do with how creepy they or the community are.

>>5865989
This IS the general BJD thread/doll thread for all kinds connected to BJDs.
If you follow these threads long enough you can see they are pretty much BJD/DD only, with occassional talk about other doll types that are also collected by BJD owners.
There's a reason MHs are not posted here, or other western fashion dolls.
>>
>>5866392
>Reborns need to be on-topic too
No, dolls and their owner are creepy, but reborn dolls are creepier on a whole other level.

Naw.
It's more like allowing fetish porn in a thread for regular vanilla porn.
Someone posts shitting/pissing porn and gets told to fuck off.
Suddenly someone posts vomiting porn and people say it's okay, because it's a general porn thread, even if neither of them are suited for a vanilla porn thread and the thread is not supposed to be one for all types of porn.

Either it's a general or not.
They are all dolls, no matter if you think they are creepy or not.
You either kick them out because they are off-topic and don't overlap with the main dolls talked about here OR you truly say it's a general.

Again, I think both are not suited for this thread, and I also think Reborns are uncomfortable (but I think babies/children itself are annoying and ugly anyway).
It's still silly to say no to one type and then allow another while claiming "well, it's a general doll thread"
>>
>>5866430
Exactly.
And the fact is, it's not a general doll thread.

Are we allowed to post Beanie Babies in here? American Girl Dolls? Matryoshka Russian dolls? Cloth dolls?

You get my point.
>>
>>5866414
I didn't want them allowed, I just wanted some dank juicy gossip about their creepy owners.
>>
>>5866435
We don't allow puppets that look like BJD here, why do we allow dolls that don't.

Personally I think Vinyl Anon would be better suited in the monster high thread, because they do a lot of rerooting/custom and it's more their vibe than the fashion doll collectors.

Sorry we've never specified, but usually the /doll/ part of it are Asian dolls like Pullip, DD, Azone, Momoko, etc. We don't talk about those much, but they haven't been popular enough here to have their own threads (except Picco Neemo/Assault Lily). I'm not sure how well a vintage doll thread would do on its own, but I feel it has more in common with the other fashion doll thread.

As far as I can tell there isn't much drama of the sort we see on here. Its by and far older empty nester or regretful childless women, so the drama is more akin to dance mom stuff if anything. "I'm angry that you won that auction I bid on", "You have a bassinet for your dolls? I have a whole NURSERY" kind of stuff. They also seem to be... hm. Not more tolerant of the creeps, per se, but more willing to ignore them and just pay attention long enough to know when the obese 60 year old with 200 high end dolls croaks and her family dumps them on Ebay. Most real drama seen is related just to scammers selling fake, bad quality, or nonexistant dolls, and at least one case that I've seen where someone used a Reborn to fake having a real baby for a mom blog.

Actually I think a major thing we're not thinking about is that a lot of what makes them creepy, like the cuddling and treating them like real babies, is such a major part of their hobby that it isnt considered creepy and wouldn't be brought up at all except by outsiders. It would be like them finding us and thinking its so creepy that most of us take our dolls outdoors and take photos, or that many of us just keep them on shelves or in glass cases instead of in little doll beds and cradles.

Yep, the different creep factors between BJD and reborn are astounding. It's as simple as this:

If I go on youtube and look for ball jointed dolls, i get stuff like unboxing, custom tutorials and sculpting.

Reborns? you get stuff like this as the norm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WHdvF-WYps

You can easily do this yourself, just go search ball jointed doll and then reborn baby dolls. The really creepy reborn ones are the one where they edit in baby noises or kids talking :^)

Not to mention pretending they're real, that's super creepy.

>>
>>5869730
There sell dolls with small busts (very small even) too, also some dolls that look more regular and less erotic

>Do people actually spend hundreds of dollars on small plastic dolls just to jerk off to them?
I don't think it's primary purpose is jerking off anon, at least people mostly treat them like regular dolls ie. dress them up and take pics and stuff, it just has the added benefits of being better suited for erotic photography with the facial expressions and stuff

I mean, nothing stops you from jerking off to them, but nothing stops you from doing the same with resins and they can get quite lewd too
>>
>>5869091
(not the same anon) I used to only be into Zest, but the more pics I see, the more I like Xyle just as much if not more. I've seen both in Real, and they're both very macho. They're one of the few dolls in the tall mini range that clearly looks male.

It's a soft vinyl body with a non-jointed torso (excluding the under-the-bust joint). Not in the same category as a resin doll with lots of extra joints all over the place.
>>
>>5869807
None of the vinyl dolls can dot his as far as I know, resins also wouldn't be able to with joints and legs like this. Doll chaetaus are skiny and have different hip joints (what was that rotating leg thing called? it's not exactly a double joint), vinyls typically have a single piece of thigh connected to their butts via a rigid skeleton rather than string

Does anyone else get envious of other people's skills and talents? I feel like I'm not good at anything. I have tried many faceups, sewing, prop making, photography and although they are not crayon newb level; I feel like I'm not improving at all. I'm stuck at the same skill level as I have started as.
I see many talented people with professional skills and it makes me feel terrible why did I even join this hobby if I'm not even good at one thing after many years of practice.

I know I can just commission people to make things for me but I don't find joy in that.

Sorry if I'm using this thread as my journal diary, but I really needed a place to share my frustration. I have previously shared my problem with my "doll friends" on DoA and Tumblr and they all acted like complete assholes about it.
Since you 4channers have been more helpful and understanding that anyone else in this hobby, I thought of asking for help or motivation from here.

*pic is unrelated

Help you can find on YouTube and in-depth forums, surely not here beyond maybe general tips.

Motivation, kind of pointless to ask for some: either you have it or you don't.
>>
>>5870250

well it takes practice to get good at most things. how do you think those people got so talented? they kept trying and didn't give up. also it might seem like you're not improving but you might actually be.

I mostly get envious at people who do a lot of stuff with their dolls.
Like constantly taking pictures, constantly getting new stuff for them in, updating their Instagram several times a day, meeting with doll friends on a weekly base, customizing/doing stuff for them nearly daily etc.

I just don't have the time for it, and my need for perfection and interesting pictures makes it impossible for me to just take snapshots.
Same for all the other things.
I just don't get how they manage this, even though I don't have a very stressful life.

Regarding your problem: anon, believe me, you probably do get better.
However, the better you get at doing stuff the better you get at seeing your own mistakes too.
Pic related explains it well.

It's hard to get yourself out of this, but the most important thing is to never, ever stop.
Just keep on working.
Even the good/skilled/praised ones have these phases, and you bet that even getting a dozen "you are so great" comments are often not enough to get that inner voice to shut up.
Keep looking at it like that: better to be critical of your own work and being able to see your mistakes than being one of those people who think they are a gift to others while producing absolute garbage.

forgot something:
It's difficult to be a "jack of all trades" too, it just leads to the "and master of none" part.
Instead of dipping your toes into everything try to focus on one, maybe two areas.
Put all your energy and practice into that and you will see that you get better.
Too many people skip around because they think they just haven't found their thing to be good at yet, truth is they never find it because they don't keep on working it long enough.

Honestly, I paint face-ups since 2008 and I now start to like some of the stuff I produce, even though I always had a steady flow of customers and people who enjoyed my work.
It's hard but you really just need to keep on going.

What the actual fuck. It has such a clunky silhouette and the joints don't have a natural flow. I don't know how to explain it. It looks like they took legs from another doll and put them on another torso. Is it just me?

ive seen some really good female to male chest mods though. or are you talking about the people who awkwardly attach penises to the body?
>>
>>5874010
not really anon, I'm mostly referring to how awkward the chest, waist and hip ratio looks. Just sanding off the chest is not enough for me. I want a boy with wide hips and a nice ass, but boys don't have super curvy waists, they are mostly flat and linear. Like the example you posted just looks like a female body with a very flat chest, is not a "girly boy body" it is still very much female, as most male bodies with big hips start to take shape around the hips, butt area and thighs. So just fixing a torso wouldn't satisfy my never ending obsession. Like I said, I'm picky. But that is a VERY NICE mod, kudos for sure.

If you have prepared your anus, I'd suggest having one custom-made. Best bet would be someone who casts transparent resin and knows how to make moulds.

I am pretty sure this can be very easily made yourself.
With smaller scales miniature makes just take some nice plates and candle holders, make molds of them, cast them and glue them together.

With bigger scales you can easily buy small decoration plates made of metal, maybe glass. Middle part is more difficult, but I doubt there's nothing fitting out there.
Should work well on photos.

I don't know how much may actually tickle your fancy but if you go on the DoA photo galleries and look for the 'Highlight" prefix that shows up as a gold bar on some posts, those are usually pretty high quality. I do gotta warn you that there's a lot of it that's just one offs of good scenery or costume work, but there's a couple routine posters that have consistent quality.

Does do boys love stuff, but it's actually pretty high quality.
She has a second account for NSFW stuff.
I'm not even into boys love anymore, but if you want to see it well made, check her out.
Dolls are all good looking too.
Rarely talks about the story behind them though.

>kmd666

> has a wacky group consisting of a couple of guys living together.
The dolls have a very own touch, especially her IOS Bull.
Once in a while adds snippets about their characters.
Best liked when you like alternative looking guys, with tattoos in gritty black/white shots.
Mild hints at boys love sometimes.

>Roterwolkenvog(e)l
https://www.flickr.com/photos/59143923@N08/
Has a big fantasy group, all MSDs.
Dolls are all well customized, even if she does none of that herself.
Usually posts story snippets/character information alongside.
Photos are so, so, but I mostly enjoy the snippets and that her MSDs look different than your usual MNF with etsy clothes.

>Aradolls
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ara_dolls/
Actually found her through Roterwolkenvogel.
Has a chess based story (hence the black/white dolls).
Rarely posts, but usually adds snippets/character explanations and has a journal wiki for more explanation too (can't find the link for that right now).
Unfortunately quite a chunk of commission stuff inbetween too.

>DollStars/Nix de Pano
https://www.flickr.com/photos/nixblack/
Has boys love stuff too, but it's more the mild shonen-ai type.
The stories are pretty cheesy, but I like the way she takes pictures and her photostories are nice.
Good when you want some fluff.
Her Flickr isn't very active though, her Instagram is better for that kind of stuff (and LJ, when she posts longer stories):

There aren't many older looking dolls, but she nailed it with the grandfather, and the (text-less) stories are cute.

>Natsumi
https://www.flickr.com/photos/-natsumi-/
I love, love, love her settings.
She's really good at letting her dolls look like they actually live in a flat.
Nice realism.

>AnMoony
https://www.flickr.com/photos/92890142@N03/
Her dolls are all pretty heavily painted, but they have interesting backstories.
Unfortunately lots of commission photos inbetween.
Her Instagram is worth a look too, since she posts more own stuff there:
https://www.instagram.com/beloveda/

>Propertyoftheuchiha
https://www.flickr.com/photos/propertyoftheuchiha/
She usually takes pictures with Nix de Pano/Dollstars (their stories are connected).
Same applies with her stuff, just that you get lots of commission photos inbetween too.

Other nice ones:
Renegade Trigger, Turbow, Sarqq&Sherimi.
Back then I would have said Olesya too, but since she got that Norman Reedus doll she basically takes only pictures of that one...which can get a little creepy sometimes.

Is there something specific you are looking for, aesthetically?
Like mostly male/female, extreme themes, mindless fluff, realism, fantasy?
That list was just a quick look at my feed and the most recent uploads, can maybe find more if I dig a little deeper.
>>
Is it possible to make money on faceup comissions or does it just get the costs back?
>>
>>5878273
It really depends on how much you're charging vs. how much your materials cost. Realistically pastels and paint will last for quite a while so it's really just the sealant, eyelashes and whatever other little embellishments you're using so, like I said, it really depends.
>>
>>5878273
Other anon is correct, materials for face-ups/painting dolls can last you a looong time.
I started in 2008.
The basic skintone pastels I bought back then are still going strong, and with acrylics I threw away my old ones at point (but still had plenty left) because I wanted to switch to a better type.
Nowadays I use the same paint I use for airbrushing too.
There are two things you will need to rebuy on a regular base, namely sealant and brushes (if you paint with acrylics).

Making a face-up mostly costs time.
If you deduct the small costs on materials you are easily left with at least 95% work costs.
However, even if that's the case you still rarely get to pay yourself more than a few bucks per hour.
Not to mention the health issues (due the sealant, if you are lazy/cheap and don't use a respirator) and the fact how many face-ups you need to paint to get decent.

I ask 50 Euro for a standard face-up, but I have a pretty detailed blushing style and use acrylics to paint.
It's not really worth it, since I still paint roughly 10 hours on one face (longer if it got a beard or similar).

A good way to get your money back is to be able to offer something nobody else does locally.
I make the most money with airbrushing and scarring, especially airbrushing.
Nobody in my country offers airbrush commissions, so I can basically ask what I want and people still happily agree.
Same for the scarring.
The airbrush has paid off itself after four commissions already.
It's a lot faster than painting a face-up too.
Materials cost a lot more though, but I can live with that considering I can airbrush a pair of horns in like 20 minutes.

So, you kinda do get your money back if you ask enough, at least if you just look at the costs of your materials.
However, cost on time and health is high, and I personally never felt I got enough for that.

I mean, some designs just look bad because the design is bad.
But the design is fugly (maybe not her fault) AND the execution messy.
The latter can't be excused.

it looks like she wanted to make those areas shimmery/metallic but rather than be patient and layer the shimmer powder through multiple layers, she just mixed it with the gloss and smeared it on, resulting in that gross thick uneven mess that isnt even shimmery anymore because theres no smooth even surface to catch the light

Yay my Hujoo Baby Is came!!

She's my first BJD, just playing around with what she can wear here. It's not even a real wig just a strip of fabric fur.

Glad to find out she can wear MH/EAH/ and Bratz stuff!

Just need shoes for her, though I can squeeze her feet into Kelly shoes if they're made of rubber.

Just waiting on her eyes and wig to arrive!

Going to be making some clothes for her!

I can't really see the eyebrows, but it seems like they are just blushing, no hair?
Keep in mind that an eyebrow consists of dozens of little hair and isn't just one solid blob.

Else, hmm.
It's a little weird that you didn't blush some of the most important spots to create depth.
The nose is completely bare, make sure to blush the sides going to the eyes, the nostrils and the area next to the nostrils.
Philtrum is also bare.
Look how other artists blush those areas.
The spot underneath the lower lip should be blushed a little too.

How do you make the scars?
They lack that slight translucent look scars tend to have and look pretty opaque.

Else it's what you already mentioned, you need to get cleaner with the lashes.
There are some who just seem to float towards the cheeks.
Make sure to slowly, indivdually paint each lash, seal, and then darken the bases again.

It's clear you put thought and care into this, now you need to work towards creating more depth and cleanliness.
Really check out some artists on Flickr and pick out the ones that are close to what you'd like to achieve someday.
It really helped me to understand a few things (like how and where to blush).
>>
>>5879222
I don't know if Spiritdoll uses different resin for such requests.
As said, the Dollshe fresh skin types are translucent, while Spiritdoll is opaque.
Honestly doubt that Spiritdoll has a similar type of resin at hand to not only match the color but also the look of the resin.

It's probably easier to take one of the pure skin colors from Dollshe, since those are opaque, ooor pick a company who does not only custom skintones but also has translucent resin in their line-up.
>>
>>5879879
I did draw in some hairs over the blushed area for his eyebrows but im still working on learning how to correctly use paint to get the look of those hairs just right, and trying to avoid the andreja/culur style of just penciling in some white lines to make it look like they're there.

For this particular faceup I really wanted to emphasize the area under the eyes so I kinda skipped blushing around the other spots you mentioned, but looking back at it I should have at least done a little.

I appreciate your honest critique though! thanks for not being too hard on me and I will keep improving and show you guys again later!!

pretty good anon but i really suggest, as intimidating as it may seem, to stop using watercolor pencils to draw in hairs and try with just acrylic and brushes. you will never get smooth, non grainy lines with pencils, and no matter how much you sharpen it, you will never get your lines as thin or tapered as you can with a brush.

just get some thin cheap acrylics (i suggest delta ceramcoat, the small little $2 bottles you can buy at places like michaels if you're in the US) the most important thing is the brush. i mentioned them before but i use loew cornell 20/0 script liner brushes, which you can get a discountartistbrush.com which has free shipping no matter the amount of your order if you're in the US. i've bought my brushes from them several times and its great.

if you become dependent on pencils you'll never be able to get away from them

i hope this is more bait/trolling but, its not just that your doll is cheap. this is a hobby based around beauty. beautiful dolls, beautiful clothes, beautiful hair, beautiful pictures. to come here with an unpainted, eyeless doll in frayed, garish child's toy looking clothes, with crappy flash photography, just laying there on the floor/couch and expect praise / good comments is just plain retarded.
>>
>>5880213
Glad your doll arrived, Anon! Congrats!

As exciting as it can be to share your doll with others, 4chan isn't the best place for that.

The type of post you're making belongs more on Tumblr (which, if I've done my research correctly, you've already put them there as well) or Instagram. /BJD/ isn't really a "look at my cute new dolly!" kind of place, especially if your doll isn't presented at a professional standard.

Also, in a place where there's no attached usernames, you can bet your life that people aren't going to be all nice and warm and fuzzy like they would if you knew who they were.

Shitty views and a blatant disrespect for artists is what makes people go to recasts. No amount of positively encouraging people to buy legit is going to stop someone from buying a recast if they think their desire for an expensive toy is more important than supporting the artist who originally made it.

Plus, it's ludicrous to look at 4chan users and go, "Wow, they're pro-artist and they're so MEAN, I should buy a recast so I'm not like them!" If your mindset is that you shouldn't buy something that "mean" people buy, even if it means doing the right thing instead of stealing, you need to reevaluate yourself because you're acting like a child.
>>
>>5880213
No, people get recasts because they are unwilling to pay the proper price.
There is no other reason, and all other reasons they come up with are pure bullshit.
What kind of backwards logic is that anyway?
"People are mean to me because my doll looks like shit, now I buy a recast to show 'em!" or what?

I honestly get the feeling you have no clue what kind of place this here is.
If you want to be praised for owning a shit looking doll post on Facebook, but even here we have at least small standards.
Else I agree with >>5880230, come back when your doll doesn't look like shit and nobody cares it's just a Hujoo.
Now you just come across like one of dozen newbies who thinks they are special for owning a doll.
>>
Lol don't worry anon with the Hujoo baby this community is disgustingly toxic.

Sure, you can get away with it for a while. But if you ever want to do anything serious with other doll collectors, like sell clothing, faceups, props, etc, then it becomes a problem. People can and will dig up the dirt eventually and it's not pretty when it happens.

Reformed recast owner here. I'm glad I got out when I did, because if you actually want to participate in the really fun things it sucks to have that hanging over your head. I don't regret giving it up even a little bit. I pay more, but I definitely enjoy them more now too, and I never have to worry about them causing drama.

There's something I honestly don't get about people like you.

You like to go on about how the comunity is toxic/retarded.
In your eyes the recast is worth the same as a legit, and you don't care that all your dolls are bootlegs.

You still keep it a secret that you own recasts.
You still try very hard to be a part of the community you despise so much, with people who do care whether a doll is a recast or not.
You still got to meets.
And you still want praise from people who do not share your opinion and only give you praise because they think you own a legit.

Why?
And don't say "because I don't want any drama".
You could easily stick to recast communities, there are enough people who openly own recasts who are never bothered by anyone.
The recast community is nowadays big enough that you don't even have to bother with legit only communities anymore.

What is it?
Do you truly don't mind that you only own recasts?
If yes, why do you lie to everyone and try so hard to be part of a community you don't even like?
>>
>>5879851
The eyelashes need work. Less shakey lines, tapered at the end, more natural direction. Personally, I would use a slightly lighter color to do the lashes in, or at least use more retarder to make them seem lighter. Even dark haired people don't have lower lashes that stark.

Blushing is on point, though. Jelly of your lips.
>>
>>5881035
Not the same anon, but have you seen the recast community? It's flooded with young, poor, tasteless hacks who slap a pair of stretch leggings and a fur wig on a doll and call it done.

In the legit community, you have 80% of the community with shitty ResinSouls, trend copiers, and $600 dolls dressed in sock dresses and ducktape. There's maybe 15% of the community with nice looking dolls. Maybe 5% that do something interesting.

In the recast community, there are 0 interesting, creative, worthwhile artists, because the pool of BJD(recast and legit) hobbyists worth watching is so shallow, that they can't be separated into recast and legit. It cuts the percentage down to virtually 0 in both sides.

So if all the interesting parts of the hobby are found on the legit side, what's left in the recast side? BJD is the community. The hobby is too small to say recast-owners should go be a separate community.
>>
To try and change the topic into a more pleasant one, I'm just starting to get into dolls, but I noticed a couple makers I was looking at had halloween events or dolls last year. I know it's still early, but are there ever pre-release or preview pics, or is it more just a 'keep an eye on the store and they'll pop up eventually' situation?
>>
>>5881137
The earliest "pre-release" or "preview" you will get is about 2 months to 1 year ahead of time.

Generally Volks, Iplehouse will release pictures about 2-3 months ahead of a new release.

The Volks dollfie dream collaboration pre-orders will be maybe a year ahead of release date.

>>
>>5881137
while what >>5881176 said about volks is true, other companies tend to release preview or teaser pics only a week or two ahead of the sales date. some companies, particularly fairyland, if they are giving away free event items, may not even show what they look like until AFTER the event has already started.

also keep in mind that when companies do something like a halloween release, you won't get your doll until months later, well after the holiday the event was centered around

Anon is talking about actually doing clothing and selling or the like, as recast dolls have smaller measurements and if you become actually popular people always puts two and two together. That's how Kleincrew and monstrodesigns were first suspected of owning recast and they were eventually found out.

Also you own fairyland the majority of the fairyland owners have enough dead braincells not to notice nor care. It's like playing hide and seek with 2 year olds and then feeling proud when they can't find you behind the curtains.

What eyelashes do you guys usually use? For how bluh Culur's faceups are, she uses some really quality eyelashes.

I have tried dollar store lashes, mystery ebay lashes, Dollmore 'totes not dollar store lashes marked up 500%' lashes, and lashes that cost 7 bucks a pop at cosmetic shops. And I can still never get them to look right.
>>
>>5881672

Oh ya. Cause it's so "immoral" to buy a recast doll. Lol so the new debate is t that recasts are bad, but the people who purchase them? Lol ok.

You need to get your morals in check, sweaty.
>>
>>5881765

Are you cutting the eyelashes at the base of the lash or the tip of the lash??

You're going to want to use the tips of the eyelash if you want a more natural look, and not the base.
>>
>>5881778
I've heard to cut them at the base, and have tried it, but I've never been able to keep the lashes remotely together on a table and let alone while putting them into a head. If you have a method that works, I'd love to hear it.

When I commission faceups with lashes, the artists have always placed them in the head with the original plastic base of the lash intact, so it's been throwing me for a huge loop.
>>
Why are there no miniature robot/alien BJD's? It's literally all I want ;_;

I think it is, yes. I don't think it's morally justifiable to support theft.

Hardly a debate, just my personal opinion. I don't see the point about getting angry at a doll, it's an inanimate object.

>getting this salty because someone disagrees with you.
>>
>>5881765

You can enjoy well dressed and customized dolls on the legit side without being a cunt about it.
You don't need to post your recast in legit only places, don't need to lie to others, don't need to promote recasts, don't need to break any rules and so on.
You can just hop on Flickr, type in a doll sculpt and look at pretty pictures.

Heck, you can even be part of the community, just without posting your dolls/bringing them along to places they don't belong.
You decided to went down that path, so live with it.

>>5881774
Actually that was always a very big reason why people are against them.
You really thought people only dislike recasts due to their quality?
A big argument was always that it's a dick move to steal from artists.
Lots of BJD companies are pretty small.
For example, Granado was until this year two people, Crocus the sculptor and Ikaru the Q&A person.
5th Motif is just one person.
Lots of the European artists are also just one person each.

Not to mention that since recasts are so popular the community has changed a lot.
It got a lot less safe to shop around, selling got harder, there is more dishonesty, less trust etc.
I really, really miss the "old" times and how the hobby was back when I started in 2008.
It's been ~4 years now since recasts became widely available and it truly sucks.
It's honestly not worth it, just so that a few idiots can get their fugly Minifee for cheap.
>>
What I don't get about recasts...they aren't really cheap.

Take a Rolex for example, since the prices can in some cases be compared well.
If I want I could get a fake one for 10 bucks.
That's dirty cheap, for any kind of watch.

Recasts however are not that cheap.
They are still pretty expensive, even if they are cheaper compared to their legit counterparts.
It still baffles me how someone pays 100$, 200$, sometimes even more to own a chinese bootleg.
I gladly pay quite a lot of money for a legit, both because I think artists deserve to live and because I know how much work it is (and, well, it's my hobby, no need to be all thrifty).
Getting a recast for 50$ would still be too much in my eyes, since it still is just some cheap bootleg.
Why the fuck should I pay so much for that?

Even more, they willingly send that much money to some guy producing illegal goods in China.
If I buy some cheap watch on a market during my vacation I don't hand the money directly to the producer.
Furthermore, it's not an amount of money that would hurt when going to waste.
But recast owners send 200$ to some guy they can barely understand and they know does something illegal.
Just don't get why anyone would risk that, just to own some cheap chinese copy.
>>
>>5882192
You poor dear, you sound so wounded.
>>
Also if your budget is 100-200$. You can easily find cheaper legit dolls new. Or buy secondhand. Ive gotten lucky and bought a legit SD girl for $275 second hand with free shipping.
>>
>>5882729
>>5882872
My main issue is how badly recast owners want to be treated like legit owners. You don't see someone with a fakeass Gucci walking into Barney's New York expecting to be treated like she's carrying the real thing around, do you? And if you did, you'd be laughing at their stupid ass. Same shit. I don't care if you want to own a recast. Stop trying to be treated as equal, though.
>>
I bought some super cheap "sd16" sized clothing from someone on DoA. The listing was deleted right after I paid for it, so I can't go bck to point my finger at the "sd16" size, though I mentioned it several times in my posts to her. Namely that SD16 clothes are a pain in the ass to find.

The shipping cost me as much as the outfits, but that was fine, as they were still cheap for sd16 sized stuff.

Welp they arrived smelling like literal, actual shit - like they were stored somewhere that overran with sewage. They are also not sd16 sized, and are tight on my fucking single-jointed Supia body of all things.

They were really cheap, but I wouldn't have bought them if I knew they were slim SD sized.

Should I raise a stink to rival how fucking rank these dresses are, expecting no outcome because five fucking bucks a dress i mean really

That's really nasty. You should ask them for a partial refund or something at least, since it wouldn't be worth it to send it back if it were that cheap.

I'd politely request a refund due to false advertising, and if they don't comply or at least offer a partial refund, leave them negative feedback mentioning both the incorrect size AND the smell.
