Pathfinder General /pfg/

Tough Choices Edition
What impossible choices has your DM forced you to make? How did you deal with the decision?

Is there an option for me if I want to play an angry spell caster who taps into his rage to empower his magic, but I DON'T want to go heavy on the martial side so something like Bloodrager is out? I'm picturing something like a wizard who can empower his magic somehow when he's angry, becoming like a nexus of arcane fury until he's so exhausted from the exertion that he collapses, but he's still a twig of a man who wouldn't be able to swing around a heavy steel sword without falling over.

Or is this a concept that just can't work in Pathfinder right now?

None as a player.

As a DM, I would rather risk railroading than forcing players into an impossible choice. This way, the characters are the victims of fate instead of themselves.

My DM isn't forcing me to make a decision, my brain is because it's a dick. If I'm lucky, my DM will decide for me if he doesn't allow the new idea.

I had a character on the backburner for a while now that will fit the game, and am excited to play him, but now I've got something new I like stuck in my head too and I'm not sure which direction I want to go because these two ideas feel incompatible with each other.

This is Hell.

Because Starfinder's CRB was released, and it's now capable of supporting itself. Also, the mechanics are different enough that talking about them together can get confusing.

I only have two players, and the campaign hasn't gone long enough for them to recognize what are good and bad ideas in my version of Faerun.

Dealing with the Chosen of Tiamat is going to be one of the better options.
>>
>>55327533
If spheres of power is allowed you can set something up like that with spell casting tradition and/or the Thaumaturge class.

Wilder also works as other people have stated. Core the closest is probably kineticist or the magus archetype that gains bloodrager bloddlines.

The kid with the crazy hair is the son of Charles Xavier, former leader of the X-men, which split in two after some bullshit happened. Now the leaders of the two factions are asking the son of their former leader to lead them against a world-threatening situation, and when taking charge he uses the same sentence his father used to
That's the important stuff for the context of the page, at least

I'm looking at the skill unlock for heal, which lets you restore HP and ability damage better when you treat deadly wounds. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to make it so you can treat deadly wounds faster? It normally takes an hour but I have to assume there's a feat, a spell, an item, or SOMETHING that can cut that time down.

I'm happy to say that my Saturday Roll20 Pathfinder game has had no actual in-game smut. The Skald has bedded a barmaid off-screen, and there was nudity when they all took a hot bath after a long and dirty dungeon, but no intra-party lewds.

I'm actually glad that there's been no lewds.

Name one DM of a /pfg/ game that's not also a player in another game.
>>
>>55329107

So going off of the examples of MaximumSleep, Argentum, SwimmingEagle, and the like, getting picked for a game would actually increase your chances of running something. That'd make sense given that people probably become friends with other players and want to spend more time with them. Right?

I'm running a Wild West fantasy game using Pathfinder soon, I was wondering if you could run a full group of Gunslingers/gun archetypes without the system breaking?
>>
Why does Iron Lewds have to be roll20? I prefer PBP.
>>
>>55329626
That depends, what level of guns are the players going to be using, and how easy is it going to be for them to be able to get access to stuff that will boost their Dodge AC?
>>
>>55329654
It's gonna be all old western guns so revolvers and rifles and shit. As for dodge bonus I was gonna run it incredibly cover heavy with very long ranges in combat. Might only bring out the grid map for close combat. I was thinking of giving everyone free feats over the cours of the game for melee weapons so I can do some cramped room battles to spice shit up
>>
>>55329689
It should be fine then so long as you're doing it with all the cover rules in mind. As an idea for a boss battle, however, might I suggest a tag team of a sniper and spotter, with the spotter being a Warpriest with the Air blessing? What that does is it allows you to ignore range penalties for a full minute for every time it's blessed on a given weapon, and it doesn't have to be used on the user's (the bullet will still not hit at touch past a certain increment though). Combine that with stuff to lower sniping penalties and Warpriest spells for your spotter to boost his partner's attack bonus and you'd have a terrifying foe for your players to go up against.
>>
>>55329838

I am doing optimization for Bodyguard stuff.

Cavalier 1/1 - Saving Shield / Swarm Scatter
Cavalier 2/2 -
Fighter 1/3 - Mobility/Dodge
Fighter 2/4 - Combat Reflexes
Cavalier 3/5 - Bodyguard / In Harm's Way
Cavalier 4/6 -
Cavalier 5/7 - Vanguard Style / Vanguard Ward / Shake it Off
Cavalier 6/8 - Combat Patrol
Cavalier 7/9 - Vanguard Hustle

Which means I can do the following:
Aid Another (To AC with Bodyguard buffed by Order of the Dragon/Helpful/Benevolent): +7 AC
Saving Shield: +2 AC
Vanguard Ward: +6 AC
Banner of Steel Turning: +2 AC
Aid Another (Done by Animal Companion, buffed by Helpful & Benevolent): +4
Swarm Scatter: +1

Total: +22 AC against an incoming attack

I can do this several times per day because I have strength based combat reflexes. Is +22 AC against an incoming attack enough to defend most allies? I'm thinking so, but I am wary.

>>55331232
>will it work if you're flatfooted?
My animal companion always acts in surprise rounds and is never flat footed, so it partially works. However only +5 ac during the surprise round when I'm flat footed, though my animal companion can In Harm's Way during that round.

>will it work against touchAC attacks?
+15 of the AC applies to touch AC.

>will it work against AoE attacks?
They also gain +2 to all saves when I do this, except for reflex which they gain +4 to.

>>55331215
I just want to protect people.
>>
>>55331315
>I got the numbers wrong. It's +25 to AC because of another item.
Never mind. I am still wrong. It goes to +27 if I spend a standard, but then I can't combat patrol. Also when I do this it doesn't help me, a lot of these don't work on myself or can even lower my AC.

Also my animal companion can absorb some of the damage.
>>
>>55331232
I prefer my villains to be a bit more flashy than just "Hold Person one of your important party members haha I win", sure it's totally plausible and in some people's opinions more effective to just do that, but unless there's more to it than just that it's boring for the players.
>>
>>55331323
>>55331315
I'm still wrong. It's +2 Fort, +4 Reflex, +4 Will. Then more to each if there are more allies around. My squire helps for part of it as well and can technically up it even more.
>>
Minor question: how does summoning actually work? Like less the generic spells, more the long-term stuff like Planar Binding/Ally and shit.

What I mean is, say that Lilith the Succubus is in the Abyss doing whatever when I call her forth with Planar Binding. Does she just blink out of existance from the POV of someone in the Abyss? What about if she's already in a/the material plane? Can outsiders bilocate, or are they as only able to be in one place at a time as mortals?

Some of the players in my group, who know me to be a fan of planar cosmologies like 2e/3.X/5e's Great Wheel and 4e's World Axis, have proposed that I run Planescape's Great Wheel with a twist.

There is no Prime Material Plane, and there never was. There are and were no mortals.

The elementals of the Inner Planes and the natives of the Transitive Planes become petitioners in the Outer Planes upon death, who then become outsiders. When an outsider dies, nobody knows what really happens; some say the outsider merges with their plane, others claim that the outsider reincarnates, more still posit that the outsider ascends to a higher reality, and a pessimistic few point to oblivion.

Could this kind of setting work without regular mortals and a regular Prime Material Plane? I imagine that the closest thing you could get to "regular people" and "regular worlds" are air elementals living in floating earth-motes in the Elemental Plane of Air, or perhaps vacuum quasielementals living on immense rocks in the Quasielemental Plane of Vacuum.

I have run settings wherein nobody needs to eat or drink before, so partial post-scarcity is something I know how to handle.

If you think about it, this might not be so bad an analogue for a generic fantasy world. The Elemental Plane of Water takes the place of the ocean, the Paraelemental Plane of Air is the equivalent of the frozen north, the Elemental Plane of Earth is similar enough to the Underdark, the Positive Energy Plane under a more Feywild-like lens could make for lush jungles and verdant forests, the Quasielemental Planes of Ash and Dust would make for exotic deserts, and so on.

The only thing that is missing is a spot for a generic "plains and grasslands" area apart from the Outer Planes, and the Quasielemental Plane of Mineral already exists between Earth and Positive Energy.

Certainly, other settings, like Exalted, already do something similar.

Are there rules that dictate how much can you know about a monster (specially its weaknesses) when you roll the relevant knowledge? I'm tired of vague as fuck answers like "it might resist some damage"
>>
>>55333820
By rules it's you asking a question such as "What are it's defenses, what are it's weaknesses, what abilities it has (including spell-likes)" and the GM telling you what they are.

For example: An ancient blue dragon is a CR 18 creature so that's a 33 knowledge check to ask one question, one extra for every 5 above that check. Let's say you get 39 so you get 2 questions. You ask abilities and defenses. The GM should answer "It has DR magic, immune to electric, paralysis and sleep and has SR" and "It has a breath weapon that does electric damage, it has crush, it has minor image, hallucinatory terrain, ghost sound and ventriloquism spell like abilities and it has electricity aura". However since you didn't ask for attacks and spells-known specifically you'll not get an answer for those. Of course the answers you get aren't probably as static and mechanical, but that's just an example.
>>
>>55333919
Ok, I'ma sking because as it's played right now in my group is "what are it's weaknesses?" and he replies with "It might resist stuff" period, and that doesn't help at all, even when I roll 25-30 (and I'm 5th level char so I assume CR 5-7 monsters).

easy. Have a class/item/gm fiat that you deal damage to the akashic record version of the thing. Should you reduce its akashic copy to 0 its concept ceases to exist. Nothing short of divine intervention could bring it back at that point.

As a no-save instant kill, it'd be roughly equivilant to a level 9 maneuver from PoW except stronger since it wouldn't target regular ac and wouldn't have a save. If there were mythic initating or epic initiating it'd be a mythic or 10th level maneuver for its sheer power alone.

Except that outright isn't true. Only retards believe that. It has a low optimization floor sure, but it's basically *just* damage and being good at combat... Which is considerably more balanced than having your own demiplane, being able to turn everyone you meet into obedient little fuck-slaves, being able to scream things to death, breaking action economy in all sorts of ways, having a trick for *every* situation, etc etc etc, oh and muh crafting and skillpoints.

Those are *all* things that core wizards can do, and while most won't hit the level of optimization that is autismwizard, it's still not hard to singlehandedly solve encounters if you're not fucking retarded.
Take a few moments and actually *think* about whether or not the status quo of paizo/wotc martials is in fact actually good. The answer should be apparent it's a resounding no. They require high optimization to be good at basically one thing and they're useless outside of it.
>>
>>55338321
Gimme a bit. Imma go pop my popcorn while some people are inevitably going to try to argue with you, this is too amusing.
>>
>>55338321
>wizard is the measuring point
Wizards are a problem, yes, but saying "The US nuked Japan, so me killing people isn't a problem" isn't a valid argument.
Casters should be nerfed, other classes should be buffed. Not casters should remain the same and martials should be buffed even more.
>>
>>55338321
You're not wrong, but there's at least a bit more utility than normal martials, which is something. It needs about 2000% more in variety and quantity, though.
>>
>>55338321
It's not that it's broken. It's that it changes the scales so that it is now impossible to scale anything to either wizards or martials, and you force the GM to literally asspull EVERYHTNIG in the game.

If you knew what you were doign to could at least manage to work with building encounters that challenged everyone (protip: almost no one knows what they are doing). With PoW you cannot even pretend to challenge anyone in a party with a caster and a PoW class in it.
>>
I just hate that 1pp martials only have one to three combat options that they spam, no matter the circumstances, round to round. At least casters and initiators change up what they do round to round.
>>
>>55338479
If there's one thing I can say about initiating with gestalt it's that I always have at least a dozen ways to approach things. It's really refreshing change from "I charge and attack" or "I shoot bow", if overwhelming sometimes.
>>
>>55338426
>Casters should be nerfed, other classes should be buffed.
You know they made fourth edition right? It basically does exactly that. What's being complained about is a systemic issue to 3.PF

>Not casters should remain the same and martials should be buffed even more.
It's hard to crack down on casters without banning them outright; and buffing martials so that they're y'know actually good at their area of supposed competence is a non-issue. That's how Tome/Path came to be, they wanted to actually make martials good at their area of competence because previously they *weren't*, while also giving them something more interesting than 'pounce+fullattack' or 'spirited charge & do think'.
>>
>>55338479
I mean, that's just up to how the characters are built. Brawlers, Fighters, and some Monks can change some of their combat options mid-combat if one technique isn't working or they want to mix things up, and some casters specialize in casting a single type of spell to the exclusion of all others.

Initiatiors seem to either change things up round to round out of necessity by burning through their maneuver pool, or just do variations of "I full attack" every round with bonus damage or effects from boosts and maneuvers.

Lower powerlevel by fixing/removing a lot of prestige classes so you cant apply like 7 different metamagics at only increasing the spell level by 1. Parties aren't always going to fight encounters with CR equal to their level, if the CR of the creatures they're fighting are higher that means it's meant to be a more difficult fight than what they'd otherwise encounter in other areas.

In book 1 of Rebels your party is meant to fight a couple of Lemures, Devils with DR5/Silver or Good, the latter of which you are definitely not going to have at level 1, immunity to fire, mind effects, and for level 1's they may as well be immune to acid and cold so there goes your caster's ability to assist in any meaningful way. There's also TWO of them, and if I recall correctly there's no buildup to the introduction of the devils beforehand and the game either doesn't give the players any silver weapons or only gives one, I can't remember, but regardless it's meant to be an incredibly difficult fight.

Stuff like this happens regularly, it's up to your players to rise to the challenge.

For starters not everybody is going to have magic weapons by then, the shops in the nearest town only has a dagger +2 that players can't buy because 3rd level, and the other two they could find are a wakizashi (not everybody is proficient in) and a kusarigama (not only not everybody is proficient in it you also need to beat an evil outsider CR 5 to get it). Second that creature literally says fuck you to any debuffer/blaster caster, third it has 4 attacks one of them with grab and fourth it also flies. Srly, if you think that's piss easy for a non prepared 3rd level group you're either stupid or trolling.

It's a Blood Elf Spellbreaker. They were specialist fighter/mages who were immune to hostile magic, they could steal buffs from enemy units and put them on friendly ones, steal summonable minions gaining control of them, and their basic attacks (throwing the double-sword aka 'glaive' a distance) burned mana causing damage (less effective vs heroes).

They were pretty common in human spellcaster strats because they were decently robust and could ignore aoe damage from friendly units while still getting buffed and heals by friendlies.

>>
>>55342351
As someone who's been a player, a GM, in a party with good GMs and bad, my response to this is that it all depends on the level of understanding between the players and the one running the show.

A good GM will make it clear through good storytelling, context clues, and yes the occasional knowledge roll whether or not an enemy is within the realm of the defeatable, and if you have good players they'll learn to think outside the box and not just say "we give up" or "we run away" the moment things don't just immediately go their way.

Bad players are like children that haven't grown up yet, they're still not yet past the phase of "Billy is playing with my ball even though I've been playing with it for half an hour, but since I want to continue playing with it I'm going to say that isn't fair."

Bad GMs actually DO think that it's their job to kill their players, which unless the players came into the game expecting that and planning for it just comes down to the players being a dick.
>>
>>55342499
*to the players thinking that he is being a dick, is what I meant to say.
>>
>>55342332
I guess that would be the smart thing to do if I have 4 STR, and Wizards are suppose to be smart.

>>55342412
>>55342454
I didn't think that would be something we'd run into at 1st level and I always thought that by the time you get off the ground as a wizard you don't really need to fear your bad STR anymore because you've got amazing magic and a bag of holding.
>>
>>55342499
I'm just of the school of thinking that it's a good fight if at least one guy goes down or was ready for the chopping block whether because of poor rolls or poor positioning.
>>

The moment you do though, you're probably fucked.
>>
>>55342908

>>
>>55343017
Weirdly enough so far the best use for that I've found was on a picaroon swashbuckler. Rapid shot and haste on the pistol and then use the TWF attacks on your rapier. Alternatively monk.

I just realized that Hammer the Gap really works best on the worst classes in the game.
>>
>>55341440
Sleep at low levels, Misfortune/EvilEye+Cackle when you aren't casting spells. Focus on spells that are good for control and debuffs, like using Lipstitch or Lock Gaze on enemy casters to prevent them from screwing your allies, and using Vomit Swarm to screw with enemy martials

If you take an archetype, adjust playstyle as needed
>>
>>55342981
So would 7 STR be good enough then, you think? Or do I need to be looking at 10 STR for my Wizard?

Diviner focused mostly on buffing, debuffing, and control, FYI. Unless I end up going Exploiter Wizard.
>>
>>55343084
7 is fine. Hell, 4 is... workable, if you can somehow boost your saves and AC high enough. Just not seeing it on a Weezard.
>>
Heyyy friends.

I need some kobold character art. Male or indeterminate. Preferably heavy armor, but not necessary.

I'd ask in a character art thread but there doesn't seem to be one.
>>
>>55342908
That's kinda small for what I was thinking. I'm talking like something that lowers there ac, followed by a big hit, or a thing that knocks down enemies followed by an off the ground attack to continue.
>>
>>55343065
>Hammer the Gap really works best on the worst classes in the game.

>>55342648

>>
>>55343195
improved feint or two weapon feinting
>>
>>55343252
The more I think about it the more hammer the gap works on absolutely oddball builds and classes. TWF monowhips or laser torches in a game with tech, TWF gunslingers or bolt aces and many more with access to ways to hit enemy's touch ac.
>>
>>55343195
Well I actually have 8 STR right now, 11 before racial and age. I could drop it down to 7 and throw the extra point at CON to raise it from 12 to 13, but because I'm going to put all of my level up bonuses into INT that extra odd point of CON doesn't really do me much. I'm afraid to drop my STR lower than 7, but getting to boost my other stats higher might be worth it? That's why I asked if 4 is too low, that's the lowest it can drop to.
>>
>>55343329
>Feinting
>Not shit
All of that to just deny dex to ac always feels pretty underpowered. That's at best what, 4 AC on speedy guys, and a lot less on normal or big guys? And I have to either not full attack, or twf and give up the first attack? I'd unironically take weapon focus over that.

Comboanon, the best I've found is the Iron Wave type maneuvers from Mithral Current with a silver weapon. First you sword beam a guy from afar, and give him vulnerability to silver, move up to him, and on the next turn, slice him up for 1.5x damage.

It also negates Dodge bonuses and anything else that might be negated at the same time as Dex.

Basically it's what your GM puts on enemies when your party's Monk decided to jack his AC into the low 30's before level 5 and literally nothing short of a nat 20 crit can hit.
>>
>>55343516
Pretend it says "Dragon Tithe" or something else instead
>>
>>55343480
Normally, I agree, but I really wanted 16 DEX. My FCB is already definitely going into HP, no question there. I was thinking if I can manage to get through the early levels, the low HP would stop being as much of a problem.

My current stats are 11/17/11/17/7/7 (8/16/12/18/8/10 after racials and age), working off 20 PB.

It's probably not necessary to have 16 DEX, I guess? I really like the extra initiative and AC, but I'm already a Diviner wizard (unless I end up going Exploiter archetype, which gives up arcane school) so it probably isn't worth it. I could be rocking a 16 CON and 14 DEX without having to touch the rest of my stats.

This combo talk has got me thinking. What if there was a class that got main+off hand hits on standards, free twf chain, and had a bunch of class features to add effects once per round on a hit. The effects could be something like "Teleport as part of this hit" or "lower X save by Y for the next roll enemy makes" and then status debuffs, or bonus damage on failed saves. Point being to allow a lot of different effects on each full attack or standard attack. Maybe even side talents that do something like "light area damage when you teleport". Call it something like shinobi, street fighter, or blade dancer or whatever.

You go the Bonesaw route. You love fixing and healing people, but you also love to expereiment on them, cut up and poke around in the body to see how it works, and even "improve" on their designs. You have no scruples about experimenting on bodies, even those of living people, and to you efficiency is more important than the pained manic screams coming from people you're putting to the needle and knife. Things like ethic, laws, protocol, and such are bothersome and only slow you down, and surely its your duty as a doctor to do everything you can to "fix" and "improve" people, even if you have to break a few eggs to make your omlette

Basically, you wanna go the Frankenstein/Herbert West route

Tome of Battle and PoW are kinda different from what I had in mind. Maneuvers don't really mesh well with twf, and I wanted smaller effects that would be chosed each hit of each round. No recovery stuff. And have less outright damage and more debuffs, buffs for you, and movement things as the rider effects, with talents to further augment certain kinds of rider effects. Hopefully I could make enough options available to the player each turn that they'd have to prioritize, and that each round wouldn't be the same combo spammed over and over.
