-Issues-

Green's Iconic started out as Wurms, but the playerbase as a whole is not half so enthusiastic about Wurms as they are about Angels, Demons, or Dragons. They've been pushed out by Hydras over time. Thanks to there being a lot of infighting between Hydras and Wurms, with some sets using one or the other as the big iconic creature, both of them suffer.

this.

on a side note hydras are more interesting than wurms. wurms are mostly known to be vanilla big creatures. good for new players, but hydras got their own complex X mana cost and +1+1counters mechanic which will just play better in a set aimed at experienced players.
thinking about it i can't imagine an experienced player ever being excited about a wurm(aside for the call).
i'd rather meme about first picking grizzly bear than going to a draft to pick some vanilla wurms.

Rules question.

OK, so I have mairsil out, with quicksilver elemental, pila pala, and gilded lotus caged.

So I tap the lotus ability for UUU, use two of them to untap mairsil and make another U (total of UU). Then I use quicksilver to copy myself and gain those abilities. This achieves infinite mana even with the "once per turn" ruling gained from the quicksilver version of the abilities.

Here is my question. How does it actually work? Does it gain one instance at a time or does it read like

1x abilities
2x abilities
4x abilities
8x abilities
16x abilities

and so on? This is pretty much semantics but could save mana in many non infinite situations.

Buyback tribal, since you only have to buyback your spells every other time with her.

Also be aware that flicker effects give her another use of her ability, so deadeye and the like work well with her.

Extra turn spells are easily abusable as well.

>>
>>55253598
Yes exactly.

>702.26a Buyback appears on some instants and sorceries. It represents two static abilities that function while the spell is on the stack. “Buyback [cost]” means “You may pay an additional [cost] as you cast this spell” and “If the buyback cost was paid, put this spell into its owner’s hand instead of into that player’s graveyard as it resolves.” Paying a spell’s buyback cost follows the rules for paying additional costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f–h.

Both are replacement effects attempting to replace the event of putting the card into its owner's graveyard. The owner of the affected object gets to choose which one is applied.

The important thing to note here is that you do get a choice. So, if there is some peculiar situation like someone flashed in a Black Vise or something where you suddenly don't want the card in your hand even though you paid for the buyback, you can still choose to let it be exiled.

Sounds like you don't know anything about magic. It's stupidly strong because it hits both artifacts and enchantments, then cantrips with a colour that can ramp really easily. Is it as good as vandalblast? No, not really, but it's better than most of the removal out now.

Completely different card for completely different purposes. Nature's Claim is great, but it's removal with a simple downside easily offset in EDH. Slice in Twain is always good, assuming you have the mana to cast it, but it's late game.

Really, Sylvan Reclamation is way better than both, but considering Slice in Twain is in standard, it's going to see play.

>>
>>55254663
I'd get some strange looks casting him in Karlov, I think.
>>
>>55254668
Speaking of Urabrask, I run him as a commander in my monored deck, and he's extremely underrated. I've built Elesh Norn, Vorinclex and Jin Gitaxias, but for some reason no one ever pays attention to Urabrask until it's too late.

The idea is you slap him down t4 or sooner, depending on what ramp you hit, then play a bunch of beaters with burn upside to control the board and smash face. Combined with things like Blood Moon and Uba Mask, people just can't handle the heat unless they prioritize my jank-looking deck over some of the bigger threats.

>I can really go off if the table ignores me

my group has killed him on sight ever time anyone casts him

>>
>>55254764
I understand that, but why would you target Urabrask over Meren, or Darietti, or just about anything monoblue?

>>55254766
Really? That's the exact opposite reaction I have, but I do play in a circle-jerk combo meta. Most people read him and go "meh" until you drop him and people realize they can't toss out some chumps to block the imminent wave of death. Ultrava Hellkite is really an allstar, I'm so glad for the reprint.

>>
>>55253694
No, it never tries to exile it since buyback stops it from going back to the graveyard in the first place.

Kess says "If a card cast this way would be put into your graveyard this turn, exile it instead."

Since buyback puts it into your hand instead of into your graveyard, the replacement effect doesn't come into play.

So no, if someone flashed in a Black Vise in response to you casting it for the buyback, you wouldn't be able to exile it instead.

I'm a pretentious art fag, and I'd rather not open this can of worms, but I'll keep it simple.

Composition and context. A well composed card that provides context to the world the card exists, and how it interacts, is probably the pinnacle of magic art. Pale Rider of Trostad has this. You look at it, it looks like a spooky guy on a horse, and it captures the ethereal flavour of the interaction. Archfiend of Ifnir also has fantastic art because he has a dynamic pose, it communicates that he's a bad dude about to do some bad things, and it captures the flavour of amonket. Debt to the deathless does the same thing.

I'm a big Seb Mckinnon fan, as you can tell, but that's because it has a "painterly" quality to it. Another one of my favorite cards, totally out of left field, is Carnival of Souls. The art and the flavour text convey exactly what the card does, mechanically, and that makes it effective. Really, anything that doesn't look like homogenous nonsense is pretty good by and large. I"m even okay with CGI art, but it needs to be like the Praetors, and less like anything out of the recent sets. I'd rather more Patrician's Scorn style cards in general, that are smart, pithy, and well composed.

Group hug stuff is nice, too. Anything that pulls lands out of your deck so that you don't draw into them naturally.

Just don't get too huggy. My first deck was like that and it devolved into "the guy next to me is going to win because he plays after I fetched lands for everyone."

The 3 pirates swinging in is good, because you need 3 for her ability to go off, but why is she just standing there staring off into the distance? She should be in a threatening dynamic pose like "I'm taking your shit and there's nothing you can do about it".

>>
>>55258143
Sadly, I think it works perfectly for what she does, it just isn't... a very good stance at all. She looks weird, as stated, just standing there, but that's why she has three pirates swooping in.
She doesn't need to attack for her trigger to go off, the player just has to be hit by three pirates. She trusts her crew to get the job done. She's just there to bake cookies (give +1/+1).
>>
>>55258182
>She is so in control of the situation she felt the need to hold her sword
She is just there smiling for no reason at all. If I was on the attacked boat, I would just shoot her since she is the easiest target there.

>>55258143
She probably has alzheimer and forgot why she was there.
>>
>>55258182
I disagree. If the other three pirates were in the forefront and had already taken command, it'd be better. But she's there before the other pirates and is completely vulnerable.
>>
>>55254269
Grenzo 2.0 Goad is an extra guarantee they will attack aomeone else. The impulse draw is also nice since you're not the one losing cards and it can allow monR to access abilities that are outside the scope of its Color(Disenchant for RR)
>>
>>55258226
Alright, so look at what you'd want out of the deck.
It's an MSRP of $35, so if it can buy it at that and the value of the cards you want from it can beat it you're good to go.

>>
>>55258143
I agree, she would be much better if she was menacing, or had some kind of strong "you're fucked vibe".
>>
>>55258357
This is very true. She almost looks too nice and too calm to be a Grixis colored grandma pirate.
As I said, if she were doing almost anything other than just standing there.
I'd have loved for her to be in a fancy ass chair in her main cabin with her boots kicked on a table with a map or something.

There was an attempt to show off what her ability is, but it just falls miserably short.

fuck that guy, if you dont like tutors ban them from your playgroup dont remove established rules and gimicks, the entire point of tuck spells as apposed to regular exile, board whipes, and counters were the fact that they COULD fuck with commanders and that change makes fucking dissipate 100% better than hinder and spell crumple

The issue they have with Tutors is that they hate shuffling more than power level concerns. Sheldon has said if he could figure out a way to cohesively write out a rule that would prevent people from playing offcolor fetchlands without ruining too many other cards, he would.

If a creature is given haste by another card's effect and then someone makes a copy of it, would the copy have haste or would it it limited to the printed effects on the card?
>>
>>55259516
>yes, it's an annoying loophole
Really? Controlling the player entirely through the entire turn is a loophole? "Uhh uhh I'm controlling my opponent, why can't I make them concede?"

For real, though. Let moneybags play his fetchlands that have land names in them that aren't in their color. Does it really have that much of a difference?
>>
>>55258414
???
You target each of your opponents and rest target your insects.
>>
>>55259585
Short answer:
No, it would not have haste.

Long answer:
>706.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object’s characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The “copiable values” are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by its face-down status, and by “as . . . enters the battlefield” and “as . . . is turned face up” abilities that set power and toughness (and may also set additional characteristics). Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.

>>
>>55259594
It's an "annoying loophole" in that part of the main idea behind Commander is that your Commander can't be gotten rid of. They've closed out interactions that could permanently get rid of a Commander as often as they could.
>>
>>55259643
Titania would be completely neutered if she couldn't run off-color fetches and I'd be pissed
>>
>>55256915
So what you're saying is it should be Legendary Creature – Dragon Human?
>>
>>55259655
I suppose that makes sense, but in this very particular instance of controlling the player's turn, it would make absolutely no sense for the player controlling to not be able to let the controlled be tucked or exiled.

I guess we'll just have to wait until they either disallow that play, or bring out the return your commander to the command zone card.
