Is there any decent way to upgrade pic related on budget with recently released cards?
My friend wants to start playing EDH with me and my gf and we all want to pick C17 decks - upgrading cats and vampires decks seem to be preaty easy but I have no idea what he should do with this one. I mean I see that the mana-base needs some reorganization but how?

Also are there any good edh tutorials for newbies? Not strategies or competitive deckbuilding - just how to play and do's and don'ts

Lean heavily into Green. Mana fixing that can grab lands by type, such as Nature's Lore, Farseek, and Skyshroud Claim coupled with even cheap dual lands like the BfZ lands or even Amonkhet's cycle lands can go a long way. You're really only splashing W/U, so a strong R/G center can get you most of the way there.

Play the Signets and Talismans that support your main colors too.

Heavy(est) green to add in ramp and fixing, heavy red since thats most your dragons/lord effects, sprinkle in favorites afterwords. Non-dragons I'd include are xena-god to make those hits hard and heavy. Bowers passage for basically unblockable on your dragons. And decent of the dragons as removal or to "upgrade" mana dorks for late game.

Mana base is the killer there though as it needs a lot of love just to play smoothly before you even start swaping cards in the meat and potatoes of the deck.

I'd recommend throwing in some good 5-color goodstuff. Things like Cascading Cataracts, Crystal Quarry, Maelstrom Nexus, Conflux, etc. Also Haste cards, like Fervor, so you can swing for that 10/10 flying when Ur Dragon drops.

The Bringers from 5th Dawn work really well, too. Main ones being the Black and Blue bringers.

I'd make sure to cut any dragons that cost more than 2 of any single color to play (like Scourge of Valkas) along with dragons that just cost a lot of color symbols in general, unless they do a lot (like Niv Mizzet, or O-Kagachi,they don't do much).

I got it last week and swapped out a bunch of the crappy 5+ mana cards and useless dragons for a full set of signets. I get Scion of the Ur-Dragon out pretty consistently on turn 4, sometimes T3 and things get pretty fun from there (big daddy ur-dragon himself is my usual first pick to crap out whatever's cool in my hand)

If Scion is your commander, all you have to do is focus on getting him out fast with some sort of protection. Everything else just happens on its own.

Quicksilver Dragon and silumgar can be tutored in response to removal. I also run Steely Resolve, Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, whispersilk cloak.

Primarily green, get all the 1 drop mana dorks and some ramp spells. Aggravated assault if you can still get them cheap because tutoring your scion into savage ventmaw when no one has a flier is the funniest thing since the spanish flu.

It's not a competitive deck, but god is it fun.

I was thinking, instead of using a lot of pirates, I use some token generators and steal creature effects in Admiral Beckett and use things like Xenograft to make them pirates. Something like you conscript your opponents creatures into being in your crew.

I wish Beckett said that creatures you control are pirates though, that would have been extremely flavourfull.

Need advice.

I've got some coworkers who I started playing commander with. Consistently its 3 other guys that play. Bottom line, two of the guys are really good friends and they always team up, unofficially. Its gotten to the point that our 4th guy doesn't want to play with them anymore because they ALWAYS team up. I played with them last week and for two games they refused to attack eachother other than love taps, and combo'd off eachother to target me. One guy is mostly neutral and plays very grouphugy but the other guy always goes full agro and targets anyone but his friend.

Heres my question, do I 1.) bring up how much bullshit that is and refuse to play with them if they keep doing that or 2.) spend $$$ on the most unfun misery enducing deck to fuck them both over? I felt so tired after the last session I just dont know what to do.

Ok so i built together this Miarsil deck and i really like how it plays but i keep getting into 2 situations.

Either:
1. I get Mairsail out on turn 2-3 and get something like Arcanis or Torchling/Morphling exiled but then i have a hard time getting Mairsil to bounce so i can get more things exiled under.

2. I get Harpy or Aetherling exiled under him but then i don't draw more things to exile under Mairsil.

Any suggestion to help prevent these things from happen?

Run more bounce/kill. The really cheap stuff like pongnify or rapid hybridozation isnt the worst, since youre getting a token and its otherwise solid removal.

There is some tiny amount of people that have full autographed sets of Beta and those are insanely valuable and there are obscure cards drawn by dead artists so only a handful of autographed ones exist in the world. I don't know of any specifics that aren't commonly used. If you've got doubling season or vigor, Mycoloth plays into that whole doubled counters into quadrupled tokens thing. Plus obligatory Cathars Crusade. Just +1/+1 and tokens standard fare

I want to make a deck that says "fuck you" to card-holding strategies. The kind of deck where you vomit out everything in your hand and encourage everyone else to do it too; a deck that punishes waiting for the perfect moment to assemble your win-con. I want to buttfuck strategy.

I was thinking Ruric Thar, but somehow I feel like he's not on-the-nose enough. Are there any other commanders that attempt to persuade the other players at the table that maybe holding onto that counterspell or combo piece is a bad idea?

Pic related is exactly the kind of thing I'm going for. If I could make a commander out of Uba Mask I would do it. "Sorry, you don't get to hold cards."

CAVEAT: I do not want a chaos deck. I want to fuck with their strategy, but *I* still want to have a strategy, even if it's just belching out creatures and turning them sideways. I want to speed up the game, not slow it down.

I don't like hug decks.

Even if they have effects that give every player an equal effect, it does not have the same effect on everybody. Colors that are low on ramp or card advantage suddenly have access to massive draw and early mana. Even though these benefits are distributed evenly, those colors that already have lots of card draw and ramp are less benefited than those I have just mentioned. Moreover, suddenly having 7 mana on turn 3 disproportionately affects those with higher average CMC decks where before they would have to wait some turns and possibly build a board state (if they can), whereas this is easier for lower cmc decks. In this way, it is not possible for hug decks to uniformly advantage every player.

It's a little boring and awkwardly framed, but it's not bad. It demonstrates what the card does. She's going down into some kind of underworld to find something in your graveyard. Not every card art needs to be a dynamic action shot. The original Snapcaster art was pretty boring, and that didn't stop people from loving the card and the effect.

Samuts card is repulsive because her in-story character, card mechanics, and art depiction don't align. She's the leader of movement for freeing her people but looks like a mindless bezerker. He textbox is mess of keywords that don't have meanfuling ties to her character besides "she's a speedster" and when implemented into the game, make even less sense (Flash + Vigilance+ Haste + Group Haste).
Kess looks like a wizard and the art depicts the narrative of what you would expect from a mage searching through a netherworld for lost/forgotten resources

What are some good BIG blue (or UG/UR) creatures?
I'd like to build an Animar deck focused on great, costly creatures (instead of the more competitive "Have some creatures bounce until Animar has infinite counters") and while finding big and strong R and G creatures is easy also I have a friend that runs a Mayael deck, so even in the worst case I could just get ideas from that, I'm not really sure about the U ones. Most of the ones I've seen don't have good effects and the ones that do have them aren't really that useful in the deck I'm trying to build, like Guile

Also, how should I build the mana curve? Building a deck that lets you cheat out creatures for cheap is a first for me, and I'm not sure how much to the right should I move the mean value

Maybe it won't suits your taste, but there is my decklist, on a budget with recent card Maybe not Dragon Arch and Time of need, but hey, that's two cards .
I reworked the manabase with the cards I own, just do the same with yours own lands. Basically cut lands that enter the battlefields tapped (16 is way too much) and add one or two ramp spells.
For the dragons, I suggest to reduce their number and add some protection or recursive. Keep yours favorites dragons, there is no bad choice, at least for a friendly environment.

it's painful to build a budget mtg deck and order the cards on the internet without ever having ever played mtg, but it's a month faster and 100+$ cheaper than buying booster packs and trading the cards you find from them to build a deck.
Perhaps you can copy someone else budget list and just order all the 100 cards from the same website.

a good alternative is to buy one of the new preconstructed commander decks, eventually buy single cards online/at the store to improve it, there are plenty of guides online dedicated to improve exactly those 4 new decks.they might not be as powerful as other commander decks both in their starting and upgraded form, but at least they let you try the format and improve the deck overtime rather than having to choose a list now and make a bigger purchase without any idea of what you are doing.

What was your favorite card when you were first introduced to MtG?
You know, the card that turned out to be awful in most scenarios but you could just never let go of your love for it.

Oh awful in most scenarios. This fuck is still a staple in my boros soldiers.

I'm curious about other people's metas, do you notice consistent quirks or strats? Pet cards you never see elsewhere?

I play with a pretty small group of people, (working on bringing more into the fold) and they never seem to run spot removal or much interaction at all. Especially when it comes to combat tricks.
Maybe they're just really bad but, I seem like the asshole when I pass the turn with enough mana open to fuck someone's master plan over.

Depends, if it's an ability of a permanent that's on the field I don't mind backsies. There's a lot of cards on the table and if people had to double check them before a play the game would take way too long (yes ideally they would remember all relevant permanents)
If it's something being revealed like card from hand or morph then it's too late.

I do my best but a few I play with do this. I do the opposite and put my cards on the table once I have a plan. Also helps baiting people if they think I can't respond on their turn

in highschool I had to "invent" cutting a deck before I knew what it even was since one of my friends would look through his deck for the specific card he needed, put it on the bottom, then slide it to the top the next time he drew a card
usually when he used an evolving wilds but sometimes he would "check if he put in a card earlier"

but then kitchen table magic was pointless anyway and they all quit after I started going to fnms and actually started playing with legit rules
