Need WFRP advice.

One of my players started as a Marine, advanced to Mate, and is now almost ready to advance to Sea Captain. He just needs a few last skills. The problem is two of them don't seem super logical, namely Speak Language (Breton, Kislevite, OR Tilean) and Trade (Shipwright).

Both of those skills are super complex and would involve many months of training at best, and years at worst. In situations like this, would you suggest swapping out the skills for others? But what if they are put in place specifically to BE difficult, thus limiting access to the more advanced career?
>>
>>55213658
To be honest it can be roleplayed as "I've been picking up bits of the language here and there." Being from Florida, I can tell you that you don't have to be able to speak a language very well at all to be understood.
>>
>>55213658
>Speak Language
Being on a ship, he's probably been around people speaking those languages. A week or two of dedicated study from someone who knows those langues and he's set.

>Shipwright
This could easy be just all the bits about ships and their design that you have to know in order to sail them.

Remember that every skill has three ranks to it: has the skill, +10 to the skill, and +20 to it. Having the skill doesn't make you an instant expert unless you have a godly high stat associated with it, which just means you're a natural.

As someone who just got into this setting thanks to TW:W and Vermintide, was Mannfred really more popular than Vlad? Why would GW keep Mannfred alive in AoS but get rid of Vlad?
>>
>>55214696
>Why would GW keep Mannfred alive in AoS but get rid of Vlad?
Because Vlad is hideously ugly.
>>
>>55214730

Yeah, but Vlad seems (to me at least, based only on what little lore I've read) to be a more interesting character instead of yet another 'evil sneaky schemer' archetype.

Not to mention, they could almost justify having some undead on the side of Sigmar - I can't imagine Vlad would necessarily have left with Nagash.
>>
>>55214696
I don't think Mannfred really was, but Vlad only came back in the End Times, and before that Mannfred was the poster child of the Vampire Counts - even if Vlad was a fan favorite, it'd be like throwing out a mascot to get rid of Mannfred.

Then again, I can't say what AoS has done with him. They made Malekith a dragon man or something, it's likely he's only loosely related to the WFB version. Because GW didn't have the balls to just make up a brand new setting like they obviously wanted to.
>>
>>55214760
You have to realize, pre-8th/End Times/TWW Mannfred was actually a pretty cool guy. He was clever and cunning, but not a complete backstabber like he's portrayed today. He was never really Vlad's equal, but he was the closest thing to it after Vlad died and had the most potential of eventually becoming a worthy successor. Then GW made him bald and suck donkey balls.

Look up the 'Liber Necris" for a better Mannfred.
>>
>>55214923

Ah, see, I didn't know exactly how long it'd been since they released the "Vlad is kill" lore.

>>55214933
Ok, so it's only during the death of Vlad and near the end of the setting that Mannfred's just another duplicitous cunt? I'll look more into it, then.
>>
>>55215022
Vlad and Isabella were already canonically dead when the faction was released. Old Warhammer Fantasy had a kinda loose timeline and included "historical" figures as heroes in some factions.
>>
>>55214696
Mannlet is widely despised (much like Archaon), but GW either doesn't care, doesn't understand, or he's a creator's pet (like Archaon).
>>
>>55214923
>it'd be like throwing out a mascot to get rid of Mannfred.

It'd be throwing out Scrappy-Doo and going back to Scooby only.

Do you know how to properly butcher an animal, distinguish edible berries, fruits and mushrooms from poisonous ones, make soap, make shoes and other kinds of clothing, hunt, make ale, carpentry and husbandry?
'Cause all of those were just some of the common skillsets pretty much every medieval peasant knew.

>>55211742
I was however talking about days in the calender that were designated holydays, not days were you could slack off if you wanted to. Pretty much every saint had their holyday IIRC meaning that every region had plenty of local and import ones to safeguard plenty of free time.
The fact that you can't work on the harvest every day doesn't mean that you could just laze around. There were plenty of other things to do around the farm.
>>
>>55216879
Why would you want to? You barely have to change anything to shove him in, sure - just change the gods or whatever into a group of daemon princes, it practically already fits. But that also means that he's rather boring, because 'oh great it's Grifftith but WFB.' Unless you really want to change up the character so he's not Griffith - defeating the point of trying to include him - it's not going to be interesting.

Seriously though, dwarfs have to be the worst "good guy" race that exists
>Do literally nothing but quarrel among themselves over muh grudges muh honour and petty suburban family politics
>Think themselves far superior to umgi and elgi because they can drink beer and hit rocks with hammers, meanwhile lose 99% of their territory to sub 70 IQ goblins and shit stained ratmen in a few hundred years
>Are complete petty man-children susceptible to autistic temper tantrums; will slaughter entire towns and execute every woman and child they find because some long dead city-noble failed to meet the monthly trade deal thousands of years ago, expend obscene amounts of stress and energy over "grudges" meanwhile their race is almost extinct and the world is close to being annihilated at any moment
>Never leave their holds or actually do anything of relevance other than getting btfo by goblins
>Hate "sissy" elves even though elves have done more to save the world than dwarfs ever have
>Are so utterly obsessed with money and material possession that they make jews look charitable, literally have a biological addiction to money, would sell off all kin and allies for gold, grungni is actually the fifth chaos god of kikery

What were the old ones thinking when they made dwarves?? Is that the best they could do?
>We need to build a race that can stop chaos once and for all
>Lets try midget autistic OCD tourettes hairy money grubbing man children that like burrowing in the ground! Thats a good trick!

That's humans though. They spread everywhere like the plague, routinely fall to chaos, lead to the creation of new chaos races (beastmen), job just as hard as dorfs to space fungus, and despite being so young managed to spawn the fucker that actually ended the world.

I'm sure there's some sort of asspull that tries to explain otherwise but the warhammer world would be far better off without humanity.

Boris doesn't have kids - they died as part of some mysterious circumstances/plot. And even if they didn't, the legitimate heir was week and feeble, while his bastard was the good one. Neither could reasonably be the Emperor.

You'd have to choose an actual Elector, someone with experience, legitimacy, and all the good traits an Emperor needs.

>>55224641
Judging from how she seems to be breathing energy of some sort into his body, I'd imagine she's some sort of magic-attuned Arabyan girl he captured to help keep himself in peak condition. And it's not like it's impossible for them to get food.

There was a short story where a Tomb King managed to keep an Arabyan...I forget his title, but something like a scholar or an adviser. He was kept alive so that his mind would stay fully functional as he acted as the Tomb King's servant, so I suppose they must've gotten food for him somehow.
>>
>>55224641
Some Tomb Kings keep living captives as members of their court.
There's a short story called 'Totentanz' about a wager between an Arabyan poet (iirc) and his undead captor.

>>
>>55225227
Well compared to the other lords you know when you have to choose between the vampire who occasionally eats a granma, or the vampire who organizes blood sports and "feasts" most people choose the former.
>>
>>55225227
The "bad" Mousillonian landlords include a literal madman whose castle is a charnel house of decomposing corpses, human meat on spits, burnt furniture, and excrement. His underlings are all vicious bandits who stick to their "lord" because they basically get to live it up as long as they terrorize his peasants in his name, delivering his insane demands of the peasantry for which he may or may not kill them for disobeying.

So any of the old guys, since Fate of Konor thread had discussion about it.

How did the campaing for Storm of Chaos look like? Is it true that Chaos was stopped at some village before Kislev?
>>
>>55226523
Chaos came in second place on points, but that didn't really matter - second is first to lose, and they lost every meaningful engagement there was even with GW cheating on their behalf.
>>
>>55226546
Did they really got stopped at some village?

>>
>>55226659
So the Grimgor bashing Archaon was scripted aswell?
>>
>>55226682
No, GW held a vote for the final result and brought in the next runner-up on points, orcs, thinking Chaos would win. Instead orcs did, so Grimgor appeared out of nowhere, kicked Archaon in the dick (really), shouted he was the best, and left.

>Band of Hawk are Bretonnian renegade group
>Griffith wants to become Royarch
>Skull Knight is a Tomb King
>Zodd/Apostles are all Daemons
>God Hand are 4 Greater Daemons/Daemon Princes. Want to be a total madman? Make them the Chaos Gods themselves (Femto = Tzeentch, Slaan = Slaanesh, Conrad = Nurgle, make Ubik buff and he can be Khorne)
>Griffith is elevated to Daemon Prince
>Neo-Band of Hawk are a Warriors of Chaos warband
>Fairy people place is Athel Loren
>Mozgus is a crazy Witch Hunter
>Kushan is Ind or Araby, the Sultan is a Daemon Prince

it all fits quite easily with minimal story changes
>>

Vlad has always been more popular both in and out of universe. Mannfred was liked well enough until he became a bald retard, then he garnered Archaon levels of fan dislike.

As of End Times, there weren't any canonically black characters, no.

Nagash was pretty brown before he went skeleton though, as were the tomb kings in general. I remember someone's concept of a Southlands Tomb King colony that was modeled off the Nubians and it turned out pretty good

There's so much wrong with this post and i'm not even a Dwarf fag

Dwarven grooges are often played up for WH black humor, in actual practice is usually functions like wergeld. In fact, all grudges, even blood debt, can be paid off in gold up to a certain point. The reason they show up centuries later is it literally takes centuries of badgering and constantly asking for recompse before it moves to "welp, time to murder everyone" tier.

They hate elves, yes, because the King of the Elves betrayed them and treated them like shit when they were both tricked by Malekith. The War of the Bear was hugely devastating for both races, and born as much by Helf Arrogance as it was Dwarven stubbornness. Elves HAVE done a lot to fight chaos, hell they saved the world with the Maelstrom - they also have done the most to PERPETUATE it and their fuckups are the reason the world ends (though specifically, everything is Morathi's fault forever)

Finally, they lost many of their holds to a series of natural disasters. They were hit by devastating earth quakes, and THEN the greenskins attacked in the aftermath. The reason dwarves are so salty about it can be seen on a map - they once stretched across the whole of the fucking world, and now they're reduced to less than a dozen scattered holds. TW:WH hammers (hue) it home with just how many fucking dwarf holds you have to retake just to wind Badlands Bowl

Anyone watch old world wars on YouTube? Yes, just like the real Holy Roman Empire

are you talking about ash? he is a tool and gets fired so steve took over. try the recent ones with steve running the show. luka cullen and quirk started helping but don't know the rules as well. steve knows his high elfs and lizards best and cullen knows his skaven so games with those will have the least rules errors
>>
>>55232002
Steve is the one who seems like a tool. Usually everyone else seems like they're making some mistakes but they roll with it. The last one I watched that turned me off to the whole thing was some WoC vs Skaven where the skaven guy was some British dude and Steve seemingly went out of his way to be a jerk about things, or at least go in to total "everything is about movement", charging with 2 marauder horsemen through some tiny gap to run something off the table (and not getting a good angle on camera for it), and then sniping the skaven general in close combat through positioning with the rest of the unit it being able to attack, and then pulling what he called "magic chicken" saying he was going to end his magic phase so the other guy would use his dispel dice to dispel a remains in play spell, only to turn around and recast it once his opponent blew all his dispel dice, all while patting himself on the back about how awesome he is. The whole thing was kind of cringey relative to most of the other games that were more about just smashing shit together, or the ones where the other guy knows his stuff well enough it doesn't feel like Steve is letting them/prodding them to make stupid mistakes just to take advantage.

The rest of the time it feels like a toss up between having no idea how to run the army and the battle turning out one sided or having an actual quality game.
>>
>>55229668
They exist, but only as single mounts, not ones that you could form into a unit like Pegasus Knights. And you say it yourself - Tsar Boris was unique in having a war bear as a mount, it would be strange to give Kislev bear cavalry. Kislev honestly has more potential than Bretonnia, it doesn't need love and attention like that that bends the lore to make it viable.

>>
>>55235159
In real life? A pike allows you to bring more weapons to bear and better hold off cavalry (unless you're fighting Poles), and is generally good at keeping foes at bay. Howrver, they're heavier, clumsy, and awkward to bring to bear. If someone gets under the pike line - and this did happen, doppelsoldner had the job of making it happen - you were basically defenseless. You can't shorten up your grip like with a spear, you can't drop it and draw a sidearm or you compromise your comradee, and you can't withdraw or you fuck with your comrades and firing lines.

Spanish pikemen were drilled to literally stand there and let you stab them during the pike and shot era, they counted on swordsmen in the ranks to protect them, or else gunners/crossbowmen at the heart of the square.

Of course, 3rd ed WHFB had rules for Nipponese Kamikaze Skyrockets too, so there's that too. It's a not-Renaissance setting and the NotJapanese are somehow flying suicide bombs.

On another note, the 6e Tomb King book had this blurb.

"At the front of Alcadizzar's army stood trumpeting tuskas, the dark-skinned Ebonian auxiliaries gathered in loose formation around their massive, grey war beasts."

I imagine if there was ever a "Warhammer Fantasy Ancients" game (one could dream), Ebonians or other sub-Khemrian armies could be the NotCarthage to Khemri's NotEgypt or so.

Jesus, so much wasted potential. This movie was fucking bad, only the beginning (in the water) and the end (the battle) was cool, the rest was fucking ridiculous. Also, it's needed to be said: why the fuck Aragorn would be using a rapier in battle, and not a side-sword or something similiar that actually can be used to hack and slash? It's a fucking misconception that a rapier (espada ropera - generally a thrusting weapon) was used in battles, because there's no way you could fence in a pike formation or riding a horse. Rapier maybe was used by an officers commanding cannon crews, but not infrantry men. In XVI-XVII ceuntry they were using pic related during war. Rapier was generally a civilian weapon.
>>
>>55238437
Maybe it's like why you see Colts so often in westerns? They just look sexier - especially for cinematic works - than other kinds of revolvers that were common, or even arguably more common. You'd give a major character a sexier looking sword rather than one that was functional.

Fair enough, it's not like the Empire does much impressing of criminals into service either.

I just thought it would be interestingly flavorful, and a fun way to allow Bretonnia mercenaries without letting them get off scot free - mercenaries are unchivalrous, of course, but it would only be chivalrous to allow penitent outlaws to serve under a lord - even if they were never outlaws to begin with, and they get paid. And it also hearkens back a little to Bertrand the Brigand.

How do you think Settra would react to an honest-to-god ambassadorial envoy from the Empire? Go all "SETTRA DOES NOT SERVE" on them, or actual try and hear them out?
>>
>>55240833
They can sense the world around them somehow. Not with fleshy bits, obviously, but somehow, otherwise they'd be an army of blind, deaf guys stumbling around, which by the way I totally endorse for the hilarity. Anyway, if they have magic senses, why wouldn't a magic spell magically screw with those senses?
>>
>>55241226
Well it all realy depends i assume Settra would atleast hear them out as he is a self respecting king.
>>
>>55241136
Honestly, I'd want to see a "Shepard's" choice for that. Essentially, while Bretonnians don't hire mercenaries, they DO hire shepards to watch their flocks. And said shepards have to be really good at doing things like scouting, spotting threats, and reporting said threats to their lord. They also might be skilled at skirmishing with enemies, and sometimes a single flock will have a group of "shepards" for extra protection, and sometimes the "flock" is a single sheep. The pay is pennies, but sometimes Bretonnian nobles "lose" bags of gold right in front of the Shepards.

It's a bit of fluff specific to Carcassonne, but I could easily see it spreading to the rest of the kingdom. In the game, they'd likely be ranged skirmishers with actually decent armor but unable to use the General's (or any Knights, since they'd be lacking the Peasant's Duty) leadership.
>>
>>55241226
I think of how China reacted to the first attempts of Europeans to set up diplomatic relations - only in this case, when Settra tells you that you're a petty little kingdom and you should kowtow to him, there's some legitimacy behind it.
>>
>>55241317
Except that, discounting Nehekhara's pedigree, I don't think it's tremendously bigger than the Empire. Of course Settra wouldn't see it that way, but still.

I wonder if he ever looks over his kingdom of dust and bones and tries to remember how it felt to rule the living.

Yes.

There was an old undead mercenary regime with esqueletons of efves, dwarves, orks, etc. So, I'd say that any race can be summoned, but there are only human miniatures
>>

Kislevites don't mind women fighting in their militaries, though it's still mostly men.

Mostly to save cost on modeling, but IIRC the handwave reason is that humans are naturally easier for a human necromancer to resurrect, though they can bring up other undead.

I think Dwarfs might be more difficult to resurrect, their magic resistance in life carries over to their body in death, though its not impossible. That would be why there aren't hordes of Dwarf zombies and skeletons though.

I think in TW WH they mentioned a grudge about a vampire who forced some zombie dorfs to enact a really shitty play.

I've never read books on him or anything, but it seems pretty clear cut to me: his dad was a pretty badass dude, even for cursing his entire bloodline. Malekith himself was a really cool dude, but he was always kind of stuck in his dad's shadow and his mom really wanted him to be more like his dad. He was going to get glory, but he became convinced it wasn't the respect and glory that he really deserved.

So he's going to kill all the High Elves, sit on the throne of the Pheonix King, and realize that he'd wanted to be Pheonix King because he thought that would finally give him the love he'd always wanted, and he'll start fucking bawling.

Wrong, Malekith wanted to PK title not for the power and glory, he wanted it because only he knew how to defeat Chaos.

TW:WH 2 just brought that home for me in less than two minutes of trailer. "We all want exactly the same thing, and we're going to kill each other to get it!" Screw Archaon, the Care Bears could've destroyed the Old World with those fuckwits on the other side.
>>
>>55243879

The thing that worries me is that the Skaven were a big, obvious, horribly kept 'secret' that everyone knew about the moment the rat was at the end of the TWW2 trailer. But there's been absolutely nothing about the Tomb Kings.

By TWW3 there's probably going to be a 'Last Chance' list of factions that haven't gotten in yet, I swear.

Minor factions
>>
>>55244761
Well, aside from the Norscans - arguably - pretty much every faction that was in TWW1 was in there from the begninning. There was a minor faction in place of the Von Carsteins, and the Bretonnians still needed fleshing out, but that was pretty much it. If the Tomb Kings were going to be in there, you think they could have slapped together a really basic faction like they did with Bretonnia.

I forgot. But in their case it was just an empty area, right? There was no stand-in faction.

Maybe they just want the entire map figured out completely before they add any more factions and need to throw in a few standins for that, I don't know. It'd suck to have half the Southlands just be empty. But it's hard to shake this growing concern that they could just easily leave it like that, and never make an Araby or Tomb Kings at all. Especially Araby, since otherwise Bretonnia has absolutely no presence.

>>

Those are AI factions. Either just to fill space until they get TK or Araby done, or to act as starting enemies for whatever factions begin there. Like how the Empire starts with the Secessionists or VC with Tempelhof and so on.
>>
>>55245118
Norsca in TW is basically just another WoC.

>>55245157

In the sense that it's a Chaos aligned faction but they sure as hell aren't in terms of campaign mechanics. I still find it very hard to see Norsca gets in yet Tomb Kings do not. Where exactly is this concern coming from? SEGA/CA clearly love their DLC, they won't pass this up

>>55245370
Probably more concerned with making it fun to play in rather than of the proper size. Even the Empire sometimes feels a little too large when you have to cross from one end to the other - imagine having to get across from Lustria to the Southlands, or a far part of Ulthuan to Naggaroth. I can't say I like it, and I wish that it had been slapped over the main campaign map on some level, but what can you do?

The most fun I've had are with the corner-style maps, probably because it's not just one long line of enemies but two 'fronts.'
