Starfinder General /sfg/

Why isn't your android mechanic putting an artificial personality in her brain-mounted custom rig for social skills?

Because it's too busy being the snarky inner monologue helping him to uncover various clues and what not and causing him to talk aloud so people look at him strangly
>>
>>54976796
So it has a tier equal to half your level, but gets bonuses equal to twice its tier right? So the bonus will always be equal to your level, or one less than?

Is there any way to improve this? Seems like it'd be pretty shit for social skills before even considering any roleplay obstacles it'd run into.
>>
GM screen?
>>
>>54976987
It's not great compared to someone actually putting in an investment, but if nothing else it can take over for you when absolutely necessary if you're a low CHA degenerate who can't into people at all. Or just give you +2 through Aid Another. Don't even need it up to tier for that one.
>>
>>54976987
There isn't any way to improve it yet but it basically adds 4 Skill points per level, though only to Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Sense Motive and treats them as non-class skills with no ability modifier. On the up side it costs practically nothing, as hardened would be redundant since if you has it implanted it can't be damaged and if you are concerned about it getting hacked you are going to buy a better security upgrade than the free one you could potentially get in place of the AP/VI.
>>

Mind you, with the skill scaling in this game the chance of actually passing something on-level is basically nill. Starfinder's skill scaling is nonsense.

>>
>>54977503
A fusion is a weapon quality, but they exist as discrete items. They can be applied to and removed from weapons with a bit of work.

Fusion SEALS are the same, but cost 10% more. In exchange they can be swapped around with I think no work at all

That's a totally fucking confusing, arbitrary, and pointless distinction.

We're talking about magical weapon augments that would be implausible even if they weren't fictional. Arbitrary is to be expected.

What reasons are there to make an Exocortex Mechanic instead of a Drone Mechanic?

As far as I can tell, all you can use it for is to:
>Make yourself a worse Soldier against a limited number of targets.
>Reroll a knowledge check once per day and get the Skill Focus feat.
>Use the Computers skill faster than you normally can or without spending any actions on it.
>Give yourself a limited number of drone modifications.

>>

Your Droid can be built to look like an animal.

If you're talking about an actual meaty animal companion chromed out? You can already domesticate animals with the Survival skill, however animals commonly domesticated are not listed.
>>
>>54978543
I don't think there's anything RAW or RAI that'd stop you from running your combat drone as a quadruped mech-beast is there? I don't think extra legs protect you against trip, and I don't think drone weapon mounts require arms.

I think in my mind I'm thinking of something more than just the Mechanic's Drone. Then again I don't know what you could do to make a cyber'd animal any more different or relevant than saying a drone just looks like an animal for sake of apperance. I was thinking it would be the basis for an Archetype but it's a pretty shallow idea when you think on it and is probably best left as feat or something.
>>
>>54978643
just fluff the drone and say you cyborged an animal into it

>>54978737

I pretty much said that. After thinking about it there really isn't a way to make it any different from a drone that is made to look that way as it wouldn't matter mechanically.

I would guess having a meat brain instead of a cyber brain would make it so it could use morale bonuses but I think there is an Envoy ability that allows them to give morale bonusses to things that wouldn't normally be able to receive them.

August - Core book, AP 1, basic terrain & space mats, gm screen, character sheet folio, combat/initiative pad, crb pawns
September - Condition Cards
October - Bestiary, AP 2, Cantina map
November - Bestiary pawns
December - AP 3, Starship map
January - [nothing]
February - AP 4
March - Setting

Low-level feats (i.e. feats apart from the likes of Enhanced Resistance) for soldiers are so weak in Starfinder that Weapon Focus, of all feats, is actually a good purchase.

One of the main weaknesses of soldiers is that they have an abundance of feats, but so few are the feats that are actually worth taking.

If you are a Blitz soldier, I would advise Weapon Focus and either Cleave or Improved Initiative. Presumably, you will be paying credits for a tactical pike, since a 1st-level character can purchase 2nd-level items without issue. Cleave, therefore, might see some use.

Improved Initiative is not as valuable in Starfinder due to the somewhat padded-sumo-like combat (yes, even at 1st level) and the lack of flat-footed-ness for having yet to act. Still, it is a solid feat.

So reading through the crb, one it's a shame the augmentations are so limited, and two even wit the inclusion of Hybrid items there's no hybrid augmentations.

I'm thinking of picking though old 3.5 books for ideas for magitek augmentations.

Last week I made a post asking for a couple of people to complete my group, and I promised I'd share the party composition here when it was done. Well, we had our first game today and I'm going to keep my word. No storytime yet, since there's not much to say storywise so far. Also, writing this from memory so expect some errors.

First we have Vicks, human ace pilot envoy, an ex-military turned pilot for hire, with a happy-go-lucky attitude and a carefree outluck on life.

Then we have Rozog, the vrsk mercenary soldier, who until recently worked as private security for the spaceship the party met at. His goals in life are to grow huge and use heavy weaponry. So far he's accomplishing both.

PNK-1K is next, an AI that overtook an old robot and grew sentient (android technically). She's the party's soldier sharpshooter. After her originally crew went missing, she took to streaming her work on space twitch along with the next party member.

Ash, human operative outlaw, she was a security officer of the ISP (in setting human goverment) until her habit of livestreaming her combat missions got her fired. Now she enjoys travelling with PNK trying to become e-celebs while hoping to get a side project smuggling guns and tech to underdeveloped planets.

Last is Seth, human technomancer and a career military man, he's on a mission to explore the ISP controlled space and study their customs for his Empire. What the Empire hopes to gain from said intelligence remains to be seen.

That's it for now. Might share how their adventure begins next week or the one after that depending on how much progress they make next session.

>Presumably, you will be paying credits for a tactical pike, since a 1st-level character can purchase 2nd-level items without issue. Cleave, therefore, might see some use.
tactical pike seems to just be the go-to for "level 1 character melee weapon", is there any reason to get anything else that isn't roleplay or saving credits?
also, if i don't plan on using reach weapons past that, should i grab improved initiative instead?

>Bio-mechanical armor and bio-mechanical augmentations.
>>
>>54980786
Does Starfinder have Power Attack? Do you still get a 1.5x STR damage when two-handing a weapon?

Frankly, I need to know everything there is to know about melee combat in Starfinder, because I'm interested in trying it out yet I don't know just how much is different from Pathfinder melee combat.
>>
>>54980881
Power attack was rolled into deadly aim and significantly nerfed. 1.5x is a feature rather than baseline, but you get more damage out of features more and the damage from strength is far less important.
>>
>>54980994
So, the pain of using a one-handed sword is much less than in Pathfinder? I like it!
>>
What's the point a mechanic NOT having their custom rig as a cybernetic augmentation? I don't see why you would want to take up an armor add-on slot thing and I definitely don't see why you would want to make it a handheld computer you can easily lose.
>>
>>54981311
After you get an AI you can give it instructions and let it read back to others on your instruction. More secure than passing a note.
>>
>>54981311
According to the cybernetics section, you can only have one thing in each slot. So if you put it in your arm, you can't put anything else there.

There's no downside to putting it in your head right now, since datajacks are the only brain slot thing right now, but that might change in the future.
>>
>>54981387
I think datajacks can be combined with rigs as an exception too can't they?
>>
>>54981413
That's why I said 'no downside' bud.
>>
is max perception required on combat munchkins, or what else should a soldier invest in, that does more in combat?
>>
>>54981511
You should never not put max ranks into perception.
Athletics, Acrobatics, Bluff, and Perception are the "might roll it in combat" skills.
Possibly add Medicine to the list if you don't have a Mystic on the team to cast Stabilize for you.
>>
>>54981387
I can't figure out how this works flavor-wise. Custom rigs count as pretty much every kind of tool. If I need a screwdriver, how does an implant in my brain help me?
>>
>>54981667
If I had to explain it, I'd say that the tools still sprout from like your wrist or whatever.

But because the bulk of it, the actual computer bit, is inside your head, there's enough space for another thing in that arm.

So the discussion about how much a Ysoki can carry in their cheek pouches from the last thread go me curious (and also because I'm an autist who can't visualize what 1 cubic foot looks like), but this confirms that either the Ysoki can easily carry 10 pistols and/or grenades in their cheeks.

>>54981850
Not 10. 19 pistols or grenades. L is 1/10 bulk, but it doesn't count until it's a full set of 10. Unless that's been specifically changed, you can almost but not quite double the fun through the power of rounding.

Of course they considered it, anon. Due to living in magically unstable areas of the Darklands for generations, ratfolk now have miniature pocket dimensions in their mouths.
>>
>>54981916
Now I'm trying to decide on what the cutoff point is before the fact that they've got a worryingly large amount of unidentified items becomes blatantly obvious.
>>
>>54981936
What if they actually had pocket dimensions inside their mouths, though? The bag of holding - I mean null-space chamber, that's bulk L too, so you can put 19 of those in your mouth. And at the maximum level, that's 200 bulk each, or 2009 grenades.

It would cost just under 5,000,000 just for storage, but a Ysoki could have 38,171 grenades in their mouth.

>>54982155
If I had to ballpark something, I'd say half-full just to be lazy. Adjust up or down to taste - maybe 1/3 or 2/3 full, as you like.
>>
>>54981039

So has anyone else noticed that there's zero fucking reason to ever have a stat at 17?

Because of how statboosting from levels works now, Boosting a 17 will get you 18, but boosting a 16 will also get you an 18.

It's a cursed number.

But on the other hand, your fucking theme bonus means that you'll have a random-ass odd number floating around your stats. So unless you want that odd number to hound you for fucking ever, you need to boost a stat that's 17 or higher at least once.

You get an even number of pointbuy, personal upgrades are even, and unless you want to have a random odd number in your stats, you need to boost an odd number at least once, but for that to work THAT NUMBER NEEDS TO BE SEVENTEEN BECAUSE 15 IS TOO LOW AND 19 IS TOO HIGH

Plus, if you do take 17 for you main stat, then boost it each time... it will be 5 points higher from levelling. So 22. But this doesn't stop you levelling up OTHER things as well, because you get four increases...

Fuck me I'm giving myself a headache.

Captcha: Only Stressless

Goddamnit.

So someone makes a good point on the paizo forums...

Look at the statblocks for NPC ships.

A tier 2 BMC mauler has +12 to attack. That's 6 higher than a PC with +4 dex can do.

How in the fuck does a level 2 gunner have +12 to attack.

Correct. Two-handing gives you access to better weapons, though.

>e Normal: Using Bluff to create a distraction allows only you to attempt a Stealth check to hide

>>
>>54984040
You won't succeed either at higher levels, even if it's against a group of complete mooks

You're doing this check against the higher of their sense motive or of 15+CR*1.5, so say you're level 12, that's a minimum of DC 33, with -5 to your roll per ally.
>>
>>54984067
Yeah they're not gonna do that. Plus the augmentations right now don't work. Unless an item specifically calls out affecting crew rolls, even that +6 dex implant could be argued to have no effect in ship combat.

CLASS BUILDS
Following the explanation of a class's features are four
examples of ways to build the class. These are examples of
some of the choices you could make to create a specific kind
of character, designed to help you think about different ways
of playing the same class.
Theme: This is an appropriate theme for the class build.
Ability Scores : This entry notes which ability scores are
most important for the build.
Class Choices : Many classes offer multiple choices within
certain class features (such as envoy improvisations and
mechanic tricks). These entries list some appropriate choices
for the build, ordered by the earliest level at which you can
take each option.
Spell s: Choices of spells that are particularly suited to the
build are listed by spell level.
Feats: Useful feats are listed alphabetically.
Skills: These are the skills that best complement the build.

I don't actually know why RPG book writers assume we start from page 1 and read forward. I've never done that. Regardless, that's on p59.

10 PB is only enough to get a 16 in one attribute, and 14 in another, this makes it equal to 15 PB in Pathfinder.

15 PB is widely criticized by pretty much everyone since forever, 20 PB and preferably 25 PB is much more favorable (14 and 18 PB respectively.)

>>54991098

>>
>>54991117
Starfinder isn't Pathfinder. I intend to start at a higher PB for my games, but the logic here is a mess. The numbers are arranged differently and it's far far less important to have a few 12s or 14s starting in your tertiery attributes.
>>
>>54982359
That's one of the reasons I'm working up some tactical shields, basically small and large riot shields. I don't want to mess with balance too much, so I'm making it a reaction for +1 to KAC or EAC (depending on the type of shield used) for the small ones, or a +2 for the large ones, applied after knowing the attack roll. The large ones can also be used as a move action to create cover on one face of your space.

Stamina is good for keeping people alive, and even if you go down you're incredibly less likely to die than in Pathfinder.

An 18/14 starting array shines at 1st through 4th level, and then 10th through 14th level.

A 16/16 starting array is more optimal from 5th to 9th level, and then 15th to 19th level.

Choose your starting array based on the levels you expect to realistically play at.

>>54990673

>Sacrificing a feat for +1 damage is stupid no matter how you look at it.

If this is about single-classed solarians (why you would want to play one compared to a solarian dipping soldier [blitz], I would not know, but let us say you do regardless) starting at 1st level, consider the following.

• 1st-level human solarian with Strength 18, Dexterity 14, Heavy Armor Proficiency, Weapon Focus, and hidden soldier armor:
Melee attack bonus +6, melee damage bonus +4, EAC 15, KAC 17, initiative +2, speed 25 feet

• 1st-level human solarian with Strength 16, Dexterity 16, Improved Initiative, Weapon Focus, and kasatha microcord I:
Melee attack bonus +5, melee damage bonus +3, EAC 15, KAC 17, initiative +6, speed 30 feet

I valued the +1 attack and +1 damage over the +4 initiative and +5 speed in this case. Attack bonuses are important.

Strength 16 vs. Strength 18 is not just about +1 damage; it is about +1 attack as well.

>single-classed solarians (why you would want to play one compared to a solarian dipping soldier [blitz]
Enlighten me, what's wrong with them?
>>
>>54991618

They're the second worse class in the game for a large multitude of reasons, not the least being 'low damage, low defenses, no out of combat utility, get a choice of either be effective at your job or have resolve points'...
>>
>>54991618
>>54991653

Oh, solarians actually have a remarkably good damage output. Stellar Rush lets them enter the fray quickly, and Plasma Sheath and Corona contribute greatly to damage.

You want to start with a level in soldier (blitz) for Strength- or Dexterity-based Resolve Points to let you safely dump Charisma, heavy armor proficiency to save you a feat, and +4 initiative and +10 speed. Later, you can even take two more levels of soldier for a bonus combat feat and Melee Striker, giving you half your Strength bonus as extra melee damage.
>>
>>54991653
And the worst is the Envoy? That seems to be the meme.

I did notice that the damage progression for the in-build melee weapon seemed a bit poor. Specifically, it seemed a bit Monk.

I'm still learning the game. Tell me the Mechanic is good. I like the theme for the Exocortex variant.
>>
>>54991729

I should say 'low damage if they use their class feature that is supposed for be for dealing damage (solar weapon)' that is.
>>
>>54991737

Envoy is the worst.

Mechanic is good!

Exocortex is trash.
>>
>>54991729
>let you safely dump Charisma
Right, so I'm seeing references to this Key Ability Score concept, but I haven't fully understood that yet. Starting as a Soldier lets you make STR your key attribute, but how does that make a Soldier 5/Solarian 5 better than a Solarian 5/Soldier 5?
>>
>>54991764
>Exocortex is trash.
Aw.

Is it the Action Economy? I just personally don't really like the idea of having a helper follow me around. I don't like Druids either.
>>
>>54991818

Action economy isn't really the major thing, the problem is that Exocortex just makes you a discount soldier. So... you might as well just go be an actual soldier, instead of a mechanic trying to mimic one.
>>
>>54991737
>>54991818

>I like the theme for the Exocortex variant.

The problem with the exocortex is that using the exocortex's accuracy function decreases your action economy, whereas having a drone around *increases* your action economy. Also, the exocortex's 5th-level feature is terribly narrow.

The optimal mechanic is an android mechanic with Longarm Proficiency at 1st and Versatile Specialization at 3rd, a hover drone (see the FAQ for hover drones using regular weapons) working its way towards longarms by 3rd, and a brain-mounted custom rig with an artificial personality for social skills.

>>54991792

As per the multiclassing rules in pages 26 and 27, if you have at least one level in soldier regardless of when you take that level, you can use Strength or Dexterity for Resolve Points.

You want to take soldier (blitz) as your first level as a would-be solarian simply for the more front-loaded starting package: Strength or Dexterity for Resolve Points, heavy armor, +4 initiative, and +10 speed.

Why do scifi and fantasy games always completely ignore bayonets and then go on and fellate retarded "muh Drizzt" dual wielding fantasies?
>>
>>54991887
I... disagree with this. It turns you into a discount soldier /in combat/, but you have way more going for you out of combat.
>>
>>54991928

And the drone mechanic can do all of that out of combat and more, because the drone is also additional out of combat utility. There is no reasn to be an exocortex mechanic over a drone mechanic. There just isn't any benefit at all to it.
>>
>>54991928

Or, you could have a flying drone backing you up and shooting with its own longarm.
>>
>>54991747
Solar weapon is fine. After the first 5 level range it's the strongest one-handed melee weapon, before then it barely loses out but saves some cash and gives you narrative options, and at high levels it very barely falls behind the absolute best two-handed options.
>>
>>54991990

It does not 'save some cash', since you desperately need solarian weapon crystals, which cost on par with weapons of those levels.
>>
>>54991891
>You want to take soldier (blitz) as your first level as a would-be solarian
And then you go for the weapon or the armour? Seems like you have to give up some sort of conventional equipment for one or other of these to make use of that class feature, either heavy armour or a standard 2h melee weapon.

>exocortex's 5th-level feature is terribly narrow.
Am I misreading that one, or does Wireless Hack not let you hack? Hacking is a full action and Wireless Hack gives you free actions for hacking, but they're measured in standard actions.

Or, you can spend 475 credits on a tactical pike and enjoy 1d8 damage and reach.

Reach is quite effective in Starfinder, given that it allows you to attack adjacent opponents. Threatening ranged attackers with reach is rather effective.

I might be spoiled by other RPGs, but why isn't there a DEX melee weapon that isn't a dinky little dagger? Not even a single Advanced Melee Weapon with the Finesse/Operative tag. An advanced non-heavy sword in this setting, for instance? Perhaps some sort of light Saber?

Or ignoring the obvious pun, there's always the flexible option. Sometimes it's called a monofilament whip, other times it's a monomolecular lash, but it's always terrifying to friends and enemies. Seems like an odd omission.

Still not an Operative one, though.

In the event that someone absolutely, positively insists on playing a solarian at 1st-level and likewise insists on Strength 16 and Dexterity 16, what good feats are there for the character to take, really?

Weapon Focus, Improved Initiative, Cleave, and, depending on the party composition, Coordinated Shot are just about the best such a character can manage. Even then, Cleave works best with characters who have as high an attack bonus as possible; it would be better placed on a solarian or a soldier who started with Strength 18.

>PF didn't have a bayonet at first
>when they finally added them they don't let you fire your weapon with a bayonet fixed
>not just giving a accuracy or reload penalty
>SF doesn't even give rules for it

Paizo apparently has an aversion to people screaming "FIX BAYONETS." They also don't have rules for underbarrel grenade launchers or shotguns. Or any other weapon attachments for that matter. I'm generally disappointed by the lack of crap I can put on my gun to make it do different things.

Base weapon variety is also pretty crap, they don't even have machine pistols or handcannon revolvers. And speaking of revolvers, you STILL can't "fan the hammer" and fire six shots in six seconds (in PF you can't fire all six shots in one round without magical assistance while also being high level) unless you have an automatic (and the rules for that are also dumb). And the rules for two guns are lame, I really wanted to go full-retard and/or gunkata with two pistols. At the very least Operative (Daredevil) lets you John Woo all over the place with acrobatic trick shots.
>>
>>54991764
So why is Envoy the worst?

I thought they were supposed to be like a "Space Bard" but sans magic. They get as many skills as the Operative + they have Diplomacy as a class skill. All Operative really seems to get over them is the Dirty Trick attack, but that doesn't seem that great. Can you guys enlighten me as to why operative is so bad?

>>
>>54992903

They actually get two skills LESS than the operative, due to the operative getting skill focus with two skills for free that alos gives 1 rank/level in them, effectively making the operative a 10+int class.

Also the Envoy's improvisations are basically universally trash.
>>
>>54992903

The operative has *10* skill points per level, a scaling bonus to initiative and to all skills, Skill Focus in two skills (sadly, this does not stack with Operative's Edge), and Trick Attack as a source of damage. The operative is a juggernaut both in and out of combat. It helps that the FAQ has yet to touch the operative (ghost), so even from 1st to 6th level, a halfling or ysoki operative can have an obnoxiously high bonus for trick attacks.

Trick attack damage is non-negligible and can be a major source of extra damage.

The envoy has a few decent noncombat tricks (e.g. Well Informed for intel omniscience), but the action economy of its combat improvisations is simply awful. It should not cost a move action just to apply a +1 morale bonus to attack rolls against a single enemy.
