You pay the cost all at once. Once you've tapped your artifacts and paid your mana then Whir of Invention is on the stack and if you sac the artifact you imrpovised with then it will have no effect on the spell you just cast. After the cost is paid it is paid and the spell cannot be uncast.

There is plenty of opportunity to do anything instant speed inbetween those two events, that's how and why counterspells work.

In the same vein though, it's not hard to build Marchesa to protect yourself from getting hit (and in fact, getting Monarch stolen gives you something to either steal it back with OR help defend it via her trigger). With Mathias, good luck stopping your opponents from benefiting.

And also, Marchesa MIGHT draw all your opponents 1 card for each card you get, if they poke each other in turn order for the Monarchy. Mathias ensures that your opponents are drawing N-1 cards (where N is the number of opponents) between them to your 1 each time. That's lopsided against you.

So I've been playing a Jund Vial-Smasher deck. I know I need Crucible, but I do have the new Crucible creature. I play like 40 lands and a bunch of ramp, and all of the Amonkhet Jund cyclers as well as the Onslaught ones. Terramorphic, Evolving Wilds, windswept heath, wooded foothills, might do marsh flats, and almost all of the fetchable non-ABUR duals. I also have Burgeoning, Splendid Reclamation, Nissa's Rev, the classic commander ramp spells, Rampaging Baloths, Akoum Hellkite, Tireless Tracker, Mina and Denn, and Courser of Kruphix.

I ordered a Lotus Cobra and Exploration as well. What are some good pay off cards for this type of deck that is just trying to get in a shitload of lands to play? I have Bonfire, cut///ribbons (which won me the game last night), craters claws and some other expensive CMC or X spells. But I'm wondering if anyone has some sort of sekrit t3ch.

need help dealing with Titania (somewhat-competitive multiplayer edh [2 of the players are casuals])

a friend of mine has a very good build where by turn 2/3 he already has her out with some tokens and is going for 20+dmg and maybe he has strip mined some of your lands too in the process

the core of his build is a bunch of LD lands, fetches, ramps/tutors, no creatures other than avenger, craterhoof, witness and fucking sylvan safekeeper

by experience board wiping/removal are not viable options since Titania can be recasted next turn (most likely), and essentially ramping 1 mana + making (at least) 1 token everytime she enters the bf

not to mention cheap ass tooth and nail combo fuck every neckbeard green player likes to use

stax/taxing usually don't work because he's always ramping, fetching, sol 'ringing'... almost always ahead mana wise

only decks I can kind of slow him down are my zur or brago deck, where I tutor for rest in piece to screw with his fetch recursion or tutor for nevermore and name titania and hope he doesn't have a fucking krosan grip or something like that

he usually wins like 5 out of 10 games (in a 4 to 5 people games), most of the other aggro players don't stand a chance against him, and usually the other five games are won by me and the other midrange/control/combo dude

kinda relevant info: this guys likes to try and kill me first every game, sometimes people help me, but often times they mind their own business and try to win while I'm being focused (with no success)

so, any advices on how to stop this fucking train wreck? not that me and the others get mad when we lose (we are all very good friends), but everyone seems to be getting dismotivated by this and I think we might need some opinions and suggestions from outside the group

Its a complaint about how the Rules Committee manages the banlist. Theres so much busted stuff,usually expensive, out there that ruins games of EDH. Its mostly fast mana. This is less of an issue in established playgroups but for those of us that dont have one and only pick up games at the LGS its more of a pronounced issue.

It makes zero sense that the copied abilities would still retain the once per turn clause. The once per turn is on mairsil, not the abilities he gains, otherwise they should have templated with "these abilities gain: you may activate this ability only once per turn."
