How would a proper PC race of robots differ from the limp-wristed effort of Androids?

>>

Eh. Starships being level-based is wonky enough. Extending that to a class doesn't jive with me.

They'd be a type of construct for starters. Likely with immunity to normal diseases and poisons but vulnerable software viruses and maybe EMP and electrical attacks. Instead of normal food they'd either plug into an outlet when available or consume charges off a battery that cost and weighed a comparable amount to food for biological characters out in the field.
>>
So I had an idea for an Envoy, focused around Grappling and proximity to enemies to boost their allies attack rolls using stuff like Coordinated Shot, Get 'Em, etc. Are the bonuses you can stack up to attack rolls to aid an ally high enough to make it worth it?

What are all the robits from Aballon doing? I've had this idea that some started constructed humanoid forms and going out to gain experience to either become like or surpass the First Ones.
>>
I lowkey want /sfg/ to be a thing, I'm actually interested in Starfinder and I don't want to go into /pgg/ just for the main discussion to be "what role do kistunes play in your Starfinder setting fellow furries/weeaboos"

I don't mind a little anime or furfaggotry, but almost every time I go in there the big discussion going down is about a fetish, a furry race, an anime build, or all the above. I went into /pgg/ to discuss stuff about the game, but all it did was make me hate kitsunes and succeeded in making me sick of seeing catgirl pics.
>>
>>54927710
Same. I hate the personality culture that's developed on /pgg/. I'm not sure this thread is a good idea right now, but I hope as Starfinder ages and becomes a more distinct product from Pathfinder, we can have separate regular threads and not be held to /pgg/ traditions.
>>
>>54927699
>What are all the robits from Aballon doing?

They just sort of exist, there's some religious reverence for ruins left by their creators and a Robo-Court where Androids can go to get a 100% fair trial, but other than that? They're robutts doing robutt things.
>>
>>54927699
According to the book?
"Culturally, most Aballonian anacites fall into one of two
ideological groups. Members of the first group, Those Who
Wait, continue to upgrade themselves and stockpile wealth and
resources in the belief that the First Ones will eventually return
and that all of Aballon must be ready to receive them when they
do. Those Who Become, on the other hand, believe their destiny
is to take on the mantle of the First Ones and colonize new worlds
themselves, aiming their robotic seedships out toward the stars. "

So you could very well have a character that is acting as a sort of advanced scout getting a feel for where your people should go, what they are likely to deal with and building a network of contacts. This might not even interfere with adventuring since as an unaging robot you could be working on a directive to be doing that for years or decades before reporting back.

Alright boys! Let's get some discussion going in here before the next Pathfinder thread is also a Starfinder thread!

It's clear that the system we've got in front of us is going to be a bit closer to setting agnostic than Pathfinder. There're more ways to spread out your income during progression, the game isn't tied to the rigid structure where you absolutely need certain bonuses to advance, classes aren't so much tied to concepts like deities having magic that can be flavoured freely.

With this in mind, knowing that anywhere from steampunk to space opera to tech fantasy is viable, what kind of genres are you looking forward too? What medias are you going to be using as inspiration?

You're not alone in that regard.

>>
>>54927883
Depends, Ghost is a bit better at combat but Thief has a neat trick if your group doesn't just do the hack-n-slash thing 24/7.
>>
>>54927809
I'm looking forward to shipbuilding.

But a question arises regarding that.

Build points are a fairly good system for building ships, but I'm not fond of the whole 'it just levels up with you' thing.

So my question is, if you were going to put a credit/upb price on one build point, whereabouts would be a good place for it?
>>
>>54927710
Hell, I wouldn't mind it if it was just that. Even anime and furfaggotry is better than fapping over ERP games they're not even in and worshipping the biggest NEETs on the board as "celebrities".
>>
>>54927883
Ghost is definitely the better specialization. Until further notice, the +4 bonus on a DEX skill makes it the best trick attacking specialization and the 11th level ability gives you active narrative power, while the one on Thief assumes you're failing which makes it weaker. It's hard to judge exploits without more play information.

As a house rule, would it be better to remove the +4 on ghost, or add +4 to Daredevil and Thief?
>>
>>54927710
>>54927735
Agreed. Like, fuck it, people can do whatever they think is fun but the /pfg/ community is so cancerous that I really want nothing to do with anything that comes from it.
>>
>>54927978

I'm opposed to giving them spell progression. Any changes to accommodate them should impact the class identity as little as possible, both in regards to flavour and in regards to mechanical options.

I've been running playtests and while they are definitely on the weak side, I don't think either class needs as much help as most people do.
Solarian at least will have fine functionality with some numbers adjustment, and I might add some features as house rules at 5th and 15th.
Envoy definitely needs a bit, but I've had one in every game I've been a part of so far and while the performance is poor, the playstyle is satisfying and spell casting would introduce issues to it.

>>
>>54928860
The envoy is weak and a party doesn't need one, but I haven't had a single player complain about how it feels to play. The fact of the matter is that you're not really that good of a skill monkey, and your combat capabilities will be weak, but it's still a natural face class and the playstyle gives you fun abilities and varied turns on their action economy.

They do need a buff, but a lot of people are taking it the wrong way. Right now it's true that any party will probably benefit more from having a damage dealing operative or mechanic, even if they already have one of each, on their party line-up. Suggestions like giving them spellcasting changes their identity though and discourages you from using the interesting options they do have, which have a strong flavour and interesting interactions.

I got some cool ideas for the game when my copy shows up.

Generally, I throw out the official setting and draft something more to my tastes, but I'll start out at least in Starfinders because I'm learning it the same time as the players. At least until it annoys me...
>>
>>54928999
Space opera in the Pathfinder universe is right, but the system itself is more agnostic to general sci-fi than Pathfinder is to fantasy.

Still a d20 and suffers from some trappings of that and 3.X, but the core mechanics work out much better than they ever did in any version of 3.X. Unfortunately the rulebook is a rush job and there're a lot of minor errors, as well as awkward balance issues. Won't change your mind if you dislike d20 but it's less likely to frustrate you to hell like its predecessors often do.

Officially came out today, though it's been leaked for over a week.
>>
>>54928999
It's Pathfinder fast-forwarded several centuries (or may millenia, we don't fucking know because Paizo are hacks).

It takes inspiration from shit like Firefly primarily. and yes, it's the same core system as DnD 3.5 and Pathfinder, but they've actually balanced casters for once. I'd say if you liked the mechanics of the D20 system but hated how unbalanced Pathfinder and DnD 3.5 were, it may well be worth a look.

Solarian is almost simple; I'm fiddling with the idea of giving weapon solarians cha to attack and damage, and armor solarians cha to hp and ac.

As far as Envoy goes, I have... well, it's not a re-write, I'm referring to it as a 'bolt on' to their standard chassis.

The Discords are not a monolith, and perhaps the one cat-posted this thread right before the rest of the cat-posting began is a coincidence or misdirection, but there's no doubt that the prominent among some Discord aren't at fault here.

There're a lot of ways to shitpost but the celeb shit has only ever been relevant to the Discord, and more /pgg/ than it should be here. The world building project is a respectable endeavor putting aside some attention whores forcing themselves into it, but there's no business converting a barely conceptual setting meant for /pgg/ into Starfinder.

The BEST case scenario here is that there is in fact, some twat stirring shit to stop /sfg/ from being a thing, in which case I hate you for letting it get to this point. The worst case scenario is that the circlejerk has gotten bad enough that nothing remotely related to them can escape their grasps at attention, in which case I hate you for ever being born.

What do you like about Starfinder?

How would you feel about a 'Build A Robot' Race?
>>
Absalom Station has a population of 2.13 million. Why is this so pathetic a population for an entire star system's capital?

Why is every Eoxian NPC, even those outside of the Corpse Fleet, conveniently evil in both Dead Suns #1 and Into the Unknown? Is Animate Dead not supposed to be a neutral spell in Starfinder?

Why are there no less than four encounters with akatas in Dead Suns #1?
>>
>>54930591
I hate you, but in the interest of not being a pat of the problem: outside of bad numbers the rules seem competent enough that you can't easily fuck your late progression because of some level 1 traps and the range of campaigns that can be run looks good. The system looks to keep a lot of what I like about Pathfinder, that is having wide build options or at least the framework to have them in the future, without the bloat and far less broken rules that I hated.

I actually think androids are fine. They feel robotic enough to me mechanically, and the flavour won't matter much once you've started building a campaign or characters and have room to fidget with things. I do understand why people with a full robot race, but I'd be concerned about the mechanical implications of having a construct race. I'm not sure yet how much it'd impact play at large, but the treatment of androids as bioroids is probably for the best in making sure DMs don't have to bash their heads building with it in mind.

BUT ANYWAYS, FAGGOT. HOW ABOUT YOU? DO YOU HAVE AN OPINION ON STARFINDER AND BUILD A ROBOTS, OR DO YOU JUST SPEND ALL YOUR TIME GOADING PEOPLE TO JERK OFF INTO THE ABYSS?

Well, pondering it...

A robot race is easier shit to swing in Starfinder over Path, since there's a lot more that actually affects them. Yes, you're swapping out vulnerability to things like poison, but then you're becoming vulnerable to hacking and viruses and stuff.

I don't think it's that tricky.

If I get the new job, or if my schedule opens up, I'd like to run a game for my friends since I prefer Science Fantasy. I can choose between going hard or soft sci-fi with it without worry, and with so many species, I can make the scenes very colorful.

For example, imagine a High-Tech India or Brazil, a place with a really big river running through it, and all sorts of colorful Lamia and Reptile-folk pitching goods in the boats and by the rivers, AR drones floating overhead advertising goods and giving directions.

>Build A Robot
I'm not all that good with rules, since I tend to wing them, but being able to choose things like leg types (Humanoid, Quad, Wheeled, Hover) and them adding up to your Race bonus sounds cool to me.

So Solarions and Envoys are pretty bad, right? The two charisma classes?

The psychic feats and all spell-likes are also charisma though, so does that help? Would a Phrenic Adept Envoy or Solarion be better than a vanilla one?

Detect thoughts and Augury 1/day no components or resolve point seems like they would be pretty nice for an Envoy.
>>
>>54931451
I mean, it can be a stabilizer, but it disables use of your hands so while there's no mention of how it works, it's actually more like, and maybe more likely representing an armblade than it is some blade holder.

>>
>>54931346
Hover drones don't have the minimum strength to reliably use heavy weapons anyway, nor can it actually fly while carrying more than 3 bulk due to it's tiny strength.

You'd have to use a combat drone. Receive small arms as the free basic proficiency, use the combat drone weapon proficiency bonus on long arms, and then spend your first mod point at level 1 on heavy weapons. But the combat drone cannot fly until level 11.

If you still wanted a hover drone, you could always take your first mod as weapon proficiency (long arms) and then equip it with a laser rifle at level 1. The hover drone doesn't get any strength from progression, and cargo rack doesn't affect weapons, so it would never be capable of using heavy weapons effectively as written. It can lift off with some of the lighter energy-based heavy weapons you can get at higher levels, but it still takes a penalty to firing them.

Your best bet to make that as soon as possible is to use a combat drone with an artillery laser, give it an armor slot, and attach a jetpack to the armor slot at level 5. The jetpack is incredibly energy hungry, so you'd have to carry a pack of batteries to keep it fed, and have the drone use legs or treads or wheels when it's not flying. But this is only until you reach level 11 and can make your drone actually fly.

>>

>If you still wanted a hover drone, you could always take your first mod as weapon proficiency (long arms) and then equip it with a laser rifle at level 1.
cant even do that. you need 2 arms to use a long arm. gheeeeeeeettoo.

i think what i will do is start out with a combat droid then blow it up at lvl 3 or something, and build a new hover laser rifle drone
>>
>>54929537
giving the only two casters bard progression, and making Wish come from sacrificing two 6th level slots and a resolve point certainly didn't hurt.

Making sure all classes had something to do in addition to "I attack" helped too.

Reinstating AD&D-style "no concentration checks, if you're hit you just lose it" also helps immensely. That along forces a tank from "HP sponge you're not allowed to treat as expendable" to "the only thing between success and you being an effective commoner stabbed to death"

Concentration checks were a mistake.

Remember that in pathfinder, access to lost alientech was possible, and most alientech had capabilities on par with magic, acting as a great equalizer when available.
They were just only really available in Numeria, nearly always in awful condition, and took a lot of feats to become proficient in because it's not assumed you know how to use all that stuff.

In starfinder, you ARE that alien society. It IS assumed you know how to use it, so no feats required, and it is EVERYWHERE.

In fact, not only is it true for equipment and items, many classes (e.g. Mechanic) that would have been accomplished by casters (e.g. Summoner) are now accomplished with technology by a mundane.

This, plus magic becoming more standardized, commercialized, and accessible leads to a very blurred line between the mundane and magical.

I haven't found something I'm happy with yet for envoys and haven't gotten to playtest any potential houserules. My issue with spellcasting is that it goes against their flavour and discourages them from using the features they do have. You'd end up with a CHA caster that's weaker at casting than the competition due to its main attribute and no relevant class features, arguably a worse spot than it's in currently.

The problems that actually need to be addressed, based off of the playtesting I've done, is that envoy isn't strong as a damage dealer, but the utility it has, while satisfying, isn't strong enough to justify using over dealing damage in most cases.

The rule of thumb for intimimancy in Pathfinder was something along the lines of shaken reducing enemy efficiency by 10%, so you should only apply it if it won't reduce your efficiency by more than that. Right now if you say that a standard action is worth half of your turn, dispiriting taunt trades half your turn for 10% of an enemy.

Basically, I think that the best way to fix the envoy is to enable better use of its features rather than "replace" them. Changing every feature would require a large rewrite, and further rewrites as supplements come out, but some extra rule like allowing improvisations on reaction could help.

I think what he is talking about is how when your party levels up, so does your ship and everything gets harder to do on that ship regardless of how you spend the points it got from leveling up. For example if you spent those extra BP to upgrade the ICM part of your ships computer (which just gives bonuses to a number of actions a round) every skill check for using your ship goes up by 2 even piloting which is entirely unrelated to what you changed on your ship.

What are some cool things computers can be used for? The book says they can operate weapons, turrets, and other things with their tier as their attack bonus and tier*2.5 as their skill bonus.

Can people with low attack modifiers use computers to aim their guns for them? What should shoulder-mounted turrets operated independently by computers? What kinds of skill checks can computers realistically be used for?
>>
>>54932458
>does that make it immune to trips?
Combat Maneuvers are melee attacks against KAC+8. EVERYTHING is effectively immune to trips.
>>
>>54932694
I know what he's talking about.

The BP increases for buying the computer. This applies penalties to the DC. But the cumputer gives bonuses too.
The computer bonuses outstrip the penalties. But only for the tasks it is helping. Otherwise it's obviously.harder.
>>
>>54932694

>>
>>54932734
>tier*2.5 as their skill bonus.
wait.... wait, can you just let normal computers pilot your ship for you?
That gets around all the crazy tierx2 DCs. All you need is a computer tiered at 85% that of your ship on every station.
>>
>>54932763
worse, Grapple is KAC+13.
>>
>>54932790
>The computer bonuses outstrip the penalties.
Actually it doesn't. The best computer gives a max of +10 on two check per round. Going from level 1 to 20 increases the DC on ALL checks by 38. Even if we assume the bare minimum of checks of two (one piloting check and one gunnery check), account for the +19 skill ranks in piloting and assuming you max the relevant ability score (going from and 18 to 28 so +5) you are a net -4 in the hole.
>>
>>54932790
>>54932799
>>54932864
To illustrate here is a handy visual break down of the DC versus maximum possible bonuses currently. There are tabs on the bottom for different compute levels. And I stress the +10 compute can only be used on 2 check per round, and if you have 4 people acting on a ship that's two people with out the computer bonus.

>>54933522

As far as raw mechanical efficiency is concerned, it seems to me that the most optimal mechanic build for killing people while also being a skill monkey is an android mechanic with a hover drone. Both the mechanic and the drone work towards Longarm Proficiency and Versatile Specialization/Weapon Specialization (longarms) by 3rd level, and the mechanic spams Overcharge with cheap batteries. Use an artificial personality in a brain-mounted custom rig for social skills.

This results in a two-unit firing line with a good action economy and solid damage on each hit.

I would not bother with an exocortex due to how using it *diminishes* action economy (move actions) rather than improving action economy.

>>54933522

>autohacking

The exocortex's 5th level is essentially a dead level due to how the custom rig already works.
>>
>>54933597
That hack doesn't cost any actions. And if you're using that and hacking it yourself, you hack twice as fast.
>>
>>54933391
>if you're doing "max tier is APL."
"Step 2: Determine tier and Build Points. If you are creating
a PC starship, determine the characters’ APL by adding
together the characters’ levels and dividing by the number
of characters. That number is their ship’s tier. If designing
enemy starships, decide the difficulty of the encounter (see
Designing Starship Encounters on page 326) and choose the
enemy ship’s tier. Once you know the tier of the ship, consult
Table 9–1: Starship Base Statistics to determine the number
of Build Points you can spend to create the starship. Note
that a starship receives a boost to its Hull Points equal to its
HP increment at tiers 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20."

The book literally tells you that you player's ship's tier should be the APL of your party.

they do IN THE FUTURE

Trig used to be an upper division college subject, now they teach it in middle school.

Genetics used to be known only by scholastic monks experimenting with botany, now my niece is being taught the concept of recessive traits through magic schoolbus.

When robots become cheap as dirt and common as dogs, autoshops WILL be what professors are now.

Best I can tell, a Mechanic's Drone is basically the future man's equivalent of an armed arduino project, because if you break it own, it's just a battlebot with an AI jammed in there for good measure.

last (only?) time we had earth mentioned at all was Die Rasputin Die, right?
>>
>>54933686
Did you even read my original comment?
I was saying that you can fix the rules by saying "max tier" instead of just tier, that way simpler ships keep simpler checks.
>>
>>54934025
Yep. 1918, first world war, Rasputin Must Die was I think all we've gotten of Earth.

I also recall something about Earth being under a Divine Quarantine of some kind, so gods aren't allowed to go there anymore? It's why the Egyptian Gods upped stumps and schlepped off to Golarion.
>>
>>54934041
Ok, that wasn't very clear. But now we are talking about changing the rules to fix the system. So as pointed out, the Tier of a ship gives you a number of BP to spend. So a Tier 8 ships has 205 points. You cannot build a functioning ship if you spend 200 of those 205 point on just that one computer. And with how the BP system progresses you will never be able to afford a computer that completely compensates for DC increase advancing your ship's Tier and still equip it with sufficient defense, offense and navigation systems so that you won't be torn apart by and NPC ship with out completely overhauling the BP system, they crew action system or both.
>>
>>54934139
Really, the DC should just be fixed based on your ship's size and thrusters. Maybe the speed you're going at.
>>
>>54929426
Kinda got the idea to play as a Ysoki Operative, take all the computer skills and shut things the hell down before they even start.
>>
>>54934182
>Maybe the speed you're going at.
That's already sort of taken into account. Engines have both a speed rating and piloting modifier and the slow engines give a bonus while the fast ones give a penalty.
>>

>>54933979
Spy Drones are almost literally a level 1 flying drone before the mechanic gets a hold of it, and cost twice that of a basic cruiser, 2/3 a police cruiser.
so... 27,000 in modern cash? A police car is 42K after outfitting. A cheap new car is 15K. Seems about right.

A Swift Trainer Autonomous Drone costs 15K. It's self-piloting and has a survey-grade onboard camera.

So... a good bit more astounding than a hobby project.

It's by mid-levels it's on par with the stuff MIT is doing right now in terms of impressiveness.
>>
>>54934182
You want to know the horrifying part in this? It's not just piloting checks, it also the computer checks for scanning enemy ships, engineering checks to keep the ship running in a fight if damaged and diplomacy/intimidate checks to motivate the crew. All based off the tier of the ship regardless of what you spend those BP on.

The Draken are vicious warrior lizards with a codified sense of honor-basically the Vesk, albeit without their own imperial ambitions. The Mechari are sapient machines designed to act as ambassadors to various humanoid species and as guardians and spies for the Cassians-pretty much Androids with a more personable bent. The chua are highly intelligent rodentoids with a penchant for engineering, scientific experimentation, and extreme violence-basically more psychotic ysoki. And the Cassians are of course, human.

And I'm pretty sure the Alien Archive will have statblocks for arboreal vermin if for some reason you need an Aurin.

>>
>>54937561

Not very, I shouldn't think. There's undoubtedly monster statblocks that fit various zerg subspecies, and the classes and themes cover a lot of what the Terrans and Protoss have to offer, at least in terms of individual units. Might wait for the mech rules to drop if you want to get into things like Goliaths and Dragoons, though.

>>54937367

Because SF has a design philosophy that all race modifiers should add up to +2, so even if you get -4 Str, expect something crazy like +4 Dex, at which point you can just put 8 points into Str and end up with 14 Str and 14 Dex, pretty standard starting values in SF for a Soldier.
