It's not a state-based action; those are only created by game rules, not abilities. However, it still doesn't work. Reckoner triggers whenever a player casts a spell/activates an ability that targets one of your dragons, or the target of a spell or ability on the stack is changed to one of your dragons. Once the spell is on the stack, turning Scion into Reckoner will do nothing, because Reckoner is too late to see itself *becoming* the target.

It doesn't do a lot outside the cards from Lorwyn. You'd end up using auras and equipment to buff their toughness, making them just a more flavorful, less efficient deck than going full big butt. Also, Ikra does wonders with Doran on the field.

More like have Purph or tremors or maybe pandemonium down or Lab Man + Flash in the deck.

Anything that will let you skip a draw will also enable you to drop Lab Man as a sorcery. That's two "Words of" Enchantments, an active archmage ascension, Paralell Thoughts, Ring of Ma'ruf (even if you get nothing out of it), or Obstinate Familiar. Also, any instant speed permanent bounce anywhere in the deck lets you terminate the loop at will by bouncing Kindred and go to combat or drop lab man without flash or what have you.

Niv/Curiosity doesn't have quite as many angles of attack. With the basic combo itself you cap out at somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 damage -- enough to take out one player for sure, two unless one of them is a colossal lifegain faggot... three is starting to push it and if you have four opponents you're basically dead. True, you could Lab Man with all the same protection as TLG/New Hotness, but TLG isn't reliant on flashing out a Lab Man SSG into Firestorm letting you do it the turn you land your permanents is pretty cool, as are the options that are opened up by Impact Tremors and Purph. If you get Mana Echoes out you get a couple more kills. Simply put, having TLG as the combo core rather than Niv gives you a better threat saturation in your deck than just the Lab Man, and thus a better likelihood that something gets through to win it. And TLG without Kindred is probably a good deal stronger than Niv without Curiosity since niv's backup is minimal (I believe there's at least one other aura that will do the job) while TLG's backup plan is Skullclamp/Ashnods or Skullclamp/Mana Echoes or Teferi's Puzzle Box, Possibility Storm, Arjun, just fucking Wheels...

Firestorm works just as well in both, and as >>54767293 pointed out, any instant speed discard effects and an E-titan makes it go infinite (baring instant-speed yard removal, which is minimal). While you do have more options with TLG in the form of Impact Tremors/Purpheros, it's a more expensive combo to field at minimum 11 mana to the 7 of Niv.

Though I see your point. TLG/New Hotness has enough options it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. I'm not convinced it's better than Niv, but it's close enough that any difference is marginal in practice. Either way if people see you whip out either as commander they'll be fisting instant speed enchant hate the whole game.

Having a bit of a dilemma here.

I have a Uril voltron deck and an Oloro control deck. They're like opposite ends of the spectrum where one is really fast and based on attacking and the other slow as hell based on never attacking and rarely even casting creatures. I don't really have anything in the middle. No deck that just plays the game regularly (some creatures, some attacking, some spells, etc). It's weird.

I wanted to go to my LGS to start playing some commander but not sure what to go with. Control might just bore people to death and annoy them, also might be tough to control a whole new table of randoms, and voltron usually gets smacked down so I just sit there doing nothing. New deck perhaps? I thought a Prossh deck that abuses tokens would be fun. Sac them for various effects, can also attack with him, guaranteed token generator even if countered... There's a lot of interaction. Or I might just go there with Oloro.
