I'm trying to make a decently optimized ranged initiator that's more interesting than "boost+full attack". Is a Gunsmoke Mystic a viable option for this?

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Cloth Shirt" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Gambeson deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine Gambeson in France for 42,000 Euros (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even stop small arms fire with m gambeson

French armorers spend years working on a single katana and weaving it it up to a million times to produce the finest light armor known to mankind.

Gambesons are thrice as defensive as chainshirt armor and thrice as comfy for that matter too. Anything a hauberk can stop, a gambeson can stop better. I'm pretty sure a gambeson could easily block a knight wielding a war bow from 20ft away

Ever wonder why medieval Mongols never bothered conquering France? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined foot soldiers and their Gambesons of destruction. Even in French-Indian War, American soldiers targeted the men with the gambesons first because their defensive power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Gambesons are simply the best light armor that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Gambesons:

Now that seems a lot more representative of the defensive power of Gambesons in real life, don't you think?

The unchained monk and rogue are objective improvements over the core classes in that they both prop up the biggest, most glaring offense-based flaws of the old classes. Unfortunately, Unchained Rogues are still fucking paper-thin and have garbage Will/Fort saves on top of having shit for mobility, but at least now they can have a gimmick.

The Unchained Monk solves two problems meanwhile: Shitty Flurry Accuracy (Native full BAB and bonus attacks are all full BAB) and "fake mobility" (style strikes, flying kick in this case, exist; Pummeling Style does too, but is no longer quite as mandatory). It did NOT, however, solve the MAD problem, so if someone wants to play a Monk I strongly suggest just handing the party 25 PB. Or an early AoMS with the agile property. Or a feat for D2D.

Barbarian is a sidegrade at best, due to how they messed with the way Rage works. Core Barbarian is technically better for "normal" Barbarian-ing (2-handed weapon and going to town). Fighter didn't really get much, but it has been improved via Advanced Armor and Weapon Training options in WMH and AMH. The Stamina system is also a thing from unchained, but I don't know if you want to touch it or not.

Also, for the love of fuck, don't let your players play a summoner if they're new. I don't care how cool the thought of pulling a monster for every problem out of your pocket is, a player not familiar with the system WILL take forever.

Hopefully you don't keep that restriction for long, because "sticking to core only" is something you can only really do for 5e. Core-only pathfinder is boring, busted garbage. Still, if you're willing to expand once you all start to get an idea of the system, you should be able to get yourselves situated.

Not to say I recommend sticking with pathfinder, but if you ARE going to, then make sure your group is open to other systems once they learn it. You don't want to accidentally cultivate more "I only play pathfinder"-fags.

Because even with no optimization, it is very easy for your average martial to b marginilized by the casters when using Core options only. Pathfinder is THE WORST system for new players, and should only be attempted by people who already have much experience in rule intensive systems, or 3.5e grognards. I'll go about this slowly between doing other stuff, but let's start with Alexander.

Conceptually, he's bland. I don't want to imply that every app should be as crazy as a Succubed, I prefer simple concepts actually, but the issue is that beyond being a dude, Empress is written that even as living artifacts go it's a weak hook. There isn't much room in the way of development or conflict with his character that appears natural. I could describe him as "a dude with armor" when I'd rather describe a character as "a dude afraid of ghosts".

I do think he did a great job of showing his personality, personalities in his letters. His backstory is all there, and it works despite my earlier issues. I can believe a level 3 start, I can believe his reason for choosing the flower court.

I'm sure there is a slot for a classic folks hero and man of action that he might get in on if apps were taken right now, but he does a weak job of presenting that. His philosophy doesn't tie back into the rest of his character at all, which isn't a necessity since he does have a reason there, but the strongest apps are the ones that really show how they've arrived where they are.

Alexander a functional character, one of the stronger males and probably in the top half of the apps out right now. If I were to compare him to some previous pools with powerful apps though, I think he'd end up forgettable.

They may seem really different, but I'd like to compare Alexander to CCC. They're both characters who actually come from a very mundane backstory and champion a philosophy built on practical good and action. CCC has much stronger writing in all regards, and the right streak to her character and philosophy that I can see a DM having a lot of fun working with her. I'll try to compare any other apps I try at to a female app as well.
