Well I finished up a Shadow War Armageddon Inquisition kill team. Now that 8th is out I was thinking about expanding it out to a full army.
>>53630305
I looked up the rules and I can take Crusader squads to get storm shields, but they can only have Power Swords. I threw this guy together with a skitarii taser as a counts as, since I don't like the idea of riot police with swords, even in 40k. The Acolyte squads can have most of the special weapons and pistols and close combat weapons, I'm not sure how I want to outfit them. Flamers seem cool, meltaguns and plasma too.
>>53630305
What bits are you using they look great
>>53630363
>>53630305
>Humans using stormbolters
Boneitis for everyone!
>>53630551
Thanks, they're from all over. The arms and legs are Scions, the torsos are Scions and regular guard, the pauldrons are Sisters of Silence, heads are Skitarii, shields are Custodes, Mauls are Genestealer Cult and Skitarii.
Getting my count-as chimera forward one bit at a time. Now with a turret.
>>53630305
>>53630363
Those are oretty swert ass looking dudes.
>>53630363
I don't think anyone would have a problem with taser batons/shock clubs being used as power swords
Also man, buying that many SoS shoulders has got to add up. It looks great but geez.
>>53630661
My buddy bought like three each of the HH board game and Talons of the Emporer. The kits come with a few extra pauldrons plus some you can cut off of the arms they're attached to.
>>53630641
That looks pretty good mate
>>53630641
From the other side.
>>53630734
Thanks anon!
>>53630762
Is this for Blood Axes?
Finished the Chaopel-Rhino for my Word Bearers. Only have my phone here, so the shitty imagequality will have to do for now.
>>53631009
No, for IG regiment Argo Brigade.
>>53630641
>>53630762
Do you mind if I ask what pieces you used for it? I'm a fan of asymmetrical design.
>>53631159
That's dead sexy! Do all you can to prevent Knights from stepping on it. That seems to be a thing around here.
>>53631159
>>53631252
i knew this would trigger some people
>>53630710
Ah, that makes sense I guess. I look forward to seeing more of those dudes. My inquisitor's army has been immensely satisfying to work on.
>>53631252
That knight is so pretty. I wish he still posted.
>>53631239
Actually I just shortened Tamiya's 1/35 model for Marder 1A2. It is almsot perfect size compared to Chimera in widht amd height but its over 20 cm long so had to shorten it quite a bit.
>>53631239
Also all the bits I used came in with the model.
how the hell do i highlight this wip?
painted this years ago but never finished it.
I'm bad at highlights anyways
>>53631707
usually when people do camo patterns they undershade the model and the camo splotches are done with very transparent layers. but for that thing idk it's gonna be a lot of differnt paints
>>53631740
>undershading.
tell me more.

You better be having a special custom game scenario for it where it summons daemons throughout the game, or I will be really pissed.
But honestly, a stellar fucking job, I'm loving every bit of it.
>>53631760
basically how it works in your case is that if the base color is green, you do all the highlights and shadows on the green layer and all the sucessive camo colors will be transparent so the highlights and shadows show through on the new colors.
>>53631791
hmm i might try it out. this was only a one off. most of my other vehicles have a much broader camo scheme so its not to hard. I just wanted to try digital camo.
now i realize that may have been a lot of work for not much payoff since it looks so flat from a distance
>>53631159
I can't believe how hard my cock is right now, thank you anon. Seriously though, that looks fucking epic as hell.
Brings back the memories of 3rd and 4th edition CSM, you could actually field a rhino like this back then.
>>53631159
Brilliant! Did the little mausoleum need any conversion work or did it easily just sit straight on top of the rhino? I might borrow this idea for a Black Templar Chaplain rhino
>>53631771
Dont worry anon its almost 75 points now :D

For painting Thousand Sons, should I spray them blue then brushpaint the gold, or vice versa?
>>53632161
It's probably easier to start with Blue and pick out the raised areas in gold than trying to fill in the areas between the gold with blue.
Any tips on getting a skin tone similar to the the 5e goblins?
>>53631159

Are you talking about dungeon and dragons or what?
Seriously dude, I have no idea what you are getting at.
I first assumed you meant goblins from WHFB, but the only orange flavor of gobbos from there were firegoblins that were mentioned only once in a WD article about different goblin tribes.
>>53632161
I've tried what Duncan recommended, gold and then blue onto the flat panels and such, so much easier than the other way around. As long as you're a little careful it makes the job much less difficult.
>>53632576
D&D gobs. Their skin is a yellowish orange in the new artwork.
Sup guys, maybe you can give me some ideas for this.
I am looking for something to use as subtle cheap display bases for my showcase stuff.
It should be round, about 35mm diameter and no more than 30mm in height.
Something along the lines of pic related, but I need it solid and smooth, preferably wood or plastic.
Any ideas?
>>53631477
>>53631521
Great job, it looks good and somehow manages to fit the 40k style of squat, blocky vehicles.
I painted today my first figure. Had fun despite that my stormcast eternal looks a little bit like morpheus.
Next time I will paint at my gw shop so they can give me some tipps.

give him a nuln oil wash matey, looks decent for a first model though.
>>53632919
As long as you had fun, that's all that matters Anon. From what I can tell your lines aren't too messy. Just work on brush control and picking up techniques and you'll be good.
I just bought my first airbrush.
What kind of water should I be putting through it? I'm guessing tap water generally has too much calcium and crap which will clog the workings. Do I need to buy de-ionised water or will a britta filter do the trick?

>>53633123
If you're using water, yes, distilled only (you're correct, calcium & whatever else is floating around in tapwater is bad in the long run). You're not limited to water though; I've heard of people using wimdshield wiper fluid (which is essentially grain alcohol).
>>53633095
I still need to give him some details & fix some stuff but thanks!

Thanks a lot guys. It was my second Word Bearer vehicle and a blast to work on, Im really glad you like it. It wasnt very hard to put together. Needs some greenstuff around the the chapel part and the pulpit was some cutwork, but I think the candles were the only part where you really need to "sculpt".
>>53632247
Yes I did and I think ill post some shitty pics of it later.
>>53633943
I know right. Im quite supprised aswell it came out this good. Still need to add few things and then I can get it painted.

Suggestions for improvement?
I'm thinking of some script on the parchment, perhaps.
>>53634312
>Suggestions for improvement?
Is this the original metal model, or the Finecast replacement?
I would've drilled out the barrel of his bolt pistol, but I understand your reluctance to do so with such a snazzy model (being newer, it's one of the ones I don't have).
>I'm thinking of some script on the parchment, perhaps.
I use Sakura Micron pens for that kind of stuff.

>>53634312
i would highlight the skull a bit more. it should be the central point of focus and for that its a bit too dark and too similar to your parchment. other than that i really like it. your black looks clean and your cloth smooth. maybe the metal needs a bit of depth. a light glaze here and there could help.
>>53634396
May want to check the 40k general for those, I think one of the troves has a bunch of painting guides
>>53634375
It's the original metal guy. Can I drill metal easily? I've got a pin vice, but I've only used that for drilling through plastic.
And thanks for the micron pen suggestion!
Upcoming Revenant King
>>53634468
Oh and btw ...shuld I try to get his eyes gleeming greenish?
>>53634452
A pin vise should work fine on metal models.
Assuming you have HSS drill bits, and most pin vices come with these as standard, then you're good to go to drill into metal.
>>53634440
More work on the skull is a good idea. I painted it exactly the same as the parchment, so making it more bone-like, and less papery, sounds good.
Thank you!
>>53634507
Awesome, I'm glad to hear that the vise can work on metal. Drilling, here I come!
>>53630641
What this guy >>53633943 said
>>53634452
>Can I drill metal easily? I've got a pin vice
Yes. Before you begin, take the sharp end of your hobby knife and dig out a divot in the end of the pistol's barrel. Place the tip of the bit into the divot as you drill. This will serve as a "guide" (similar to a pilot hole when you're putting screws in wood) so your drill bit won't rip the pistol to shreds.
>>53634468

>>53635027
A serious question: how do you transport a model like this without breaking off any of the spikes, etc.?
I'm planning on making some wild conversions myself but I still don't know how to get them to the gaming table without any damage.
>>53635378

Bottlecaps?
Last night's progress on the Primaris Raven Guard I'm working on.
I have to do the purity seals, chapter and squad symbols as well as clean up the base rims and bits of the armor I got paint on.
>>53636075
The churchtower and the weapons can be removed and the rest was build to fit exactly into my transport case. Other than that its pretty sturdy where it counts. Its to wide to fall over and all the spiky bits are pointed upwards, so as long as there is no gravity shift it should be fine.
>>53633123
Do not run water through your brush. Use a small amount of thinner and apply with a tooth brush. You can use a q tip but it might gunk up the resovoir. After scrubbing pour about 2 ml in the resovoir and spray to clear the needle. I use pic related. About 8 bucks but worth it.
>>53636257
This is insane. I'm loving every bit of it.
>>53635002

>>53632515
>>53633051

do it with side of the brush, or just steady hand on flat surfaces.

First mini. Not quite happy with the blends, but learning.
>>53637203
>first mini
Are you sure about that?
>>53637203
>>53637537
i dont like these "first mini" posts. if its too good people who know painting wont believe you and people who dont will be discouraged. even if its by some weird technicallity your first wargaming miniature we all know, that you have a decent background in some form of painting so why try to grab extra compliments by telling us its your first? the blending looks great. it looks alive and somehow veiny. no need to fish for applause
>>53632919
I love your movies, Mr J. Fox
>>53637537
Yeap. Otherwise I wouldn't have plastic glued the thing before painting. Hard to reach spots. Also Imperial Primer seems like it's easy to rub off. Is this normal?
>>53637716
ok I chuckled
>>53637699
I've not painted traditionally since highschool and I'm kinda shit at it in digital. In fact, I really dislike colouring. It's really the first mini I'm painting. Why bring it up? I don't know. Maybe as a defence as I keep looking at cmon.net minis and feel inadequate. Personally I understand the discouragement but I feel like if someone like me can do it then so can a lot of other people. But I get your point.
Painting up my salvaged land raider and I'm having an issue getting rid of these brush streaks that show due to the metallic paint
I've already applied a couple thinned coats and I wanted to ask for advice on how I should proceed
Tried doing a desert base, any feedback is appreciated
>>53637939
....apply more thin coats untill the streaks disappear? As long as you keep them thin you can pretty much put however many you want on it.
Anyone want to help me out? I'm trying to figure out a paint scheme for my Dark Eldar? So far i've painted my Archon's cape a dark blue but beyond that i'm not sure where to go for the main armor color or trim maybe green?
>>53638040
Sorry dude, but those huge fucking chunks of cork never look good. Try something with half the thickness and try to fit it within the borders of your base.
>>53638118
Fair point, it was fun trying though.
Got any recommendations or ideas on stuff to try instead ?
>>53638064
Maybe something like pic related?
>>53638064
or bone, it goes well with blue
>>53636427
>tfw you remember you never cleaned your airbrush last time you used it and it has a thin layer of black inside
Really hoping a good soak will fix it and that there's not as much as I remember inside
>>53638064
I'd go for a classic grey trim with some blue cloth and gold accents + a bit of white for the more elite units.
>>53638308
I'm liking this, maybe i can go with green gems instead of the red. How about fur, would gray/white look alright or would it be too muted
>>53638403
If you're going for a darker armour I think gray might be to muted, personally I'd go for something like light brown.
>>53637876
I think the skin is very well done, and it's clear that you've got strong fine-motor control and a good ability to plan (or at least eyeball) color transitions
>>53638441
Cool thanks I'll give it a shot
>>53630256
How would you paint clear glasses /wipg/?
alright wip, im finally getting started on using my new citadel paints instead of tetors (i really hate those testors) and i made this head that im going to use for my iron hands primaris chapter, they are supposed to be a chapter that through warpfuckery from moving through the great rift had all their equipement aged like hundreds of years
how did i do, i didnt have any white(clearly a mistake) so i dont really like the eyes and i think i overdid the rust effect on the metal righ next to the skin
>>53639210
fuck i forgot pic
>>53638443
Thanks. I'm currently in need of help for the rest colour wise. I was thinking of a black armour with silver/steel trim, but now I'm thinking of a gold trim so it won't make the blade look boring. I'm think of a red for the back of the symbol. But I'm not sure what to do for the leather boots and straps.
Wondering between brown or shooting myself in the foot and looking up flayed skin. What's your opinion on this?
>>53636060
>>53637159

Make friends with a Space Marine player and weasel him into trading you some of his spare plasma guns.
Buy spare Space Marine plasma guns off eBay, and arm yer ladz wiv 'em.
Go to Bartertown and try to arrange something in the bitz forum that will avail you of additional plasma guns.
I've looked at pictures of plastic scions, and this all seems very easy, but - not having any Imperial Guard plasma guns that are not metal - is there something obvious I'm missing?
>>53641363

Working on this Ork warboss from AoBR, any suggestions on colors for his pants and machinery? I tried Leadbelcher on some of the armor and it doesn't stand out as much if I had primed him black.
>>53633433
HHNNNNNGG I never thought I would like pink and gold as a scheme but you have swayed me, anon.
Does anyone have tips on how to paint the yellow skin bumps on bloodletters? I tried a few different experiments on this unfinished one, but didn't get the accuracy I wanted.
>>53641523
>I tried Leadbelcher on some of the armor and it doesn't stand out as much if I had primed him black.
Try painting the gunmetal parts with a thin coat of black before applying da Leadbelcher.
>>53641237
Have you tried cropping them? That fixes the rotating on my phone.
>>53641523
for any bare metal, go with leadbelcher, followed by a heavy nuln oil wash and once it's dry, give it an agrax wash to make it look oily and old. As for the pants, black would look nice.
Crappy test paint jobs in bad setup, please forgive.
Making my R&H army for 8th, what basic colours do you think work as the basis for Khorne Space Romans: silver and red, or black and brass?
>>53641363
WB anon here, I really like them. The idea with the halbreds is great, maybe I will steal that. You had the exact same idea as me about using the ancient chaos warrior helmets, they look so good. But in the end I decided to go for the GK ones, so you have the best of both worlds on your guys.
>>53641639
Drybrushing, my friend. VERY lightly. Do an orange one and then EVEN lighter, like barely touching the model in yellow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo0m5ol6P2w
>>53636847
Not saying your paintjob is shit. It just reminds me of shit. Try lightening it up a little and go for a bolder shade of brown like gothor with baneblade highlights.
>>53641809
by the way: who else is slightly shellshocked after seeing the points for the new combi-weapons. 65 points for a set of guns I will fire once, maybe twice is not very cheap.
>>53641809
I am still allowed to feel jealous over how cool your models look. Nice freehanding.
>>53638238
You may need a new needle then. What brush do you have? Diasasaemble it and soak the pieces individually.
>>53641881
that wasn't the original poster, but thank you for tips, Still not too sure what to do it with. Might experiment a different technique on another model.
>>53641640
Perfect, thanks!

>dunk Sisters in there for 3 hours
>pull one out place into soapy warm water and scrub with brush
>zero change
What the fucking fuck? 3 hours of pure mineral spirits did jack shit? Not even a little? I'm going to let soak for 24 hours now. Expected better from it.
Are model paints somehow magically resistant to pure mineral spirits?
>>53641733
1: thin your paints more they seem to heavily applied
2: the right one, but use some shades like nuln.

I think it'll be just off but curious what you guys think. Doesn't the Omega symbol have a different curve to it than the Ultra one?

it's still rad though, go for it!
>>53642864
What do you think the skin tone is? It's obviously some sort of grey, but not a straight grey. It's got like a blue or purple in it.
My other ideas were Pirates or Samurai, but both would require too much time and modification to do.
I'm not great shakes at conversions is the thing. I've the bit, I'm just not sure what to do with it.
should i complete basing before or after hitting the mini with ard coat?

do everything but gras, flock and tufts.
Stuff with fibres etc. Static grass tends to collect tiny droplets of varnish if you spray it on.
Unless you are going for a morning dew look glue all that stuff on after varnishing.
>>53643239
I really like them.
I kind of feel like they would benefit from adding some markings or army badges maybe.
You got a great opportunity with the bright paint on there.

>>53642760
is that what this was supposed to be?
>>53643398
Yo, that looks pretty cool. And I'd assume yes. Now I absolutely want to do that.
>>53643187
I'll have to ask the 40K crowd if they've got any spare bits from that.
>>53643265
I really want to but I get a vib that they're so massed produced and die so quickly they don't bother putting too much effort into painting it. Kinda like t34s during stalingrad. Just white paint and go
Obviously I can't make it look like that because it'd look ugly, but idk if markings would fit the theme, especially because I want a few more and have a horde of them . There's not much room for neat markings beside numbers, which I always found boring.
>>53643478
Yeah I get that.
An army bade or a squad number always looks nice imo though.
But I have a hardon for that kind of stuff anyway.
Maybe as an alternative way of adding a bit of detail or character to each one of them a scorch mark, some scratches like they walked close to something or something along those lines might look nice.
Anyway, not trying to sell you on the idea, just throwing it out there.
I like them either way.

I was looking for a PDF on some useful modelling tips in my folders, and for whatever reason I can't find it. It was a PDF focusing on battle damage to armor, in this case Space Marines - bullet holes, wear and tear, even the buildup of crystals or mushrooms.
If anyone has it or knows where to find it, I'd appreciate it.

I swear it doesnt look this bad irl
My lighting and camera did not feel like doing a good job today

First time painting nurgle here and the necrosius model is a bastard

The quality of the sculp is pretty bad
When i finally stopped painting i considered stripping him but honestly im satisfied with it all things considered
He's only for a small nurgle detachment anyway.
>>53644106
Yea theres actually a ton of difference between the colors
The citadel one looks the most like what real wet/fresh blood looks like in my experience
The vallejo ones are both duller looking shades (still glossy) and look better as blood and pus or very old blood
>>53644146
Nurgle models shouldnt have a yellow color scheme
Plus the necrosius model sucks so bad

>>53644713

I haven't painted in a while either so I worry I've gotten worse...
>>53644699
All I can recommend is the Lexicanum. Not sure how up to date it is, but they've been pretty good about keeping up with things.
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Loyal_Space_Marine_Chapters_(List)
There's also a pictoral list, which may be more useful for you for finding an army. It also has Chaos Space Marines in it though.

>>53644737
Maybe. Maybe not. It definitely speeds things up with far better blending/gradients. You still need to know fundamentals: thinning paints, highlights, etc etc. Because even after airbrushing you need to go in with a brush.
If you're not in a spot where you can get consistent practice, then maybe commission a local painter. Otherwise, make time to practice.

>>53646491
Don't do pure white, do like a almost-white. Like a really light grey.
>>53646559
I appreciate the suggestion, but I kind of like it as is. The white I mean. I'd prefer it to a grey personally. Do you have any other suggestions besides changing colors entirely?
Please to be ignoring the green spikes on the boot--for some reason, points have an especially hard time holding paint and just seem to let the primer through.
>>53634481
I think a cold blue would work way better considering the color scheme
>>53646579
What you need is to shade with a non-white color, not actually change the whole color. If you don't shade you don't have volume, if you don't have volume your color looks plain.
At the very least, outline all the crevices with a dark grey or brown or pure black.
>>53646541
Is that any better you think?
>>53646808

consider, if you were wearing a coat and a helmet, where the chin of the helmet would rest on the coat

Your highlights and little lines on the shells made with a technique I can't remember look too thick. Try a smaller brush. The skin would benefit from a wash and some kind of highlight
>>53646944
Thanks m8 i nees to onvest in more brushes. They were done with a standatd brush and i didn't thin the paint for the orange stripe thinkong it would make it "pop" more but ill thin it out on the next batch
>>53647004
No prob anon. Just make those lines a bit thinner, and the combination of wash and drybrush/edge highlights will really refine the look you've got going and make things pop. Looking forward to seeing your Nids pop up in a future thread
Is this the right thread for a painting pet peeve?
I've got this buddy that, whenever we're talking about what we've painted lately, will stop me mid-sentence every single time I refer to Leadbelcher as gray.
>It's metal, not gray. You need to be specific.
What the actual fuck, guy.
>>53647159
I don't think it's fair to call it grey - it's different from most grey paints - but 'metal' is so vague - could refer to gold, copper, bronze...why not silver or steel or something? Either way, if it's clear you're talking about Leadbelcher, no need for him to be so pedantic.
>>53647159
One friend we introduced to the hobby refuses to prime his models and says that he wishes he didn't have to paint the small details on models. It sucks because he has the DV Dark Angels and he shoulda just sold them.
