2nd guy done, used nuln oil over all the black and it helped blend the highlights.

For the flamer guy, what Sept or colour should the tau helmet be? To fit into the snow and mud base.

Working on a new color scheme for my Tau. The tacticool dweeb in me likes it. My other tau are FSE colored.
>>
>>53380968
My recipe for Uruk-hai using Pre-2012 paints is...
>Prime Black
>Dry brush boltgun metal over whole model quite heavily.
>Chaos black on skin/non metal area's.
>50/50ish of gore red/scorched brown. (Adjust ratios as per you liking)
>Highlight skin gore red.
>Highlight metal areas with chainmail silver.
>Skull white for any symbols/teeth/eyes and shit.

Basic as fuck way to paint them but it gets a good result.

No worries.
Basing really on your preference. I did mine to represent Helms Deep. So it was some sand painted grey, the odd bit of slate or rock and the rare tuft of yellowy grass. But I cant even show you a picture unfortunately because I sold them some time ago.

There was a guy at my local GW who based his Uruks off the closing scenes from the first movie. So it was all forest bases. They looked fantastic.
>>
>>53380952
They look good, but you should try to do at least one more thin white coat on the shoulder pads.

No meme, but your paints are a bit thick and showing some of the black below. Biggest offender is the sword brother on the right imo.

Working on Minotaurs for 8th edition, decided to just carve off the Inquisition seals on the MK 8 armour from the Deathwatch veteran sets to appease the lore. Went with a heavy bolter, combi flamer, and plasma gun. Currently have three sets of Tartaros terminators en route. Any idea how I can model the Minotaurs chapter seal on their shoulder pads?

>Can I just glue the shoulders into place with the paint, or am I going to have to scrape it off the inside and shoulder?
depends on what glue you use really, if you use plastic glue, yes you will need to or else it will not adhere
you can get by without doing it with superglue but the bond will be weak

basically just do it anyways

I had a terminator sergeant from a boxed set, but I didn't need a sergeant since I already had a full squad of Terminators so I used some extra bits to re-purpose him as a regular Terminator. The white is kind of crappy, the silver bits aside from the pauldron don't quite look good, and I still need to base him. But other than that what should I work on?
>>
>>53383799

It's superglue. Since I started using resin bits too, I've more or less started using super glue for everything.

How weak would the bond be? I'm waiting on my invoice for an order of some molded shoulders from Alpharius, and I might want to pop them off at some point.

>How weak would the bond be?
youll basically be super gluing paint together so not incredibly strong, expect it to pop off if it falls from too far of a height
just get a small bit of sandpaper and go through the inside of the pauldrons a bit just to rough it up and take out some of that paint, you dont need all of it out just enough so youre at least bonding plastic to plastic and youll be ok
the worst thing thatll happen is youll just have to clean it up again and re glue it if it falls off

>>53384172
Makes sense. What grade sand paper, btw? I've been meaning to get some for ages, and I'm about to go to Walmart anyway.

>>53384372
The rest of the model is assembled/painted except for the heads and pauldrons. I was going to remove them from the sprue, but then I realized it would be so much easier to prime them on the sprue because I'd only have to touch up the two spots on the pauldron and for the head, I can actually paint it on the sprue because I'm just gluing the bottom anyway.

Working on some Steel Legion dudes for my LGS's SWA tourney. They're about half finished by now. I just need to hit the rest of the leather on the belts/harnesses/masks, paint in the faces on the dudes with their goggles up, neaten up the yellow for their overcoats, then I'm gonna hit it all with a wash of Reikland Fleshshade to shade it and warm it up a bit.

After that, all that's left will be painting the guns, helmets, pants, and goggles, which are comparatively small parts of the minis.

>>53384998

>>
>>53384969
I absolutely love the Steel Legion, and I'm super bummed they don't have many options for minis. I'm still holding out hope that with Cadia out of the picture and the war on Armageddon heating back up in the fluff alongside the planet getting time in the limelight with SWA, Steel Legion will be the new IG posterboys and get some plastic minis. The current IG line is old and looks like shit compared to more current minis and I'm hoping they're due for an update soon.

Failing that, I'm planning on starting IG when 8th launches, and I'm going to kitbash my own resin Steel Legion using some Anvil Industries greatcoat bodies and the Mad Robot shock troop heads. Anvil also has some good looking weapons, so I'll probably use those as well.

i know why the red scorpions get them, what with fw jerking off at how cool they are and all
but the mantis warriors havent gotten ANYTHING
not even a model for their one named unit
i emailed fw about it a while back, they said they werent going to "go back and make models for the badab war" because it was """outdated"""
"Many thanks for the email It is very unlikely as the badab war range is slowly leaving our line of product. the books are very out of date and have been unavailable to purchase for a while.

Unless we return to the badab war we will not likely see any specific items released for the mantis warriors or any other badab era chapters."
also another funny thing, their unit has rules but they say "Currently there are no rules for this unit at all so you have complete freedom to design a unit the way you envision these in your mind or how you interpret them from the historical accounts in the books."
but there are rules??? i dont even know

Use poster tack balls on the inside of the pauldrons as a mask next time, you won't have to scrape anything
>>
>>53387958
for oil paints I have white spirit in a cup (just a little bit) and I mix and thin on a palette
White spirit does nothing to the model if it was primed properly
I found that isopropyl will melt plastic models
>>
>>53387958
also for washing I have a mixture 5:4 white spirit : glossy acrylic varnish - I pour a bit in the cup and just wash my brush with the desired colour in it until it has enough paint in it.
It sticks nicely, it flows great and it can be the last layer since I don't have to varnish it again afterwards.
I do however varnish with glossy varnish before washing for better flow.
>>
What are the best ways of painting that produce acceptable results with minimum effort? People used to talk about dipping back in the day, but I rarely see it now. Can you drybrush an entire model and end up with something you can just pick out the details on?
>>
>>53388799
I'd say base with multiple layers of wash. You could probably dip-wash to save time.
Then light dry brush to pick up all the details and you're as good as done.

Just why do it at all if you don't care?
>>
>>53388876
I like to have reasonable looking game pieces and do enjoy painting, but sometimes you just need to batch paint a bunch of guardsmen/gaunts/marinelets in short order and get them onto the table. While still looking reasonable, of course.

Just out of curiosity, am I better off using water-based paint?
>>

depends on the amount of time and patience you have
if you're not very patient use acrylics
if you want to wet blend and generally take advantage of oil paint properties and can wait for it to dry use oils

Take a handful of the primer bottle and shake for a solid five minutes.
Then take a good long stick or used paintbrush and strongly stir the content of the pot until the content is nice and thick.
Take a bit of that thick primer and mix it with a couple of teaspoon of water so it's back to water consistency.
Apply generously on model and let it dry for a few hours.
Primed figurine, done.

Any advice on priming with gesso? I read the dakka post but my results are nowhere close to his, in fact they were completly unusable and required stripping. I tried slopping it on (disaster) and thinned down a bit (brushstrokes and shitty coverage). I used one cheap craftstore gesso and one that was a bit pricier. I'd have to order Liquitex gesso online but I'm reluctant to do so because of the shit experiences so far.

Recommendations for other paint-on primers welcome, I tried out Vallejo urethane grey and it came out as shit and am currently using Vallejo Air Medium Gunship Grey which comes out okayish.

Any advice on working with leadbelcher? I can't seem to get the consistency right, either it's too thick or it separates and becomes worthless. I'm thinning with water.

>>53391322
Just like any other paint, once you thin it, run your brush along your palette while twisting it to make a point. If the paint streak you've created is separating/beading, It's too thin. If the paint is globby/you can see bristle strokes, then it isn't thin enough. I aim for the consistency of whole milk for all of my paints and that always works for me.

Iron Knights Anon here from a few threads ago, keeping you guys updated. Bought a box of tacticals today. Disappointed by the lack of bits in the box, pretty sure the older sets I had had far more but that might just be the nostalgia goggles talking. The transfer sheet only has enough designation markings for five marines (five and a half with the studded Mark VI pauldron) so I might buy one of those big forge world ones with a bunch on. The small shields have arrived as well, they should look okay on the models, scale-wise they seem to fit. I've got some sprue cutters coming in the post in the next few days, I hope I can do them justice.

Problem is, Carcharodons don't have different units per se, and the only other named Character that we know of is Te Katurangi, their Chief Librarian and oldest living member by far. However, he's from a recent novel and so FW wouldn't have time to write rules and make a model for him in the meantime.
Carcharodons are bound to stay like they are, I just jope their rules are the same dor 8th ed.

Those are some goddamn strong nostalgia goggles you have my man. Having recently used both a 4th edition and a "new" tactical kit, I can assure you, there is absolutely, positively, no comparison. The new one is better and wih a metric fuckton more of stuff on it.

Their metallics are good for airbrushing straight from the pot, so they're trickier to use with a brush.
The standard colours are incredibly matte and quite goopy from the pot, I usually thin them down with acrylic thinner rather than water.
They dry flat as nothing else though.
>>
>>53392828
It's the new box, bought it from Warhammer World. And you're probably right, haven't actually had a look at any of the old sets in years. I've heard the devastator box is so much better than it used to be too, I'll be sure to pick one of them up. The big difference is the transfers, it used to be a much bigger sheet with multiple chapters rather than just ultras, I'm sure. Still, I just need it for the tac insignias.

That's kinda their thing though, they "dry" quickly, but you can still move the colour around a little bit when they start to dry up, which lets you do limited blends quite easily.

If you want to slow it down, hit it with some drying retarder.

I've never really thinned it with just water, but in my experience the colour coverage isn't phenomenal to begin with, it's so much nicer with airbrushing.
Though you'll need to thin the hell out of it to put it through an airbrush.

Doesn't look that bad, the highlight are there and you can see they're done in steps.
Next time try to thin your paints a bit more (no pun intended I swear), you can see it's a bit thick on the metallic parts and on the white especially.
Also I'm guessing the dark angels logo was painted with just white paint?
You should avoid doing that and instead do it in 3 steps starting from grey, then lighter grey (50/50 mix of grey and white) and then with just white on the raised ares.
But overall, a pretty nice job, keep up the good work and welcome back to the hobby m8.

>I want them to be homebrew boys, I just have fuck all sense of colour
As a general tip, you need three colors. A primary, a secondary and an accent color.
Your primary would probably be steel/silver then.
The other colors can either be contrasts or harmonize. You want your accent color to stand out though, either by being brighter/darker or a color contrast.

Silver is pretty neutral as far as colors go, so picky any secondary color you want for the pauldrons and then decide on an accent for stuff like lenses and other details in relation to that.

Whatever you like better. Could build an inquisitor and use them as retinue, maybe.
>Lore wise does multiple guard regiments make sense? Ie cadian and catchan, and in my case vostroyan and valhallans?
Absolutely. Most wars are fought by more than one military detachment. this is commonly referred to as crusade armies. Popular among Space Marine player who like to paint one squad of each army involved in a particular war for example. There is nothing stopping you from doing the same with an IG army.

Deathwatch specialize in fighting xenos exclusively. They even have specific chapter tactics for nids. That being said, Iron Hands are the ones that field lots of Dreadnoughts. Take your pick, anon. You can't have both. That being said, there's a later founding chapter called the Emperor's Shadows. They're Iron Hands descendants and even have a Japanese theme. (For your Kaiju fighting needs) There is nothing written about them, but I imagine that they would field lots of Dreadnoughts (Iron Hands descendant combined with Japanese elder veneration) that would be a good place to start.

Never bow to fluff on what you think is cool. Remember, it's about your dudes. I have names for all my Eldar on the bottom of their bases, who are from a custom craftworld. The more you get into your force being *yours*, the less the inevitable fuckups in the fluff will bother you.

Ultramarines and Scythes of the Emperor. It's their main shtick.

For maximum dreads I'd look into Iron Hands though. Bein entombed/having an entirely bionic body is what every IH dude aspires to.
>>
>>53397670
You probably want to homebrew that, since Marines would look neat in an original colour scheme based of Pacific Rim's Mechs - especially Striker Eureka.

Or, as >>53397732 says, you could use an underdeveloped Iron Hands successor, since you'll almost certainly be using Iron Hands rules. Just don't, under any circumstances, use the Emperor's Shadows. They really do look like shit. Use Sons of Medusa or something.

So, this is probably going to sound stupid, but I figure I should ask before I waste my time. In this picture, in regards to the system itself, I start with the base, shade, layer 1, layer 2 obviously. But I'm wondering about the layers. Am I highlighting with those layers, or am I actually just completely "layering" them over the base and previous layer?
>>
>>53399362
GW's paint systems is designed to be used a certain way.
Layer paints are slightly translucent to make creating smooth transitions easier.

However what specifically you end up doing with them is up to you.
The idea is that you take base X and create a smooth highlight with layer Y and Z.
If you instead want an opaque layer of Z and then highlight with something else you can do that too of course. Just keep in mind that base layers are more opaque by default.

If you want to avoid that problem just buy Vallejo. Their paint is not premixed to be used a certain way. So aside from the normal issues that all paint ranges have with certain colors like yellow for example you can use them all the same way.

Im desperately trying to paint a space marine, im used to the easy mode imperial guard with all the trenchcoats and stuff like that, really are those minis supposed to be this hard? Im used to play around with thinned down paints for the shades and highlights, but its impossible to do with all those damn wide flat areas

Do you guys have any good guide, suggestion and or tips so i can actually learn on how to paint one before i actually buy them (this is just a test mini to learn and mess around with )

Silver as your primary color, red as the secondary and yellow as your accent color. It's visually striking and unique among marine chapters (I think)

These are the first space marines I've ever painted, so I'm by no means an expert. But here's my 2cents.

>multiple layers on everything
Those big flat areas need to be nurtured
>wash game needs to be STRONG
Most of the time you can slap a model with the wash and leave it alone, with these guys you have to be ontop of them and keep the wash from pooling
>HIGHLIGHTS
alright this is the big one, and not present in pic related. You cannot drybrush marines, I know I tried. I like to think im.wuite good at creating smooth drybrushes (it's how I do my flesh) but it makes power armor look mediocre at best. Unfortunately marines have a bullion edges that need to be highlighted so it's a handful, I suck at edge highlights so it's been a battle

optional
>weathering
Unless you want your marines to look lristome I'd recommend adding some battle damage and weathering to help break up all the flat areas

but seriously the green is very boring and could use some highlights. Also there's a glaring gap in the trukk's engine so you might want to try and fix that.

How should I make the green look better? I am completely ignorant in that regard. I've been stuck looking at the model and thinking it needs something and not having the knowledge to do any thing about it.

Also I don't really know how to fix the engine; my desire to paint the model was stronger than my need to fix it but it still does bother me.
>>
>>53402825
Highlights my man.
Basically, take a green that is brighter than the green you used to basecoat the model.
Then just follow all the edges with your brush and make thin lines to make the edges pop out.
There's more you could do, but this is a good start for a beginner.

What do you guys think? Red base, grey base, or tan base?

Red has the best contrast but I'm worried it screws with the red details on the models.

I like the muted astronauts grey but it doesn't contrast much with the model. Matches their scheme well and makes sense for the shadow war of Armageddon games I'm using them in though.

The agrellan earth looks nice but I'm worried it doesn't match their scheme in any real way.

Also open to suggestions, but only other thing I can think of would be a snow base, when I already have like 4 armies based with snow. That said they'd probably look really sharp with snow ...

Dammit I hate choices
>>
>>53405365
All three of those are pretty lackluster.

The marines themselves look really sharp though.

Did you plan on adding basing material?
>>
>>53405388
yeah but the basing material is going to depend on the base color. These are all technical paints, so I'm just using this initial test to get an idea of what the rough "look" will be for each. Depending on which I go with there will be grass, debris, rubble, etc.

Gonna give a try at a snow base, I think that may be my best bet.

whelp snow it is. I'd prefer not having yet another army on snow but man if it doesn't help make the color pop.

This is just the first pass. I'll get the snow deeper and fluffier after a couple more applications and frost the rocks a bit.

Also I just realized I accidentally slipped a bit on his right shoulder. Son of a bitch that's gonna be a pain to fix. It takes like 5 coats of glazes to get that silver to the proper sheen since I can't find a commercial paint that matches it.

Gemstone paints are god-tier for tabletop+ quality, just don't use silver for their undercoat. I would recommend going instead for Leadbelcher with one or two coats of gloss-nuln oil to make darker lenses.

First came the rhythmic earthshaking thuds.
With the the thuds came the droning swarms of biting and burrowing flies.
With the flies came a mountain of a man.
But it wasn't a man. Its proportions were too large, too bulky. It must have been at least 8 feet tall in its baroque, rusted Terminator armour; the surface marred with wounds and corruption, thick with grime; its plated arms ending in massive clawed gauntlets showing the wear and tear of millennia.

The walking mountain took steady steps through the war torn street, deserted apart from the buzzing flies and the dozen unlucky soldiers ordered to secure the block. Each footfall was punctuated by the sound of metal boots crunching and grinding concrete to dust, leaving spiderweb cracks and slightly sunken prints in the road. Coming to a halt some twenty yards from the positions of the soldiers, its voice bellowed from the armour's broadcast system — harsh and sickening — devoting a sacrifice to the lord of pestilence. As it spoke, its softly glowing eye lenses passed over each of the soldiers, the crimson glass contrasting against its battered green armour.

These soldiers were well trained, but they had fought against fellow humans. Terrorists, criminals and cults, but not this... horror. Two turned and ran. One drew his sidearm and ate the barrel. The rest took aim with shaking hands and opened fire.
>>
>>53407064
As the whipcrack sound of lasgun fire echoed through the street, the giant began a lumbering charge, closing most of the distance between it and the soldiers in but a second. The lasers barely scorched the surface of its thick armour, and in a heartbeat the figure was among them, towering over the men as it charged bodily into one of them. The soldier flew back with the sound of breaking bones and was dead before he hit the ground. Bright lightning arced over the thing's claws as it swung in long, fast motions; cleaving two men in half at the waist with one swipe, reversing the movement into a backhand which sent another's head flying clean off his shoulders. The squad's sergeant didn't even have time to finish yelling an order before a long, corroded talon cut him short, punching through his throat with a meaty snick, severing his spine.

I play Krieg, I use the colour scheme of the 5th Siege. For the trenchcoat, I base with Mechanicus Standard Grey, wash the whole thing with Nuln Oil, before picking out the raised areas again with Mech Standard, then Dawnstone, then a final highlight of Fenrisian Grey, so give it a slight blue colour in the light.

As for the browns, that's less important. I use Mournefang for the dark areas, and Steel Legion Drab for light areas, before washing with either Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade, and highlighting with Zandri Dust.

Finally, for the helm and shoulders, I base with Eshin Grey, wash with Nuln Oil, before weathering them with Leadbelcher, then Runefang Steel.

>>
>>53407264
For that you'd want to base in Thunderhawk Blue, before washing in Drakenhoff Nightshade. Then go back in with Thunderhawk and redefine the areas that the wash didn't settle, but be sure to water it down a lot, almost like a glaze, so you don't have any harsh edges where one colour stops and another begins. After that highlight with Fenrisian Grey, followed by another more selective highlight of Russ Grey.

Thanks anon, that should make a nice grey blue look for the coats then, since I'd like them to look weathered being kriegers and all
Will probably go with black armor notched with some kind of silver or grey, and yeah I love the look of tab gaiter wraps for clothing, and a deeper a brown for the leather pieces of kit

Sorry for the shit picture, my phone camera is broken, so I cracked out an old phone just to take this, but the quality of that is still horrendous.

Nevertheless, you can sort of see how the model looks. These are some I'm working on right now. Left is almost done, just needs one or two more highlights and some weathering, and right is in the basecoating stage, so you can see a before / after of what the model will look like.

If you're using a normal pallete it can dry up really quickly.
I'd suggest you try out the wet pallete like in pic related.
The paint stays wet for hours, and it's really simple to make, you'll need:
1. some kind of containter, like a lunch box
2. water
3. baking paper, shiny side up

voila
>>
>>53407723
Seems like I have to move towards a wet palette now due to summer, feels bad.

As someone who has alternated between using and not using a wet pallet, the wet pallet is a godsend. My paint can last for hours, even a full day when the lid is on and as someone who can't sit and marathon paint for 8 hours, it's perfect.

I'm not overloading it you nigger. I take a small amount of paint on my pallete before thinning with water then use the standard amount of paint on my brush.

Yes I have, I'm a commission painter, and yes it does something, it prevents the paint from drying out on the pallete when you're painting for extended periods of time, especially when it hot outside.

What the fuck does KFC have to do with this?
>>
>>53407759
Okay so here's what I was thinking.

Mask, boot gaiters, backpack - zandri dust base, agrax earthshade wash, karak stone layer(?)
Coat, pants - dryad bark base, nuln oil wash, dawnstone highlights(?)
shoulder pads, helmet, parts of the lasgun - abaddon black mixed with leadbelcher, washed with nuln oil.
Gloves - abaddon black shaded with nuln oil.

I don't know the brown for boots, straps and ammo puches. But your brown is too dark. What do you think? Basically darker jacket and lighter browns.
>>
>>53408272

>>
>>53407158
>>53407373

indeed steel legion is the best choice.
>>
I don't like wet pallets because I cant stand how thin it makes the paints. I just wind up with paint that's so thin it leaves a watery slightly tinted streak on flat surfaces and then the paint pools up in any recess
>>
>>53408312
Go with what you want, but Dryad Bark is VERY dark, and will essentially just look black after you've washed it. If you want grey trenchcoats, start with a lighter basecoat.

My brown is washed with Nuln Oil, which makes it darker. I do this because it speeds up the process to wash the whole model with Nuln. If you want lighter browns, just do a lighter wash with Agrax Earthshade, instead.
>>
>>53408365
Just use less water.
>>
>>53407687
>>53407759
That's pretty fucking nice man, I'll probably lighten some of those browns, a bit more tan and I'm going to go for a bit lighter coat
>>
Ive got the perfect compromise.

Get a large plastic container. Fill it with a shallow pool of cold water and ice. Place your dry pallete on top.

Now even if its hot, the paint wont dry out that quickly.
>>
Might be getting some second hand models, they're in good condition but some are already painted. Previous paintjob is pretty shitty, but I'd want them in my own colours anyway.

If I soak them in household cleaner and give them a brush that should get the paint off, right? Never stripped a model before, so if I'm retarded someone please let me know before I fuck up my minis.
>>
>>53408505
Should probably add, GW plastics and GW paints.
>>
>>53408440
Yeah, this is certainly not my best work because you have to remember that you gotta paint 10000000000000000 of these guys.

If you want to lighten the coat some more, I really like another layer of Russ Grey on top, so the process would go Mech Standard (which you can get in spray-can form) > Dawnstone > Fenrisian > Russ. This should bring out a nice bright finish at the highest points.

Just make sure you thin the paint heavily when you do several layers like this, and you should have yourself some pretty awesome looking totally-not-WW1-Infantry dudes.
>>
>>53408505
Simple Green/Dettol depending on where you are from.

Pretty much finished my knight, what do you guys think?
>>
>>53409635
With some more pronounced highlights I think that'll look pretty rad.
>>
>>53409681
For example wear?
>>
>>53409703
I'd say just edge highlights in general. Maybe it's just the lighting but I hardly noticed the edging around the purple and blue areas particularly.

Or I'm just going blind.
>>
>>53409703
Not the same guy but I agree about highlights. Mostly the top carapace. The blue central section seems particularly empty to me, but the purple bits to either side, the little shield thingy next to the head and the groin plate also stand out as wanting a little attention but to a lesser degree.

Also this is a personal one, so feel free to disagree, but I don't like the blood on the chainsword. It isn't a weapon for fighting infantry, it's for fucking up things similar in size to a knight, or at least a tank or bunker. Unless you're up against a squiggoth or nids nothing you're chainsawing is likely to bleed.
>>
>>53409635
Not to shit on your Knight too much, but he needs, in order:
recess shades
highlights
edge highlights

And for the next time: thin paint.
>>
>>53409836
I mostly play against nids sooooo i though the blood is pretty fitting.
About the blue carapce part i know what you mean i just dont really have a good paint to hilight that blue.

The struggle is real. I've literally just started painting myself and I find edge highlighting a pain, getting the first layer of highlight both neat AND visible is the problem, so right now I'm just focusing on making the first layer of highlight look decent while holding my minis at arms length.

I've never painted anything as big or as expensive as ForgeWorld stuff. Personally I'd hate to be in your position. :p

That's the color they were spray primed, don't worry the base color was waiting for me to choose a basing scheme. They'll be black soon enough I promise.

These models aren't even done yet, there's still a few touches I need to make. They're Alpha legion and I'm still horribly torn on whether to get decals for them or just give them generic symbols and intentionally leave the chapter symbol blank. Want it to look like these guys are pretending to be loyalists.
