I can't imagine how big primaris marines will be beside old guard sculpts now. Even the normal marines tower over then a fair bit.

Anyways, what are you guys working on?
>>
Guys

For faces I've been using cadian flesh tone and then agrax earthshade, followed by a touch up of cadian fleshtone again.

What is a better choice? Is there a better option for a flesh color? What base should I use?

Don't worry.
I'm sure when the get around to MILITARUM TEMPESTUS OCTANUS and do new models for the Guard that will also tower over your Templars, because the fundamental reason behind Primaris Marines is mostly just the same scale bloat that's basically been going on for years.

Fucking love custom character minis. Can we see him on his chapter-shoulder side?

Question: you doing brush or airbrush? How detailed you looking to go?

I don't own an airbrush so I brush. I'm not going for GW level detail, but I want to do some edge highlighting.
The chapter pauldron is just blank right now since I couldn't manage to get any Black Templars Pauldrons. I have an Imperial Fists pauldron that I may end up using instead.

If you want a basic, good black, just basecoat with black, skip any washes, and then edge highlight with a mid/dark grey. Then go in with a light grey and pick out some sharp corners to add more pop.

If you want to get a little fancier, mix black with some dark grey and use that as your basecoat, and wash with black before doing the rest. Gives a slightly deeper black.

Other parts are standard painting fare, but I imagine you'll be doing a lot of black. Good luck!
>>
>>53333575
Thanks. My main army is Black Templars, so I have some experience with painting black, but having advice always helps.

Those cheap little lightboxes you see on amazon and ebay aren't so bad. They're only plastic folding little jobbies but they get the job done well enough. The lights built into them are surprisingly strong - even with the black background they almost wash out my photos!
Oh well, now everyone can at least see just how poorly I paint. Should be fun for the whole family.

Which kind of Legion are we talking about here?

I hope you mean dish soap and nothing heavy duty. I left resin in diluted degreaser for four days a couple weeks ago, and it came out with a "sweaty" layer of some sort of byproduct that won't wash off.
>>
>>53335839
>I left resin in diluted degreaser for four days a couple weeks ago
why tho? Also not him, but i sue just normal soap you would use to wash hands and it works perfectly.
>>

Night Lords

It's just normal dish soap. Nothing super crazy. I just have a lot of bits. It's at least 2 full sets of torsos/heads/shoulders, plus recast versions of the old metal ones, plus their legion weapons, plus special weapons, ect. Admittedly, part of the problem is that I don't know what sort of lost in looking at yet.

I'd recommend a thin undercoat of black or a dark red over the primer, then a base coat of Bloody Red, then another thin glaze of dark red to fill in the shadows and panel lines. Finish it off by mixing Bloody Red with a bright yellow to highlight the edges of the armor panels. Use gunmetal for weapons and mechanical parts, and black highlighted with grey for secondary color panels.

If you'd rather step away from the studio scheme, look up "Soviet armor" and pick some earthy greens to fit.
>>
>>53335878
It was secondhand, and the primer was really thick in the crevices. I figured a longer soak would loosen that and weaken the glue at the same time.

Turns out degreaser also heavily oxidizes the surface of bare white metal in about 36 hours, though I still can't tell if the discoloration is accompanied by any structural effects.
>>
>>53333001
>>53332881
I like the piss filter you're using. Nice, healthy yellow.
>>
Is there any company that makes a yellow that coats worth a damn? I bought an Army Painter box set and none of the yellows are worth shit. All the other colors - especially the metallics - are awesome, but the yellows may as well be glazes.

carcharodon contemptor, just got the front piece done working on the claw next

do you guys think if i paint the assault cannon panels red itll look cool?

>>
>>53336058
Yellows are always quite translucent, same goes for many reds, it's just how those pigments are, so what you're looking for is an initial coat of a matte, super high pigment yellow, followed by layers of the yellow you want.

As for which colours are suited for that, the Vallejo Game Color Heavy paints should be good as a base (there is no Heavy Yellow, but Gold Brown may be suitable), I haven't used the "new" GW Base paints enough to have an idea how good they are at their job, but their "old" Foundation range was great for it as well.

>>53336206
exactly that, yes.
That Ochre will give you a nice base for your far more translucent normal yellows to go over.

problem #3 cloak doesn't have any means of being attached to the armor

you could have made it look a lot better by cutting off some bits like the tau symbol and inserting into the green stuff

also for straight lines and segmented bits, just place em in strips

Chest cannot be made smaller, I will add details to it via transfers eventually.

The torn parts I took a tip from Duncan to stipple agrax to represent dirt. Did it not come out well? The cloak itself is a banner from somewhere, had a WHF beastman head on it.

I know, I fucked up on the clasps but they wouldn't stick on. i originally was going to do it like a poncho but I'll try painting it in a way that makes it look attached.

After cleaning out my garage and realising I have a hoarding problem with hobby stuff, I managed to find an entire plastic tub of space marine sprues, half painted marines from a job lot I bought while drunk ebaying years ago and four rhino boxes circa 2000. Considering painting up a ultra smurfs army but unsure whether I should do them the classic yellow and blue or the modern gold and dark blue scheme.

I also found an entire army of necrons from third edition that are horribly painted as well as some unopened metal spider blister packs. Is a Necron army even relevant in 2017? I might strip them with Simple Green and paint them up if so.

I started painting last week but have only really had the opportunity to actually get to work on minis last Saturday and today. This Silver Knight is probably the best one I've made thus far (only done 5 minis so far though) and I'm pretty proud of it. You can't see it in this photo very well but the shield really stands out compared to the somewhat grimier armor and the little indents on the shield are dabbed with a gold to make them pop out more. The cape was also my first attempt at drybrushing (previously I had just done layers + shading) and I think it turned out pretty well.

GW brushes Just Werk for me. Base brush, layer brush, and detail brush is what? ~$20? I've used brushes from Reaper and Royal, and those seem about the same. Really I suspect it's hard to fuck up a paintbrush, although I do want to try Kolinski sable to see if I'm missing out on anything.

Also get pic related, a lot of people don't seem to use brush soap but this stuff is great. I used to go through a GW detail brush in a few months but with this your brush is restored to brand new condition. I use it when I've had a lot of paint built up on the brush to where it's starting to dry, and after I'm done painting. It takes a bit of trial and error to get it working right and allegedly it can restore ruined brushes but I've not been able to revive my destroyed brushes. But it keeps your good brushes good.

Guess I'll go with the gray/blue. I might be able to pull off a darker brown but I only have brown wash to make it darker and that would probably go down poorly, plus as >>53346448 says it works with the texture on the base better now that I think about it. The wash on that is even blue so it has a slight blue tint (it's the GW astrogranite scheme, astrogranite texture/drakenoff shade wash/longbeard gray drybrush)

Which liquitex varnish should I use as general protectant for my minis? I've heard some people say they just put a bit on the contact areas that will get rubbed in use but also have hard some people say they use varnish to get glossy effects on things like power swords.

Do I need matte varnish or gloss? I have some of that GW 'ardcoat stuff coming on my next order and that's a gloss varnish correct?
>>
>>53344961
Staples will be too big. Get your hands on some model tall grass, preferably a larger scale like 1:35 or 1:24, dye orange (or get it that colour if you can) and go to town with scissors.

Gloss for strength, matte for looks, then touch up shiny stuff with brush-on gloss.

I just got a few dozen blank minis and want to paint them. I've never really done painting before but I want to try it out and see if I find it enjoyable.
My understanding is that the "standard" is stuff from Games Workshop (at least for the Warhammer stuff) but that they're also really expensive and knock-offs are just as good. What are some cheaper paint brands that work well for minis?

You got matte, satin, and gloss varnishes. Generally speaking, it's best to gloss/satin coat your model once you're done, and then matte it down, since gloss/satin or stronger and will preserve your colors better.

Good coverage (except yellow and red, but that's to be expected). Metallics are great, don't look like glitter paint.

They do tend to separate bad, so you need to jerk them o-- I mean, shake the paints for 30 seconds to two minutes to get the medium and pigment back together again.

I'm clever enough to know that anything GW sells in this arena will be overpriced so I'm looking for suggestions. yeah, that's why I really wish I hadn't been so dumb as to try it out on a mini which I really liked. I guess I shouldn't paint

How on earth do you fill in tiny carvings on stuff?
I've tried using liquid greenstuff to get rid of the smurfs logo on this guy's Croxius and I feel I'm risking the definition of the skull in general to try to do so.

Anybody got a proper guide for this stuff?
>>
>>53352170
you use liquid or regular greenstuff, in a very small amount, and then once its dry, you file it down and smoothen it.

I usually use a little Krazy Glue. Liquid Greenstuff is a pain in the ass to use.

clear varnish works as well.
>>
>>53352109
Nah I think with good details it will look fine. I've not used druchii violet but looking at pictures it, like most citadel washes, is extremely dark when it pools. Their glaze range stays quite light and bright when it pools, which is why I think it works well for this. It looks like you've just let it pool a bit too much, that's all, if while it's still wet you go back in and siphon some of the wash out from the pooled area it will look better because you'll get much more of he base coat coming through.

For this guy he will probably still look good with the details done and if you're up for it some glazed highlights to bring back the pinkness.

A blue/white on the headlights would work better for contrast I think.

Took me 2 hours to base coat the armoured parts on a single fire warrior, I think I'm taking absurdly long.
>>
>>53354937

Can you explain what you're doing step by step? Two hours for a single FW is way too much.
>>
>>53352828
More of a gin blossoms situation than tumblr nose, I would guess
>>
>>53354958
I prime, basecoat the cloth parts in Mechanicus Standard Grey then I basecoat the armour in The Fang and fix up any little mistakes. Then I wash in Nuln Oil and layer on Russ Grey onto the armoured parts, finishing with edge highlight of Fenrisian Grey and painting little details like lenses etc. I did 2 fire warriors and they turned out really nicely, dunno why the rest are giving me so much trouble.
>>
>>53355006

I suggest you do some batch painting. For example, base all the cloth parts on your FWs, then all the armour parts. Wash all the models, then let dry. Highlight cloth parts, then highlight armor parts. Edge highlight everything, then add details.
>>
>>53355051
That's what I'm doing, I completed the first two at the same time. Now I'm batch painting the other 8. It took me 2 hours just to basecoat the armour on a single FW.

>new GW opened this weekend with the exclusive minis
>there were still plenty plenty of models left

There certainly were! They had *stacks* of the Collector's edition Captain and even a handful of that Primus Medicae in archaic Terminator Armour.

After seeing this pic I realized I have never seen the termie cap before.
What is that supposed to be on his powerfist?
Auxiliary grenade launcher?

>What is that supposed to be on his powerfist? Auxiliary grenade launcher?

Yes. Like many of the other limited edition models of late, he is a modern re-imagining of a classic First Edition sculpt from before the Dark Age of Technology.

b looks like he's yelling at people to get away from his waifu
>>
>>53349652
He's really fucking good! That's a complex model, and he did a damn fine job. Bit dark, but that might just be the lighting, and of course the fire and smoke transitions are a bit sloppy, but I wouldn't fault him when everything else looks great.

blend blend blend blend thinner paints blend blend blend you're so close to godhood you just have to blend and keep your lines sharper.

The kill team kit is really nice. I used several shotgun arms to make it all fit I believe but I should still be able to build others with all the leftovers, although they'll be smaller, without he mk8 legs.
I'm pretty happy with the two shield guys, especially the flail.

Good on her! Although she got a job at FW as an artist before that I reckon, and GW is a compaby where if you're in you can do pretty much everything given enough time and talent. I've lost count of how many WD/codices writers ended ip writing bookd for BL, or stuff like that. It's not a big stretch to think they're always on the lookout inside of their own ranks to use existing talent, and probably jumped on the occasion when she offered to paint a squad of gobbos.

I really want the new Termie Chaplain but I'll probably never be near a new GW for that.

>I really want the new Termie Chaplain but I'll probably never be near a new GW for that.

'Ere's da fing, boss: goin' da straight route at GW is gonna cost ya.

See this card? You need to get it filled out with visits and purchases at GW just to *qualify* to buy the new chaplain, and *then* you still have to pay for said chaplain ($25US, I imagine). How do you get your card filled out? Well, you get one skull for coming to an event, and one skull for each $20 of purchases you make ... da lad at the till even said something about having an approved post on the store's Facebook page - although I don't know how often they'll be willing to hand *that* one out.

I don't wanna sound like THAT guy, but... honestly? If yer perpechully strapped fer teef, you might wanna hook up wiv our friends in the People's Republic (or the Greeks or the Russians, if the fancy strikes you).
>>
>>53356464
Yeah I fifured thay out a long time ago. Oh well, I still need to paint the metal model before trying to get the plastic one anyway.
>>
>>53356464
is it just me or would that look a lot better without the nipple tassels?

maby it's just me, my favorite chaplain is still the metal jump pack chaplain.
>>
>>53356464
>You need to get it filled out with visits and purchases at GW just to *qualify* to buy the new chaplain
That's retarded even for GW.

>>53356553
I think it's a terrible model for a Chaplain, but could be made into a fairly decent Dark Apostle.
>>
>>53356553
It probably would to be honest. Those are the details too much indeed. Not sure you can not use them though.
>>
>>53356587
Indeed. The amount of models of that Chaplain sold like this must be super small. Every person that I know who got it got it at the opening, like the Termie Captain, not through their long, super expensive and bullshit system.
