Pathfinder General /pfg/

Have you ever played siblings with another player? What were those characters like? Even if you didn't, talk about your characters' brothers and sisters anyway!

Pfft. When I make it big, they'll shut their mouths when they get a look at my wad.

So apparently my GM wants us caught between several different demigods trying to influence the fall of an empire we're currently working for.

The emperor is one of the demigods and one of only two known to the general public (though they don't know he is a demigod). We've now encountered 7 total.

Apparently he has a hard on for tarot decks. We've met:
>The Hanged Man (the emperor)
>The Fool
>The Lovers (Actually two demigods)
>Wheel of Fortune
>Judgement
>Temperance

I'm still trying to determine how we don't simply get BTFO. We're level 7/mythic 2. As far as we can tell all the demigods are a lot stronger than that.
>>
>>53037459
Rule of escalations

If the Demigods act, they invite threats of their level or above.

Working through proxies is safer and keeps them at a distance from issues that may force their hand and expose them to getting a lucky arrow in the face
>>
>>53037471
And they'll generally try to coax the aid rather than force it at gunpoint like a certain Antipaladin goddess in Wrath of the Righteous.

Because while YOU might not have the power to take them down right now, any wise demigod will do well to remember that they were probably in that same exact spot not all that long ago. Even when these guys aren't a threat, it's only a matter of time before you run into something that IS.

And when that happens, you'd best fucking hope it's not something you used to bully that remembers the blood debt.
>>
>>53037446
If the wad doesn't shut them up, you could always cow them with your mighty lance

The TV series was very interesting in regards to his weapon.

Notably, Golgo himself is always on the bottom being ridden, doing none of the work, the shadow-butterfly that makes his face unmoving as ever.

Meanwhile the women are just... raping *themselves* on him, impaling themselves to the height of ecstasy as he watches the ceiling, expressionlessly, like some ancient immortal being who's long grown utterly devoid of any attachment to this realm of existence.

>Even if you didn't, talk about your characters' brothers and sisters anyway!

She's got 10 brothers and sisters! The oldest was probably the most important to everyone, and he was very brave, but stubborn, and quick to anger. Fiercely protective of his family and his realm, he died in an ill-advised attack on the troll clans, and it's haunted her ever since.

So I have been trying to look this up but there have been discussions on both sides of this issue. Are pistols considered light or one handed in terms of two weapon fighting? Some say they are light in consideration to crossbows and how they are light when fired one handed. Even the hand cross bow is mentioned. Others say that because it is listed as a one handed weapon it is one handed. But another counter point is that no ranged weapon ever had this classification of light, one, or two handed labels.

What you do guys think? Also has any of the Paizo people mentioned this anywhere?
>>
>>53037953
see >>53037954
>>
>>53037961
I treat them as light because shooting two guns is cool

>>
>>53037961
In real life, trying to fire a pistol of any appreciable power one handed is going to break your wrist
But also in real life, firing a wheellock with one hand isn't that hard, although reloading those types of weapons certainly take both hands
In other words, do what you feel is cool
>>
>>53037998
Speaking as a brother to a sister: Somebody PLEASE take that bitch off my hands.
>>
>>53038014
>having a bad imouto

>>
>>53037978
Yes it is cool, now let's say you solved your reloading problems of getting it down to a free action and having a hand free, how many attacks can you get if you combine two weapon fighting and rapid shot? 3?
>>
>>53038022
No, you can easily unload 9 attacks
>>
>>53038022

What's that 8th~ level Fighter with teleport-full attack trick?
>>
>>53038027
I don't get your math here, can you walk through it?
>>
>>53038048
TWF line at top levels gives you 7 attacks, 4 mainhand 3 offhand

add rapid shot and extra attack from haste

9 shots, enough to murder most enemies straight up because of how slingers work
>>
>>53038041
Dimensional assault?
>>
What does hex use look like? What are the somatic and verbal components of something like Misfortune?
>>
>>53038038
Too obviously satire.
They need to work on their subtlety.
>>
>>53038069
Now what about the double barrel pistol? That is 9 shots but with 18 bullets? Hell what about the dragon pistol? Now that is 9 shots with however many enemies you can fit in your attack cone.

Fuck, no wonder some GMs don't allow Gunslinger's in their games.
>>
>>53038038
Man, their formatting is fucked.
>>
>>53038107
dragon pistols are pretty fucking bad, 15 foot cones are tiny

Double Barreled guns are pretty gamebreaking and should be banned, yes

This is the inherent problem of the gunslinger, its either a game-raper when all its shit is online and blows enemies out of the water harder than an optimized paladin, or just garbage.

You can really see how Paizo's design chops have progressed from their early classes to their later ones.
>>
>>53038041
Speaking of fighters and full attacks, as a magic guy I have floating disk. Is it a move or standard action to direct the disk around? My idea is to have the fighter on the disk and I just move him around in the battlefield so he does not have to waste actions moving and he can full attack all day.

As a magus I also use full round actions but in the future if I was a wizard, I would help my buddy out. If it is a move action, I would move him around and still cast my spells with my standard action. If it is a standard action then it is moot I guess.
>>
>>53038147
Floating Disk moves at your speed and follows you around, it can be no further than 5ft away from you
>>
>>53037961
RAW, they're onehanded. Hand crossbows have a specific exception.
>>
>>53038123
Double barelled guns got nerfed boyo.

You can't fire them both amid attack actions or full attacks anymore, it's a Standard action to do so now if I recall correctly.

>>53038107
Also recall the misfire chances here. Double barelled and scatter guns have worse misfires than normal, and any misfire will stop your full attack fucking dead, forcing you to stop and fix it.
>>
>>53038182
oh, well thats good

I've kept very poor tabs on gun rules
>>
>>53038163
The spell says "If not otherwise directed, it maintains a constant interval of 5 feet between itself and you." But you are directing the floating disk so it would not stay at 5 feet? So at the lowest level it has a distance of 30 feet. So you direct the disk to "move" and stay at the distance of 30 feet. Right next to an enemy. Where your fighter can smack it. Of course if you move out of that range then it follows you. Keeping that 30 feet spacing.
>>
>>53038170
Light Crossbows are two handed but are considered light when one handing it. This was also the point that was brought up. But light crossbows are not considered two handed. But it mentions light handed cause of the interaction with two weapon fighting.
>>
>>53038147
That's pretty funny
>>
>>53038147
No one has answered my question on what action it is to direct a a floating disk.

Another thing that I thought up. Is the 3 feet above a surface a flat 3 feet, or no more than 3 feet? Can the floating disk go lower than 3 feet? Can it go 0 feet? I ask because then I don't have to wait for the Fighter to climb aboard. I can scoop him up on a magic carpet ride to behead some goblins.
>>
>>53038307
Thats because it doesn't say anywhere what kind of action it is

based off of other spells like Flaming Sphere i would i guess its a move action?
>>
How does sniping work with full attacks?
>>
>>53038316
If that is what we have to go on then WIZARD MAGIC CARPET UBER RIDES ARE NOW A GO! NEXT STOP, THAT GOBLIN'S FACE!

Now my next question is the 3 feet thing. Is it a set distance or a maximum. SEE THAT FIGHTER? YOU ARE GETTING A FREE RIDE WITHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT.*scoops up the party fighter*

Trying to see what it would be action economy wise. If they don't have to waste a turn getting on it, this would be very ideal.
>>
>>53038343
It doesn't
>>
>>53038348
They would probably have to step up onto it
>>
Which sniping are you talking about? There are many references to sniping. Are you talking about how many times you have to roll stealth to stay in stealth?

The two situations are after every attack or after all attacks are complete.
>>
>>53038366
>>53038343
Forgot to reply.
>>
>>53038366
How many times you roll to stay in stealth, or if you can full attack out of it at all or if it just sneak attacks on the first hit and then not on the others.
>>
>>53037938
That's not how that works at all. That's not how anything works.

The entire point of "I like you. Come over to my house and fuck my sister" is that you are, at least subconsciously, accepting to join your family's bloodlines. If this person was of the opposite gender from yours, you may even pursue them yourself.

It's a same-generation version of setting your children up together.
>>
>>53038535
mfw you are a dude bro with your party bro and wish you could be closer but no homo. So you set your sister up with him so that he becomes your true bro. But twist he has been trying to set you up with his sister. So now you are double true bros. Seriously no homo.
>>
>>53038561
My parents and godparents did basically that.
Father and his best friend's little sister, and said friend turned out to have been getting shotaconned by dad's older sister (five years difference and she started 'using' him when she was in highschool) since before my parents even started dating.

>Meanwhile I'm sitting through this thinking "oh fucking gods I've read like four doujins with that storyline"
>>
How the fuck do people without full BAB get by attacking? How do the Rogues and Hunters and Magus of the world operate?
>>
>>53038600
I mean if you should also post those doujins just as reference points. For scientific reasons. <_<
>>
>>53038635
I'll not do this on a blue board.

Okay actual reason is I can't do this because work filters sadpanda in the "someone's about to have a chat with you" fashion.
>>
>>53038629
Well for magus they can spell combat so that is 2 sword swings if you choose a spell with touch. Sure you get your iterative attack later than the party fighter but you have still have ways to catch up. I mean I have a hell knight party member that does big damage. But with my crit magus I can keep up and sometimes surpass his damage output.

Friend of mine and I have played sibling characters on two separate occasions, once as a stereotypical knight (Friend) and his adopted, looking to steal the knight's claim to nobility brother (Me). The second occasion was as an antipaladin of not!Khorne (Me) and a witch devoted to not!Tzeentch (Friend).

Both times were fun, had good dynamics going to keep it from being boring.

Having trouble deciding on a race for a Magic Item crafter.
I've narrowed it down to two: either Samsaran or Boggle, which is a 3rd-party race that my DM would certainly allow.
Samsarans have a +2 Int and a +2 to two skills, while Boggles get a +2 Int, +2 to one of a few skills (can't be Spellcraft but can be Craft), but get a racial feat that lets you ignore the crafting feat requirements of magic items by adding +5 to the DC,
Basically, it comes down to trading a +2 to the check or not needing the feats to make things.
Is not taking the feats for items good enough to skip a +2?
To complicate matters, my DM uses a homebrew system where burning experience lets you take bonus feats, skill ranks, and other things each level, so I could potentially hit level 1 with 4 bonus feats.

Thanks for the help.
>>
>>53043056

Oh, magus is pretty good-most of the complaints against it seem to be that the class feels inflexible in terms of its options, so strong builds tend to be very, very similar to each other.
>>
>>53043056
I can't speak for the rest of the thread, but I love the Magus dearly, which is why I'm so critical of everything about it. The Magus as-is, with the way the rules are right now, is a one-build-only class (two if you count Eldritch Archer) with a piss-poor feature progression past about 3rd level, and a spell list that looks like they had their intern give up a 1/3rd of the way through filling it out.

>Difference between regular rogue and unchained rogue
One is an NPC class, the other is a weak PC class. You should NEVER use core rogue unless you hate yourself. Also Unchained Monk is worth noting, because while it's still MAD as fuck it can at least be a functional class in the right circumstances.

While it might be inevitable that we put our own setting out for Starfinder,

Are you going to have a custom starting point?

Are there any groups you plan on including from other media?

What about enemies? Do you have any ideas for those?

Assuming you have the available feats necessary to make it happen, would you ever /not/ want a familiar on a class that doesn't normally get one?

Are there any guides or resources for optimizing a familiar?

What are some cool things you can do with a familiar?
>>
So I promised /pfg/ some Curse of the Lazy Throne greentext yesterday, and I'm here to deliver. I last left off after session 3, so I'll recap the last two sessions.

Our party is:
>Ein: Inquisitor (Monster Tactician/Urban Infiltrator). Pharasma a best.
>Ophelia: Bloodrager (Draconic Bloodline) and self-styled protector of the innocent.
>Beatrice: Medium (Empath), fortune-teller, and the group's morality pet.
>Sofia: Soulknife (Psychic Armory), and a stunningly suave socialite.
>And introducing Alinza, an NPC and Ophelia's hypercompetent orphan friend with all the dice luck.

>At the end of Session 3, the party was christened special agents of the Korvosan Guard.
>The mission: to arrest Verik Vancaskerkin, a deserter who brought some men with him to a hideout in Old Korvosa, and find out why he left the Guard.
>The target: a butcher shop called "All the World's Meat".
>The plan: none at the moment.
>Before they move, though, Ein and Ophelia go off to gather some information on Vancaskerkin and his men, who call themselves the Cow Hammer Boys.
>Sofia and Beatrice procure some supplies from the quartermaster, namely a couple CLW potions
>The latter two regroup back at Zellara's. Alinza has already cleaned up most of the house and converted it to a living space.
>On the way back from their recon, it begins to rain imps and pseudodragons on Ein and Ophelia.
>Once everyone's gathered, we share information - namely that the Cow Hammer Boys are giving away free meat every morning.
>This is red flag #1, since people in the city have been rationing food.
>The Cow Hammer Boys are also hiring themselves out as mercenaries, as long as you ask for the "Night's Special Cuts".
>This is red flag #2.
>The possibility of Soylent Meat being people is discussed.
>Meanwhile, Alinza is happy to find out that the party is working with the Guard again
>She begins to psychoanalyze everyone and is apparently really spot-on
>Hypercompetent.
>Banter is traded, and plans are made.
>>
>>53044418
>, would you ever /not/ want a familiar on a class that doesn't normally get one?
You don't like the idea of having a familiar? You don't need a bonus to skills? You don't want an extra mouth to feed? It's not thematically appropriate? Lots of reasons.
>>
>>53044453

>Sofia and Alinza will stop by All the World's Meat and grab a sample, getting a good look at the building in the process.
>Fortunately, Beatrice lives in Old Korvosa, and so the party decides to pack up and stay at Beatrice's for the night.
>On the way, though, the party notices that a small group of imps have been stalking them.
>Initiative is rolled, and since we noticed the imps we get a surprise round.
>Ein and Ophelia - with the help of some Celestial Eagles - take point, readying themselves to smash some imp face
>Sofia does her soulknife thing, throwing psychic warhammers at people.
>Beatrice protects Alinza with her trusty scarf, soulknife, and mind powers
>We also get some help from a pair of pseudodragons who noticed the fight
>While they're annoying, these imps are no match for the party, and we fight them off without much fuss.

>Session 5 begins at Beatrice's - a small, cozy, rustic 1st-floor apartment in Old Korvosa.
>The party goes over the plan one more time, with one small addition.
>Ein gets to work setting up a portable alchemist's lab (never leave home without one!) and tries to teach everyone the basics.
>There's some difficulty (low rolls errywhere) but with the party's help, he manages to craft a few thunderstones.
>The party goes to sleep, and Beatrice's house is so comfy that we get a +2 to any roll the next day
>The next day, Sofia and Alinza, the former dressed in rags thanks to an un-errata'd Sleeves of Many Garments, go off to fetch some meat.
>The Cow Hammer Boys basically give them some ham and rush them out the door, barely giving the pair time to scout the area.
>As they leave, though, they get a glimpse of the pens... and there aren't nearly enough animals here to help feed an entire city.
>Ein, meanwhile, recruits the rest of the party to get crafting.
>Many more thunderstones are made.
>Sofia and Alinza regroup at Beatrice's. Thanks to the party's discerning eyes (read: Heal check), they find out that the ham...
>>
>>53044060
Feat tax rules? Where can I find these rules? Are they an alternative rule set from paizo or a homebrew thing that is "universaly" accepted?
>>
>>53044479

>Is actually ham. Shitty, uncured ham, but it's pig.
>The party starts to think up ways to sneak into the building, when Ein realizes something.
>The floor is made of stone. Earth Elementals can glide right through that shit.
>Night falls and the party gets to work.
>Unfortunately, there's a bell that rings every time the front door is opened...
>But Sofia slices right through that shit.
>The elemental unlocks the door from the inside, everyone goes into stealth mode (yes, even Ophelia)
>There are a couple men playing cards upstairs, but everyone manages to be quiet enough that they aren't tipped off (yes, even Ophelia)
>Beatrice gets her hypercompetent moment here, unlocking a side door off the main hallway.
>And inside... is a room full of day-old meat hanging from hooks all across the room.
>Some of this meat is people.
>Sofia opens the door at the end of the hallway and immediately NOPEs back when she realizes that's where the meat is... processed, let's say.
>It's a pretty greusome sight, but Ein and Beatrice soldier on and begin to investigate...
>When they hear the sound of someone unlocking the outside door!
>Turns out it's four of the Cow Hammer Boys... and they're dragging an unconscious elf with them.
>This can't stand, and so it's initiative time.
>Last Surprise.mp3 (thanks Pinko)
>Beatrice manages to land a Mind Thrust, and Ein summons another Earth Elemental which proceeds to stagger one of the Boys in one hit.
>This Elemental manages to be a fucking all-star btw, only gets hit once
>The commotion downstairs, however, alerts Vancaskerkin and his three guards upstairs...
>Fortunately, Sofia and Ophelia are there to intercept them.
>It also seems like the Boys downstairs are keeping the fact that Soylent Meat is people a bit of a secret from Vancaskerkin.
>Sofia and Ophelia lay into Vancaskerkin's men, the former weakening them and the latter KOing them with a sap.
>Well, one of them might have died, but acceptable casualties, right?
>>
>>53044489
>Downstairs, Beatrice is keeping one of the Boys busy while Ein and his Elemental engage the other three.
>They're trying to convince the party to let them go, but they make two really big mistakes.
>1. Beatrice's spirit literally will not let her ignore this crime, and
>2. Never, ever, bring up Ein's dead fiance.
>Vancaskerkin is far more reasonable, though, and after his guards are eliminated he goes along with Ophelia and Sofia.
>Okay, so maybe Ophelia had to rage and 'convince' him to do so.
>The guard really didn't care about our methods anyway, right?
>The Cow Hammer Boys notice that they aren't really getting anywhere and they're slowly losing the fight, so the ones that aren't KO'd withdraw
>One of them runs into Sofia and Vancaskerkin, and surrenders.
>The other is dragged back into the building by a raging Ophelia.

Unfortunately, at this point it was getting pretty late so we wrapped up quickly - the elf girl woke up screaming bloody murder and Vancaskerkin surrendered
after realizing the truth about Soylent Meat. We're probably going to begin the next session by interrogating Vancaskerkin.

The game is moving at a slowish pace but the character interaction is pretty good. It's a slow burn but we're all having a lot of fun with it.

>What are they fighting over?

A system previously inaccessible due to being the celestial lair of an Ether Drake, now open for exploitation after said Drake's death at the hands of a Dragonslayer. What began as a simple extraction operation has turned into a four-way brawl as three corporations and the natives of the lush garden world that served as both part of the Drake's hoard and source of "exotic" food battle for independence, wealth and power.

The party are either Corporates, Natives or Freelancers working with the Dragonslayer to either guide the conflict into gentler waters or simply make as much cash as possible before bailing. The primary hoard of the Ether Drake is basically Treasure Planet.

During my own group's short-lived run through Curse of the Crimson Throne, we gathered information to learn that the Cow Hammer Boys were also handling thuggish assassinations. We sent them off on a wild goose chase to kill the already-dead Gaedren Lamm in his fishery.

When the Cow Hammer Boys left, we unlocked some doors, snuck up, confronted Verik Vancaskerkin, and then somehow managed to peacefully entreat him into coming along. We also successfully identified the silver dagger as a raktavarna rakshasa, eliminated it, and resolved to investigate why such an object was in Verik's possession.

Even by the GM's admission, our group had managed a completely flawless run of the mission, and had found it most amusing that we sent off people to kill Gaedren Lamm.

The 2 feat route requires 13 Cha and it's your character level -2 for the familiar.

The one that gives full benefits without needing 13 Cha is a 3 feat route. Most people can't spare 3 feats.

Also the benefits of a familiar are as follows:
+4 Init/+2 to a save/+3 to a skill/+1 Nat armor (choose one)
+2 Sense Motive/Perception (+4 at 10 ranks)

If I'm not a caster delivering touch spells does literally nothing for me. Most of its other features are either defense or the ability to talk to me. Speaking with animals of its kind is the only other with a bit of utility.

Honestly? It's not that great. I have better things to spend my feats on.

>>
>>53044979
Couldn't you get a Mauler, or some other archetype'd familiar that trades things away?
>>
>>53041357

>the doppelganger-spawn ART

The doppelganger-spawn alternate racial trait is amazingly undercosted.

You can select the Rebound drawback for Alteration and take the Perfect Imitation talent. Suddenly, for the price of some trivial racial traits, you can now take on the appearance of any humanoid form of your size, transforming even your clothing and equipment to boot. You receive a large Disguise bonus for it too, and can pick up darkvision or natural weapons. This costs no daily resources at all.
>>
>>53045014
Mauler is generally bad outside of a few specific familiar types and even then it requires more feats for evolved familiar/mauler's endurance.

Unless you're a high HP character the mauler will never have enough HP to be safe in melee. It'll die then cost a shit ton to replace.
>>
>>53045008
>Speaking from experience, I take it
Yeah, I'm talking to you aren't I. Familiars are a trash concept on anything that isn't a Wizard or a Witch and should be restricted to those classes only.

Not every action can be aid another'd. Sure, it can help on some things, but many skills don't have anything they can aid with.

>Or hand that +2 to somebody else.
And lose all your benefits for having a familiar because it's not next to you.

That's only if your familiar has hands. There are only 2 familiars with hands, the Monkey and Compy.

I had pitched the plan to the group (and they went along with it) because we investigated the butchery only one in-game day after trouncing Gaedren Lamm.

I imagine that if Gaedren Lamm had been arrested rather than killed, the plan still would have worked. The idea was to entice the Cow Hammer Boys with a high bounty against a high-profile target, and they did not have the foresight to ask for payment up-front. One day during heavy rioting is not enough time for word to spread around of Gaedren Lamm's death or arrest.

The 2 feat route also opens up other feats that allow you to continue taking Arcane bloodline powers which are useful for a lot of casters. The Arcane bloodline is really, really good.

Charisma is also a stat that plenty of classes/archetypes use for casting, so it's not like it's uncommon for a caster to have 13 Charisma.

The character level -2 hurts but for a lot of characters the benefits make it a worthwhile choice anyway.

Aid Another.
I've watched far too many low level characters flailing away hoping for 19s to hit, when instead they could all be making sir beefshack untouchable and highly likely to hit.

Relatedly, our fucking monk. TWFing while flurrying, +1 to hit total, misses damn near everything three times a round.

Arcane bloodline only benefits you as a caster, casters rely on a limited number of feats for everything they need, particularly divine casters like clerics and oracles.

>Charisma is also a stat that plenty of classes/archetypes use for casting, so it's not like it's uncommon for a caster to have 13 Charisma.
It's not uncommon for a charisma caster, fucking obviously. What other great revelations are you going to tell me next? That often someone with power attack has 13 strength?

I'm not even saying it's a bad choice. I'm saying it's not the right choice for everyone, even every caster. Casters often don't have 13 cha or need their feats for other shit.

Anyone ever try out the 3PP class Vanguard?
It looks balanced and I had been planning a Master/Blaster type of character before I found it.
