Posting again:
Last session my GM introduced 'something' to us:
>the party has traveled like 500 miles up into the mountains north of where most people live
>cold as fuck, snowing
>there are old structures on the mountain tops
>we came looking for treasure
>nothing there at first
>party is attacked by ghosts
>they aren't human ghosts, GM describes them as 'formless congealment of agony'
>press on
>some of our hirelings due to ghosts
>press on into the structures
>get attacked by another incorporeal creature
>GM describes it as 'sapient animalistic screaming'
>start finding treasure, mostly weird art pieces and statues made of precious metals
>most of the art is made of fractals
>have to make will saves while looking at it or get nauseated
>deeper down we find a massive fucking cavern
>the bottom of the cavern is just a huge featureless stone cube
>no seams or anything
>try to pas through it with earth glide, it's layered with other materials
>decide to crack it open
>set the hirelings to digging and set up base came
>dig towards center of the cube
>things attack us while we're doing this and explore a bit more
>most of them are either incorporeal, weird insect things with 16 legs, or ooze things
>find depictions of what our cleric works out is probably religious text in a language we don't know
>depicts a cycle of death and rebirth but with added steps
>GM described it as similar to Bhavacakra, a buddhist thing
>end up cracking open the stone finally
>inside it a stable made for humans
>there is a stone marionette on one side
>it's take itself apart and reconstructing itself in a chair on the other side of the table
>we watch it for a while it does this back and forth
>try to talk with it
>cleric asks "who are you?"
>it starts repeating "who are you?" in a louder and louder voice until our hirelings need to leave due to sonic damage
>suddenly goes silent as it finishes transferring itself

Last session ended there. The fuck am I dealing with?

Pretty good, though there are some weak picks in the spell lists, as well as some laughably strong ones that it helps to be aware of.

What are your opposed schools?
>>
>>53015775
Abjuration and transmutation
>>
>>53015819
Transmutation is a pretty huge school. Most of its spells are too situational to be very good, but you'll be missing out on Disintegrate and a lot of buffing spells.

You're not missing out on too much with Abjuration, barring Dispel Magic.

Your DM has read a certain story.
He is using a certain monster.
You're fucked if you don't run. But it's also as fast as a train so you're fucked anyway. Use the hirelings as decoys and bolt man.

Have you considered not taking Leadership?

Alternatively, if your DM has already okayed Leadership, have you considered the Instructor Wizard archetype? It's basically an upgrade to just taking the feat
>>
What's the best improved familiar?
>>
>>53015913
Original poster you're on your honor to stay away from the story until you're done withe the area.
At the Mountains of Madness is a good portion of it with sprinklings of other Lovecraft, not sure what the marionette is from.
>>
>>53015904
You should see if he lets you take leadership first.

But otherwise don't feel bad. A lot of the time DMs love it when the PCs are tough because then they don't have to pull punches. Try to get a dragon familiar, make halfdragon babies, then build a tower in a demiplane and a dungeon in the mortal plane so you can rule. Become a lich and put your phylactery in the tower, and when your dragon gets big make her a dracolich. Have your cleric become pontiff of a new religion with you as god of death anon. Don't spoil the chance.

Flameo Hotman
>>
>>53015933
I'm gonna be taking leadership for more than just one reason. Eventually I want to be a Nosferatu (my character was actually originally taught necromancy by one and I'm currently looking for him). But if my party doesn't just kill me I'll need a small cult to handle transport of my coffin and maintaining my undead farm. Also need them to feed.

Not much different than what I plan on doing lol. And she okayed leadership already, after I told her I was gonna play an evil character I had to come up with a believable back story, motivation and personality, as well as goals and reasons to adventure with others
Making sure I'm not just chaotic stupid basically.
>>
>>53015987

Anon, no one's going to remember that name.
>>
>>53015930
John.
>>
>>53015999
I want to become a Nosferatu and build a small cult around myself. Eventually I want to manufacture large mounts of death dream or whatever that poisons called and have my cult distribute it in small villages and Hamlet's then cast curses earth and basically create blighted plaguelands and build an undead army, eventually bringing about the destruction of society.
>>
>>53016026
I like your style
>>
>>53016027
HOW COULD I BE SO EASILY DEFEATEEEEED?!
>>
>>53016026
Consider teaming up with the cleric and convince him to become a lich. Not a lot of people make cleric necromancer liches, but they play the role of high undead pontiff very well. I don't know how you could get the druid to come with you on that, unless the druid is a blightdruid who likes mushrooms or something like that.
>>
>>53016045
That's assuming my party doesn't just kill me after a while. I plan on being evil, just in a plotting methodical way and becoming a fucking Nosferatu might be too much for them
>>
>>53016067
has a good point. Clerics are much better at raw-necromancy compared to wizards, and have the ability to take that one archetype that gives him a permanent skeletal champion that gains levels and does not cost control HD
>>
>>53016067
The cleric is true neutral and has the travel domain I think. Don't know much about the druid yet. What really scares me at low level is the chaotic good barbarian
>>

the only space one I am aware of is this. Already applied so it seems alright to me.

As for the house of the void, who knows. They are so mysterious, I can only imagine them as tall people dressed in solid black robes with a void within the cowl so you can't even see them.
>>
>>53016088
Unfortunately the characters are already made. We are each getting a solo level 1 adventure that's going to leave us all heading towards the same place so we meet up at level two. I know the druid has something to do with bones being a big theme
>>
>>53016098
Don't worry too much about the barbarian. If they end up playing like a barbarian they will probably be straying closer to chaotic neutral side of the alignment, and maybe with convincing you can get help you with their big buff hands

Some of you may have seen 7th- or 8th-level Spheres of Might builds that abuse the Alchemy sphere to wholly obliterate large radii of absurdly high-CR enemies. I would like to revisit such builds at a much lower level to help prove a point: Cluster Toss and Snap Toss are both completely broken talents, because Alchemy damage already seems to be balanced around "1 formula throw = 1 attack action," so Cluster Toss and Snap Toss are effectively free attack actions for a trivial cost.

Cluster Toss and Snap Toss might be balanced if they were limited to regular alchemical items, but as they currently stand, they blow apart encounters even at low levels.

To that end, here is a 2nd-level Alchemy bomber. It brings out a turn one nova (surviving the first turn by way of high AC, Cold Iron Call, and Durable), and then lazes off.

Level: 2nd
Race: Human (focused study, heart of the fields)
Class: Blacksmith 1/alchemist (mortal chemist, tinkerer with valet familiar) 1
Ability Scores (20 point buy): Strength 8, Dexterity 12, Constitution 14, Intelligence 18+2, Wisdom 12, Charisma 7
Traits: Alchemical Adept (Magic), Illuminator (Religion), Student of Philosophy (Social)

Feats:
• Focused Study: Skill Focus (Craft [alchemy])
• 1st-level: Magnum Opus (Craft [alchemy])

Martial Tradition: Warden:
• Equipment sphere (no dedication): Armor Training, Shield Training
• Guardian sphere (Indifferent Defender drawback, 1 free): Cold Iron Call
• Shield sphere (Inoffensive Blocker drawback, 1 free): Deflecting Shield

Other Talents: 4 = 2 alchemical expertise + 1 blacksmith + 1 equipment specialist
• Alchemy (Formula package, Poison package, Natural Skill drawback, 3 free): Improved Acid Flasks, King's Sleep, Swift Toss
• Equipment (1 free): Distance Shot
• Guardian sphere (already have this): Durable

Key Equipment (1,000 gp):
• 550 gp: Masterwork full plate, self-crafted
• 257 gp: Darkwood heavy shield
• 75 gp: Portable alchemist's lab
• 50 gp: Masterwork backpack

Craft (alchemy):
2 ranks
+5 Intelligence modifier
+3 class skill
+1 racial from heart of the fields
+2 trait from Alchemical Adept
+3 Skill Focus
+1 competence from alchemist
+1 circumstance from portable alchemist's lab
+2 initiative valet familiar's Cooperative Crafting
Total: +20, take 15 with Magnum Opus for 35, enough for two upgrades on Improved Acid Flasks

Initiative:
1 Dexterity modifier
+4 initiative familiar
Total: +5

Range increment:
10 splash weapon
+15 Distance Shot
Total: 25 feet

Attack bonus with splash weapon out to first range increment (5 to 25 feet):
1 BAB
+1 Dexterity modifier
+1 Throw Anything
Total: +3, needs to hit only an AC 5 grid intersection

Damage for Improved Acid Flasks:
2d6 base with Craft (alchemy) ranks
+1d6 Alchemy dedication (see Additional Rules for timing on expending martial focus)
+5 Intelligence modifier from alchemist
+2 sharpen weapons
Total: 3d6+7 (average 17.5), twice over

Area:
• Full damage to all targets within 10 feet of the point of contact (assuming both hit, average 35 damage)
• Half damage to all targets within 20 feet of the point of contact (assuming both hit, average 17.5 damage)
• 1 point of damage to all creatures within 30 feet
Targets who take at least 2 points of acid damage from the initial attack take half the total damage again on the following round.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1E2-s8weiulPoBQjdI05LBzOUToyoZIdSsLKxHAvf8F8/edit#gid=3
• Average CR 3 Hit Points: 30.3
• Average CR 4 Hit Points: 39.2
• Average CR 5 Hit Points: 53.4

As you can see, this 2nd-level character stands a very high chance of wiping out a cluster of CR 3s or CR 4s in a single round, or possibly a cluster of CR 4s or CR 5s given an extra round of lingering damage.
>>
>>53016442
Inner Beauty trait will give you +4 on one craft check a day, if that's enough to up anything.

The character wants to be able to recraft their Improved Acid Flasks after every encounter (this takes only 3.75 minutes per flask with the Equipment sphere dedication), not just once per day.

The higher-level versions of this build blow apart even higher-CR enemies in even larger radii, and have the longevity to last two or three rounds hurling Improved Acid Flasks against AC 5.

Abjuration is where they put all the protective spells, which is extremely important.

Transmutation is just where they dumped all the shit they couldn't figure out a better place for, which means the Transmutation spell list is about x2.5 the size of most other spell lists, and that means fucking oodles of options. It's one of the best specialization options for a reason.

I haven't played Pathfinder in quite a while, but I've been invited for a campaign starting this weekend. I really wanted to play a tanky character, but I don't know what class to choose. Before, I would have just chosen synthesist summoner, but as I understand it that's been banned/nerfed since last I played.

So I ask, what's the best class for tanking? I assume that its paladin, but I wanna make sure.
>>
>>53016617
The Stonelord archetype that Paladins can take is one of the more fun tanking builds, in my opinion.

Name/ Callsign: Abagale "Fallen Angel" Ariel, pilot of "Archangel'
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Race/Gender: Spaceborn Female
Class: Eldritch Archer (magus) VMC: Ranger
Party role
Foot: Rifle user, magic damage, scout
Mech: Long range sniper, magic damage, air support, scout
Sheets: wip
Abagale
'Archangel'
Backstory
wip
Athos pilot, was trained in long range weaponry, as well as adding "old world" magic into the mix to fit her mecha's design. She was born and raised in the Athos's spacecraft. She was chosen as one of the five to leave the spacecraft after another member was confirmed dead on Rezia.
(can easily swap out Athos with a private military group if you wish to keep the mercenary families as a very special case)
Personality: Abagale is a little unhinged, some would say. She is a happy go-lucky type of girl who would happily party the night away with a complete stranger. However, offer her a challenge, and if it is something she could do, she might just accept it. Very much so if you ask for a duel. Just don't expect anything close range with her. When she is in a job, or in a duel, she expects to win, and she will make sure she does if she needs to.
Signature system: Astral Rifle: 'Archangel' is equipped with a recoilless rifle (or the like), but has been heavily modified. The rifle's technology is mixed in with a bit of magic, a single crystal helping power the rifle. The rifle's range is no laughing matter, just like a sniper rifle in the hands of a marksman, the Astral Rifle's range exceeds that of most, if not all, other mech-based rifles. Not only that, but the pilot must wear a special 'glove' inside the cockpit, allowing them to channel magic straight into the rifle, mixing it's power with the bullets it fires. (Sniper class recoilless rifle with magus spellstrike capabilities.)

So, we are playing pre-made character. The GM has decided to distribute our characters across the land Baldur's Gate style. You have to find them, if you want to play them. What are the best methods to find a specific person/character with more/less information?
>>

Because there's no one for Shizuka to fuck like that in HV, even the butler is a dad.
>>
>>53016798
They did confirm that in the last episode, yes.
But I feel it's mostly that GMs are either uncomfortable with sex being a thing (especially in meatspace games), want to do the fucking rather than being fucked, or are more interested in/better at making submissive waifu-bait than attractive and aggressive women.

That last part is going to be even more rare on /pfg/ considering this place's obsession with cuckolding, and anybody who has designs on an NPC is going to scream about getting NTR'd if someone else is more immediately receptive to her advances than them.

Last time in /PFG/, our group just reached 8th level for the first time, and the game already feels like it's steadily approaching rocket tag.

On top of this, our DM pretty much drops encounters on our heads now; even trying to be careful, we're very lucky if we see hostiles ahead of time to make one round's worth of preparations, and most encounters just pop up or are ambushes.

I was thinking of running a Pathfinder game before, but looking at the escalation in practice, I'm wondering how others play and run the game. I've heard E6 is a style that resolves some of those issues.

It's not bad for a low-level adventure, but the key here is that you're trading off precise strike and weapon training. Going all in on Inspired Blade would, in comparison, give you the benefits of Improved Critical, and a +9 to damage (+16 if you spend a panache point on precise strike), and that would last ALL DAY.

As it is, your character is only going to be able to exploit Archaeologist's Luck for a few rounds a day, and if any combat lasts past the first 10 rounds or so, you're fucked.

If you care more about the Bard's spells, you should probably go for Arcane Duelist instead. If you care about damage, go all in on Swashbuckler, or at least use Bard or Paladin as your dip rather than dipping Inspired Blade and then going into another class.

Hard to say.

GATTAI could be interesting, but one thing is it would depend on both the willingness and the compatibility of other partymembers.

Berserker drive (rage system) could be interesting if it was properly fleshed out: "bigger rage blade" is just a weapon

Gemini Drive same deal; if it's just "lol the mech gets two actions" that's both uninteresting and really fishing for bonuses

Amber Eye could prove interesting if it's doing something like planar traits or screwing line of sight

Jet Magnum's just a weapon but at least it's not just a range/size up of an existing ability and can be a system/theme of its own

The nanomachines are just DGcells. It's a handy thing to have; not best idea but it's simple and functional

From purely only what's written there, I think my favorites would be Jet Magnum, Amber Eye and GATTAI, in that order.

Aether Lance is incredibly easy to calculate damage for.
Its strength is its multi targeting and mobility, in a 1v1 fight they're pretty much just using aether channel and smacking the enemy once per round.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/combat/#TOC-Throw-Splash-Weapon

A miss with a thrown splash weapon does not cause *that* great a deviation in squares, and a grid intersection has merely AC 5, so the party should be safe unless the Alchemy bomber is throwing the Improved Acid Flasks very close to the party.

Later, three levels in conscript with a sphere specialization in Alchemy can help prevent focused fire:
>Alchemy
>Chemical Specialization (Ex): Starting at 3rd level, whenever the conscript throws a splash weapon, he can select 1 square, +1 square per 4 points of base attack bonus he possesses; these squares are not affected by the splash damage of that splash weapon. In addition, the conscript learns how to create an antivenom for any poison he knows the corresponding talent for; he can prepare such an antivenom in 10 minutes; if the conscript has a poison prepared of the corresponding type, he can convert it into an antivenom as a full-round action.

How would you describe/roleplay a Wizard with no ranks in knowledge arcana or spellcraft?

A druid with no ranks in survival?

An alchemist with no ranks in Craft(Alchemy)?

In character of course, out of character the answer is "dumbass".

A sorcerer who doesn't really understand the concept of magic but is good at channneling it and gets a "feel" for it but not in an academic sense (same for wizard except more like rope-memorization of spells rather than their essence and how they work)

A druid with no ranks in survival isn't as weird as the others, just someone who is very reliant on their given powers.

Alchemist is a little harder, though..

>being this ignorant of how real combat in game takes place.

Look, I understand that the math screams out "combat should be over in two turns max" but the reality is that there are often more things going on than simply "I cast this combat ending spell and the dmaage dealer hits three times doing enough damage to kill the enemy".

Positioning, number of enemies, and actually using the monster roles to combat the types of characters in the party rather than relying solely on "CR" without that all important knowledge of "this type of monster counters this type of character class effectively" changes how combat works immensely. The Schroninger wizard that /tg/ says all full casters are capable of being is a lie, and in combat there is a lot more to consider than the sheer numbers and supposedly infallible mechanics of the crunch.

it's like the person who claimed that 18th level mythic characters can instagib all the Archdevils without actually readign what any of the archdevils were capable of doing and how they actually worked. If he had, then he would have known that 7 of them not only ignored his ultimate assault team but would have killed them outright upon arrival. The math says one thing, but the reality of the rules says something entirely contradictory, and 'in actual play' is another scenario entirely unrelated to the previous two.

I think some kind of Arcanist would work. She'd consume spell slots to build her pool and metamagic+arcane fuckery it all into one higher level spell. You'll have to find a way around the maximum pool limitation, or settle for being able to cast TWO explosions per day instead of ONE. Signature Spell can be taken for whatever the closest thing to Explosion is, presumably Fireball.

You're assuming good GMing to design encounters that are tough and interesting and don't kill you.

I dunno if that's a thing you can just... assume.

Even for tougher fights, without artificial HP inflation and with a slightly minmaxed team (of casters, or thugrogues or damage barbarians or whatever), it's very unlikely to go beyond turn 2. I'm not that guy, but the argument of 'schrodinger wizards aren't as good as people think' doesn't actually prove that combat lasts longer. Without hp inflated + low damage enemies, which is boring, very, very boring, the difference between a fight which kills the party and a fight which is hard is typically 'does a turn 3 happen?'. Not that guy, but your argument is.. assumey.
>>
>>53023811
In and most of the games I've played combats were over in 2-3 rounds unless something aberrant was going on or there were an unusual amount of enemies. Such circumstances were exceptions, not the rule.

I'll take the math + the experience of PF fights over 'oh but the GM can compensate for that' which, is actually really hard to do without killing the party, and uncommon, except via the hp-inflation method which is bad.

You wanna say someone's math/methodology is bad, fine. Just do it without saying that fights go for longer than two rounds in PF, cause they overall do not. If that's the case, either the group is unoptimized by PF standards, possibly very, or something weird is going on, or the GM is really good at making these complicated encounters that don't kill the party but also go on for a while.

Maybe I am the GM, and after fairly small amounts of optimization, the 'long fight' monsters will kill the party. So either I have big balls of hp with tiny amounts of damage for the party to whittle down like chunks of wood, or I have credible foes who last 1-2 turns before either the party needs to run or the party has won, or I have credible foes who last longer than that, but they are going to kill the party because anything that can weather the party's attacks for 3+ turns while having an attack that can threaten the party at all, is going to kill them. Or force them to run. PF's math is fairly simple especially with any degree of optimization running over it. Your repeated assertion to the contrary, supported by ad hominem, doesn't actually change that the game is not robust enough to support long fights without a) intentionally unoptimized characters b) boring sacks-of-hp-with-weak-attack monsters who can't threaten the party meaningfully c) artificially extended fights which is really fucking hard to do while making it seem natural and not just 'more enemies arrive'.

And they must have known about it before hand and gotten all adamatine weapons and done huge amounts of damage to kill the golem in a single round with single attacks unelss they happened to start combat in the same square?

It is what it is, either you have a GM that can control or limit it, or you use a better suited system.

You mean Psionics

that one thing that is greatly improved by splatbooks?

Especially the augmented series?

No matter how much /pfg/ might complain about lewd posting and waifu shit, the fact of the matter is that game sperg is always the strongest force around. Problem is that there's hardly enough game to sperg.

It was discussed above. Yeah, she is a gay space communist, but they did make her change and adapt, and the lore drops were nice.

Besides, the important thing I want to read about is YOUR STARFINDER CHARACTER, Anon! What do you want to play as?
>>
>>53025416
Would a no-cost strict upgrade count?
Barbarian Chew is another rage round for a small enough amount of gold you're probably not even tracking it. All you have to do is open up the right companion book and voila, you're a strictly better Barbarian than Core.

That's not game breaking by any stretch of the imagination. 1 extra rage round isn't game breaking by any stretch of the imagination especially when running out of rage rounds as a barbarian is already pretty hard to do.

Wizards aren't broken because of one or two spells. Wizards are powerful because they have so many options available to them. A wizard that chose the wrong spells for the day is a useless wizard. The more books come out the more spells exist, the more options the wizard has to pick out the perfect spell for a situation, there is no one spell even in Core that's perfect or better than everything.
>>
>>53025643
That's what you want, not what will happen! You're going to let them marry with loving wives and happy lives, and you'll be stuck a spinstress.

Seriously, they can't do basic math or even read other people's basic math and think objectively weaker classes are 'overpowered'. It's grognard herpderp 'old stuff is better' thinking at it's worst.

Those are not perfect for situations where you don't have access to 9th level spells.
>>
>>53025951

I think you mean magic missile, the Fonz of sorc/wiz spells.
>>
>>53025159
It could yes. Say, focus on the berserker aspect, kinda like DaiRaiOh's LIOS system: Using it makes you go from rage to uncontrolled psychotic murderfrenzy; knowing when to jump in and pop it versus when hitting the button may get you (or an ally) killed could make for a functional dynamic

By that logic, I could just as easily say "those are not perfect for situations where you don't have access to [insert spell level higher than 1 here]"

Regardless, there's also Haste which is a much lower level spell that will literally never not be useful unless you're specifically not doing combat at all that day, which in DnD is so uncommon outside very specific games that betting on combat happening will always be the safer bet.
>>
>>53025913
Blingmaker isn't a campaign for bittersweet, this is more Greek Comedy than Tragedy. So please, either have your fun and find a nice man, or try and wrangle one with your feminine wiles!
>>
>>53026025
>By that logic, I could just as easily say "those are not perfect for situations where you don't have access to [insert spell level higher than 1 here]"
Yep. As for haste always being useful, it's not always AS useful as another spell you could be casting in that time or with that slot, so I still don't think it qualifies as "best" spell. No spell is. That's not how spells work.
>>
>>53026077
you're an idiot.
>>
>>53026124
Alright, but I'll be an idiot with Fly, Force Anchor, or whatever situational spell I think might be helpful against the boss confrontation with what I know about him at the ready instead of only preparing Haste like a moron.
>>
>>53026077
>>53026172
Hate scales with your party and is ALWAYS a relevant spell for a caster to have. It gets better the more allies there are on the field, it makes full attacks deadlier. Fuck, it even makes retreats easier.

It is not a "do-it-all" spell, it's just at worst a great spell. If all you have prepared is haste, then you're just as retarded as the guy who only prepared fireball.
