Tzeentch Daemons are my least favorite to play against, but even at near-maximum power they're still extremely fluff compliant, compared to most power builds in other factions.

So even when I get massacred, as long the army is nice and painted I feel like I was slain by terrible, otherworldly powers I had no chance against rather than being cheesed to death by some neckbeard with eight wraithknights.

Continuing from last thread. His one Dreadknight survives to kill my Veterans but I was fine with that because he'd be vulnerable to shooting on my turn while his Dreadnought killed my Chimera. But immediately my fucking Vanquisher nuked his other shitty Dreadknight off the board on my turn. All of my reserves came in (he was waiting on a Grandmaster pretty much all game) and they hunted down his Dreadnought and another transport.

It really doesn't hold up. Tau could easily lose control of a world or system or have something big blow up in their face. They have about 100 worlds. That makes losing one a bigger deal than the Imperium, but it's not as though the loss of an entire system would cripple them unless it was 100% totally annihilated with all the worlds destroyed with no hope of reclaiming any resources from them.

Part of the Tau's fluff was how they didn't place a big emphasis on holding key locations, being more likely to retreat and strike later.

Heck, that'd be a great way to deal Tau a loss. Have them actually lose an entire Sept. The Cadre and troops from that Sept now get an identity and motivation as the ones who lost their home and want it back, and you can just write a tiny blurb at the end of the loss about how they're regrouping and gathering forces to try and get back those worlds.

It would be easy, wouldn't remove Tau as a faction, and would help humble them somewhat.

Thing is they're a play on the usual "young up coming human federation" type deal, and those types usually go all over the place despite being only from a tiny starting empire. If you do so you would have to completely rewrite Tau fluff.

The big reason they are as successful as they are is because they have a close and well established logistics network for their systems. If they try sending RT style exploratory fleets beyond the gulf they are going to get curb stomped without the support from the sept worlds and the lattice work of supplies they enjoy in their unusually dense pocket of the galaxy.

Today I threw 92 dice at a land raider as Necrons because it gave me so much grief in the first 2 turns. I got 47 glances and the store manager declared that where Land Raider used to be, Apocalyptic Explosion is taking place. Being imperial never felt so good.

Some friends and I are considering getting into the game by picking up a command and two troops each. I like the Tempestus Scions, while one of my buddies has his eye on Tau; after comparing the troop choices between the two factions, it looks like Tau Strike Teams have the same armor rating, better weapons, and cost less than the Scions, with the only considerable tradeoff being a BS of 1 less.

Are the Tau just better in general? Or have I just chosen a weak faction?

Tau are weaker in close combat compared to Scions, can't get special weapons on their troops, and the AP on Scions guns is better (lower is better if you didn't know)

Tau rifles are more likely to wound the Scions, but have a chance to glance off their armor, while Hotshot lasguns will punch right through Tau carapace.

The key thing about Scions is that they aren't really a full army, and with the new edition it's possible they might not even be a standalone force.

I would recommend looking towards Imperial Guard as a whole and building off of that. You can take Scions as elites, and they could count for troops with Veterans in carapace.

Scions were a mini army that came out to push some model releases. At the time it was easier for them to produce a one off book for them rather than add them to the existing imperial guard/astra militarum, and they were too Jewish to give free formations rules. So mini armybook. And yes, they are objectively worse than Tau because of the lack of choice. Scions are a re-imagining of imperial guard stormtroopers, which were a niche role unit that brought AP3 weapons. If your friend was playing space marines it would be a more interesting setup.

Tau are criminally undercosted in a lot of regions, and benefit from the more efficient game rules.

Nothing wrong with focusing your army around Scions, but things will go more smoothly if you include some of the Tanks and Artillery normal Imperial Guard have access to.

Personally, I would suggest just picking up the Scions and focusing on getting them assembled and painted for now. The new edition is arriving soon, and a lot of this advice might not even apply.

Better to get started on models you like and wait to see what the changes are, then plan around that.

Well, I think Nurgle is out, since Farsight isn't dying, despairing over death, or really stagnating. Slaanesh doesn't fit well either, since he isn't doing this out of greed.

That would leave Tzeentch and Khorne. Tzeentch makes sense from the perspective of hope and change that he has for a brighter rule under the Ethereals, but being the god of magic doesn't really fit well, and also means even more emphasis on tentacles.

I would say Khorne is the obvious choice. He's already wearing red, going into CC, and he's running his enclaves as a sort of military dictatorship. Plus it's the easiest to envision Chaos Tau for, since they can just start using brass weapons/armor that has anti-psyker properties as their main Chaos gift.

To answer your question, you should pick whatever weapon compliments the rest of your army. Heavy bolters for anti light infantry, plasma and grav for anti heavy infantry, multi meltas and lascannons for heavy armor, missiles for a little of everything.

For tactical marines, give them whatever compliments their special weapon. But usually, don't bother with heavy weapons for them unless you plan on just sitting on an objective and plinking.

Also how do challenges work? Like, if I have a Chaplain attached to an Assault Squad, do I want the Chaplain in the Challenge, or the Assault Sergeant?

Which I already pointed out in my original post. Eldar have armor that can be skintight due to being made of magical elf nonsense. They can shape their material into boobplate without losing any effectiveness.

Sisters of Battle armor is designed to look very feminine to make it clear that they're going for 'no men under arms' with the Ecclesiarchy. Again, doesn't lose any effectiveness because it's power armor and can shrug off bullets anyway.

Tau infantry armor isn't like either of those. It's a flat plate of armor that's probably designed to be one-size-fits-all, to fit with the collectivist ideas of Tau. The Tau aren't going to make two different models of armor with boobs and without just so the ladies can show off.

It makes perfect sense for Tau to have a uniform armor design across genders, and that remains true no matter who is right between us.

I dunno, I want to build a Lion's blade with Scouts and maybe Terminators for higher point games, with a Company Master and Interrogator-Chaplain with jump packs attached to the assault squad so they can wreck stuff in melee. I really like Eviscerators, and I want to have a 10 man squad with two and a power sword and combat shield on the sergeant since i heard it's important to have him tank challenges or something like that? I don't get how it works, honestly. But with the Devastators I'm not sure what weapons to give them. Plasma Cannons are really cool, but they seem like they're not worth it. Missile Launchers seem pretty good, but they seem not as good as the other options or something. Lascannons seem pretty strong, and Heavh Bolters are cool too. I wanted to give the tacticals a heavy weapon and a plasma gun because it just seems right, and I think I'd have them in a rhino to rush towards objectives and secure them, so a heavy weapon seemed like a good idea, I think, so they could defend it easier.
