I just got all my paint and first 2 units in and had a question for the base coat.

If you were painting a regular tactical normie marine in Salamanders colors could I use Caliban Green as my base coat instead of Abbaddon Black?
will this make my greens look any better? or will it make the golds for details too hard to paint?
this is first time painting a model so most everything I'm going on is just from youtube shit
>>
>>52600763
Prime the models, if you want a darker green use black primer, white if you want lighter.

I'm betting you're misunderstanding how basecoats work.

For example, your green Salamander marine.
>prime it
>basecoat your main color
>give it a wash, preferably a green one like coelia greenshade, maybe a brown one if you want a darker/dirtier looking armor
>pick out details and highlight your main armor plates

Highlighting you can either do GW style edge highlighting or just highlight where the armor would naturally reflect light and/or shine.

>>
>>52600881

>>
>>52600905
If you find the right shade of green primer and you have a fuckload of dudes it's not a bad idea.

It doesn't look as good as a traditional prime+basecoat, but it's a good way to paint a ton of dudes.

Starting my first army, CSM, and just got my Desolator box and termie lord. Trying to figure out what weapons to give them though, any tips?

Shut the fuck up

>>52600994

You can have 1 special weapon per 5 man units of CSM or 1 special/1 heavy or 2 special for 10 man units.

Generally you don't want heavy weapons on regular CSM with how rules for heavy weapons work (can't accurately move and shoot). It's probably best to use either plasma guns or melta guns.

Sorcerers are really nice, you can pull some neat tricks with them.

You should check the MEGA archives in the OP for the rules. You'll need the main rulebook, the CSM codex, and you'll probably want the Traitor Legions supplement.

8th comes soon so I wouldn't worry about being very efficient with them.

In broad terms it's better to specialize a squad than it is to have generalists. Eg; a heavy bolter and a melta do not really go together because they are opposites as far as roles are concerned.

There are exceptions (if you know you're going to get swamped with low save bodies you could get a flamer/combi flamer to make them eat the overwatch) but in general you'll want to keep like with like.

Reposting one more time.

Have you guys had any fun games lately? Or have you been working on anything?

I'm still working on my army and learning the ropes. I've played 6 games so far and each time it was against a different army so I've been having a lot of fun learning what each army can do. I only remembered to take pictures as the start of the game, but I played 1850 against blue Orks yesterday.

Over all I lost 6 to 5, but it was a close game that we had to call on turn 4 due to him having to go. I think I would have won if we kept going because I was doing some serious damage all game and he only had a few units left, but my biggest mistake was forgetting about Linebreaker. I could have gotten a point and denied him a point as well had I remembered. The 30 man penal legion Conscript blob spent all game fighting a 10 man boy squad. Lots of whiffing on both of our parts and the Priest tanking 4++ re-rolls while simultaneously not hurting the Nob at all. That also cost me a point, but it was a fun combat.

Highlight of the game was my Demo Vets having a massive series of failures. First, I failed to cast Prescience on them, second I failed the ignore cover order, then I rolled all 2's for the Melta Guns and the Demo Charge scattered way off at 7 inches.

To be fair reapers are very reliable and easy to upkeep compared to an asscannon that has to have the entire barrel assembly replaced after each use.

Infernal relics kind of take care of themselves and the contemptors are probably the same guy from the HH stuck in there.

But I whole heartedly agree that chaos needs some cool toys.

Is there actually a difference? I airbrush mine with a solid basecoat without primer. That said it's silver so colour balance is less of an issue.

>>
>>52602475
It strikes at I6 with 8 S10 AP2 attacks. Plus it shits out 12 S10 shots a turn in the shooting phase.

A knight can kill it, but probably won't.
>>
>>52602330
The cost scales of those units are so dramatically different that it's hard to call it a "match up". The Hierophant costs 1000 points.

At range the Heirophant could plausibly shoot the knight to death without that much trouble. In close combat the Heirophant has 8 attacks at I5, so it can do pretty serious damage to it there too.

However it has no way to survive multiple strength D hits, so if it gets hit back it dies.

Basically Heirophants would be pretty okay if D weapons didn't exist and they cost 300 less points, or if they had proper invulns and their own strength D close combat weapons.
>>
>>52602330
The fact that the Hive Fleet can shit out 10 Heirophants for half the resources by the time the Imperium has finished the years of rituals needed to sanctify the Knight Titan.
>>
>>52602512
It also can survive the dreaded roll of a 6 on the d chart
>>
>>52602525
>However it has no way to survive multiple strength D hits, so if it gets hit back it dies
It has 10 wounds which let it soak the 1 or 2 SD hits it'll probably take in this fight easily enough, they usually only do 2 wounds each on average.
>>
>>52602525
Here is hoping 8th does away with strength D weapons and replaces them with something like d6 damage, or forgive me for saying it, d3 mortal wounds.
>>
>>52602330
Ive seen this match up, the bio titan wins in one round of combat 2/3 of the time. The other 1/3, it won in the second round.
>>
>>52602575
How the fuck are blast gonna work.
I'm worried about hitting now, like take battle cannon, the main thing about it is that'd it almost always hit even with scatter Cuz it's a large blasts. What would that translate to for a static hit roll? The army wide bs? Cuz 4+ to hit with a 1 shot weapon sucks ass
Maybe it'll make the vanquisher good again
>>
>>52602525

One round of shooting from its biocannons only does 2 hull points on averagr
>>
>>52602575
>replaces them with something like d6 damage, or forgive me for saying it, d3 mortal wounds.
For the most part it is that already, 2-5 on the "wound" roll is D3 wounds. Its just the 6+D6 wounds for a 6 that needs toning down, either just straight up 3 wounds or only D6 would be fine i reckon.
>>
>>52602616
most likely it will be a single roll to hit, then D3 for small blast, and D6 for large

>>

Probably something akin to roll to hit. If it hits it does 2d6 hits to the unit. I'm just guessing, and this should in no way be considered an educated guess I'm just pulling wild ass guesses here.
>>
>>52602626
Killing a knight in 3 turns is acceptable.
The heirophant is a fast as the knight so can potentially just kite it.

In practice the way to go would be to wait as it comes to you shooting it in the first turn, then in the second turn move forward shoot and charge and you'll reliably kill the knight before it even gets to swing.

If you could fit two droppods for the devs you could run skyhammer if not those assault marines are kind of dead weight
As for chapter tactics you choose one per detachment i think so a cad could have one tactic and a formation could have another

Follow up question about the formation.
I know you can take vanilla marine and BT special characters and not Marines from other full codexes like DA or BA. Can you however run your Marines as other Chapter Approved chapters such as Raptors and Red Hunters or do they have to be generic/BT or bust?

So I have a question /tg/. How to best counter admech when playing as CSM?

I haven't played for almost 2 years, so I'm a bit out of practice. Me and my opponent will be playing a 1500 points game, most likely a combination of kill points and tactical objectives.
I plan on using Traitor Legions Death Guard army, an all-around list with some plague marine squads, bikes, obliterators, autocannon havocs, etc. (MoN on everything).
I'm also using a nurgle sorcerer to fuck a bit with his shooting.

I don't know what my opponent's bringing other than that he's playing mechanicus (wchich I haven't played against before).
I don't want to be overly competetive, but at the same time I don't want to get tabled by turn 4 because I wasn't prepared to deal with a specific unit.

Any advice? Anything to look out for when playing against them? Help will be greatly appreciated.
>>

I just only got them this week, there's no way I could have painted them all even if I was crazy about painting.
Also I'm missing some paints I want to have for painting most of this stuff, and I don't know how I want to paint my infantry.
>>52604143
I mean the havoc squad with four or five missile launcher removed half of my infantry, then the terminators deep striked in front of my tanks and melta'd them and finished them in the assault, and then rolled all their 2+ saves and 5+ feel no pains so what the fuck can you do? They're all T5 or worse so lasguns can't do shit against them.
>>
>>52604109
Best advice I can give is to go in hard and fast. The longer the game goes on, the more time he'll have to use all his +/- BS stuff to it's full effect.

If you can pull off quick assaults, he'll be stuck trying to decide if it's worth giving his other squads super high BS in exchange for making the others helpless in combat.

Maybe so but there's only so much you can spread out while staying in coherency
And 5 blasts that can cover 4 guys still causes 20 hits and most of those are gonna wound
And it doesn't help that literally everything is AP5.
>>
>>52604222
So what, two of the same on a suit, one weapon and two pieces of gear, or just twin-linked?
>>
>>52604171

Should have bubblewrapped your tanks better. Also, next time ally in an ordos xenos inquisitor abd take 3 skull probes. Position the probes carefully and he will have to stay 12" away from the probes when deep striking, which will force them to stay out of charge and melta range from your tanks. Iirc ge us using that obe termie formation in Traitor Legions?

Anyway, you could also set up in a Refused Flank deployment and put all of yoyr army to one corner (remember, Ordinance doesnt care about models in the way!) Which would be safer as it doesnt look like he has any Template or blast weapons besides missiles, and in that case spread your infantry out more or start taking Chimeras to use as road blocks and mobile cover for other tanks.

Hope this helps.

So, thankfully the "new" imperial agents codex isn't replacing the old book, but I gotta ask.

Is it possible to still make the melee Warband squad of the old book, i.e. Deathcults, crusaders and such? I can't make sense of the books version, why on earth would you include a squad of acolytes if you are going for a melee warband with a limited number of transport capacity to fill?

Or have I missed something and the acolytes aren't a must include in that unit?

Acolytes have their place for sure but not in melee.

I tried bubblewrapping them as well as I could but they all melted away. I'm actually hoping to turn my list into a veterans-in-chimeras list once I get enough money and willpower to buy more chimeras.
>>52604338
Yes you need to take a minimum amount of acolytes in a henchmen warband according to IA.
>>
>>52604345

>its okay when I use this one power combo but not when you do it =^)
>>
>>52604323
Today was actually the first game I saw with Tau in 7th edition. He had two riptides. Apparently his opponent (space wolves) only had one unit left by the end of turn 4.
>>
>>52604291
I go two of the same weapon not twinlinked better chances than a single twinlinked weapon
Or you could go full guns and go a twinlinked and a single gun of the same kind
>>
>>52604349

Chimeras will help a lot, both blocking lps and/or giving cover to your main tanks while also keeping those vets alive.

My bedt solution to deep strikers though is inquisitor with skull probes. It will do wonders for your list. Just shove the inquisitor in a chimera squad and let them shoot their conversion beamer from a fire point.

>>
Guys I just thought of something.
In the CSM codex, in the army list section, every CSM/Cult marine unit can take rhino as a dedicated transport.
HOWEVER, it doesn't say a *single* rhino (the number is not specified at least).
Could I, in theory, buy, say, 3 rhinos for a squad, wait for it to blow up, and then just make the squad enter another one?
>>
>>52604447
The guy I play against doesn't have the most unit variety, though I would say the things to focus on would be the Onager dunecrawlers and any Vanguard he has. In my experience, Rangers struggle to do work with their guns, and I could only imagine it'd be worse for them if everything is toughness 5.

>>52604748
I just like stricter army building restrictions.
>>
>>52604774

FoC exists, formations exist. Even AoS requires a set number of Troops equivalents regardless of what formations you take; its arguably MORE restrictive against superfriend shenanigans and going outsude of your army book, because a lot of newer armies have strong incentives to stay pure.

Ignore the anon's scare tactics, Sigmarizing how the FoC and formations wirk would actually balance this a lot more. You wouldn't see any stupid shit like Knights+ Tyranids or Taudar anymore at least.
>>
>>52604774

Too bad.
>>
>>52604774

They still exist, there's just no reason to use them over the more flexible and powerful options with less restrictions. Here's hoping 8E fixes that, because the current armies seeing play is a bunch of retarded circus looking bullshit.
>>
>>52603845
well, you are playing Guard without enough terrain to get cover from against Power-armor which doesnt care about cover against most of your weaponry.

Also you cant expect good rolls without having Dice in the colour of your Army since it is unpainted. In the worst case they have been forever condemned by the Dice-Gods and you will have to buy new ones after painting your army
>>
>>52604850

I like using this as a base, and you can rotate, add, subtract, or move around as you like. As long as the tables are symmetrical, but NOT mirrored, it should be okay. If it's mirrored, this skews one side, for example you put all the buildings on your right, and the opponent puts all the buildings on his left, this leaves the other half of the table completely bare. If you mirror it, you have buildings on your right, he has buildings on his right, it's better for gameplay.

You can also make various shapes with the terrain, as long as you mirror it it should be fine. You can put them in a cross, in an X, in an L shape, etc, you don't need to do one in middle and one in every corner. You can remove your left corner and opponent removes left corner for example.

If the opponent can see 50% or more of your opponent's deployment zone from ANY POINT at ground level in your own deployment zone, the board will be too difficult for melee armies and too good for shooting. If you can see less than 33% of your opponent's deployment zone, this is pretty dense terrain and while still a good play, will handicap shooting armies that use LoS and will provide more advantage for melee armies, and especially jump or jet units.

Depends on how you want to build them and/or what legion you want to go with. If you want them to be shooty, give them a plasma gun, if you want to go with a gunline, give them a heavy bolter, and if you want to go in close in melee or to hurt vehicles and big things, give them a meltagun.

I kind of wanted the guns to be their own separate entity, much like how alot of marine bolters have red casings; They're made from a different material and are less durable than the armour they employ.
The orange after effect on the black armor was purely unintentional but do you think it'd look good to have a bit of rust here and there to break up the pure dark lacquered armor? They are deployed to a swamp so it'd make sense but it also goes against the fluff that instills the "It's been
swabbed.... and wiped. Everything
is clean. Beautiful. So that it
slides perfectly. Nice. Everything cleaned. Oiled. So that your action is beautiful. Smooth, Charlene." mentality

This looks fine for a casual list. It's not too powerful, but that's not what a casual list should be looking for anyways.

There's too many chapter tactics to break down easily in 1 post, but in effect each chapter has their own super special rule. Each detachment must be made out of marines from the same chapter. So Ultramarines go with Ultramarines.

As for what the chapter tactics do, just refer to the codex. For the most part they are very straightforward.

Do you find you typically get 'better' opponents at GW stores or just ant old store? I've not played in a store in over 10 years. I feel like I've gotten older and don't want to deal with "that guy" anymore so typically just play with friends I know. But that gets stale and leads to games being few and far between. I went into my local store on their 40k night just to check it out and it was basically most of the players berating any army that wasn't theirs. There weren't a ton of players, maybe 10 or so, and most were partaking in this. There's a Warhammer store a bit further away, so I'm curious if it's worth checking out instead.

Calth is pretty great. I've gotten 2 because I couldn't pass up the price on either of them. The only thing I don't like it the lack of right arms that aren't bent across the chest. They're only used sgts, so you only get 3 in the box. I might be able to use a left hand if I cut it right, though.

Hey thanks.

>base coated 10 years ago
Yea, that's how my other army is. I'd say 75% of it is painted, maybe a little more, but I just kinda let it go. Now, I have a new and exciting thing.

After I finish this, I'm probably going to work on the 30k side of it, which inevitably bring me up in points anyway. I have a bunch of terminators I want to build, so I will probably swap the spawn for a TAF at some point, which makes for some fluffy Atramentar support. However, I have a daemon Prince, so going to 1500 isn't difficult. That's a Prince and a sorcerer really.

Sounds rough, but definitely possible to overcome next time. Getting a non-turret sounds like a good idea since more options and fun stuff like the Stormlord.

I personally want to at least own both a fixed and turret primary variants (if used) to field both a Stormsword and Baneblade just for that Apoc blast. Fielding them means using both of their 10" and that sounds deeply satisfying.

OK, rumour has it that the next loyalist primarch is going to be Russ. This seems very likely, since Space Wolves are probably either the most popular space marine chapter or the second and they obviously have some rather enthusiastic fans in the design studio.

How are the space wolves going to be tied into the ongoing plot? Now, I've got a kind of out-there theory...

We know that the SW were kind of the Emperor's personal enforcers among the legions and that they have some really weird shit going on with their gene seed. What if they were the first prototypes of his next generation chaos-resistant astartes? What if the wulfen aren't mutant freaks, but actually the intended product with a few flaws?

The emperor was hugely anti-religion, as a way of undermining the chaos gods. Why did he let the fenrisians keep their spirit-worshipping and allow wolf priests and shit in the space wolves? He must have known about them, so we can probably conclude that they really aren't sorcerors who worship warp entities.

Note how the wulfen models have armour which has obviously been designed to fit on their bodies. Who made that? Somewhere, there's a forge world producing wulfen armour.

Also, at the end of Wrath of Magnus, the grey knights and the inquisition both find out about the wulfen and don't do shit. Almost like they have information that these things which look like chaos mutated freaks are actually OK.

I think there's just an outside possibility that the new super-marines that have been rumoured are actually going to be derived from the wulfen.

I only have three heavy bolters, three lascannons and six missile launchers.

It can be useful against plague zombies, heralds and guard/renegade hq's

Yup. The tragedy of our time.
>>52609112
I only have the MLs because the Steel Legion squads come with those.

Two month wait makes sense, I mean, they "leaked" Magnus back in mid-October and we didn't get the Thousand Sons release until December.

This is what Rubric Marines are for, right?

Rubric marines can't carry you.

Back when those models were made regiments had preferred weapons. Autocannons were not a big steel legion weapon..

Infantry on foot are specifically there to catch frag missiles; that means he's not hurling krak missiles at your tanks and glancing them to death. Not much you can do about termicide except spread your points around and not have any big point sinks he can justify sacrificing Terminators to kill. A lot of IG take Pask, which is an obvious "Termicide me for Slay the Warlord."

>tfw WBB/RP operates EXACTLY like FNP
>right down to the older system where power weapons negated it
Actually, I lie, it has some complicated rules for which unit the casualties rejoin
>somehow killing a model and bringing it back makes people far, far more salty than just rolling an additional save

I wonder if there has been discussions at GW and they intentionally kept it distinct from FnP because of the salt and psych-out potential, as well as outright fitting the theme of the army better. 3E Necrons were my first army; Chaos is fun and has more modelling potential, but I really should dig my cranky old fucks out. I don't super love the Egyptian theme but somehow drawfags like lolcron have given the original dudes a kind of "I'm too old for this shit" personality.

What should I fill out the last 94 points of this with?

I could get another centurion, but I think I am good on long range anti-tank.

I could fill out the tac squad so I can combat squad with a sp. weapon.

I'm not sure what would be best, maybe some cheap anti air for ~100 points?

I can fit an honor guard in there for pedro to hang around with if I take out a devastator ablative marine.
