Today was the Inner Circle Warlord brawl at GW here. We had our participants here, and would later be joined by Commisar Yarrick and a Death Company Chaplain. Sammael would be the victor with 6 kills total, followed by the Thousand Son Exalted Sorcerer with 5, then me with the blue captain at 4, though Cawl would have tied me in third place if he hadn't left early.

What's a good load-out for a 5-man skitarii vanguard unit?

I'm thinking just five basic guys with carbines would be OK, but it's tempting to load them up with gear too. Could go vehicle-hunting with arc rifles, arc pistol and arc maul or more general-purpose with phosphor pistol, taser goad and one or two plasma calivers.

After wards I was in a 2v2 Dark Angels and Iron Hands vs Tyranids and Imperial Guard 2k battle. It was called at turn 3 because one of the players needed to go.
We were smashing each other pretty equally but turn one I was alone on the table and took 15 space marines worth of casualties which totaled to well over a quarter of my army.
A plasma devastator squad led by a librarian was totally wiped out by a barebones psychic shriek, except for the librarian
The vanguards got eaten by a dakkafex before they could hurt it
And my rhino not only didn't die for all three turns but was relevant and finished off a chimera with a ram
>>
>>52609419
Interesting choice. I quite like it. Going to have to be careful with the armour though; it would be a bitch to paint over if you slop some black onto your cream. Maybe do the black bits first and then base-coat the cream areas in brown and work up?

I'm almost certain Dark Eldar or the Ordos Xenos would have tooled around with them at some point. Dark Eldar will make Wracks and shit out of anything that moves for their arenas, and the Ordos Xenos aren't smart enough to not fuck around with tyranids, so they've probably tried with Orks.

alas its true (though our superior eldar wraith constructs are better). Id like to work on an almost all dread army imagine a space marine chapter wic was almost wiped out in some disaster. most of the marines wich survived needed to be unturned into dreads and only a very few marines are left. due to the large scale destruction the imperium cannot spare any new recruits and so the chapter is cut off and realize on its massive supply of dreads.
>>

>I would 100% spray and paint the cloaks and torsos separate cause they aren't one bit to begin with.

Actually, I'm pretty sure they are. Or at least two bits which both have part of the robes and part of the armour.

>>52610132
>Khan's coming back to kick his ass right?
White scars are not one of the favoured chapters, so no. You get Russ, Jonson and maybe Dorn and Corax if you're lucky.

>>52610343
>Has any race tried to genetically modify Orks to use for themselves?

Tyranids have. Biovores are derived from orks and in the second edition background squigs were orks that got transformed by tyranids.

>Also have Orks ever gone to war for a reason other than the thrill of fighting, like out of pure rage?

The Beast Arises series implies that the war of the beast was because orks were butthurt about being smashed by the great crusade. I think there's also a bunch of stories where orks are trying to steal stuff.

Also dreads are hard to come by and can't stay active for very long so a chapter of dreads wouldn't be doable unless you had a chapter of techmarines to upkeep them

After getting a leftover dread from a friend I managed to cobble a Red Hunters force from extra bits alone. Can I use such a chapter in Castellans or do they have to be Generic/BT? Adamantium Will shock troops and a 4+ Deny sponge in the Librarian sound pretty cool against Tyranids and such.

It's a matter of genetics. If their DNA is still clearly human, and whatever modifications exist upon it are consistent across generations.

Ogryns, if you looked at their DNA, would resemble human DNA in clear ways, but they've since adapted to far different environments. They aren't aliens, and they aren't mutants, because it's consistent, rather than just sprouting random tentacles.

So as long as that applied, you can get Felenid catgirls or whatever.

There's a specific list of abhumans breeds that are sanctioned. Everything else is considered a mutant.

How you get on the sanctioned list isn't clear, but since there are only a handful on it, it must be pretty difficult. Probably requires some long-term investigation from multiple branches of the imperial bureaucracy.

Essentially, the best-viewed abhumans are the ones that resemble humans the most. Ratlings and Ogryns don't have many weird features, and are really just short and giant humans respectively, aside from their other quirks.

The more consistent and human they are, the less restricted they are, so that's something to keep in mind.

Doing it at all with these fucking paints is too far. I do use a pallete. The water and the paint half the time don't mix at all, like fucking oil and water and the other half the consistency is completely destroyed and it won't go on the model. I would need three or four fucking pots of paint to be able to put 1 droplet of water in without it being too much. It fucking infuriates me that people give this shitty advice. I don't mind it when its with other paints like the vallejo ones where it works fine, but it works dogshit with the GW ones.

Every time I play the local Tau, he complains that my AV14 Russes are too strong and he struggles against them.

I have no idea how to respond to that. It's like it's not good enough that he can wipe my infantry on 2s no armor saves, and fire missiles from out of line of site. And let's not dare mention that I can't even see his suits let alone fight through their stealth saves because they can jetpack into cover. Apparently, having one unit he can't wipe out in one turn with 2 units from halfway across the map is too much.
>>
>>52611145
Nope. Makes absolutely zero sense for that to happen, because they've already brought Slaanesh back to AoS, and Slaaneshi forces have been important actors in both GW releases and BL novels.

It's also too involved in the Eldar story to be axed without outright re-inventing the setting, which GW has already stated they will not being doing.

Stealth Suits? HA! I don't give a damn about the stealth suits. It's that damn Ghostkeel I loath. That "Stealth+Shrouded+effects doubled at ranges greater than 12" is a real pain in the ass!

But its more the "Never give me line of sight" thing combined with the complaints about durability that gets me. If his broadsides are going to drop autocannon-strength shots on me from behind cover, and the riptides, crises suits, and ghostkeels are going to shoot me and then hide behind a chunk of anti-line of sight, then what right does he have to complain when one of my units has the audacity not to die when it has to expose itself just to shoot?

As for the OSC? Nobody uses that because anyone who tries can't get any games.

My advice is 420 blaze it take one (unfortunately thats the most you can take in a 5 man team) because it solves a lot of problems, especially if you can get them close to a space marine squad
Radium Carbines are probably my favorite Skitarii weapon, because if you get lucky you end up with more wounds than shots taken

>>52612244
I'm not sure plasma cannons are too worth it. Their main downside is lacking orders, but the formation >>52612266 posted neatly solves that.

They are basically more mobile heavy weapon teams, at a higher cost. If you just want some autocannons to supplement a gunline, you're probably better off with the HWS. If you want something to advance alongside vehicles and generally hunt towards the side of tanks, then sentinels are much more appealing.

While my gut reaction is 'gross', no one in my group uses any eldar, so it might be interesting. I think I have some dark eldar and maybe a wraithguard squad an ex girlfriend abandoned to me. My group might burn me at this stake for using ynnari though, and I'd probably deserve it.

I still need to come up with a nice primary imperial detachment though. I'm not opposed entirely to making an ultramarine honor guard or something, but unlike Magnus who has several self contained little formations along with him, Guilliman seems to require at least a full demi company of ultras if you don't run him alongside his besties. Too bad he can't just hang with a couple units of custodes.

I'd have shoved him in a CAD with the fists, but chapter tactics rules.
>>
>>52612271
Rubrics are kinda meh for what they do. A lot of their points are tied up in AP 3 and a 4+ invuln save, which gets wasted against a lot of things.

Biggest advice is to not bother with an Icon of Flamer or their special Warp flamer. Soul blaze or a chance to give your enemy Feel no pain isn't helpful.

>>
>>52612363
Yeah. Feel no pain is good because it's in addition to whatever armor/cover/invuln save you take. It's one of the few ways you get to roll twice for that sort of thing.

The rubric flamer is bad because it has a chance to give that to your enemies, or improve it if they have it already. Not worthwhile
>>
>>52612242
Helbrutes look like shit, are shit on the table, and are probably one of the worst models in the game. They're worse than Dreadnoughts in every way, and crazed is easily one of the worst model specific special rules in the game.

Iron hands, they come with it will not die. Their tech-marines also get a boost to repairs. I believe you can take them as elite and heavy support for them. I prefer to have them in drop pods but yeah, you can take up to 18 in a CAD with that, again with IWND and BotO buffs to your techpriests.
>>
>>52612448
You can't take FnP against instant death and D attacks.
>>
>>52612448
Yeah. In general, Flamers are pretty good, but Thousand sons bolters are better than their option for flamers, so it's no huge loss. They're mainly good for ignoring cover anyway, so against marines it's not really something to worry about not having.
>>
>>52612360
They're not going to make a 40k Total War when they haven't even mastered WW1 yet.

We'll get something like "Europe: Total War" or maybe "Republic: Total War" covering the first World War, then once they hammer out the inevitable issues with game mechanics such as non-hovering flight, they'll move on to WWII. But expect the years between the WWI and WWII game to be long as CA will likely choose to go back to their comfort zone of pre-gunpower eras two or three times between Warhammer II, WWI, and WWII. The WWII version will likely include a Korean/Vietnam expansion as well. Then, after all that, they might tackle 40k.

So I estimate the possibility of Total War 40k being somewhere around...2023 at minimum.
>>
>>52612369

Black primer is nice for darker armies like Death Company, Dark Eldar, etc., but it's a bitch painting on top of it.
>>
>>52612839
Because it shows that you don't care about putting in the slightest bit more effort. It isn't hard to prime, basecoat, detail, and wash if you have the slightest knowledge of what you're doing. And it's very easy to get that knowledge unless you're a 12 year old who has never heard of thinning their paints.
>>
>>52612839
If you don't really care what your models look like why spend that much on models whose only worth is to look good? Just use bases with paper cut outs.
>>
>>52612839
Because it's empty, black gamepieces that are difficult to tell apart from each other. Personally I'd much rather play against someone's messy but heartfelt attempt - not attempting to paint your dudes is lazy and contributes nothing to the overall game experience for both players.

If I'm remembering right fire frenzy used to target the closest enemy unit, rather than the one that damaged it. It's the only part of crazed that's gotten worse, rather than better. The other stuff means it never has to buy extra armour if it wants to get into combat.

People don't remember what old rage was like, turning your very expensive troops and dreadnoughts into dogs chasing after empty rhinos.
>>
>>52612839
Different amounts of paint, combined with the army list, can say different things about your player. Exceptions apply, of course, but I find these stereotypes tend to match up with player behavior more often than not.

An unpainted army with a noncompetitive build says "I have just started and I was hoping to get some games in. I'll paint later"

An unpainted competitive army or one using powerful builds says "This army is to me an expensive game of chess and I am only here to beat you"

A poorly painted army with a noncompetitve list says "I am still new and have zero idea what I'm doing" or "I just got these off of Ebay and will be simple greening them tonight after I playtest them"

A poorly painted or primed army with competitive combinations says "Here is my token lipservice to your so-called immersion. Now lets play already."

A well painted noncompetitive army says "I'm here to play, but winning isn't very important to me. Check out my models!"

A well painted competitive army can say "I take this game super seriously, and spend hours of my free time dedicated solely to my models" or "Look, I paid someone to paint my models for me because I really just want to win, but would rather people think I'm part of the latter category."

Like I said though, exceptions apply. But having even a shitty paintjob can color people's perception of you more positively than bare plastic.

Poorly in this case means "below tabletop quality" meaning it looks bad from more than 2' away.

So that means to be better than poor, you need to be painting inside the lines, paints thinned enough not to obscure large details, and 3 or more colors that do not garishly clash with each other.

For cases like this a small detail would be the feathers of the aquila on a guardsman's helmet, and a large detail would be the aquila as a whole.

Anyone can make those prerequisites if their eyes, hands, and coordination are unimpaired.
>>
How about if you don't paint your drones only

>>
>>52613478
Pretty much. In most cases, it shouldn't be hard to find a solid color scheme from the many, many examples and just paint it up neatly.

The biggest thing is faces, but even those I think you could get away with just doing a simple fleshtone and leaving the eyes blank. It looks weird, but not as weird as people who try to go for full detail and end up with monstrosities.

What do you think about this list? I used the ~100 points, minus a devastator marine to put in an honor guard with banner.

This way if anything tries to get close to my gunline, them and pedro can charge for 5 attacks each (4 on pedro).

The other options for the hguard were either an assmarine squad, or an attack bike.

No, actually read the rule. You don't actually have to charge anything anymore.

the only things you're FORCED to do are either;
1: fire frenzy: shooting the unit that glanced you
or
2: blood rage: if out of shooting range, it must run towards the nearest enemy unit

Probably not, unless getting really creative includes scratch-building a bunch of stuff. Seems like a shame to wreck the nice terrain just to make ruins. There are plenty of options for making smashed structures which work out much cheaper. So that's presumably the answer, he updated his armour to fit advancements in armour tech. The real question is why he picked that moment to change his fighting style from dual claws to sword and fist.

AdMech
>>
>>52615571
AdMech. Boths Orks and Nids are bottom of the ladder in terms of tabletop ranking. Admech look awesome, but are hard to paint for beginners. In that regard, nids and orks are much better but you won't have any fun getting your hundreds of painted models just blown off the table. Admech can field relatively few models and have a good chance of winning, but you should be prepared to mess up your first couple of models.

Just remember to THIN YOUR PAINTS

Thanks guys, AdMech are what I was leaning towards since I was aware that they're the most viable of the three right now but also since they're the least swarmy, so less models to paint even if they are more difficult than the other two. FWIW I'm going full fluff and casual, I'm not interested in competitive play at all, but being able to win sure is nice.

In any case for starters I will probably pick up some cheap used muhreens, strip 'em, and use them for practice to get my experience of confidence up before starting my proper army. And when I do my proper army I will paint a single unit, writing down all the steps I did as I go, and if it turns out good then I can repeat it in larger batches.

Noise Marines are the way to go. Blastmasters are not worth the points, just load up on Sonic Blasters and dump wounds on squads. Take your formations for the S5 and Shred for added fuckery
>>
>>52615616
Your shooting a vehicle's rear armor FROM THE FRONT! And the only explanation we get from the formation description is that we only "think" they're right in front of us. Strange, given that the next turn we can shoot that apparition and it somehow takes damage all the same. At the same time, you completely ruin vehicle armies, whose whole point is using positions and angling to maximize their apparent toughness. "Oh, you cleverly positioned that Leman Russ so that the only way I can get to the rear armor is to deep strike into the middle of a guardsman horde? Well fuck you, I'm going to kill it from the front with strength 6 weaponry using a unit that has a 2+ cover save in the open against anything further than a foot away. I mean, who want's to use cover, or positioning, or strategy when I can park my ass wherever I want and still hit you from behind?
>>
>>52615871

Honestly "lol I'm actually behind you because holograms!" Is more a harlequin trick than a tau trick.

OSC should instead grant the Ghostkeels infiltrate and the stealth suits move through cover. More fluffy, and a nice tactical benefit without being crazy broke.
>>
>>52615616
Fluffy would be taking a Ghostkeel and Stealth Suits without that formation. The rules are cheese, and everyone knows it.

>>52615616
Three Broadsides is not spam. Nine is spam. I take the RSC so that my Pathfinders don't die on the first turn, making them useful. They will still die hard to flamers. I also take the RSC so that I can use three separate units of Broadsides while leaving my HS slots open for my Hammerheads.
>>
>>52615912
I would accept this.
>>
>>52615571

Admech are OK in terms of power level (difficult to judge how they will be in the future, but probably at least somewhat good). Many of their units are tricky to assemble (lots of tiny pieces which have to go on exactly the right way on exactly the right figure and can easily snap off). Moderate in terms of painting (mostly because cloth can be a bit difficult; everything else is just drybrush and wash unless you want to do fancy lighting effects). They can also ally with many other forces.

Orks are shit in terms of power level (and almost guaranteed to stay shit), easy to assemble (and offer many opportunities for relatively simple conversion if you like), difficult to paint (lots of little details, changing from metal, to cloth, to flesh, to leather over a small area).

Tyranids are shit in terms of power level (but might get better in the future, as they have been OK in the past), fairly easy to assemble and easy to paint (base colour, wash, basically).

Yeah because it's so god damn difficult to keep your tank 18 inches away from the anti tank division. Talk about tactics, it's not like anything in the OSC has any kind of range. Most tanks could cozily chill like 60" away and hammer down fire, and if the ghostkeel deepstrikes in it's now in the middle of your entire army. Pretty easy to assault and kill at this point.

Ghostkeels can deep-strike and so can Stealth Suits.

If you did deploy on the front line, that 18" comes into effect on turn 2 after your 6" move. Vindicators need to close to 24" to use their cannon (exposing them to a rear armour shot from the ghostkeel next turn). Any walker is fucked. Commander Pask with his 24" punisher cannon is fucked. Just about the only things it doesn't affect are Landraiders and Monoliths. It's a fucked formation.

You'll have other units with burst cannons and the like to suppress and supporting fire any infantry screen I try to set up. And that's assuming you don't just outfit one of the stealth teams with an AI loadout to clear the area in front of the ghostkeel.

Keep in mind, you don't NEED a fucking fusion blaster in an OSC. Rear armor for most vehicles is 10-11. You'll glance us down with Cyclic Ion Weapons from 24" range.

You're crying about him wasting broadside missiles on your guardsmen? Boo hoo that's what they are there for.
Hell if you're saying he was shooting from behind cover then he wasn't even getting to shoot his HYMP.
>>
>>52616049
They cost so much though...
>>
>>52616223
right I forgot it's the same reason everyone runs deepstriking termis with cyclone launchers because 2+ saves and hitting back armor are so op
Oh wait
>>
>>52616297
Cover saves can't be ignored with AP, and Terminators actually have to get behind the vehicle, rather than just pop up in front and shoot like they're behind it.

If I had a guard blob behind my russ so you couldn't DS your ghostkeel behind it, you could just DS in front and take it out.

I can't attest to it, I guess you'll find out if you read the Marine codex.
Also I've heard it's not competitive at all to run a fluffy Black Templars list.

I don't seem to understand this Castellans of the Imperium. Why would you ever want to take anything BUT the better Space Marine units? Guardsmen and Sisters are both shit I don't see the point of giving you the option when I'm just going to take Land Raiders and Grav Cents anyway.

>>
>>52616780>>52616839
Even from the WAAC spam angle, you could take cheap Melts Scion troops that constantly respawn.

I mean, if the common wisdom is that tacticals are 'shit' outside of gladius, then why not take a formation to avoid them entirely?

>>
>>52616873
I mean yeah, having a close, exciting game where there's a chance you might win or lose is fun.

Better than just curbstomping and tabling your opponent by turn 3.

Are we really all going to ignore how fucking terrible these are? It looks like he used unthinned pastels from Wal-Mart. Please never post these again unless you get somebody else to paint them. Holy fucking shit.

They look fine. He actually got the facial features right. Not only that, but the guy spamming them isn't even the guy who owns them.
>>
>>52616881
Oh so you're just a cuck then? Why even think about spending all this time and money to gimp yourself. I'd play Eldar but I want to actually get games so I stick to Grav.

I actually like most of Red Guard Guys stuff. Him and Grey Guard Guy at least represent some IG in here.

I find interesting how Skitarii and Admech do not use bolters at all, not even as special equipment.

How's that? I thought every branch of the imperium used it.
>>
>>52617226
iirc the AdMech aren't considered as part of the Imperium officially, they're basically just best buds

Oh, I'n not actually interested in making an army, I just felt curious about this topic

For Death Guard, is it worth putting a single heavy weapon in CSM squads as they can move and fire, or is it a waste due to difering target priorities? Figured a missile launcher or autocannon could maybe be useful, but it seems better to just run when out of 24'' range and within that plasma is a better S7 weapon anyway due to its AP (and DG can handle gets hot pretty good with the additional defense of FnP).

Heavy weapons are cooler though. When else are you gonna have an excuse to have a marine walking around hip-firing a heavy bolter.

How much more gun? And do warpflamers work in their place? Because i've heard flamers are better for killing Culexus because of their weird "causes all attacks against him to roll at BS or WS 1" thing.
