We were in an inn resting after a day's worth of adventuring. Throughout the whole trip they continuously made quips at each other. The human rogue apparently had a fetish for dwarfs.

So after some consideration they decided that they'd get a room together and play out their fantasy.

The DM expected lovemaking, some romantic words and awkward comedy that ensued from that.

He didn't expect that the rogue would start fingerfucking the dwarf before anyone on the table had a chance to leave the room.
>>
>>52590141
>How do you keep your paladins from playing lawful stupid?
Uh, I've never had this issue?
The only paladins I've played with were either not really zealous at all, clearly playing it up for the power, or good guys, but brusque and at times offputting to deal with.
I play super nice guy paladins that have defined lines that lead to shitslapping, but always try to defuse the situation first.
The forces of darkness, however, get no such reprieve.

My play group lost a few people and we're down to just three of us; myself the DM and two players. We decided to start a new campaign focusing on Waterdeep, and since there are only two players I decided to let them have some extra stuff to make it more interesting. One of them owns a small cargo ship while the other owns a theater house.

This was a terrible idea. They are both entirely consumed in their own businesses and spend like 80% of their time apart from each other. The way our sessions have been going, I'll talk with one of them for 20 minutes about how their business is doing and what the character wants to do for the day, then spend another 20 minutes doing the same with the other player. Then this just goes back and forth for our 5 hour session.

The only time their characters are ever together is when I do some ridiculous ass-pull that forces them together. "Oh the magic sea compass you want is inside a cave..... that happens to be underneath the theater house." But of course that alone isn't enough to entice the theater-owner, he won't help, so I also have to add that there is also a demonic summoning circle in that cave which is threatening his theater house.

Then they'll kind of work together for one dungeon and at the end just flat out go "Okay thanks for the help, bye." And their characters go back to their own thing. I'm not sure what to do aside from just causing some catastrophe to take the business from one of them.
>>
>>52591424

An AD&D demilich is just an invincible wraith, or sometimes just a mad dust bunny. To get the effect of the AD&D demilich, put a fucking CR 5 wraith in your ebin dungeon and see if the PCs spent 50 fruitless attacks striking it pointlessly.

If the argument is "but energy drain is killer in AD&D! ebin xD" sure, but a regular wraith is much better, as they can actually make 101 wraith spawns in AD&D. If the argument is "what if they touch it?" how do you progress that far in a dungeon where touching anything instantly kills you?

Toll the dead is fine cause it's the same damage as poison spray, a damage type that can easily be resisted depending on campaign, and saves for nothing.

The other cantrips do less damage cause they have bonuses, firebolt is easier to hit cause you just need to beat AC, Ray or frost is same but adds slow, acid splash can hit multiple people doubles the damage.

never been a factor for me when I've DMed, Screen is also good if you need a quick reminder on how a rule works.

Also it is a great way to block your notes/maps that you don't want your players to see.

In all honesty since we stopped playing 5E and started playing a frankensteined version of it I haven't had to use a screen, when I run a more traditional game for my kids I use a screen since A. they love the art on it and B. I can fudge rolls/hide maps as stated above.
>>
>>52592458
Eh, it's just a minor "trap". The mage was just very very damaged already to die form 1d4 damage.

I mean sure, if you converted it to 5e, you'd be better off treating it like a patch of grease, like the spell.
>>
>>52592478
How is fudging rolls to keep things fun/keeping players engaged "hating fun"?

Not saying you ALWAYS need to fudge rolls but sometimes keeping your group from exploding or keeping the game exciting or the action/fiction flowing you are going to need to fudge things once in awhile.

Some gaming systems don't need that fudge since sometimes fucking up IS the fun ( looking at you Dungeon World) but games that have coded crunch like D&D and Pathfinder you might need to fudge a roll here or there either way to keep the game interesting and keep your players from checking out due to "just a bad roll".
>>
>>52592708
>>52592720

I hope it will be. The basic premise for the BoVD in the campaign setting is this

>Cyric, Prince of Lies, wants the entire material plane and eventually the entire universe to devolve into chaos
>he gets his hands on the BoVD and flings it to an unwitting halfling to expand his influence
>from there, Cyric hopes the halfling or get someone more capable to work on his behalf

The rules are in place because that's the only way a party can ever get challenged. The game already has a player bias, the average level 1 character is stronger than a lot of shit that would completely demolish the average peasant. They have access to online resources and the player handbook that allows them to understand the rules of the world and how items, spells and equipment work. So if you fudge a roll you are basically adding another layer on top of the shitpile of advantages players get.

Megaanon here.

I can no longer host the Mega trove. Effective immediately, I am removing all links to my shared troves and washing my hands of my role in /5eg/ (and other places) as a serial file sharer.

This is done for the sake of my players and my own future playing experiences.

To those who shared files with me via email: I will not be uploading that content. I appreciate your offers but I can no longer serve this role to this community.

Furthermore, I will be taking down the Github troves for my Roll20 script and 5etools itself. Due to its similar infringing nature, I cannot continue to develop that.

Many of you will likely not understand why I am doing this or agree with it even if you did, but in the end this is what's best for me.

A lot of them are pretty useless or uninspired really.

The only Ceremony that's awesome is Investiture. Chaos Bolt has a great concept but meh execution (but a move in the right direction: more flavorful sorcerer-only spells). Zephyr Strike is interesting (for the same reasons, but with rangers).

Puppet is okay, but for some reason only applies to humanoids.

As often with UA, there are some good ideas but it simply needs more work. And sometimes "more" is "a shitload".

How exactly do people DM with no battle mat? or visual assistance?

I don't understand how you can have combat encounters with no battle mat or some type of representation to keep people aware of where they are and what not...

One of my older friends was telling me that back in the day, people just used words for combat encounters in DnD.

How the fuck...? How do you know who that fireball will and won't hit?

I am asking because I have to DM a game soon and its in real life instead of online. Usually online I can use some type of application. IN real life.. what the fuck would I use?

So the Detect/Protect/ ect. Evil spells are all about Fey/Undead/Abberation and not about actual alingment and the Paladin Smite is a flat damage boost. Does that mean I can remove alignments from my game without worrying about shitting on the Paladin or making the Paladin OP then?

You just ask your DM if you can do that, reasonably. "Can I hit this guy with my lance or is he too far away at the moment?"

In any encounter with any degree of complexity that can get very hard very fast, doubly so if the group isn't on the same page in terms of relaying and retaining information.

It's especially true in games like D&D, where the rules as presented do care about specific positioning and distance. Five people mentally maintaining the (probably frequently changing) distances between their five PCs, plus enemies, plus relevant scenery elements, can all get overwhelming very quickly if the location is anything more complex than a hallway.
>>

Also I find that not having a visual aid usually results in distances getting really floaty, either you're always in range to do basically everything or you're out of range way more often than you think you probably should be, because the DM's headspace usually errs in one direction or another and any error in either relaying or interpreting the information can exacerbate this.

When I first started playing my DM had some guy run into the tavern we were at just shouting how there was a hydra in his warehouse. No clue how it got there and we never figured out how and why but it was funny. Thank you for reminding me.

As for an idea, hydras have a swim speed and are at least somewhat aquatic. Could do something like boats have gotten attack in a river and the few survivors saw something reptilian with a long neck attack the ships and eat the crew. So your group might think Plesiosaurus but it's actually a Hydra that keeps its other heads underwater. If the head that the players can see dies then out comes another one.

Any guides for someone almost completely new to D&D? I've played a few games with my friends in highschool, but that was second edition and the only people we played with was ourselves, so I'm not too sure if our style will mesh too well. I've heard that online is a good option, which I would be open to. Would my best bet just be to go buy the latest player book and then try and find a skype group around here?

Recently he began to include Roll20 assets in the MEGA, as well as on other sites. For the life of me I don't understand why he even bothered. After hitting the MEGA a few times and taking it down, I asked him to remove the items in this thread multiple times. He got upset and refused, for some reason. So we took it to the next level. If he'd just removed them we'd never have bothered with all this. If he'd removed all Roll20 assets from various sites under his control, your MEGA would be up now. But those are our assets and we're not allowing people to host them in violation of US law.

By having their actions have consequences. Seeing as how the paladin is a symbol of their god's will the people seeing a paladin acting in ways incongruous to the teachings of their deity could cause no shortage of problems like cults claiming to be following a deity's will due to the leader seeing the paladin do bad a time or two.

Well normally, the hits against the MEGA are enough. It says that Roll20 was the origin of the complaint. To a normal human being, that means: Remove the Roll20 stuff, reupload, go on with my life. A formal communication is something that takes a complaint to the "next-step" so I tried to tell him in the thread. It didn't work, he refused, so we went ahead and took it tot the "next-step", which I'd hope to avoid.

How would you play a card-based caster without homebrew?

I have been thinking about this for a while and then saw a class specifically for it on the "touch of class" kickstarter thing.

I've been thinking about it and am stuck between a wild-magic sorcerer and a warlock.

WMS would certainly be able to produce the "random" effects quite well. But warlock seems to fit the fluff of magic cards being backed by some otherworldly power.

Action economy is a big deal. The action you spend on fireball could be EB for 17-21 damage, so you're only gaining ~9 damage. Plus the 20' radius, which is the big deal and why fireball is good but it's not on the general warlock spell list.

If you just want to kill one dude, hex is good if you aren't getting hurt. AoA if you are getting hurt in melee. HR if you're getting hurt not in melee.

How do I get better at talking to NPCs? I always run out of shit to say or can't come up with shit to say that would give good information.

Are you getting lost in your words trying to do a character voice or using some kind of dialect? If so, try to get away with just speaking normally. Hopefully your group doesn't give a shit.
Are you unclear on your goals at any given time, and you're stuck trying to think of lines with only half the information? Take a moment out of character to discuss with your group what exactly the plan is before you go into action. It may also help your DM or other players realize they're not being clear when they give you goals and instructions, and there may also be other players who would benefit from having brief recaps.
Do you have anxiety? When you're put on the spot does everything else just exit your head and you flounder? Talk with your DM, see if it's OK if you just summarize out of character what you're trying to do, and if your DM can work with just that. Maybe you'll get used to saying things in character, or else maybe another player will step forward as the face.
