Let's talk about the highlord. There's some misconceptions here, and I'd like to go through it point-by-point.

>Highlord vs tactician

The tactician, as a class, has problems. We all know it; it's got design issues that are difficult to solve with just archetypes, and it's widely-considered to be the most boring psionic class. We plan on giving it the attention it needs at a later date. The /role/ it fills, "telepathy leaderguy," isn't really a niche it /owns/, though.

I wouldn't say that the Highlord is "we're trying tactician again;" speaking as the person who brought the author and class concept onboard in the first place, it was never, at any point in its development, meant as a replacement for or a knockoff of the tactician. The whole reason it's its own class, instead of an archetype, is that its concept and implementation are rather /different/ from the tactician—it's a debuffing, mind-controlling gish who fights alongside their allies, or a leader who orders their allies around while enhancing their stuff against particular targets, instead of a more general buffing class.

The initial seed of the highlord class' idea was based on some Starcraft concepts, and the name is a reference to that. The class itself, though, is far more than that, and takes inspiration from a large variety of psychic individuals in fiction, from stuff like Star Wars, to comics, movies, and TV shows, and, yes, Starcraft, as well as looking at other games and their mechanics. The goal was a class that delivers on the fantasy of crushing the minds of enemies and/or more /directly/ guiding allies in fights, without dipping into the mechanical messiness of save-or-lose dominate effects. Personally, I'd like to think that the author succeeded.

Well, we do think that at this point, it's in a playtestable state. That's the reason we posted it up, after all. Thing is, the highlord was written over the course of 4-5 months of time, with numerous revisions and retunings, as we found issues or had better ideas. This is not "deimosaur submitted a Starcraft homebrew and DSP is publishing it;" DSP has been involved with the creation of this class at nearly every step of the way. The idea was pitched to us with a skeleton and concept, and then grew, was tested, revised, and rewritten until we hit a point where we felt it was ready to go.

I probably didn't describe it well enough. Honestly, I'd take a skim through the class. The big thing is that most of the class' mechanics function similarly for allies and enemies; your ally-buffing class features play a dual-role as enemy debuffs.

For example, there's an ability that lets you will someone to move. If that's an ally, that means you're gonna move them into position. If that's an enemy, that means you're going to move them /out/ of position (if they fail the save).

Having given it a look over, Highlord looks... honestly boring as fuck.

It's got nothing that jumps out at me as 'cool'. Just mechanically predicated abilities. A whole bunch of nothing but NUMBERS, shared over a hivemind that only serves to convey NUMBERS.

And does it want to have its friends in the collective, or its enemies? I would actually be pissed off if a character using this class was in my party since he'd be dicking us over and buffing the enemies too.

Actually I will speak to this. When I ask to use the Unshackled Martials material is is partially because of this. Unfortunately quite a while ago I was going to run a playtest for the Unshackled Martials, but ended up not being able to for a few reasons one was lack of interest due to it being fairly mundane in character creation rules to test compatibility, another was because of my poor health.

When I ask to play I will be testing things out. For the most part I do not believe anything in there will cause issue, but of course just like with any material there are things in it that can have unforeseen consequences and interactions.

However I'm super willing to work with GMs on it this and change things if they think it's messed up.

I don't want to make a ton of extra work for GMs and believe for the most part my work is inoffensive from a game standpoint.

However I completely understand people not wanting to touch playtest material especially when the creator is trying to hammer out details through play.
