Asking again

The devs keep pumping out terrible splats like Argonauts instead of giving people what would actually help them run Eclipse Phase - more modules

What is your favorite Scenario, /epg/? Official or fanmade.

Just had a quick sweep of "The Devotees", only Scenario I've got, and Holy Fucking Shit.
I can see how the Devs are apprehensive about releasing new modules if they all require as much works as that.
Locations.
Characters.
The local Mesh.
A cohesive Plot.
And not to mention they have to accommodate quite a few ways in which the plot can go if they don't want to be railroading bastards.
>>
>>52346472

Most of them are like that. Multiple steps of investigation, locations with maps, NPCs, backstory for the GM - optional plot elements. I think they spend a few years playtesting some of them at cons before publishing.
>>
>>52346512
>I think they spend a few years playtesting some of them at cons before publishing.
Well, there's the reason why they don't publish Modules much.

Makes me wonder if /tg/ could even attempt a module of their own? Probably not. A single person making a small room with character? Sure. But an entire module spread across several people? Nope.
>>
>>52346699

There's several fan-made scenarios in the OP - though I don't know how many of them add maps at least.

I don't buy this for a second.

Delta Green and Shadowrun, two similar games, have tons of modules, and more coming out every month. All with locations, characters, internet connections, a cohesive plot and multiple ways to complete them.

A more likely explanation is that the Eclipse Phase devs seem to have trouble finishing anything. Support for Singularity, the character generation software, was quietly dropped after release, without bug fixes or updates for content in the latest splats. Argonauts was months behind schedule and apparently had to be rewritten from scratch, and the end result still amounted to a pamphlet with very little content.

It may have something to do with the small size of the team and the way they hire freelancers for almost everything. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of Catalyst Games style nonpayment of employees/writers going on behind the scenes that we didn't know about.

I had an idea for an eclipse phase campaign.
Basically Firewall decides to try out a second form of "dedicated" cell/team structure other than erasure squads: Forced Entry And Recovery teams.

All the players would be told ahead of time the focus of the game would be heists and stealthy intrustion stuff, and the missions would revolve around stealing or destroying weird bullshit in secure locations, sometimes also acting as recovery teams to grab evidence of other firewall operations.
Thoughts?
>>
>>52362590

That could be interesting and sensible. The Firewall field doctrine is "Study, Contain, Destroy". There would definitely be servers and cells devoted to those three things in a proactive sense.

Normally I don't know if Sentinels would need a fancy name for that sort of thing, but if you're campaign thesis is that this is kind of a pilot program for dedicated operations then that's fine.
>>
>>52362622
Well, when I started thinking about it the main targets for these heists that came to mind would be stuff like private collections of oligarchs, scum swarms playing with stupid bullshit, naive argonauts, etc. etc.
>>
>>52362656

Oh man, I can just feel the political bullshit for that sort of situation too. Like you're talking with the Medeans or ISET or something, and they're like "Yeah, so, for internal reasons we can't just go bust this guy because that'd be a whole thing - but if you could knock over and black bag his lab we will look the other way" and shit like that.
>>
>>52348078
Makes sense. I know I have issues with finishing projects, especially big ones.
/EPG/, could we make random tables for each set of details? The planet, the hab, the local government, the local mesh, the basic plot and major players?
Because I think we can. After work.
>>
>>52350737
>>52350795
Do not ever mix them up.
On the other hand, I once built a snek biomorph, so eh. Could've been penguins.
>>
>>52362724
Yeah, the team would be saved for situations where there's no other way to get at something/someone, but the problem doesn't justify the use of an erasure squad.
"The president of this hab has some fractal goo shit in a bottle in his room, get it before something stupid happens."
>>
>>52362590
I would play that game.

BLG-092L b is newly discovered and classified exoplanet reachable by Martian Pandora Gate.
The planet itself is terrestrial with toxic atmosphere. However the Gate itself is located within a 10 square mile habitable dome inhabited by what seems to be a crude copies more or less resembling humans ignorant of Gatecrashers.
Closer examination revealed that this is a replica of 20th century Icelandic television show. Why TITAN's would do this and for what purpose is unknown. Extreme caution is advised as two teams who stayed there for a night have vanished. Planet is currently under quarantine.

Like, a Splicer is rid of genetic errors and defects, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't limited by the "normal" of the human system. The Remade is all the best, most efficient and effective genes of the human with the weaknesses all removed or worked around.

Thanks. I figure I could use a GMEmulator with one of the modules. Maybe roll a d100 for the probability of a traitor in the group and things like that.

If I get desperate I could probably just refluff the solo play tables in scarlet heroes.
>>
>>52362736
Let's do this. Here's my proposal for a habitat location table. The probabilities are a rough approximation of population distributions plus my lazy guesswork. Feel free to suggest any adjustments you find appropriate.

Roll d100 for an all caps location, then roll d100 on the location sub-table(entries below what you got with a dash), then maybe roll d100 again(greentext entries below whatever you got on the second roll).

Fuck me, I got Saturn all fucky. Obviously 02-14 on its subtable should read " Orbital, Trojans or other Lagrange point", and 65-99 on Titan should just read "Orbital". Shitty copypasting skills.

Also, as a quick followup, here's a pair of habitat type table. Roll on them appropriately to what you got from the first two-three rolls(ignore this if you've already got the habitat type from the previous table).

Space habitat type table:

25-59 Cluster
60-69 Cole Bubble
70 Hamilton Cylinder
71-84 O'Neill Cylinder

Is a campaign where you play Jovian Special Forces Squad aimed at operations behind enemy transhuman lines in Outer Planets interesting ?
>>
>>52381362
The problem with this is that compared to OA, transhumanists and Jovians aren't that far apart in terms of ability, in fact Jovians are often better trained and have better skilled, have better tech and their elites don't shy away from enhancing soldiers, intelligence or scientists when it serves the purpose of protecting their state and population.

Jovians vs Transhumas is not a decided match, in fact one could argue that Jovians are actually better adapted to post-Fall situation.

>That and people forgetting that the republic is all about transhumanism if you're part of the elite.
Not really, they do not seek enhancements for itself, but to protect humanity.
In fact in view that most transhumans might become TITAN flesh puppets, in the long run(millenia or so) the survivors could be post-human Jovian shepherds protecting pure human population who they view as their flock.

To put the dog down, I work for them at conventions and I've never had any trouble being paid well and promptly by Posthuman Studios. I've also never heard of any problems from freelancers, and I'm friends with many of them. Don't forget that multiple principle members of Posthuman left Catalyst while that stuff was coming to light.

Their slow release schedule is partially because their standards are so high when it comes to modules, partially because they playtest extensively, but mostly because the principle members have primary jobs. Also, with such a varied setting they want play groups to develop their own forms of play and content to focus on.
>>

Any insight on why Argonauts took like two years and several sets of writers before one of the core PS guys had to sit down and write it himself or is that going to be one of the great "the world may never know"s?
>>
>>52401007
Yeah, no clue. I assume it was put on the back burner because the content wasn't there, then they rushed it because it was years since they promised it would be released.

They usually create where they have good content, which is why I think the Kickstarter was a mistake. While I like Argonauts because I like dry writing, I think most people agree that the content still isn't great in what was released.
>>
>>52400913
>Also, with such a varied setting they want play groups to develop their own forms of play and content to focus on.

"We want the players to do it themselves" is a great way to ensure it never gets done, which in this case means the game never gets played. The setting and complexity of Eclipse Phase are enormous barriers to entry for people new to the system, and the dearth of published material on actually running the game, nevermind the "plot hooks" or "adventure seeds" that every splat has in abundance, only compounds that.

It's +10 and -30. Chump change even by itself. In melee they apply simultaneously, which makes it a -20, which can be reduced even further by (dirt cheap) laser sights, quick action aiming or autofire. In the last case it evens out with additional dice due to higher MoS possibility. Hell, nothing even forbids you from just stepping away and shooting.

The penalties from shooting into melee are exactly cancelled out by the stack of bonuses the firer gets
>Firing into melee -30
>Smartlink +10
>Point Blank +10
>Quick Action to Aim +10

The shooter gets two attacks (two single shots or two bursts) for every one the melee attacker gets

The shooter's attacks are half as likely to be dodged (half fray) as the melee attacker's (full fray)
>>
>>52407678
So basically, you're just confirming the meme of how hopelessly under powered melee is

Anyone else miffed by the weapons rules in the core book? I find it hard to believe that with crazy future space tech, caseless ammo and small nanofabricators that we haven't managed to cram more than 30 rounds into an assault rifle, or more than 50 into what's supposed to be a SAW.
>>
>>52408575
It's not a meme. It's hopelessly underpowered.
>>
>>52407678
>>52406437

The game doesn't really comment on it, so here's a logical question for you.

Do you actually get both the penalty for being in a melee and the point blank bonus? Because, for example, you don't apply both the penalty for low-light and being blind. If you're in a situation where somebody is up inside your firing, where it's so hard to bring your weapon to bear on them, why would you also get the bonus to hit them because they're close? The whole point of the penalty is that they're too close for you to put your gun on because they're trying to slap you.
>>
>>52411765
Yeah, you kind of have to use your brain and realize that point blank is for, like, having a gun to someone's head, or otherwise having the drop on them, not for someone being actively in your face with a vibro-knife or whatever.

>>52409115

AUGC is for you, my friend.

Given that Pleasure Pods can tweak their sex(ual characters)-shifting to be "both" and "neuter" along with either end of the proverbial pole, one would think they'd have an advantage in producing a body that looks pretty much entirely female, but lacks breasts and has male jibblies without too much trouble.

So I'd say advantage: PP.

Of course, custom modified morphs can have an edge if you spend enough time and money growing them, in theory, too. It's just that almost any PP that's so inclined could probably do a pretty damn good job of "trapping" (reverse or otherwise).

>Bot Jammer
Seems like you wanted to get physical, but one body wasn't enough for you. So you turned to Jamming. You learnt how to control several bots at once, and the ensuing data storm that comes with it, then you went pro.
It started out simple. You piloted 3 humanoid bots and set a challenge for anyone to defeat your team in a 3v3 battle. You made a decent amount of change from the entry fee, built some rep from the Meshcasts, and your parents overlooked this as an adventure of youth.

And then someone took a look at what you were doing, said to themselves that they could do this bigger and better than you, and then did it.

You were swept away by a bigger, more bombastic competition that really spun the idea of Jammers v. Jammers. That way the battles could get really vicious. Really played into and encouraged that bloodlust people had but no idea what to do with.
On that day you got a better idea of how the little people viewed the bigger people. You also made some friends with the little people.

In the end you turned to Jamming for pay. Maybe to explore the Habitats springing up? Maybe to tinker with Bots and learn how to lose yourself in the metal whilst living in the meat? Either way you did what you did. And what you did was travel and Jam.

You succeeded and you failed. You learnt and you beat against the iron wall. You were security for up-coming debutantes who wanted to inflate their own importance, you were the hands that built, and the hands that held back the rioting masses of humanity. Your entourage was built up and modified and lost and borrowed and repaired and so many other things.

Until that day you left them all behind to stop the beanstalk car being overloaded with the screaming, crying meat of humanity.

...

But let's talk about happier days. Give me 1d100 to see what the most memorable event of your adult life was. Prior to the Earth being blackened, of course.

So many ways you could have lived. But you died.
A ego-driven smart rocket hit the hab where you were jamming your bots from.
Your body was lost, your stack recovered, and you were resleeved as a Ruster. Gratis from the Hypercorp for giving your life in the path of duty.
You had to work for two decades for those bastards before you could afford the genehacks to remove the obsolescence processes they built the morph with.
You left with a hatred of Mars, a hatred for Mars Hypercorps, a little bit of knowledge of how life was like for Rusters, a Mars-born body that could actually leave Mars (which sometimes raises the ire of those who could not), and the bots the Hypercorp loaned to you (stripped of Hard and Software, no chances taken).

A Jovian Soldier is pinnacle of human combat.
Even core books admit that a pair of Minervan operatives can easily infiltrate and destroy transhuman habitats due to their immense skill and unmatched combat experience.

As Jovian Republic is on constant war footing, we can estimate their soldier population in active duty to be around 20 % percent, making it 8 million best soldiers in the Solar system with probable 10-15 million in reserve.

The robot piloting skills you developed over the decades should have done something to protect those you loved and cherished. But it did nothing. Nothing at all.
Dozens upon Dozens of bots were thrown at the TITANS, some were your own stock, others you hijacked from less-deserving people. You pick up a gun and fire at head-harvesters, they escape. A dozen bots are programmed to escort your father, they are hijacked and drag him away. You code a databurst into every bot you control, commanding them to charge the enemy and die in a burst of fire, and when you turn back, the people you met all those years ago when BotFight got started, your friends, are dead in so many ways.

>>52417647

Eh, the Ultimates being able to capture all the Pandora gates is halfway almost possible, because the nature of the Pandora gates is that they are the mother of all chokepoints. Ultimates can sit on the other side and pew-pew anyone who tries to come across. With that sort of defender advantage it barely matters how good your scoldiers are. You could be using barely trained Nigerian child soldiers and still have a fair shot at holding it. That the Ultimates are good soldiers makes it more scary a prospect.

Actually getting them all in the first place to reach that point would be incredibly difficult, but its still possible given that they already get paid to guard a few. And if they did manage it, freeing the Pandora gates would be incredibly difficult. Though its more likely they'd only manage it for the outer system rather than being able or wlling to directly challenge the Hypercorps. Though given the Hypercorps probably wouldnt share either, its basically the same result for 90% of humanity.

There's a difference between an unlikely but plausible scenario and the Jovians trying to warp reality with the intense power of nonsensical propaganda, as if their president is Space Donald Trump.

>>

I don't really find the situation plausible - though. Discord is basically theirs, and while angry Autonomists (with many Anarchists having a background in militant groups pre-fall) are masters of asymmetric Xiphos is also right there next to Fissure.

But Pandora and Mars are right on top of the epicenters of two practical superpowers in the Solar System, with top tier tech and forces and that chokepoint shit goes both ways. They're also in planetary systems with active TITAN Quarantine activity, and as far as we know the Ultimates don't really have "Fleet" assets - and the Consortium and Commonwealth would easily burn down their facilities and build them again if the Ultimates came close to holding them. This again, assumes they can get through the PC or TC sphere of influence which is several hundred km of space out from their planet in all directions and the hardened defensive positions in that local vicinity. The Gates themselves are nigh indestructible and self-repairing.

Vulcanoid is not as well protected, but has seen attacks and beefed up security and is funded by a lot of non PC hypercorps trying to keep up, so it's probably pretty well off and logistically is really goddamn far from any Ultimate base of operations. Lot of time and lag to move forces and supplies in enough force to warrant a strike and hold.

So, after you lost your friends, families, and bots on Earth you found yourself on Mercury, sifting soil and rock for metals. You worked in a mindless daze for years before you woke up to where you were and what you were doing. And you decided that this was not the job for you.
There weren't any bots for you to jam with on Mercury, the hyperelites didn't trust their indentures with that amount of tech. So you fell back on old, old habits. Making friends and poking open the divide of "us vs. them". You remembered and learnt how people spoke and acted, how people tried to hide what they knew and the common gambits people set up when they expected subterfuge.
It took years again but you eventually got to where you are now. You're trusted by the sifters and their overseers, and the gatemen of Cannon and those who live within it. You don't so much work as network now. You keep the workers happy by acquiring contraband for sort-of reasonable barter, you help the hyperelites keep unions and insurgencies small and manageable. I think Blind is "you know where he is, you just can't see shit" and hidden is "That motherfucker invisible"
>>
>>52431942
So an invisible target is harder to hit if you're also blind?
>>
>>52432013

Well, the max you can go is -60 overall, but possibly? Sadly, despite all the oodles of rules, most of the combat modifiers aren't elaborated on in the book. But yeah, if somebody has an invisibility cloak on, or is behind a wall so you have no idea where he is, and also you can't see shit anyway that might stack. GM has some flexibility, I guess.
>>
>>52431887
>You can't see, but are aware of a target
vs
>You don't know what you're even aiming for
makes sense to me.

>>52432013
How doesn't that make sense? If they were just invisible you might be able to pick up some telltales (leaving footprints, disturbing smoke, etc), but if you can't see any of that it's even harder.

The real hard part is telling what vision penalties apply when the shooter is a Gargoyle or similar walking sensor suite.
>>
>>52432670

Well, hidden can still apply - thanks to stealth tech, but yeah, if you've got Radar/Lidar out the wazoo or whatever then you're not blind - unless there's radar interference or a smoke cloud. This I think is why the game has more detail on sensor types and fields. Like, if you've got E Vision and an X-Ray emitter, depending on the structures not even "walls" will hide an enemy.
>>
>>52432670
>>You can't see, but are aware of a target
>vs
>>You don't know what you're even aiming for
>makes sense to me.

Okay, so if the "Hidden Target" modified applies to things that you not only can't see, but you don't even know where to point, does that mean I can hit any combatant I'm not aware of by pointing a gun in any given direction and rolling at -60?

>no anon, you have to know where to point the gun
But how can I know where to point the gun if I'm not even aware of the target?

>How doesn't that make sense? If they were just invisible you might be able to pick up some telltales (leaving footprints, disturbing smoke, etc), but if you can't see any of that it's even harder.
You just contradicted your earlier assertion of what a "hidden target" is.
>>

I'm not gonna bite into this argument with a rules retard. If you don't take the stupidest interpretation at every turn it works out.

Enjoy your nogames though, like everyone in this general.
>>
>>52432843

Blind means you can't see them, either because it's pitch dark, there's a cloud of opaque smoke or a lens crazer scratched your eyes out.

Hidden means the target is not directly able to be sensed. They may be completely invisible using cloaking, or they might just be behind an opaque surface. Theoretically, you know where they are or know they are present (such as if they shoot at you) but have no way to pinpoint them.

Logically, if you don't know there's a target, you can't declare an attack on them. If a guy is hiding in a cloak of invisibility taking indirect fire shots at you via wireless cams or something, you can guess and hope - and that's -60.
>>
>>52433032
>I'm not gonna bite into this argument with a rules retard. If you don't take the stupidest interpretation at every turn it works out.
And pray tell, what is a non-stupid interpretation of "You get this penalty if you try to attack a target you aren't aware of and can't see, but you need to know where they are in order to attack them"?
